Our take on the LG 60PA6500

by Steve Kindig
LG

The pros of plasma

If you're into picture quality, and you want a cinema-like home viewing experience, you owe it to yourself to check out plasma for your next TV. Plasma holds the edge when it comes to smooth motion and rich colors — high-def movies and TV shows look effortlessly real. Plasma's superior picture contrast and deep black levels are best enjoyed in rooms without a lot of windows or lamps, where you can dim or darken the lights.

LG 60PA6500 angled view

A big picture doesn't require big bucks

LG's 60PA6500 is a terrific TV, plain and simple. Its beautiful 60" picture will make every moment of your viewing time more enjoyable. Plasma is the choice of most video experts because of its vibrant picture and exceptionally wide viewing angles. You'd have a very hard time finding a similar-sized LCD TV at this price that looks this good.

Getting the best picture is now easier

The 60PA6500 looks great right out of the box, but if you'd like to fine-tune settings like contrast or color, LG makes it easy. Their Picture Wizard II avoids complicated menus — what you'll find instead are easy-to-use adjustments and a quick self-calibration feature. Piece of cake.

If a DVI-equipped device is used, a separate audio cable will also be needed from the device to the "PC/DVI Audio In" 3.5mm stereo audio jack. No audio cables are needed for an HDMI-equipped device. The HDMI jack will accept 1080p (60/24Hz), 1080i, 720p, and 480p video signals; as well as support Deep Color, and x.v.Color. The television's HDMI inputs do not accept 480i video signals.

The LG PA6500 series TV's Picture Wizard II (Easy Picture Calibration) offers self-calibration with on-screen reference points for key picture quality elements such as black level, color, tint, sharpness and backlight levels. This feature takes the guesswork out of picture adjustments.

Picture Modes: The LG Plasma TV provides auto, preset, and manual adjustment of the television's picture settings.

  • Intelligent Sensor: Let the TV do the adjustments for you. Intelligent Sensor automatically optimizes the picture to the lighting and color conditions in the room for a more enjoyable viewing experience. The LG Plasma TV's Intelligent Sensor automatically optimizes the picture to the lighting and color conditions in the room for a more enjoyable viewing experience. Unlike other sensors which can only sense brightness of ambient light, LG's "Intelligent Sensor" uses 4,096 sensing steps to evaluate its surroundings. Using a sophisticated algorithm, the LG processes picture quality elements including brightness, contrast, color, sharpness and white balance. The result is a picture optimized for its surroundings, more pleasing to watch and which can also save up to 50% in power consumption.
  • Presets: Easy to use factory presets for picture mode settings include APS (maximizes video images while reducing power consumption, without hurting picture quality), Standard (provides optimum viewing for general use), Vivid (maximizes the effect of the video by strengthening the contrast/brightness/color/sharpness), Cinema (optimizes video for watching videos), Game (provides fast response speed for fast gaming system).
  • User Adjustment: This mode allows you to adjust the video quality settings manually. Contrast (increase or decrease the gradient of the video signal), Brightness (adjusts the base level of the signal in the picture), Sharpness (adjusts the level of crispness in the edges between the light and dark areas of the picture), Color (adjusts intensity of all colors), Tint (adjusts the balance between red and green levels), Color Temp (set to warm to enhance hotter colors such as red, or set to cool to enhance cooler colors such as blue).
  • Expert Mode: The LG Plasma TV is ISFccc Ready and contains the detailed standards necessary for professional calibration of brightness, contrast, tint, sharpness, color levels and much more to meet local lighting conditions for both day and nighttime viewing. Settings are added to preset Expert 1/2 modes for easy access from your LG remote.

Picture Improvement Technology (Advanced Control): Advanced Control allows you to adjust some of the advanced video features of the LG Plasma TV.

  • Dynamic Contrast: Adjusts the contrast to keep it at the best level according to the brightness of the screen. The picture is improved by making bright parts brighter and dark parts darker.
  • Preferred Color: Set the Skin, Grass, and Sky color independently.
  • Super Resolution: Provides a crystal-clear picture by impr0ving the details in an area that has a blurry or unclear picture.
  • Gamma: You can adjust the brightness of dark areas and middle gray level areas of the picture.
  • Color Gamut: Maximizes the utilization of colors to increase color quality.
  • Edge Enhancer: Shows clearer and distinctive, yet natural edges of the video.

Additional Picture Options:  Additional picture options include:

  • Black Level: Sets the black level of the screen to the proper level.
  • Noise Reduction: Reduces screen noise without compromising video quality.
  • Film Mode: Makes video clips recorded in a film look more natural by eliminating judder effect.

Image Sticking Minimization (ISM): A frozen still picture displayed on the screen for prolonged periods can result in a ghost image. The TV's ISM prevents images from sticking or removes ghost images. There are 3 ISM modes.

  • Normal: If image sticking is never a problem, ISM is not necessary - set to Normal.
  • Orbiter: Orbiter may help prevent ghost images. However, it is best not to allow any fixed image to remain on the screen. To avoid a ghost image on the screen, the image will move every 2 minutes.
  • Color Wash: The color block with the screen moved a little and the white pattern are alternately displayed. It is difficult to see the after image on all colors. Once it has been corrected it will not be visible in any color.

Audio Features

Virtual Surround: Infinite Surround is a patented LG proprietary sound processing technology that delivers immersive 5.1 surround sound with just two front speakers.

Sound Modes: Sound Mode lets you enjoy the best sound without any special adjustment using factory presets. Standard, Music, Cinema, Sport, and Game are preset for optimum sound quality.

Tone Control: You can adjust the TV's Bass & Treble output.

Clear Voice II: Clear Voice II enhances and amplifies the frequency range of the human voice to help keep dialogue audible when background noise swells.

Auto Volume: Auto Volume makes sure that the volume level remains consistent whether you are watching a commercial or a regular TV program. Because each broadcasting station has its own signal conditions, volume adjustment may be needed every time the channel is changed. This feature allows users to enjoy stable volume levels by making automatic adjustments for each program.

Screen Off: You can turn the screen off and only sound is played through the television's speakers.

Digital Audio Output: The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital when receiving Dolby Digital surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the TV tuner. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the television via HDMI, RCA, or USB.

Accurate color & detail, and excellent value!

Written By Jason, Greenfield, MA on Friday, April 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I made the switch from the LCD market to plasma and I am more than impressed. Efficient detail reproduction, and easy to navigate settings to adjust the color display from everything to gaming to my favorite, movie watching. As much as LED LCD tvs seem to impress with features, the ability to see the picture evenly from any angle and the dramatically better black reproduction made this, along with it's superb price point, the tv to choose. Sure, it lacks the "smart tv" apps built in, but seriously, with having an OPPO blu-ray player and xbox 360 for that, those additions just make for a waste of money. This tv also comes with 3 HDMIs, something that several tvs in this price arena do not offer (only 2).

A simple setup of the base to the tv, and all was ready to go. (I had to slightly loosed the swivel stand's bolt to get it to swivel.) The sound may not be soundbar quality, but for most of us out there, this is more than enjoyable, with a huge difference from my older Toshiba 37" speakers. While there may be a slightly less amount of black color display compared to higher rated Panasonics, the price difference makes this the best tv in the $1000 range for those a little more conservative with their spending who'd rather save that extra cash for buying the movies & games that I will be enjoying on this screen. Recommended!
Pros:
Accurate colors and flesh tones, easy setup, good speakers, easy to use color adjustments
Cons:
Slightly less black depth than pricier name brands (though still dramatically better than LED LCDs & LCDs).

Great TV for a large space

Written By Chicago TV Junkie, Chicago, IL on Wednesday, December 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great TV. LG has always made great products, and this 60 in plasma lives up to the brand quality. With a TV this size, one really has to be sure to be seated at least 10 feet from the screen. Since I have a pretty bright room (open floor-to-ceiling windows), sometimes the plasma TV is dim, but that's to be expected. For the money and size, this was a great value purchase.
Pros:
Size; Price; Ease of Use
Cons:
Versatility of room placement based on light exposure; Number of Audio/Visual output ports

Very nice for the price

Written By Scottydoesntknow, Clovis, CA on Saturday, December 22, 2012

Great tv for the price. I didn't need 3d or any silly smart apps of any sort, just a nice big tv and this delivered. I've been using it for about a week and am very happy. I have it hooked to a stereo receiver so I have no idea how well it's own sound/speakers work, but the picture is really nice when watching anything HD through cable or a blu ray player. We used a setup program to adjust the picture settings and I'd say we're happy with everything, though the picture could be a tad brighter I think. It puts out much less heat than my old plasma that is now 7 years old and likely uses double the power that this new one does. It's nice and thing, big, 1080, sharp picture, really happy with it
Pros:
Price, size, quality, thinness, picture
Cons:
Picture is dim, no apps or 3d

Good TV

Written By Chris, Central Indiana on Sunday, December 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV got really good reviews so I bought it when it got down to 900$ this December. Its your basic plasma TV and I just bought for the screen since I connect my home theatre PC and Wii to it to connect to on line media.

The TV stand swivels, which is a really cool feature for a TV this big I thought.

I have only had it for a couple weeks.
Pros:
Good screen. Plenty of inputs. Actually decent sound, better than I expected but not surround sound. Solid build and the bevel around the edges is small/thin. In general it is thin for a 60incher. No tax.
Cons:
Sort of heavy but I can lift it by myself with some effort. Better with 2. You will probably have to tweak the settings a bit. If you google you can find some settings for tweaking the picture. Although I would guess almost all new TVs have this issue since its a lot of personal preferance there.

Great deal!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic value for money. There is no point buying a smart TV because they cost a lot and in a few years time the in-built 'smarts' are going to look decidely dumb. Far better and cheaper to buy a dumb TV with a good picture and then buy a video streamer for <$100. You can update the streamer when something newer and better comes out.

The picture on this TV is very good. Not the best I have seen, but very good, especially when you consider the price! (Pioneer Elite is wonderful but very expensive!) Considering what I paid at Crutchfield I am delighted. The TV also looks stylish, not something that LG is normally known for but this one does look good. The frame is not as dainty as the frameless LED-backlit LCD displays, but is still small for a plasma. The only thing that this TV lacks that would be nice to have is 3D. But I am not that bothered, 3D always makes me feel strange and who wants to sit there wearing 3D glasses looking like a dork? So I can live without 3D. I used it with a Denon AVR1912 and Energy Classic 5.0 speakers so I can't comment on the LG's sound quality
Pros:
Stylish, large, good picture quality, extremely good value for money, no money wasted on 'smarts' that will look extremely dumb in 2-3 years time
Cons:
No 3D, not as good picture quality as Pioneer Elite costing 6x as much

I Bought Two

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Yes I could have spent more but why? These were the 8th and 9th flat-panels that I've purchased. Great value. Compare very very well with my previous Sony, Samsung and Panasonic models. Remember that technology is changing so fast that you don't want to "invest" in TVs. Buy what you need for the next 18 months and then upgrade.
Pros:
Thin, light, large
Cons:
People think I'm wealthy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most things, you get what you paid for. For the price it was well worth the money. I could have sacrificed size for quality, but I wanted size. No, it isn't the best quality, but it is pretty good. I'd give it an 80% out of 100. It has enough settings to fiddle with to get the quality you are looking for. If you are a videophile, I'd look elsewhere, but if you just want to drop money into the biggest tv you can afford, this is a good one to get. You will get some glare but that is typical for a plasma. I really only notice it though on a black screen. Otherwise, the reflection isnt all that noticeable. It has two features that help if you get some burn-in, but I havent noticed any at all. It has a very attractive bezel, but who really cares about that?

Not the best quality tv, but I'd wager it is the biggest and best you can get for this price range. I dont really see how you can complain about the quality of a 60 inch plasma that you only paid a grand for. Given the cost, I think the quality is fantastic. Your average consumer won't notice anything wrong with this set. Although it has not come out yet, I'd wager Consumer Reports will list this set as a best buy....and rightly so.
Pros:
Affordable, big, good picture quality, lots of settings, best bang for your buck
Cons:
Given the price range, I can't really think of any.

LG 60PA6500

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall for the price paid it is a good value. The picture is not as sharp as desired, but I can live with it. I have played with the settings, and used multiple configurations, but I just can't quite get it to the sharpness that it should be. The colors are very vibrant, and really stand out in a dark room. Where I have the TV positioned, every morning the sunlight shines directly on the screen, which I knew would happen going in, and it handles the bright light very well. The Intelligent Sensor is more of a hindrance than usefulness. It will make the screen very dull at times, and takes away from the picture quality. My only real gripe, is a week after I received it, the price was reduced. If you are looking for a low budget TV that shows a good quality picture, this is definitely one to get. If you are the type of person to nit pick picture quality to death, then move right on past this one.
Pros:
Great price, decent picture, and sound.
Cons:
The sharpness needs some work.

Disappointing

Written By bizobb, Western NC on Saturday, June 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 50" Samsung Plasma got zapped by lightning despite being on a surge protector. Thought I'd go a bit bigger with the replacement and this set seemed like a good value for someone not needing wifi connection or 3D. Really wish I would've gone to see this set somewhere. It has nowhere near the picture quality of the Samsung. Picture is dim, HD looks more like standard definition, even after adjusting with a calibration disc. Even BluRay discs now look like DVDs. If you're looking for a great picture, this isn't the TV for you.
Pros:
It's big.
Cons:
Very poor picture quality for a plasma TV.
