Our take on the Channel Master 4228

Channel Master's 4228 antenna can receive digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF band only (over 90% of digital TV signals are in the UHF band). The 4228 is optimized for "deep-fringe" reception of HDTV — it's one of the highest-gain antennas available.

This antenna features a highly directional design that will provide best results when most or all of the desired stations are transmitting from the same location. For clearer reception, pair the 4228 with the 7777 preamplifier — several Crutchfield employees are receiving digital stations from 50+ miles away with this setup. Also, if you'd like to pull in signals from different areas, consider a rotor to aim your antenna in the right direction.

The 4228 is classified as a Large Directional antenna. Its space-efficient design is suitable for roof and attic installations (mast recommended). For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on Choosing & Installing an HDTV Antenna. The article also includes a brief hands-on review of the 4228.

Features

Overview: The Channel Master 4228 antenna is designed for UHF frequencies only, both digital and analog. It can be mounted on a roof, on a wall, to a chimney, or in an attic.

Nest Brackets: The nest brackets and U-bolts are used to mount the antenna to a mast. The outer diameter of the mast should be approximately 1-1/4 inches.

Turning Radius: If using a rotor on the antenna mast, make sure a 20" turning radius around the antenna is clear of obstruction.

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set. Note: No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Connections: The included transformer is connected to the antenna tap-off points using the included wing nuts. The other end of the transformer has a female F-type connector. The included waterproof rubber weather boot should be installed over the cable connection to guard against corrosion. Note: Coax cable is not provided, RG-6 is recommended.

Operating Range: The rated range of the 4228 is 60 miles, but the distance is approximate, actual performance depends on too many variables to predict accurately

Gain: The average gain across the UHF frequency range is 12dB.

Simple! Perfect! the BEST!

Written By PRO1, Baltimore, MD on Monday, October 06, 2008

This is the second "HD" antenna I have installed. First, a "dish style" works OK, but has trouble maintaining signal on windy and stormy days, so I decided to try this one, placed on the opposite end of our Rancher. Local stations are within 5-7 miles, but I can now also get Washington, D.C. and other stations (23 total) with a rotator. Shipping was FAST, installation EASY, and the signal stays strong so far, despite the weather.
I would HIGHLY recommend this unit to folks interested in acquiring OTA digital signals. I bought it based upon reviews, and my review confirms what others have already have said.

outstanding product!!!!!!!!!!

Written By art5409ben, New Mexico on Saturday, September 06, 2008

This antenna outperforms traditional uhf and vhf directional antennas. I bought a brand new yaggi style antenna a few days before buying this one and could only pick up three channels in digital (I am located around 75+ miles from the signal source) read the reviews here and decided to buy this channel master it works perfect now im picking up 23 channels all in hd and digital with and average signal of around 30 pretty good for being 75+miles only need around ten to watch a channel. antenna is only mounted ten feet from the roof top and here in NM its not a straight shot to the tv source.....Mountains and hills in between.. A+++ for this antenna

CM4228 Is A Great Antenna!

Written By Len, Dover, NJ on Friday, August 29, 2008

My mom in Dover NJ (30 miles west of NY City) was receiving 7 analog NY stations (2,4,5,7,9,11,13)quite well on her analog TV. I then hooked up a digital to analog box to her existing outdoor antenna and only recived 6 digital stations (25.1, 25.2, 63.1, 63.2, 63.3, 63.4, 63.5). I then replaced her antenna with a CM4228 antenna and CM7777 amplifier from
Crutchfield. The results are astounding. She now gets 40 stations! All of the local major NY stations plus! All with a great picture and sound!

DickieBlue

Written By Don, Owingsville, Ky on Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Purchased new Sharp HD tv., at same time, purchased a channel master 4228 with amplifier.

I purchased this for my son and it is absolutely stunning the HD quality received.
I personally have Direct TV W/HDTV package and the over the air HD picture received with antenna at my son's location was better than that I receive with my sat. dish and receiver.
Couldn't be happier with purchase.

Channel Master 4228

Written By Bob, Rochester, NY on Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Excellent antenna for DTV / HDTV. I replaced a standard 17 element UHF
antenna that only provided marginal reception. I now have perfect
reception on all local channels. No proof yet, but I expect this antenna will
hold up well to ice and wind.

WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED

Written By kleetus, Sugar Hill, GA on Sunday, April 20, 2008

I live amongst large
trees, cell towers,
rolling hills, and
about 35 miles from
the transmitters. I
mounted the 4228 in
my attic behind foil
HVAC ducts and it
still pulls signals
in the 90 range. It
also pulls analog
and VHF stations
just fine (with some
ghosting). This
worked WAY better
than I ever dreamed.
I could not believe
it. I also used the
amp with it, which
probably makes a
difference. Now I
can kick my charter
cable TV aside. This
antenna is paying me
back as I speak.

Highly Reccomended

Written By Micah, Dothan, AL on Tuesday, April 08, 2008

Great reception paired with the 7777 pre-amp. I was able to pull in digital channels from 70+ miles away with the antenna sitting on my attic floor.

Channel Master 4228

Written By Alain, Kennesaw, GA on Saturday, March 22, 2008

We live about 25 miles from most transmitter (UHF and VHF). With the 4228 antenna and the 7777 preamp the reception is amazing. I am able to watch all the channel available in my area. I am now going to buy the digital converter box and can't wait for the coupon to come in the mail. I install the antenna in the attic and used a RG 6 cable . I also ran a ground wire (insulated #12 copper wire) that is attach to the mast and then to a rod in the ground. I positioned the antenna according to antennaweb's instructions. Once everything install and the preamp plug in I was very please with the result.

Great Reception

Written By Luke, Brentwood TN on Sunday, February 24, 2008

After trying several other antennas for my new HD tv this one worked like a charm. One of the HD channels in Nashville is in the VHF range and even it came in well with this antenna. The compactness and shape has allowed me to install it outside against a 6' privacy fence - out of sight and less prone to winds etc.
