Our take on the Channel Master CM-7500TB1 DVR+

by Steve Kindig
Channel Master

Hey, cord-cutters!

A lot of people are looking for an alternative to writing that big monthly check to their satellite or cable TV provider. It's understandable — why pay for a zillion channels that you never watch? Channel Master's latest brilliant solution is the CM-7500TB1 over-the-air DVR. It makes it easy to record your local high-def TV broadcasts without paying for a subscription. Simply connect the CM-7500TB1 to an indoor or outdoor antenna and start recording your favorite network shows in crystal-clear HD — to watch whenever you want.

Over-the-air HD — amazing picture quality, free for the taking

Channel Master CM-7500TB1 on-screen guide

The on-screen guide makes it easy to select and record programs.

The CM-7500TB1 is the skinniest DVR we've ever seen, yet it can record up to 160 hours of high-def programs, and provides great DVR conveniences like pause and forward/reverse skip using the remote control. And as we've told people for years, regular over-the-air high-def picture quality is as good or better than cable or satellite HD.

This is a dual-tuner DVR, so you can watch one over-the-air channel while simultaneously recording another, or set it to record shows on two different channels at the same time. Setting up timer recordings is a snap. The free on-screen program guide lets you schedule recordings up to 14 days in advance.

The CM-7500TB1 is surprisingly easy to hook up and set up. First, connect an indoor or outdoor antenna suited to your distance from local station transmitters. Next, make a single-cable HDMI connection to your HDTV, then follow the step-by-step instructions of the on-screen setup wizard.

This DVR works great with virtually any HDMI-equipped TV, and it's a terrific solution for projector-based home theaters, since projectors never include a built-in tuner. Note: This DVR cannot record satellite or cable TV signals.

Stream movies from Vudu™

The CM-7500TB1 makes it easy to access great Internet entertainment, too, by connecting a network cable to the DVR's Ethernet port. You like movies? Vudu's on-demand service has thousands of HD titles available for instant streaming. And their highest-quality "HDX" option combines a stunning 1080p picture with Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound.

CM-7500TB1 DVR+ Review

Written By jk, McLean, VA on Sunday, August 31, 2014

I've owned the CM7000 and the CM7400. The CM7500TB1 DVR+ is the best yet. The expanded recording time (with the built-in 1TB disc) is a great improvement. The on-screen set-up and guide are intuitive. The tuner is strong and has no difficulty finding and holding the channels. The unit does not get hot (like the previous generations). I have not used it long enough to know if it will "freeze-up" as did the previous generations - I believe this was heat-related and it caused the unit to stop keeping time and to miss recordings. One change (not for the better) is that "deleted" recordings are really deleted. In previous generations, deleted programs were recoverable until they were recorded over. Now, one needs to be certain that a program will not be watched again before deleting.

Excellent DVR/HD-tuner

Written By Christopher, South Carolina on Saturday, August 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most people considering this unit, I bought this to "cut the cord" of my satellite provider. I already have a Roku with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu (not sure if I'll keep all those), but the missing piece of the puzzle was local TV as my venerable HDTV doesn't even have an ATSC tuner. Installation was very simple, and with an amplified rabbit-ear antenna up in the attic I am now able to pull in all the major networks: PBS, CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox, plus several extra stations. Coming from Dish Network the user interface is very intuitive, and I love that the guide data is free with an Internet connection (I'm using Ethernet). It is VERY small and compact. In fact I wish it could have been built into a larger case to help with cooling and to allow it to stack with other components (like my DVD player and AV receiver). My old Harmony remote set up with it easily though I had to teach some missing commands. Some people may find the lack of different outputs to be limiting, but since I'm using HDMI I'm fine. But be aware there are no Component or other outputs available. My only (minor) complaint is that when I'm in the guide or info screen showing program information the very edges of the sides of the screen are slightly cut off. I am not sure if that is a configuration issue with my older television or if it is a common issue. Picture and sound are excellent when there is a good signal, but some stations seem to be compressing signal to squeeze in SD subchannels.
Pros:
Compact. Easy set-up. Good picture quality for those stations that are not overly compressed. Appears to have a good-quality tuner that receives stations easily.
Cons:
Doesn't stack easily with other A/V components. Slight overscan on my older CRT 1080i TV which is most visible in the guide and program information screens.

Channel Master DVR+;

Written By Kevin, Waterford Mi on Wednesday, August 13, 2014

I bought mine from Channel Master but wanted to comment on it here. I have used my DVR+ every day now for 6 months. At first a few lockups then after firmwear update I have had zero problems for the last 4 months. Firm wear update is painless and automatic. I would suggest a hardwire connection to internet. Wireless works good but direct hardwire best for movie streaming.
Pros:
No subscription fee.
Cons:
Only one is no old time 4.3 native video on old time shows.

3 questions already asked

I have read a review that stated it was difficult to transfer a recording from the DVR's internal drive to a PC. They recommended that you purchase the 16Gb. internal drive and attach an external drive because it was easier to transfer a recording. Does anyone have any experience with this? When the Channel Master DVR+ plays back recorded OTA HD content, will the playback be in the format that was stored, such as 1080i and Dolby Digital 5.1, and will this be provided via both the HDMI and optical audio outputs? [ Kevin H  Aug 10, 2014 ]

  • I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Channel Master will record the physical format that you send it, so if you send 1080i video and 5.1 Dolby Digital it will record and play back in these formats, no matter the input. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Staff  Aug 12, 2014 ]
