The CM7000-PAL is a great concept. I don't want to be tied to a monthly service fee like cable or TiVo. I was stoked to see that I could record two live shows while watching a recording, that's cool.

The bad news is that I'm currently holding my third CM7000-PAL in four months. The first arrived DOA out of the box. Channel Master replaced it happily, but that one died in 78 days. I tried to return it for $$$, but their return policy had expired. Channel Master again replaced my device with a new one that had NO sound! So in 120+ days I've had a working DVR for 78 days--thats a 65% uptime rate. What if your car or your cell phone only worked half the time?

At this point I'm not sure what I paid for and my one year manufactures warrantee is steadily dwindling away. All I wanted was to record live TV to watch at my convenience, but instead I got a hobby corresponding with tech-support. At this point I'd rather make my hobby building my own MythTV DVR.

Pros: Great concept; easy to install and use; free of monthly service fees; records two live shows while watching a recording--that's cool.

Cons: Product reliability and company customer service are poor, very poor.

The first unit I received was unable to keep the correct time and would lose as much as 9 minutes a day. There are some trouble-shooting fixes for that problem, but they didn't work. Crutchfield sent a replacement unit within one day and sent a pre-paid return authorization. The second unit keeps time and works as-advertised. Thank you.

Just about perfect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: - Good Quality recording in HD and SD (depending on the way the program is aired) - Easy to use, intuitive menus - Excellent remote control (will also control basic functions on your TV) - Excellent TV guide downloaded over air (1 week TV schedule download) - Easy to program (includes one time event, weekly, Mon-Fri and Daily options) - Very responsive, with only ms delay between button press and DVR reaction - 30s forward skip and 10s backwards skip functions - dual tuner can record 2 shows simultaneously, while watching an already recorded show (one RF input cable is internally routed to the 2 tuners) - RF and HDMI (with sound) outputs.

Cons: - Cannot select to record HD program in SD (to save HDD space). - User Interface could be better ( a but annoyed with the way recorded programs are displayed, using only 1 quarter of the screen available; would have preferred a table format) - LAN port / USB used only for updating software; cannot connect an external USB drive, or stream through the network

Bottom Line: Solid, responsive, good quality DVR. Excellent internal tuners may actually improve picture quality (over TV tuner). All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend this to a friend. Can't wait for the WiFi coming out later this year. (Hopefully with network streaming capability and USB connectivity.)

There are no HD local channels here on DirecTV and, since we must have Speed Channel and local channels, we bought the CM 7000 and a $15.99 rabbit ears antenna.

When the local channels broadcast in HD the picture on the CM is perfect, absolutely perfect.

The customer service and packaging from Crutchfield was also absolutely perfect.

I am delighted!!

Good upgrade for HD-ready TVs

Written By Tom S, Boise, ID on Sunday, September 25, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 50" Sony LCD TV that does not have a off-air Digital Tuner built-in, so the Channel Master CM-7000PAL was a good way to add that functionality along with DVR functionality. I dropped my satellite subscription and have gone with OTA only. It is nice to not have to have any monthly fees like a Tivo box would have.

The DVR functionality is good, although the user interface is a little bit dated when compared to the functionality and user interface of my former DirecTV DVR. For example, when opening the Guide, the channel I am watching is no longer shown in a smaller window box like it is on several other menues. However, you can still browse the guide in overlay windows of the full screen using the right arrow key on the remote, which I prefer over the guide button anyway. I am hoping that a software update in the future will upgrade the user interface.

My only complaint is that the remote can handle most devices, including my Receiver, but cannot be programmed for my Sony Blu Ray player, which apparently requires 5-digit remote codes. The CM-7000PAL remote can only handle 3-digit remote codes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CM-7000pal does what it says it will do. I can record off the Air-TV, the picture quality is average not the greatest. It is easy to set up but lacks some features found in Satellite DVR's. If you are looking for a DVR that can do recording off the Air this is about your only option in a stand alone unit.

I tried the MDR515H and it is prone to problems and is harder to program, it stopped working and would not turn on, failed with in 30 days so I returned it.

I have had the CM-7000pal for about 3 weeks and it is easy to program to record your favorite programs of the air. The cost was about $70 more then the MDR515H but is still pricey. But I am saving over $85 a month over satellite prices so the high price for this unit in my mind is justified.

I only wish some of the top players Sony, Samsung,Toshiba, Pioneer, LG had some current off-air DVR products but they don't. For now the CM-7000pal is about the only decent off-air DVR out there.

So I say go for it if you have done your due diligence and can afford the $ price.

Best Regards,

Fee Free DVR for Broadcast channels

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great option if you are looking to cut the cord with cable and can't stand sitting through commercials or paying for a channel guide. I hooked this up to a small inexpensive HD antenna on my roof and get dozens of over the air channels uncompressed. Live broadcasts (HD content) look phenomenal. It has the same remote and similar menu structure to Dish Network's DVR, although with some of the features missing - it will not show picture when scrolling through the channel guide. Another quirk is the remote range/sensor: sometimes I have to stand right in front of the sensor for it to register (there are no buttons on the front to control without the remote). It would be nice if it had a larger size drive or expandability, but with over the air I will be recording less junk programming than I did with dish so it may not be an issue.

Not one to go crazy with praising a product, but this PVR really did the trick...

After ditching Dish because I got tired of paying for more commercials than regular OTA TV, my family decided to give up Pay TV for OTA, and Netflix. It was tough without our Dish DVR. Netflix On Demand is great, but we kept running into Documentaries, and Public Broadcast Programming we wanted to watch, but schedules would conflict. Bring On the CM-7000PAL! Problem Solved, and my Wife and I could not be happier to be rid of the insanely excessive commercials cable, and dish expect their customers to pay for. Now we can search for content, and record, pause, playback Live TV, and if there is 10 minutes an hour of commercials we can just skip thru them, the key is ...

Thank You Channel Master for keeping this product around!!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fist digital tuner out of over 20 that have lasted more than a month. Went over a year with no TV, only a DVD library. A big fat high 5 to the fed for that one; 1st forcing the industry into digital broadcasting before they were ready to do so, then lying to us by telling that ALL TV channels had to go digital by a certain date. Multiple complaints to representatives went ignored. By law they are supposed to reply but don't and until we demand differently, get used to it. Well high 5 to Channel Master for being the first to supply a solution and they did it in flying colors with this DVR. It's not perfect. Read the other reviews, they point out some of it's shortfalls. TV guide here in New Mexico rarely ever posts programming past 6+ hours. If you fill the hard drive (it's too small), it will erase saved programming without warning you when you set it to tape something. It will not hold settings you tell it to keep; you have to constantly keep resetting them every time you do anything but just watch it. These flaws could be fixed in software but from what I hear about Channel Master's level of customer care, it won't get fixed any time soon. It's the only digital tuner for older TV's. Thanks to the government, Channel Master has a monopoly on the digital tuner market right now for older TV's, so as we go from a world leader to the new third world dump, enjoy what is out there because it won't get any better than this.

Just Hooked It Up!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This just came in (thanks for the quick delivery Crutchfield). I had it hooked up in moments and was watching the TV. I just cut the cord on Dishnetwork and went pure OTA, except for some Netflix streaming.

It's still early, but my out of box experience has been really good so far. I'm inpressed. I have setup some recording from the TV grid. The remote and software seems to be very close to my Dishnetwork DVRs and that's a good thing because everyone here knows the remote well. The only odd thing I've seen so far is when connecting audio outs to a receiver from the Channel Master, the sound from the receiver is slightly delayed from the HDMI sound coming from the TV. I have not tried an update to see if this issues is fixed yet. I will post more as I give this little box a work out. So far so good tho. :)

Great Product for Antenna TV

Written By Joel S, Portland, OR on Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the PAL 7000 to do two different tasks. I needed a new HD Tuner, and I wanted an HD DVR to replace my older Tivo which I used with a Converter box. I had dropped cable service when HD TV came in (and the price went up substantially) so I wanted a unit that was optimized for antenna reception.

The PAL 7000 works great for both purposes. Since it has two tuners, it can either record two programs or watch live TV while still recording one different program.

The program search features work very well. They are not quite as quick and easy as Tivo but they don't cost $500 either. The onscreen TV guide is very handy and allows selecting programs directly to either watch or record.

The built in tuner is at least as sensitive as my (now dead) Samsung DTBH260F HDTV was.

I primarily use a Logitech remote to control all the system devices, although the Channel Master remote is a little better for some of the DVR functions. I haven't gotten it to control the surround sound or Tivo, so I mostly use the Logitech.

I like the signal strength display when I change channels, and I especially appreciate the DVR display which shows how much recording space is available. That was always an issue with the Tivo.

I purchased this product to replace Dish Network's DTVPal DVR which is no longer sold or supported. The CM-7000PAL is the same DVR with updated software; several programing glitches have been fixed. If you are using an indoor antenna, I recommend the Terk HDTVa amplified antenna (available from Crutchfield). It outperforms others I have tried and I rarely have signal dropouts on TV stations within a 45 mile radius.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a Directv user for 16 years. The cost kept going up and up. Put up a Channel Master 3020 antenna and cut the Directv service. I had to set up 2 TV's a 50" Sony projection and a Sony 34" CRT. I am in central Virginia and pick up 15 channels from Richmond. If I had a rotor I could pick up 33 channels off of the antenna. I installed a Channel Master 7000 PAL antenna HD-DVR on each TV for recording off of the antenna. The CM 7000 PALs have worked great and the guide is a great feature. I installed a Roku also on each TV. The Roku gives me many, many things to watch from my DSL. I am very happy and neither my wife or I have missed Directv or the monthly bill for it. I stream Netflix for $7.99 a month.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a perfect solution for those that have decent antenna reception. I've been paying cable and Dish for years and find I pretty much only watch the main network channels 90% of the time. I did get addicted to cable DVR so I had to find a way to record OTA TV. THIS IS IT! This unit will pay for itself in just 3 months of not paying cable and the picture is better than the compressed cable picture. I get 28 channels of TV and most of those are HD. This unit works flawlessly and as others have said is similar to Dish remote and Guide. Uses TV Guide program listings with the ability to tailor the guide to the channels you are interested in. You can actually record two programs while watching a third channel using your TV tuner. I highly recommend this unit......and Crutchfield!

Channel Master CM-7000PAL

Written By mtucker, Escondido, CA. on Thursday, June 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We were getting rid of our satellite service since most of the programs we watch are off the main networks. I wanted a dual tuner ATSC capable DVR that could record in hi-definition. The picture quality looks great on my 7ft.+ screen. The TV Guide service (TVGOS) that the CM-7000PAL uses is available in my area (north San Diego). I estimate 75% of the programs have information for them in the guide. I can search for programs by name and just tell it to record it without messing with manual channel #s and times. For the programs that aren't listed in the guide, I have to look up the channel and time and then put them in. Either method lets you choose how often to record (once, weekly, M-F). If you are browsing the guide, you can use the skip forward or back buttons to move a day forward and back so you don't have to go 1 hour at a time.

The GUI makes sense and I like that the antenna signal strength is part of the info displayed at the top of the screen along with program name and channel #. The forward and back skip (for commercial skipping) work great as well as the fast and reverse search.

At first I was concerned when I saw no lights on the DVR the day after I installed it, but later I found that this is just a standby mode that it goes into. It still records all scheduled programs. I always use my learning remote, but the included remote seems laid out well. Overall it is a great DVR and will pay for itself after a few months of no satellite fees.

I bought this after a friend recommended it. I am really happy with it, but I'm on my second one. The first one stpped working after less than 2 weeks. I had it in a pretty well-ventilated cabinet, but I put the new one on top of the cabinet because of fears that the high amount of heat that the unit kicks out may have killed the first one. Crutchfield was great on the return - had a new unit to me in two days.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works well, just as described. But if you are used to Tivo or ReplayTV or other DVRs, you just don't have the functionality of those. No real complaints other then when you pause it and start the TV program again, there is a few seconds before the sound kicks in. I doubt that is a problem with my unit, but more of a design problem. But it has an excellent HD picture that equals what I get off the antenna direct or when I was using Dish Network. The nice thing is it costs me nothing on a monthly basis. As I told the Dish Network people when I cancelled that service, "you can't beat free".

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We're very pleased with our decision to purchase Channel Master CM-7000PAL from Crutchfield! - The price was the most competitive I found, - It arrived in just a few days, - was well packaged for shipping across the country - and it arrived undamaged and worked straight out of the box!

There is not much more I could ask from.

The product itself was easy to install and fairly straight forward to use. I like the ease of programming and play back is simple. Another NICE feature is that you can "pause" live TV if you need to step away for a moment and then catch-up when the commercials come on. The only minor issue was that my TV manufacturer was not listed in the list of codes so that I could operate my DVR and TV from the same remote with a single controller. One quick call to Channel Master Customer support and they provided me with a proceedure on how to pair my DVR remote with my TV ...... and the best part was it actually worked! The first time!!!! I was so surprised I did it a second time. All in all I have no issues recommending this product or Crutchfield to anyone.

So good for this machine. Easy to learn the system and the product is user friendly. I do think that there are some things that could be more convenient, such as the search options for planning future shows (new episodes, etc), but it is much better than what I had before. Also, I've noticed that some of my Guide options are limited, but I think that is a result of the information coming over the airwaves - not a problem with the machine. I would definitely recommend this product to someone wanting a DVR option for OTA television.

Googled for DVR and found the ChannelMaster. Crutchfield was easy to order, shipped immediately and arrived when promised yesterday. No hassele, all shopping websites should be this easy!!

Simple to set up and get going with built-in setup wizard. Owners manual could be better written with more detail. I just played with buttons to see what effects it had on program or DVR functions. Discovered I could record a program AND watch another channel simultaneously. While a dumb infomercial ran, the DVR allowed me to "rewind" on live channel a few minutes previous so I could see the start of program I missed, then resume right back to where the live program was (impressive)!! Already recorded a movie and a program while I slept, so can watch today.

Nice, but needs Improvements!

Written By Mark, Kansas on Sunday, May 22, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am pleased in general with this antenna DVR, but it could use a few improvements to compete with DVR units from satellite services. I have been using satellite service for about 12 years, and DVR recording for at least 6 years. So I know what to expect from a DVR. The picture quality is excellent as is the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound! I have difficulty with the so-called TV Guide service. Some of the major networks have filled the guide with titles, but others provide no information at all. So much for having the TV Guide built into the unit. So you must subscribe to a guide so you can program a week in advance! With satellite DVR, this was never a problem for up to 2 weeks in advance. It also tends to cut off the top and bottom of the broadcast picture totally blocking the "ticker" showing weather update information! This is important when you live in "tornado country" and need to maintain safety. I have missed several recordings that it dropped for some reason, so I make certain that they are on the list prior to leaving home for work in hopes of getting them recorded. I work rotating-shift work, so a DVR is an important part of my scheduling practice. It needs some improvements, so I give it 4 stars.

1. Recording HD programs really eats up the hard drive.
2. You can only record two channels at one time, or record one channel and
watch one channel. This can really cause a problem when you add a few

But there are limited options when recording over-the-air programming. I see

Very satisfied with this unit. Easy to setup and start. Short learning curve. Being able to record two programs at the same time a real benefit. Inclusion of TV Guide a major benefit also. I like the remote control. However, the search for the correct auxiliary device codes using the "scan" process is laborious and time consuming when the published code numbers don't work. I just hope the unit is rugged enough to last a reasonable amount of time. The continuously running hard drive does concern me, though it is quiet. I miss the ability to delete channels that I am not interested in, or that are on the borderline of signal strength. A minor point is that to access the sub-channels, one must enter "0" instead of "hyphen" as in most HDTV remotes. Standardization would be helpful.

This product is good. I was impressed with the ability to preview the shows I

Problem after problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit in order to receive and record live TV after cutting my ties with pay TV service. Initially, the unit seemed fine, but after a while we started missing scheduled recordings. Not only that, the unit would record other shows that we had not scheduled. The unit has always been connected to an active internet connection in order to receive the latest updates, so that was not the problem.

After about 4 months of ownership, the unit froze up completely and would not boot at all. After trying several troubleshooting methods and speaking with customer service, I sent the unit, at my shipping expense, to Channel Master for a warranty exchange. The exchange took almost a month from the time it was shipped to the time I received a new or refurbished unit. Customer service could not give me any timeline on unit turnaround.

Now, with the new device installed, I am getting random reboots. Sometimes, these occur as often as once every 10-15 minutes. I cringe at shipping this unit again, at my cost, and waiting another month for a replacement unit.

I consider myself very technical and have lots of experience with audio video devices. I am no stranger to proper setup and troubleshooting. Nevertheless, the CM-700PAL has given me more trouble than all other electronics that I own. I do not recommend.

This recorder replaces our Sony DVR that also captured over the air broadcast
TV. The system was easy to set up and receives the broadcase TV schedule
over the air waves very well. Recording was easy. The manual was not as
useful as just following the menus to set up regular recordings. The setup
was easy and the signal scale is very useful in getting good reception. We
receive a great variety of high quality signals on this unit.

this unit is just what we needed since we only have air tv. itworks fine most of the time .but is aggravating when it decides not to work right. some times it won't record the show that is programmed, then if it does and you anly watch part of the show and then stop , it will erase the rest of the show even if you hit the protect button it will erase but not as unit is only two tears old .for the money i would think it should have lasted longer. it still works but you just never know when it will act up

This antenna HD DVR is awesome! It works great. It was a breeze to set up too. I
have already watched numerous shows. I am so happy not having to pay a certain
satellite company every month! I would recommend this product to everyone.
Please give it a try. You won't be sorry!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems to be doing what I was wanting... to be able to record HDTV from my
antenna. I don't have nor want cable or satellite TV. So far all is well and I am
satisfied. When I saw other reviews before purchasing it dawned on me it
would have been nice to have a larger drive, and I would have liked some kind
of ability to permanently burn a HD recording off onto a disc if I wanted to, but
all in all it is fine as is. Also it would have been nice to be able to get this at
about half the current cost... it is what I consider kind of expensive for what
recording devices should cost these days. I expect the cost will come down in
time and maybe other manufacturers will start making this sort of device. But
for now this is the only one of its kind so it is what it is.

I highly recommend this machine!

First machine the remote control did not work. I called Crutchfield and was
pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get another machine. I didn't even
have to ask. She just appologized for the inconvenience and offered to ship
another machine, express, for free. I would deffinitely order from Crutchfield
My CM 7000 PAL was very easy to connect to my 7.1 surround system with an
HDMI cable and is easier to program than my old VCR! Now I can go to bed
and watch my late night shows the next afternoon after work and fast forward
through the commercials.
I would highly recommend this machine and Crutchfield!

Quite Amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Channel Master CM-7000 PAL is an amazing machine! I purchased this
unit for my sister in Chetek, Wisconsin. I have never owned cable or satilite t.v.
but have family members that do. The "live t.v." functions are amazing and the
ease of programing is easy to understand and perform. Setting up the unit,
and the set up program was a snap. The manual was a bit daunting though,
in that trying to figure out how all of the features worked, and utilizing them.
I hope this unit will be around when my dvr wears out so I can buy this one for
myself! My only complaint is the warrenty. Square Trade does'nt opperate in
Wisconsin. If this unit fails, my sister can call in for the prepaid return mailing
label, and mail it, but when it is returned, it will be returned back to me in
Bloomington, Mn. and I will have to mail it to her or deliver it myself! I found out
this info after I had already purchased this warrenty. I would most definately
recommend the Channel Master CM-7000 PAL!!!!

Except for a couple of channels, I knew I would not miss paying all that money to the cable company. I did, however, know that I would miss my DVR. I don't miss it now and I can highly recommend the Channel Master CM-7000PAL. I love the onscreen schedule as well as the ability to record my favorite shows ... all while watching another channel.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having the Dish Network version of this DVR for a couple of years now I wasn't afraid to buy the Channel Master 7000PAL. Both DVR's work extremely well as DVR's go,but they share the same behavior with weak signals(fail to record anything if signal is very weak and even delete daily or weekly repeat timers), Since it adds channels even when shut off, some times very distant channels show up in the guide as high numbers but can't be recieved (no signal). But for the up front cost and no monthly fees this DVR is well worth it. Also replaced 250Gb hard drive in older unit with 1Tb (now have 142 hours HD recording time. This DVR does take some learning to get full advantage out of using it,but remote is very easy to get used to.

Works like a charm

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Delivery was quick and the unit arrived in perfect condition.

Setup was intuitive, and should be very easy to anyone who has ever setup and
configured mid-level consumer A/V equipment or a computer. While waiting for
delivery I downloaded and reviewed the user manual, but it wasn't necessary.

I'm fortunate to live well inside the broadcast range of my local television
stations, and this unit works perfectly with unamplified UHF/VHF rabbit ears.
The tuners receive solid signals with strength readings in the low 80s to high
90s on all stations. The picture quality of recordings of both HD from the main
channels and SD from the sub-channels is crisp, sharp, and indistinguishable
from live OTA broadcasts.

The layout of the buttons of the remote control unit is a bit clumsy and I don't
like it. I was able to overcome this by programing the remote from my TV set to
control the CM-7000PAL. Also, the only cables provided were analog, and I had
to provide my own HDMI cable. I realize this a normal practice, but HDMI
technology is sufficiently mature that proper cables should be provided with the
unit. Not a deal breaker though.

I've only been using it for a couple of weeks now, but so far this thing just works!

Very good overall

Overall like I like the unit. Setup was easy, just followed the prompts. The
guide is is adequate, but not as information as my old dish guide. The pause
and jump ahead or back functions work well. A couple of times the unit
rebooted for no obvious reason. Most annoying is when you tried to use the
browse feature the unit locks up and I have to cycle the power. I have not call
tech support yet about this issue. I would have given a 5 star rating if not for
lock up problem.

The channel master cm-7000pal. It is about time, thank you. I have had my dvr for about 2-3 months and love it. Excellent product but I wish I could send or backup My recordings to an external hard drive. Other wise I would give it a rating of 4.9. Why 4.9 because there is always room for improvement. Thank you channel master.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For over a year I procrastinated about getting rid of my $ 100 cable bill and going to over the
air TV. The one thing putting me off was that I couldn't come to terms with losing my DVR
and going back to my ancient VCR. Then I saw that Channel Master had come out with an
over the air DVR and I was sold.

Only had it a couple of days but yesterday I packed up all my cable equipment and dropped it
off at the cable company office. I am now cable free and $100 a month better off. The
Channel Master DVR is just great in fact it is basically identical to the Dish Network DVR that
my daughter has in her house.

Can not see any cons to the DVR it is all pro's.

Couldn't be more pleased and am considering a second unit. It was easy to set up
and my TV worked with the remote without having to enter any codes. The only
drawback is the program guide and that has nothing to do with the unit but is what
the stations put out there which can be sometimes incomplete. Again this is a great
unit and I would recommend it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great product. I have wanted a DVR for years, ever since TiVo came out, but I
didn't want to pay the service charges. I have antenna tv only so this worked out great.
Very easy to use and I didn't need any more that the quick set up card to be up and
running. Recorded the Daytona 500 and had my own instant replays when ever I
wanted. The guide is easy to use but in my area the guide usually only goes out about
24 hours. No problem though as you can program events just like the old VCR's. I will
never use my DVD recorder again. This thing is almost instantaneous which is one of
the things i hated about the DVD recorder. Anyone that doesn't want monthly expenses
should consider this. So glad Channel Master kept this product alive.

Excellent product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Based on what cable and satellite companies charge you the cost of this unit will be paid
off in a matter of just a few months. I found set-up very easy. I first installed the unit on a
standard definition TV. When I upgraded to HDTV it was just a simple unplug-the-old and
plug-in-the-new -- no need to re-install or repeat setup. Excellent HD video quality. Over
the air transmissions are not compressed and this DVR does not alter the excellent
image. Excellent sound. Two tuners allows two diferent programs at the same time. The
utilities menu allows you to remove stations you are not interested in, reverse the order of
how channels are displayed, and automatically checks for new stations. Programming to
record a program is real easy. I was dismayed how the DVR is constantly running -- you
can always hear the hard drive running. You would think there would be an idle time
hibernation mode to save energy and wear/tear. The ChannelMaster CM-7000PAL has
exceeded my expectations.

Great Machine, But....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This DVR is fantastic. Easy to use, Easy to set up. Great remote, Great High
Def picture and you can record 2 programs at once while watching a recorded show.

There are some problems, however. The program guide only shows details one day
in advance (definitely not a deal breaker - and hopefully will improve going
forward?) Major complaint is that the remote would stop working randomly. It
would only work if you put it 1/2 an inch away from the unit, and sometimes it
would not work at all, which would require unplugging the unit to reset it.

I called Crutchfield and they sent a new one out in 2 days, they paid the shipping
back for the old unit (fantastic customer service!!) Set the new one up and it
seems to be working better (one week later), although it has also done the same
thing a few times. Looking at other reviews on this site I noticed a few other
folks had the same problem. One thing that seems to work is to turn off the TV
set (I have a Sony 40 inch) and then turn it on again, and the DRV remote will
then work okay. Seems like the TV interferes with the DVR remote signal?

Otherwise, it is a great unit -- totally changes how we watch TV -- and we get 50
channels on Antenna in 1080 HD and no monthly cable or Tivo fees. Fantastic.

I don't usually by extended warranties, but I did purchase the 3 year deal that
Crutchfield was selling for $39 -- seemed like a reasonable deal. Once again, I
can't say enough about Crutchfield's customer service!

Old technology and few features for too high a price

Written By malchien, California on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this DVR after much research on the internet. I thought it would be
perfect for over the air recording, but the lack of some basic features made me
return it.

- Records OTA programs in HD

-Does not have an NTSC (analog) tuner. I only get TVGOs program information on
an analog channel and this DVR can't see it.
- No way to get program information over the internet despite having an ethernet
- No way to copy programs off the HDD using the USB or ethernet ports.
- HDD is too small. Most avid users are upgrading to 1 TB drives at additional cost.
- No QAM (cable) tuner.
- Must purchase an HDMI cable separately.

Had Stability Problems

Written By Mike, Michigan on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product was easy to set up, but had several stablity problems. It would reset itself.
Some recordings were split into two parts. (This might be due to resetting itself while
recording). Some programs were never recorded. The menu indicated that the
recording had been stopped, but no one stopped it. I tried to update the software, but
no update was available. I sent it back to Chrutchfield for a refund. I may try to buy
another one in the future, if some of the bugs can be worked out. Chrutchfield is a great
company. The return was easy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very pleased with this product so far. It does everything it claimed and is a huge step
up from recording on video tape. The initial setup was easy - never had to use the
manual. I bought it for my wife who could never record a program with our old setup, but
she has no trouble with this unit.
If there are any cons, it's the lack of a DVD burner. Occasionally it would be nice to burn
a recorded program to DVD.
