Channel Master's 4228HD antenna can receive digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF band and high VHF band (nearly all digital TV signals are in the UHF or high-VHF bands). The 4228HD is optimized for "deep-fringe" reception of HDTV — it's one of the highest-gain antennas available.

This antenna features a highly directional design that will provide best results when most or all of the desired stations are transmitting from the same location. For clearer reception, pair the 4228HD with the 7777 preamplifier — several Crutchfield employees are receiving digital stations from 50+ miles away with a similar setup. Also, if you'd like to pull in signals from different areas, consider a rotor to aim your antenna in the right direction.

The 4228HD is classified as a Large Directional antenna. Its space-efficient design is suitable for roof and attic installations (mast recommended). For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on choosing and installing an antenna for HDTV. The article also includes a brief hands-on review of the very similar model 4228 antenna.

  • 20-1/2" turning radius (if used with an antenna rotor)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in my attic, works great, picking up channels 60+ miles away. Even some of those that tvfool. Com said might take a roof mounted antenna! It felt great walking into the cable company and turning cable TV off. Now I have over 20 channels for free!

Pros: Well built, lite weight and pretty much completely assembled right out of the box

Cons: Non

not terribly impressed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the Channel Master, new RG6 cable, and a Channel Master preamp to replace a 20+year old yagi. Now i have less stations and don't you know WBRA is one that I cannot receive. I bought the new setup since WBRA was iffy on the old antenna. I even added about five feet of elevation. Not at all impressed.

Cons: Besides not working as I wished it seems to be sort of light weight construction.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Service was great. Arrived in a day. Easy to install. When I called in for help after connecting the cable, the person that answered was very pleasant and helped to get the stations downloaded immediately. Pulled in 71 digital stations. Bought HBO Now, Showtime and Netflex subscriptions and I have everything I watched when paying Direct V $120 a month. Now it's less than $40/month. Also, picked up a Tivo for $50 to tape and save shows. Happy with the move from paying for channels I never use or want.

Perfect HDTV antenna

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the antenna in my attic and used the CM 7777 preamp to increase the signal going into a five room splitter. It worked from the second I hooked it up and I never made any adjustments to the antenna position. I get 32 digital stations and will cut the cable this next weekend. I used the TiVo Roamio DVR and one TiVo Mini and we are set. Here comes the savings! Thank you Crutchfield!!

Pros: Light weight and simple to install.

Cons: None

Way better than expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live 71 miles from the broadcast antenna on the freedom tower in nyc. I'm also only 5 miles from the Pennsylvania line. Upon installation, my vizio picked up 49 channels. I have about a 10 foot mast and my antenna doesn't come close to clearing the treetops. After determining signal locations & strenghth, i mounted the antenna in a southwest facing position. I get all the NY Stations in great HD clarity, even though i'm at the outer limits of the stated range. I also have some bethlehem,PA stations. A couple channels are duplicates and some are foreign language, but there is a LOT of quality viewing content. I'm very happy with this product. I am confident that i will have no regrets disconnecting pay TV. I may even get the eagles games in addition to the NY teams.

Pros: Easy to install. Great range. Beautiful picture.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exactly as advertised. Able to pick up 21 channels from multiple directions from almost 50 miles away, with being stuck in a valley with mountains interfering the signal strength. Added the 7777 CM amp which increased the amount of channels to 52. Goodbye Cable!

Pros: Exactly as advertised. Able to place in attic. Rated for 75+ miles on the packaging.

Cons: none

A Square antenna works

Written By Cardin, Merrick, New York on Tuesday, May 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The antenna works well. Long Island is flat. Most stations are in the NYC area, which is about 30 miles as a crow flies. The antenna receives the major networks and PBS stations. There are a couple of other stations that it didn't receive. Repositioning or a preamp might bring them in.

Pros: This antenna is compact for its range of reception. It is very simple to setup and lift up to the chimney top. In my area the reception is very good with minimal manipulation. In comparison to other antenna types with similar capabilities the cost is reasonable.

Cons: Too square, it should be rounder I think, and a choice of colors would be nice. And does it have to be made of metal. It doesn't work well at all in the basement.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Joined the ranks of cord cutters and ditched the Dish. Installed this antenna to receive local channels and signed up for Huluplus. This antenna mounted on my roof picks up 16 channels perfect at all times and 2 channels with a transmitter 73 miles away perfect about 70 % of the time. I'm going to add another 4 foot section on my mast and I'm sure that will improve. That will be all the networks plus a few others for free, better quality than I've ever seen with the Dish. Very impressed!

Pros: Works terrific. Reasonably priced, free and fast shipping with Crutchfield Very light and easy to mount

Cons: none, but can't comment on longevity

Excellent and exact

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research for the right antenna for my cord cutting project I settled on this Channel Master 4228. The free shipping from Crutchfield was the deciding factor to order here, and once received this antenna performed excellently and was exactly what I expected. I pick up all my local channels from two different directions with no turning and no problem. Everything broadcast in HD is crystal clear on my HDTV. Don't cut the cord without doing all your homework, but when you make the decision to cut the cord I recommend Channel Master antennas and Crutchfield as the supplier. No reservations.

Pros: Fast shipping, great price, careful treatment

Cons: None

Antenna was easy to install. Came pretty much fully assembled, just needs to attach to a pole to mount it on my roof and it came with the brackets to attach to the pole. It's been very windy and I've had no trouble with reception. Picture comes in perfect and I can actually get NBC which was difficult for my old antenna. CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, PBS all come in clear.

This antenna works great. Had a smaller antenna which worked great when we lived in Knoxville. We live in Columbia now and we could not get the low power channels with the old antenna. I purchased this Channel Master antenna and we now get those channels. The only downside is it is made in China.

Pros: Works better than my previous antenna

Cons: Made in China

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After decided to eliminate cable & satellite TV and their ever-increasing costs, I did a fair amount of research. Based on what I learned, the Channel Master 4228-HD seemed like a good choice. It Was! We live 22 miles from the majority of the local broadcast towers in south Phoenix, I wanted to mount the antenna in the attic and needed one that would provide strong reception of both high-band VHF (7-13) and UHF (14-51) signals. The CM-4228-HD came fully assembled and was easy to install. For $10 I built a custom mounting mast structure from 1 1/4" Sched 40 PVC and used appropriate compass heading to aim the antenna during the install. While some websites/retailers recommend the use of a signal pre-amplifier, others caution against using one until the antenna is installed and reception checked (an over amplified signal distorts reception). This little gem works perfect without an amplifier or further adjustments. I receive all local high-band VHF and UHF channels in crystal clear HD. I found that various comments I read about picture quality being better with over-the-air broadcast signals were true. The images are much clearer and show much more detail than compressed cable and satellite signals. I definitely recommend this antenna.

Pros: Easy installation. Works exceptionally well and "as advertised". For the price, this is an excellent value.

Cons: None noted.

I installed the Channel Master 4438HD antenna with a Channel Master 7777 preamp to replace an old antenna and amp. It was a snap to install and does a excellent job of receiving the Abilene TV channels that I wanted. I am about 70 miles from the transmitter.

Pros: Easy installation. Excellent reception of the desired channels.

Cons: None.

Great Antenna!!!!

This is a great antenna We live in north central IN and get channels from South Bend,Ft Wayne,Indianapolis and Lafayette. We don't get ALL of the channels from these towns-we do get all from Ft Wayne which is our viewing area but not all from South Bend and Indy but we have plenty of stations to watch. We have it mounted on our garage, I highly recommend it.

Pros: Does a good job,it's a decent price

Cons: I can't think of any!

4228 is the way to go

Written By Subaru Lou, Madison, NJ on Sunday, January 11, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live about 30 miles from NYC where most major stations are in the same direction (103*). I have tried two other HDTV antennas before this one. One was a small omni directional and the other was a large directional figuring that a big antenna would bring me all of the major network channels. They didn't but the 4228 does. I teamed it up with a Wineguard preamp as well as an amplified splitter. The size and dimensions of the 4228 make it very easy to install. I have it on a mast mounted from the side of my house.

Pros: Compact, easy set up, great coverage, light weight, reception has surpassed stronger antennas I owned. Basically assembled out of the box.

Cons: Some aluminum seems light duty and hope it holds up.

Thumbs up!

I'll keep it simple... Crystal Clear TV... I'll say no more. Also I'm very satisfied with Crutchfields' tech support. Go no where else... Shop Crutchfield. This is not a paid advertisement.

Pros: It's alread assembled and received the clear signals from 180 degrees. The farthest station is 80 miles and it comes in like it was on the cable.

Cons: There are no Cons...

Works Great! -- Time to Cut the Cable!

Written By JohnM, Boston Metro-West, MA on Monday, November 10, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

And I quote: "GREAT NEWS! ... [My cable provider] is going 100% digital ... your television will require a digital set-top box." What they failed to mention is that EACH set-top box for EACH TV costs $6.99/month! Doesn't sound like great news to me! I used TV Fool to determine direction, installed the Channel Master 4228HD in MY ATTIC (with the Channel Master 7777 pre-amp) and am now pulling in over 50 Channels up to 50 miles away. Note that there are many overlapping networks and different languages (Spanish being the most prominent) but there are at least 20 channels with a broad variety to suite my needs. I used the pre-existing cable wiring in the house to split signals to multiple TVs. I did not need an amplified splitter. I guess this is "Great News!" after all. With this antenna, the pre-amp, Netflix and HULU Plus, I will be dropping my TV cable subscription and saving over $70/month! Thanks [cable provider] for giving me the incentive to cut the cable!

Pros: Great return on investment that will last a lifetime Simple installation (just takes time) High Definition actually comes in better because there is no compression/decompression of signal

Cons: It took about a day, from start to finish, to prep, install, wire and set-up TV channels Because of network/program overlap, you'll want to create a TV channel guide to identify your core set of channels

Cut the cord with this antenna

Written By Chucktowm, Charleston, SC on Sunday, September 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After trying several smaller, indoor antennas, I decided to give this one a try and opted to mount it on the roof. So far, so good. I live close to most of my area's TV antennas and receive crisp, sharp signals with very minimal interference despite weather or signals from the nearby airport and military base. If you are looking to step up your antenna and are thinking of cutting the cord, the Channel Master 4228HD will deliver.

Pros: Easy installation, light-weight

Works Great

Written By Nick L., Sacramento, CA on Thursday, August 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great. I am in the Sacramento suburb of Natomas. I installed the Channel Master 4228HD in the attic of my one story house on a mast made of PVC. I am close enough to the city to get every station I was hoping for when pointed in one direction. In fact I am close enough for the CM to work well no matter what direction it is facing. I did NOT install any booster, just the antenna itself. The picture quality is like most reviews say, perfect. Better than what I was getting from Dish Network. I am very happy, and the fact that the antenna is up and out of sight is great for me and my neighbors. The box was a little banged up, but the product was fine and the install went according to plan.

Pros: Large enough to get the job done, small enough to tuck away in the attic. Good quality picture.

Cons: None

Outstanding Reception

Written By Bill, Wallace, NC on Sunday, April 06, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased two of these and a combiner (from another source) and connected them to the Channel Master -7777 amplifier in my attic. I aimed them toward the two major clusters of broadcast towers (as provided by TV Fool) and receive all stations within 53 miles. The antenna height is about 25 feet. I tried the antenna with and without the amplifier. The reception is much better with the amplifier (never any weak reception during poor atmospheric conditions. These need to be mounted on a mast which was difficult to find. I used a one and a quarter inch diameter steel fence post.

Cons: It would be helpful if Crutchfield sold the combiner to connect two antennae to the single source to the television.

We had an indoor antenna from others that we had to constantly adjust and work with to get reception for 14 channels. The reception was ok but never good.

We installed this antenna in the attic and was amazed at the great reception. We get 36 channels very clearly all the time with no adjusting required during two weeks of use.

Pros: Comes assembled and installs easily.

Cons: None

Awesome hd tv antenna

Written By Happy with purchase,, Wilmette, Il on Saturday, December 28, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great reception in the attic. I have purchased 3-4 other antennas and placed them in the attic with increasing better reception but over time the reception becomes spotty. Sometimes poor reception was weather related, but not always.

Installed this antenna in the attic (not even in front of a window) and immediately I had 54-58 channels on all TV's in the house. It has been installed 2 weeks now and I remain very pleased. Even with a few inches of snow (on the ground and presumably on the roof) there was no loss of reception.

Pros: Easy to install and great reception.

Cons: none.

Easy to install, though I already had a mast. Hooked it up without a pre-amp and am getting 4 bars on the signal meter and am picking up channels from both east and west about 45+ miles on each side.. So far, so good! I would recommend this antenna.

Pros: Easy install, great signal without preamp.

Cons: None to report.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hooked this up in my garage with the signal amplifier. I can pickup about 42 channels, and could probably get more if it was mounted outside.

Pros: 42 channels of free HD programming

Cons: its a fairly large antenna, 1/3 of the channels were in espanol,

It's working fine!

Written By Steveo, King George VA on Friday, August 23, 2013

Right out of the box, hung it from the gutter over the deck, got about 75% of the expected channels, just using a cheap converter box and RG-59. Moved it up to the side of the chimney and got all of them (according to TV Fool, anyway), then ran it to the good TV. Beautiful pic, much better than cable! Some intermittent pixellation on a couple of channels, but it's doing well. I'm going to buy an amp and use RG-6 just to see what it will do, and for distribution to the rest of the house.

Pros: Set-up is easy. It seems sturdy enough, but it's not heavy, so it's easy to handle.

Cons: Nothing so far. Time will tell.

I tried this antenna out and could not receive even one station event though there are quite a few only 35 miles away. The add said it would work up to 75 miles. I think it should say 7.5 miles.

Pros: Absolutely none.

Cons: A nice looking piece of sculpture but is is not a deep fringe TV antenna.

Bought this antenna to upgrade the HD rabbit ears I was using. After mounting this in my attic and running the scan/auto program on my TV I detected 15 new channels! Channels that I got before with 50% signal are now coming in at 100%! Most of the channels I'm getting from Denver, CO are on top of Lookout Mt (about 20 mies away) with 100% signal strength.

Pros: Easy Setup - Can be used indoors (Attic or even basement depending on your location) - lightweight - Very little assembly required.

Cons: Can't say I know of one at this time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit skeptical about trying an HD antenna, but am glad that I did!

I mounted this unit inside my attic, and feared that doing so would effect signal strength. However, I get a ton of channels and based on my TV's signal meter every channel is 7 out of 10 in strength or higher. Actually, only one is a 7; the rest are 8s and 9s. I should note that I'm in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, about 20 miles away.

The picture quality is better than my HD cable was too.

Very happy with this product!

Cons: It's a bit big, but who cares since it will be mounted in an attic or outside.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna works great! Installed this in my attic, using older, existing cable to run through the house. It is split to three tvs, and gets all of the channels perfect with no amplifier. Now for the shipping. I received this very quickly. When I brought the box in the house the parts bag fell on the floor. There were multiple spots where the box was open, and the antenna was visible. One of the wingbolts was on the bottom of the box, and one was missing. It does work great though.

Excellent HD Over-the-Air Antenna

Written By Duane W., Bedford, NH on Sunday, January 13, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this antenna in a friend's attic in a Southern NH town with a good location facing South. Most of the stations were located in the Greater Boston Area within a few degrees of magnetic heading. The average distance of the stations was around 30 nautical miles so I aimed the antenna and fixed it in position. The reception signal meter on the TV indicated a minimum of 3 bars and maximum of 10 depending on the channel selected. The quality of the 1080 HD picture is actually better than local cable and/or satellite on all of the channels which totalled 33! I would highly recommend this antenna if you want an extraordinary over-the-air HD picture for short money. Also I found the information on the TV Fool website that is hyperlinked from the Cruthcfield site very helpful and easy to understand!

Pros: Easy to install. Excellent reception in an attic installation. Good Information from the Crutchfield and TV Fool Websites to determine the best antenna for the location. Fast delivery.

Cons: None.

Not performing as well as I had hoped

Written By SteveW, Fairfield, OH on Friday, December 21, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is probably a very fine antenna, and the problem may be more to do with where I am, where I have it placed and possibly my TV. I don't intend on using it much, so I'm not too concerned that it doesn't perform quite as I had hoped. What's interesting is I live 18 miles North of Cinti and 40 miles south of Dayton. I get the Dayton channels much better than Cinti. I've tried turning this thing ever direction, sideways, etc. I have it mounted in my attic and run a cable down two stories to the basement TV, directly into TV. This came with no manual for suggested mounting or any information. I'm a little disappointed with that. I'm technical enough to figure it out, but it would have helped to know how this is intended to be directed.

Pros: Easy set up.

Cons: No instructions. Box was in bad shape. Ripped and taped back together.

It works great for both HD/Regular TV and FM/HD radio

Written By Kayaker, York, PA on Saturday, December 15, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an amazing antenna. Despite the distance and difficult terrain, it pulls in TV stations in Baltimore, MD and Harrisburg, PA. PBS.Harrisburg is crystal clear! When fed into an HD, Hybrid Digital, radio, it is simply magical! The quality beats cable TV and internet radio - just unbelievable! Other than initial cost of the antenna, a "high end" signal booster, and a "high end" HD radio, there is no monthly bills to pay for and yet it gives you the quality of signal/programming that fee-based services (ie cable/dish TV and satellite radio) can not match. It even pulls in WCSP which is located in Washington DC crystal clear! Yes, it is one of the most pricey antenna but very worth the money. Thus based on performance, it is the best antenna that money can buy. In fact, what good is it a cheaper antenna that fails to pull in the station you need. and signal booster: PCT-MA-1015-1P this combo (antenna + booster) works for both HD/regular TV and FM/HD radio!

Pros: Quality TV and Radio signals of the antenna and excellent service of Crutchfield

Cons: A bit pricey but worth every penny - it saves you cable and satellite radio bills while giving you much higher quality of signals - and programming if you are into PBS and no commercial radio programmings.

The antenna works fine, now that I have all the parts. I live 30 miles from Chicago at a location rated blue/violet by With the antenna and a preamp installed in my attic I receive all the local broadcast stations. My only complaint is with Crutchfield's choice to ship this item without a heavyweight shipping box. Before placing my order I had noticed several reviews mentioning damage to the antenna during shipment, so when I placed my order (by phone) I expressed my concern about these reports of flimsy packaging, and was assured that this this wouldn't be a problem. Well, it was a problem. My antenna arrived in the manufacturer's lightweight display box without a shipping carton, and that box that was falling apart and open on two sides. Fortunately, the antenna itself wasn't damaged, but the assembly instructions and bags of small parts were all missing. Crutchfield did respond to my subsequent email and shipped a set of instructions and the missing mounting hardware, but why didn't they just do a better job of packing the original shipment?

Pros: antenna works as advertised. Easy setup.

Cons: high probability of damage or loss of small parts during shipping due to inadequate packaging by Crutchfield

The anntenna was easy to install and works great, but the box is not suitable for shipping. The first one was damaged by UPS and the replacement was bent when I took it out of the box but I straightend it the best I could. The box is not strong enough for shipping and that is something that Crutchfield should look at if they want to be a mail order company.

More channels then even said I would get!

I am a bit over 30 miles from the Atlanta stations and I am getting all the major networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and both PBS stations) and much more. I got over 50 channels, but about 8 are in Spanish and another 8 are religious channels that I do not watch. All in all I ended up with about 30 channels that I can watch. MeTV is pretty cool and the French24 channel is interesting too. There are oldies and a movie channel (Moxie). Cut the cable, you will not be sorry!

Getting real good results with this antenna in my attic. I'm about 30 miles south of Atlanta. I had an older directonal antenna up there, but this cm4228 get much better. The signal result on the televisions show much better reception. I did add the ampifier with four TV output. CM3414. BIG difference. I recommend both for a really good reception.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was extremely disappointed with the performace of this "long range" antenna. I read many good reviews, but the antenna did not pick up a single channel in the Atlanta market. I live 30 miles East of Atlanta, and I already pick up 90% of available channels with an amplified Terk indoor antenna. I guess my expectations were way too high for this device. I do not think it's a good investment unless a separate amplifier is purchased. However, there's still no guarantee it will work when paired with the antenna.

Pros: Easy set up out of the box.

Cons: Needs amplifier to pick up anything.

Local cable company not showing my favorite NFL team (Clev. Browns) so I decided to give this antenna a try. I am 60 miles east of Cleveland and I pointed it west and I am picking up local channels out of the Cleveland, Akron and Canton erea some as far away as 55 miles up to 50 channels most of the time. Now I can get my NFL game on every Sunday. I did pair it with the Channel Master 7777 amplifier. I would not buy one without the other they are awsome paired together. This is on of the best parts I did'nt even have to mount it on my roof, I tried it in the rafters in my garage first and it worked great so thats where it will stay.

I was please with the SERVICE I recieved from the salesperson.----The Antenna is working within my expectations.-------I do have some pixelation from one of the MAJOR stations from San Francisco. It's not 100% of the time--BUT- -still is annoying. I am not sure if it is caused by the LARGE tree in the neighours front yard--LOL--. If anyone has any suggestions-----let me know.---

I would highly recommend Cruthfield to my friends and anyone else interested in looking into OTA and any other questions dealing with this type of service.

I will be looking into a DVR from them in the near future.

Good product for living Louisa VA

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased this to get local stations from Richmond and Charlottesville VA.
Both are 35-45 miles away from where we live. It hooked up easy and is now
receiving lots of stations provided the antenna is pointed in the right direction,
(point the "bow ties" toward the station.) At first I used the existing RG6 cable from
my abandoned satellite dish but had mixed to frustrating performance so I
replaced the cable with new RG6 that has 4X shielding and things are much
stabler. I ordered an antenna amp to boost the signal to hopefully improve the
performance, don't think I would need this if we lived nearer to the city.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna comes ready to install right out of the box with the exception of four screws screwed into the antenna, and two U-Bolts (in a sealed bag) for the antenna mast. The box arrived a little beaten up and one screw was missing on the antenna. I replaced it with a 10-32 thumb screw from my local small hardware store.

The instructions were easy to follow, but even though the info on grounding the antenna was recommended, there was no info on how to do it. I had to search the web for instructions. I purchased a 6 ft. RG-6 Coaxial Cable and a Grounding Block, and then put some Dielectric Grease on all of the Coaxial Connections to ensure a corosion free connection, and then I sealed the connections with Liquid Electrical Tape to ensure a water-proof connection. Make sure you put a "drip- loop" in the cables so that rain water does'nt get into the connections.

This antenna works great with the help of antennaweb. I was able to get ALL of the stations in my area and then some!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the antenna and put it up over the year-end holiday. We live in the northwest part of the Dallas-
Fort Worth metroplex and are pulling down 40+ channels. We get all the major networks plus
numerous spanish, religious and family programming. We live in a two story home and the antenna
is inside the main attic above the second floor - so about 20 feet up in the air. We have aluminum
radiant barrier installed throughout the entire attic, attached to the roof rafters, so there was a
concern about interference. I was very happy to find no interference and channel strength is 80% to
100% across all channels.

I've read numerous people comment that local programming comes in clearer than cable and I
would say it's equal if not slightly better. During the last couple of NFL playoff games I have been
switching between OTA through the antenna vs. Verizon FIOS and find no major difference.

Overall very happy with my purchase. $100 antenna plus netflix is allowing us to kill the
$100+/month cable bill. Awesome.

No assembly required, just take it out of the box, tighten a couple of wing nuts, connect
the cable to it and the TV. Point it in the direction of the transmitter, it's that easy.
I set it up on the floor in the kitchen six feet from the TV and got forty one (41) HD
channels within a couple of minuets, signal strength around 85, can't fault it.
About a week later I finally put it up in the attic, got the same channels but now all with a
signal strength of 95 plus, yipee.

Tvfool gave me the direction to point the rotor (another channel master product) and I receive Free HD from Richmond and C'ville (both about 45 miles away,) throw in a media center pc and I have an HD DVR with no monthly television bills. Add a broadband connection and I pay for what TV I want, ala cart. (Hulu, Netflix, etc.) Ahhh, technology!!!! :-)

Antenna came pre-assembled, so installation is much easier than big horizontal antennas.

WARNING: Check the "real" transmit (not virtual) channel #s for your address online.
If any of them are lower than "7" this antenna is not suitable for your market.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield processing and delivery was very prompt, and the CM 4228HD is wonderful. The antenna performs better than expected, and was an easier install than the other attenas I've worked with in the past. The antenna runs through an amplifier previously utilized for the now terminated cable service, and receives station from over 60 miles away. You will want to go to antennaweb. or similar site to research the channels available in your area, to make sure you won't need to receive lower end vhf stations (2-6), as this antenna isn't designed for that.

Don't hesitate to purchase this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna works well, and really not very large compared to the old style v antennas.
I am using a Channel Master 777 preamp. I am 32 miles west of Albany, NY and I am
currently picking up 13 stations. It's a little flakey, but it's not the antenna. Some sound
drop outs or pixilation, but, nothings perfect. Of coarse that's on the two stations we watch
the most. Overall this is a great antenna. I read the reviews also, and for the most part they
are true. Just get it high enough in the air, aim it, ad you will be fine. Crutchfield service is
also the best, since I purchased it's little brother, the 4221HD first, and needed something
larger. Returns are never a problem. Thanks Crutchfield. That's why I have been buying
here for over 22 years.

Very Impressed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, on a clear night, I thought I was hallucinating with this antennae. I live in a high rise and I was receiving WEWS TV in Cleveland! Also, WKYC, again in Cleveland! I receive some 30 stations, all the Detroit channels are very crisp, I am receiving a UHF channel from London, Ontario (120 Miles) consistently. I have the antennae inside a building on the 7th floor overlooking the Detroit River. I am impressed with the antennae and I am sure if somehow I could have it on a rotor, I would be more impressed. I am not using the preamp, but I am considering purchasing it. I am very amazed by this antennae.

Do your research first

Written By John, Hudson Valley, NY on Friday, October 09, 2009

I had very limited success with this antenna. I can't say that it was a lousy antenna. If anything, it was poor research done on my part. The best advice that I can offer to anyone interested in this product, is to simply research the signals in your area. Now a popular website is antennaweb. That is not conclusive in my opinion. A better website might be tvfools. Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that UHF signals do not bend around mountains like VHF signals. It might be more difficult to receive the channels that you desire. I did not receive the channels that I desired and I'm about 50 miles away from New York City. With the 7777 Preamplifier, I still did not receive many channels. In fact, I did not receive any broadcast channels like Fox, or NBC. I still believe that this is a good antenna, and maybe one of the best on the market; but, it didn't do what I expected it to do.

Sitting in attic, using 7777 preamp. Facing Either N or S, can get ABC stations from both Springfield, MA and New Haven CT. Facing North, get PBS 57 from Springfield. South gets My59 from New Haven. Huge improvement over set-top power antenna.

I had to do considerable re shaping after UPS bent the heck out of the antenna in shipping. But it seems to work very well.

I received this antenna as replacement for the 3018 which did not perform well for me. (I think the 3018 description is incorrect). The 4228HD was an improvement. I already had the preamp for use with the 3018 so I can't comment on how this antenna works without the preamp. To me one big advantage is that this antenna is much smaller and lighter than other old style long range antennas. Crutchfield really took care of me on the exchange of the 3018 for the 4228HD!

CAUTION: for attic installations, measure the attic opening before ordering...this antenna doesn't collapse.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this antenna to replace a Channel Master 3018 that was I was using in my attic. The advantage of the 4228 is that I can mount it higher in the roof rafters because it does not need anywhere as much space as other antennas. I now receive all the digital channels available that I had with analog prior to the conversion date. With the 3018, I could only get two (count 'em, 2) stations
