Beneath its glossy finish and solid, hand-crafted cabinet, Mirage's top-of-the-line bookshelf speaker features advanced speaker technology capable of filling a room with rich, dynamic sound. Music and movies come alive with startling clarity, exceptional depth, and a natural warmth.

Innovative technology for exceptionally open, lifelike sound
The key to this speaker's expansive, true-to-life sound is Mirage's exclusive Omnipolar® technology. Thanks to the saucer-shaped Omniguide mounted above its top drivers (see "Photos" tab above), the OMD-5 can disperse sound evenly in a 360° pattern. The result: a deeper, wider, taller soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot." Mirage's approach delivers a combination of direct and reflected sound that's more like what we hear in real life. And you won't have to anchor yourself to one primary seat — you'll experience natural audio throughout the room.

Flexible placement and system-building options
The OMD-5's compact size and 360° sound pattern let you place it almost anywhere. Set it on a shelf or stand, or use the included hardware to mount it on a wall. Use a pair of these speakers for a neat and compact stereo system, or team multiple OMD-5s with a powered sub and Mirage's OMD-C1 center channel speaker for enveloping, high-impact surround sound.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Great sound !

As soon as I turned them on, I was amazed by the crisp open sound. They really do spread the sound all around the room. I suspect they might do better with a subwoofer even in a 2 channel setup like mine. What bass there is sounds tight and true.

Pros: big open sound and very clear soundstage presentation

Cons: a little thin on deep bass

Typical Mirage quality sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had Mirage OM-8s as fronts with powered subs, with OM C-2 center and omnisat rears. Boston Acoustic sub in addition. New house required smaller fronts and I opted for OMD-5s on pedestals. Went from OM-8s $2299/or (bought for $1299/pr) to OMD-5s 599/pr (pd $499). I am pleased with the sound, vocals in music are clean and honest and the sub complements these speakers well. Crossing around 80hz. I'm sure OMD-15s (gave it consideration) could have been nicer for music, but difference in price would not justify it in my mind. By the way, room size is 180 sq feet, vaulted ceiling.

Pros: Clean, honest reproduction. Spacious presentation. Well built and handsome.

Cons: Needs a sub for all but talking heads.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one of these on closeout and another from scratch and dent, but you would never know that they were. Shipping was reasonably quick and the speakers came well-packed. I have these set up as my mains in my bedroom mounted on a wall - I have a toddler and replaced some bookshelf speakers I had on stands prior to this. To say I am very pleased with the sound from these speakers would be an understatement. It's true from what is said out there about the sound put out by these types of speakers, being somewhat different than conventional direct radiators. They sound great! Very smooth treble and the bass is there as well, given the small size of this speaker. Very nicely made - heavy with a nice, smooth veneer finish. Think Nanosat Prestige but only supersized.

I've compared these with a set of Mirage Omnisat V2 that a relative owns, and I truly feel that these OMD-5's are better in all aspects - smoother treble, more extended bass. Given that I got these at a great discount (actually less than what a pair of V2's would cost) I almost feel like I stole 'em! Don't think of putting these in a large room, however. For that, you might want to look at the next model up in this range, the OMD-15. I wish Mirage didn't discontinue this line and hope they have an update coming soon. I'm hooked!

Great for Surround Speakers

Written by: Fletcher from Goleta, CA on January 16, 2008

I originally purchased these as front speakers for a new HT system. They were replacing a set of tower speakers, and I was initially disappointed. I subsequently purchased two OMD-15 speakers, with the thought of returning the OMD-5, then thought "I wonder how these would sound as surround speakers". I took out my old surround speakers and after equalizing the new set of speakers, I was amazed at the difference in the sound. I think these are a great complement to the OMD-15 speakers and the OMD-C1

Product Research

Overview: The Mirage OMD-5 is a bookshelf/satellite speaker that uses sophisticated driver technology and Mirage's exclusive OMNIPOLAR technology to make the small bookshelf speaker ideal for virtually any sound application. The speaker is available in a Gloss Rosewood and Gloss Black finish.

Note: The speaker is sold individually; not as a pair.

OMNIPOLAR Technology: This technology radiates sound in a perfectly spherical dispersion pattern, expanding the sweet spot to encompass virtually the entire room.

OMNIGUIDE Design: The design consists of a conically shaped cylinder that is responsible for reflecting sound in a perfect 360 degree pattern. This unique design guarantees the same tonal balance and dispersion characteristics no matter how and where you mount the speakers.

  • The speaker should be inverted with grille facing downwards when it is mounted above 6 feet.
  • The speaker should be mounted normally with the grill facing up when it is mounted below 6 feet.

Applications: The OMD-5 is a very versatile speaker since it can be used as a front, center channel or surround speaker. You can use these satellites to create a complete home theater speaker system or a dedicated 2-channel stereo setup.

Voice Matching: This speaker can be matched up with Mirage's OMD-C1 or OMD-C2 center channel, Mirage's OMD-28 or OMD-15 floor standing speakers, and Mirage's OMD-R rear surround speakers to create a home theater speaker system.

Note: The Mirage OMND-S10 subwoofer for Home theater or 2-channel applications when using the OMD-5 speaker is recommended.

Video Shielded: The speaker is magnetically shielded so you can even place on or next to your television without distortion.

Drivers: The drivers used in the OMD-5 are as follows:

  • Woofer: The speaker features a 5.5" polypropylene titanium deposit hybrid woofer with a ribbed elliptical rubber surround mounted at the top of the sealed cabinet.
  • Tweeter: Floating above the woofer is a precisely angled cast aluminum OMNIGUIDE module that houses the speaker's proprietary 1" PTH tweeter.

Enclosure: The cabinet is made of very solid inert medium density fiberboard (MDF) which creates a solid, flex-free cabinet which eliminates music altering distortion. The enclosure is curved and completely sealed.

Mounting Options: The speaker can be wall mounted using the supplied plastic wall bracket. The wall bracket is attached to the speaker using the supplied 9mm bolt. The screws needed to hang the bracket from the wall are not provided. The speakers also have a flat base so they can be placed on stands or a shelf. The footprint of the speaker measures 6.5625" wide x 7.4375" deep.

Speaker Terminals: The OMD-5 uses high quality gold-plated binding posts located on the rear of the speaker. The terminals will accept a wide range of connector type including spade lugs, banana plugs or pin type connectors.
