Extend your home network without running wire

Today's "smart" TVs, Blu-ray players, and game consoles let you access content from the Internet, but some of them don't come with built-in Wi-Fi®. And depending on your setup, running an Ethernet cable may not be convenient. Channel Master's CM6104 is a great solution — it uses your home's existing electrical wiring to pass Ethernet signals to up to four devices in a single room.

This powerline-to-Ethernet kit comes with a single-port powerline-to-Ethernet adapter that plugs into a wall outlet near your modem or router, and a 4-port switch that lets you feed Ethernet signals to your TV, Blu-ray player, gaming system, or computer. The two parts of the system immediately identify and connect with each other, and your wired home network is automatically extended to another room of your home.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only wish I had knew about this gadget before I spent too much money on the two TIVO Wireless Adapters. I had purchased for two TIVOs I have. The reception is far better than over a wireless set-up. I have a Marantz SR7007, TIVO, OPPO and a Roku set up on the Channel Master. I wonder if they make one with more Ethernet ports...mine only has 4. Right now, this product fits my equipment needs. Thanks to Crutchfield (can't remember the guy's name) for an excellent suggestion!

Pros: Great reception, easy set up, out of the way you plug to your electric outlet near the equipment, the instructions are very clear. Saved me money. The newest AVR Marantz (with built in wifi) is several thousands of dollars compared to the Channel Master which does the same thing for my SR7007 Marantz.

Cons: Only has 4 ports. But, not a problem for me. Maybe for other users with lots of equipment that they want to hook up for wifi.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once correctly installed the device works exactly as advertised. The 'Quick Start Guide" gives easy instructions for installation and points out that some environments will give better performance than others. I ran into a technical problem with the installation and called Crutchfield for support. They determined the nature of the problem and referred me to the User Manual on the Channel Master site. That solved the problem.

Pros: Works exactly as advertised.

Cons: Installation may require additional documentation.

Essential for connected TVs

Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 2/19/2013 1:40:00 PM

I actually bought this to go with my connected Blu-ray player. The player has a built-in Wi-Fi® radio, like most newer TVs, but I experienced a lot of stuttering when playing streaming files online. The reason: my Wi-Fi router was too far away to provide a fast enough connection to keep up with streaming video.

But the CM6104 changed all that. It uses my home's electrical wiring to carry a super-fast Internet signal to my Blu-ray player. Now I can stream Netflix®, watch stuff on Google TV™, and even browse the Web with ease. I have tried an online speed test and the connection to my Blu-ray player/TV is now faster than my MacBook®. I cannot recommend this adapter enough to anyone looking to connect a TV to their home network.

these cords could help. i will redo my wifi system to get around the need for the product. at a cost less than the product. [ STEVE V  Jan 24, 2014 ]
The instructions from Channel Master suggest that plugging the unit directly into an outlet is the best method. It also states that you can get "OK" performance if you plug into a noise filtering device. So I think it would be "OK" using a line conditioner. It seems the device's enemy is any AC adapters connected on the same line. Mine is plugged directly into the wall outlet and spaced several rooms apart. It has worked without a single issue. Well worth the money. I suggest you buy it and if it doesn't work return it to Crutchfield. They are great about accommodating returns. [ JACK  Jan 22, 2014 ]
Hi David, It was recommended to me not to plug it into surge or conditioners and I didn't and it works great. You won't be disappointed. Good luck Mark [ MARK  Jan 22, 2014 ]
i never used the channel master. after ordering, and doing further research, i determined it would not fit my application. item was returned unopened. [ JAMES R  Jan 22, 2014 ]
I have this but it's plugged into the wall outlet. I have not used this plugged into a power surge protection device [ STEVEN H  Jan 22, 2014 ]
From the Channel Master manual: Avoid connecting this device to an un-interruptible power supply (UPS) or backup power supply device. For best results, we recommend connecting the adaptors directly to a wall outlet. Avoid connecting high power-consumption appliances to the same wall outlet. Plug these power consuming devices into a noise filtering power strip to prevent these devices from interfering with this Powerline device. [ JEFF  Jan 22, 2014 ]
