Now you don't have to choose between HD DVD and Blu-ray, or worry about so-called "format wars." The LG BH100 plays Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, letting you experience both of these exciting new high-def formats with one convenient player. Not only can the BH100 play both types of discs, it can also output the picture of either one to your compatible HDTV in top-of-the-line 1080p resolution, for incredibly lifelike, ultra-detailed images.

This player excels when it comes to audio, too. It includes decoders for two advanced new surround sound formats — Dolby® Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. Both use less compression than standard Dolby Digital to deliver dynamic, wraparound sound that perfectly complements the BH100's high-def picture. You can enjoy these soundtracks using any home theater receiver with a multichannel analog input. And there's no need to get rid of that DVD collection just yet — the BH100 also plays and upconverts regular DVDs as well.

Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

not the best out there

Written by: Joe from Mountaintop. PA on June 21, 2007

The LG BH 100 is not the best dual player out there. Well technically it is, because it is the ONLY dual player available now. But beware! I had it briefly when it first came out in Feb 2007. The biggest problem is it does not support all the HD-DVD features, such as interactivity, special menus, etc. THe BH100 is simply a glorified Blu-Ray player that happens to play HD-DVDs, but not the way they were intended to be played. And with the introduction of the new Sony BDP300, you can get that unit and a Toshiba HD-DVD unit both together at less than what you would pay for the LG unit alone. So everyone, think about this before you rush to get the LG or if you can't spare the room for seperate HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players, wait until a dual unit is manufactured that supports all features of both formats.

Best solution out there

I've owned the LG BH100 for a couple of weeks now and have tested it on Onkyo's New TX-SR805 Dolby TrueHD HDMI Reciever. It is fast at loading, remote is VERY responsive and backlit, also upconverts great for DVD's. I really like the touch sensitive buttons, cool look. Performance is great; however I gave it a 4 star because:

-No CD's
-No HDMI 1.3

It will Decode Dolby True HD 5.1 internally and send it to the reciever as PCM MultiChannel, which is the same really, If it had HDMI 1.3 then my reciever would light up Dolby TrueHD and it would unpack and decode the audio to PCM multichannel, so I guess it is the same, but it would be nice if the reciever did everything since it is THX and the player is not. Over all this is a very nice player and a great solution for both formats.

Product Research

Overview: The LG BH100 Super Blu Player is the world's first multi-format DVD player capable of handling all three digital video formats: Blu-ray Disc, HD-DVD, and standard DVD. It is capable of outputting a true high-definition, 1080p resolution, video playback.

Unique Optical Pickup: LG's unique optical pickup technology allows the unit's blue laser to read information from either Blu-ray Discs or from HD-DVD. Each of the new high-definition disc technologies store their information at a different depth inside the disc. LG has created a lens/pickup assembly capable of reading that information regardless of where it is found on the disc.

Compatible Discs: The player can playback the following discs:

  • Blu-Ray Discs (BD-ROM): This player fully supports standard Blu-Ray discs.
  • HD-DVD Discs: This player can play high definition audio/visual content from HD-DVD discs, but does not support interactive "HDi" features available from many HD-DVD discs.
  • DVD-Video: Includes DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW

Note: This player is not capable of playing CDs.

BD-Java: This unit supports BD-Java (Blu-ray Disc Java), a user-friendly interactive menu system to make your viewing experience easy and entertaining through high-definition animations, advanced subtitles, and scene searches. Four color buttons on the remote are for use with BD-Java.

Resolution Settings: The Super Blu player provides several output resolutions for the HDMI and Component Video output jacks. You can change the resolution using the Setup menu or pressing the Resolution button when the player is in the stop mode. Only resolutions supported by the connected TV are available. The output resolutions include:

  • 1080p: outputs 1080 lines of progressive video (only for the HDMI connection and Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs recorded in 1080p)
  • 1080i: outputs 1080 lines of interlaced video (for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD-Video through the HDMI and Component Video outputs)
  • 720p: outputs 720 lines of progressive video (for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD-Video through the HDMI and Component Video outputs)
  • 480p: outputs 480 lines of progressive video (for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD-Video through the HDMI and Component Video outputs)
  • 480i: outputs 480 lines of interlaced video (for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD-Video through the Component Video and Composite Video outputs)

Note: For copy-protected discs played through the Component Video output, the resolution is automatically changed to 480i.

1080i Upconversion: Standard DVDs can be upconverted to 1080i resolution when viewed on a 1080i-capable TV.

Digital-to-Analog Converters: This unit is equipped with a 27MHz/8-bit Video D/A Converter for superior picture quality. The unit also has a 96 kHz/24-bit Audio D/A converter.

Multi-channel Audio Options: The BH100 can be connected to a multi-channel receiver in two ways. If the receiver is equipped with a multi-channel decoder (Dolby Digital, MPEG2, or DTS), you can make a digital multi-channel connection via an optical or coaxial digital cable. You can also make an analog multi-channel connection to the receiver. The unit contains a multi-channel decoder and a 5.1-channel analog audio output. Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD are supported, but their capability is limited to 5.1 channels. Dolby TrueHD processing is for two channels only.

Bass Management: If you are using the unit's built-in 5.1-channel decoder, you can set the size and presence of the system's speakers. Each speaker can be set to Large, Small, or None.

Parental Control: You can block the playback of certain rated DVDs based on their content. You can select a rating of 1 (most restrictive) to 8 (least restrictive). You can also select "unlock", disabling parental control, allowing the disc to play in full. Parental control is protected by a numeric password.

Markers: You can start playback from up to nine memorized points. You can set a marker at a point on the DVD where you'd like to quickly return. After markers are set on the disc, you can search for a specific marker by number, and begin playback from that point.

Remote Control: The supplied remote control can operate the DVD player, as well as TVs made by other manufacturers. You can control the input source, channel selection, volume, and power of TV.
