Our take on the LG DN788

Experience DVD's crisp picture and sound with the budget-friendly DN788 from LG. If you own an HDTV with a digital video input, this player can upconvert DVD images to better match your set's high-resolution screen. But you don't necessarily need a high-def TV to get a great picture — the DN788 includes a full set of standard video outputs to give you a clean DVD image on almost any television.

When it's time to switch from movies to music, simply pop in a CD. The versatile DN788 can play regular CDs and home-burned discs, including those loaded with MP3 and WMA tunes. Plus, it plays discs containing JPEG digital photos so you can display pictures of your latest vacation on your TV screen for easy sharing. A USB port makes it easy to enjoy music and photos stored on a portable USB memory drive.

Features

HDMI Output: The LG DN788 single-disc DVD player has an HDMI output, in addition to a component video, S-video, and a composite video output. The HDMI output supports both video and audio on a single digital connection.

1080i Video Upconversion: This unit will upconvert DVD video signals up to 1080i. The output resolution can be set as follows:

Output Connection Available Resolution
HDMI Video Out 1920 x 1080i
1280 x 720p
720 x 480p
720 x 480i
Component Video Out 1920 x 1080i
1280 x 720p
720 x 480p
720 x 480i
S-Video Out 720 x 480i
Video Out 720 x 480i

Digital-to-Analog Converters: This unit is equipped with a 14-bit, 108MHz video D/A converter, and a 24-bit, 192kHz audio D/A converter.

Playable Discs: The DN788 is capable of playing the following discs:

  • DVD:
    • DVD Video
    • DVD-R, DVD-RW (including discs recorded in the VR (video recording) format)
    • DVD+R, DVD+RW
    • MP3, WMA, JPEG files on DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW
  • CD:
    • Audio CD
    • CD-R, CD-RW
    • MP3, WMA, JPEG files on CD-R or CD-RW

USB Input: The front-panel mounted USB input allows you to connect a USB Flash drive and play MP3/WMA music files or JPEG image files. The player supports USB devices with up to 1000 files.

MP3/WMA Playback: Discs containing MP3 files should be recorded at a bit rate between 8 and 320 kbps. WMA files should be recorded at a bit rate of 32 to 384 kbps. The CD-R physical format should be ISO 9660. The total number of files in a folder should be less than 1012 files.

JPEG Playback: It is recommended that JPEG image files of less than 5 million pixels be recorded onto CDs or DVDs to avoid file loading time. Like MP3 and WMA, no more than 1012 files should be in any given folder. You can zoom in 3 steps (2x, 4x, and 9x) and move around the image while zoomed in. Music files on the disc can be played back at the same time as the photo files. (The zoom function and music/picture playback are not available when the resolution is set to 720p or 1080i.)

Black Level Expansion:  You can turn on/off the unit's Black Level Expansion (B.L.E.) to select the black level of playback. When on, the black level is expanded, with a 0 IRE cutoff. When off, the black level is standard with a 7.5 IRE cutoff.

Parental Control: You can limit the playback of certain rated DVDs based on their content. When the parental control function is "locked", you can select a rating of 1 (most restrictions) to 8 (least restrictive). When the function is "unlocked," parental control is not active, and the disc plays in full. Parental Control is protected by a password.

Dynamic Range Control: When watching a DVD, you can compress the dynamic range of the audio output, allowing you to listen to a movie at a lower volume without losing sound clarity. The DRC can be turned on or off as desired.

Markers: You can start playback from up to nine memorized points. You can set a marker at a point on the DVD where you'd like to quickly return. After markers are set on the disc, you can search for a specific marker by number, and begin playback from that point.

Last Scene Memory: The player memorizes the last scene from the last disc that is viewed. The last scene remains in memory even if you remove the disc from the player or switch off the player. If you load a disc that has a memorized scene, the player automatically recalls that scene.

Remote Control: The supplied remote control can operate the DVD player, as well as TVs made by LG/GoldStar, Zenith, Samsung, Sony, and Hitachi. You can control the input source, volume, and power of TV.

excellent stopgap

Written By bowenaero, boise, id on Wednesday, April 02, 2008

i purchased this equipment for two features that matched my first generation hi-def mitsubishi. it would 1) upconvert thru component connections and 2) optical audio output. it does both admirally. it is sensitive to grease smudges and will pixalate occasionally. keep those discs clean!! it will keep it's hi-def resolution setting until you put a copy protected disc in then it will drop back to 480p and stay there until you reset it. a minor inconvience but it cost it a star. for an under $70 player it has excellent value and will carryover to my new hdmi 1.3 hi-def tv when i can afford it.

Good picture, finicky optics

Written By John, MA on Thursday, February 07, 2008

I have a Pioneer Elite 1080i plasma, so I decided to go with the lesser LG model (rather than 1080p DN798). I am truly pleased with the picture quality of the DVD's. I have two complaints, but they wouldn't stop me from buying this again:

1) The DVD has to be spotless. Scratches and dust cause the player to freeze for a while and then skip large chunks of video. Not a problem for videos I own, annoying for videos I rent.

2) The default display quality is 480p, and the player lets you upgrade to 720p and 1080i, but it rarely remembers my last entry. After the DVD has started playing and I notice the player is at 480p, the only way to switch the quality back to my preferred is to stop the DVD completely.

All in all, a good complement to my HDTV.
