I installed the antenna first (which was surprisingly easy to install) and it worked pretty well all by itself - although a few times during a the USC-Nebraska game it went in and out a bit. I did a signal meter test on all the stations I could pick up. The best was 100% while the worst was 23%. Then I installed the amplifier and the the 23% signal became 74%! My primary market is Charlottesville (16 miles away) and all of the stations there com in beautifully. I am also getting CRYSTAL clear reception from all of the Richmond stations as well (60 miles away.)I am very pleased with the Channel Master 4228/7777 pre-amp combo. 17 out of 17 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. After sinking big bucks in a 50" HDTV and more bucks in an HD satellite system, I still did not have local channels in HD and what I did have from satellite looked terrible on the HDTV. The website showed that I should be able to receive several area HD stations, but all but one were 60 miles or more away. The stated range for this antenna is 60 miles maximum. I expected that this rating was under ideal conditions and line of sight, so I did not think I would receive anything at my location. It was only after a discussion with the station engineer at one of the area stations that I decided to try it. I bought from Crutchfield because of their liberal return policy, so I had nothing to lose in trying it. I ordered the antenna, the CM7777 pre-amp, and the 9521A rotor. I now get beautiful HD programming from Roanoke (60 miles), Lynchburg (45 miles), Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point, NC (all about 60 miles), PLUS Raleigh/Durham, NC (80 miles). Most signals are at 90-100% except Raleigh/Durham at 60-80%, which is still a perfectly clear picture. This was without the pre-amp, which I returned to Crutchfield. Before ordering from Crutchfield, I checked all local stores for antenna equipment. They looked at me like I had a third eye in the middle of my forehead. (Antenna? You mean like they used to put on the roof before they had cable?) I predict that the rooftop antenna will soon make a comeback. Hopefully, it may someday help reign in skyrocketing CATV and SATV costs. After all, cable got started because it supplied a clearer signal than a rooftop antenna. Nothing you can pay a monthly fee for can beat the quality of a good (free) OTA signal. 20 out of 20 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Anyways, I checked the reviews and did the whole "Find your best antenna based on Longitude/Latitude webpages". Actually, there wasn't an antenna listed for my location after going though all that. I keep a strong signal most the time except today when it got REALLY cloudy, but maintaining about a 60 signal strength (through Dish Network Tuner meter). I'll get an amplifier for days like today, but I'm REALLY happy with this. BTW, there are several mountain ranges between me and the Tx towers. Plus, I live in downtown Rogersville, surrounded by mountains and many hills. If I put this on the roof elevated, might do better, but I don't want an antenna on the roof.
