About the Channel Master CM 5020 Masterpiece

With a moniker like "Masterpiece," Channel Master's CM 5020 antenna had better be pretty good — and it is. It's recommended for "deep-fringe" applications — its large size and numerous reception elements help it pull in signals from distant transmitters. It pulls in over-the-air TV signals in the UHF and VHF bands — probably more channels than you knew were available.

To get the most channels possible, try adding Channel Master's 7777 preamplifier. Also, if you'd like to pull in signals from two or more different locations, you may want to consider a rotor to aim your antenna in the right direction.

The CM 5020 is classified as a Large Directional antenna. For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on choosing the best HDTV antenna.

Features

Long-Range Outdoor Antenna: The Channel Master CM-5020 is a directional, line-of-sight outdoor antenna that receives high definition and digital signals from a single direction. This antenna has a reception range of up to 100 miles and is designed to withstand extreme outdoor conditions.

UHF/VHF/FM Signals: The CM-5020 long range antenna receives digital & analog UHF (channels 14-51) and VHF (channels 2-13) TV signals. It can also pick up FM frequencies from 88 to 108 MHz.

Heavy Duty Construction: The Channel Master CM-5020 long range antenna features a tough powder-coated finish, UV stabilized plastics, bifurcated rivets for strength, and 0.5" (12mm) aluminum elements.

Quality Finished Edges: The Channel Master CM-5020 offers a quality look and feel. All ends are crimped and machined which reduces risk of cuts and scratches.

Snap Out Reflectors: The CM-5020 long range antenna features snap out reflectors that fold out and click into place, so its quick and easy to assemble on site. There are no loose nuts, bolts, or reflectors.

High Performance F-Type PCB Balun: The CM-5020 employs a high performance F-type PCB balun that ensures quality connection with low through loss and high return loss. The F-type PCB balun face down to minimize water ingress. A rubber "F" boot is also provided for extra protection.

Turning Radius: The CM-5020 antenna has a 72" turning radius if used with an antenna rotor (sold separately).

Mounting Options: The CM-5020 long range antenna can be roof, attic, mast, eave, or chimney mounted using the included hardware (pole mast not included).

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set. No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Customer Q&A

4 questions already asked

Q
I plan to install this in my attic. Do I need to run a ground cable? If not, will this antenna be safe in lightning storms? Sorry - I am new at this. Thanks for the advice in advance.

A
If you want that type of protection it will require using an inline surge protection module that must be purchased separately for that. Then you will ground the module to prevent any down stream surges. Use in an attic should help with lightning but nothing is as good as a good protection unit near the TV.

Hi I'm interested in searching for roof top antenn'a, This one say 100 miles, so my question, I live in zip code 39661, is there anyway you can search zip code to check just how far i'll be able to reach out?????

Yes. I recommend a search of your address on the site, TVFool. This is a great resource to help you decide what type of antenna is best for your home. By the way, I couldn't be happier with my Channel Master CM5020. It pulled in even more channels then TVFool expected.

Q
i have 6inches of closed cell foam sprayed in my rafter bays. will i still be able to use this antenna in my attic?

Yes.

I am not sure if, or how much RF, the foam will block. Your main concern with an attic installation, provided no signal loss, will be having enough room to aim the antenna. Mine is outside on a pole with a rotor.

Q
What else do I need to purchase to install this in my attic? Does it come with the mounting pole for example or is that separate?

Hi Chad, you will have to buy a pole separate to mount it. All you will receive will be the antenna. Depending on the distance from the towers, you will want to consider a signal booster as well. Good luck!!

Even though an antenna mast is shown with the CM 5020, none is supplied. I used the Channel Master 1805 mast to mount the Channel Master 5020 in my attic. I used "U" bolts from a local hardware store to mount the mast to the ceiling joints. It works well.

BTW, I live about 70 miles from most stations, but was even able to get one from close to 90.

Chad, the antenna comes ready to bolt onto something. I had an old aluminum pole that I saved from a patio furniture umbrella. The antenna will accommodate a small range of sizes, so my "repurposed" alum pole worked great. Of course then you will have to attach that pole to something to hold the antenna. I also purchased an amplifier from Crutchfield to use the antenna. It did not work without it, but I am completely satisfied with my purchases.NOW it works great. ( I think this is starting to sound like a paid ad) I want commission from them! Jim

We did not get a pole. The U bolts, nuts & washers are included so you could probably attach it directly to a vertical 2"x 4" brace that's in your attic. You might have to drill some holes in the 2"x 4" to accommodate the U bolts or buy a 2"x 2" x 8' and cut to the length you need and secure it to that.
