Our take on the Mitsubishi LT-52244

by Steve Kindig

The LT-52244 is Mitsubishi's finest 52" flat-panel TV, boasting exceptional performance, versatility, and styling. The thin-frame cabinet and high-gloss "black pearl" finish set a new standard for flat-panel elegance. The 1920 x 1080-pixel screen provides the highest HD resolution available, and Mitsubishi has improved other key areas of picture quality, too.

Smooth120Hz™ ensures blur-free images for sports, movies, and video games
Smooth, smear-free motion has been a major challenge for LCD TVs, especially when viewing fast-action material like sports and video games. Mitsubishi's Smooth120Hz anti-blur technology doubles the traditional LCD display rate for clearer, more natural motion.

Color without compromise
Mitsubishi's rear-projection TVs have earned a reputation for rich, vivid, accurate color, and that's evident in their flat-panel models, too. The LT-52244's Full Spectrum Color™ system includes wide-range backlight technology for a 25% gain in color range compared to standard LCDs. The PerfectColor and PerfecTint color controls provide advanced color processing and adjustment.

Plenty of HD viewing options
The LT-52244 has built-in tuners for receiving your local digital and analog over-the-air broadcasts (antenna required). You can use the set's built-in digital cable TV tuner with or without a CableCARD. If your cable provider supports CableCARD, leasing one will let you watch every channel you subscribe to, including scrambled programs, without a set-top box.

The future-ready back-panel "jack pack" sports a trio of 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs for connecting the latest Blu-ray players, HD DVRs, and video game consoles. For added versatility, there's a side input with HDMI and component video for easy hookup of an HD camcorder, plus a USB port for viewing digital photos.

Features

Integrated HDTV Tuner: The widescreen Mitsubishi LCD TV has an internal HDTV tuner able to receive both over-the-air HDTV broadcasts (received via an antenna) and non-encrypted digital cable broadcasts, including non-scrambled HDTV cable programming. There is also a CableCard slot, giving you a way to receive encrypted cable broadcasts without a cable box.

Digital Cable Ready (CableCard Slot): The Mitsubishi HDTV can descramble a cable provider's one-way digital signal with the use of an optional CableCard security module (contact your local cable provider for availability and service). The CableCard is used in place of a traditional cable box to access digital cable programming (including high definition).

Smooth 120Hz: Mitsubishi's Smooth120Hz refresh rate eliminates motion blur, especially in fast moving action scenes.

1080p High-Definition LCD Display System: The Mitsubishi LT-52244 LCD Flat Panel HDTV features a full 1920 x 1080 LCD panel so you get a true 1080p picture without any scaling from a 1080p source. All non-1080p images input into the television will be up-converted and also displayed at 1080p. The television's four HDMI inputs will accept video signals from 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p (24Hz, 30Hz, and 60Hz) sources; while its three HD component video inputs will accept video signals from 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i sources.

Plush 1080p: Mitsubishi developed the Plush 1080p technology so that everything you watch looks better on the 1080p HDTV. It reformats 720p and 1080i HDTV signals in order to fill the TV's native resolution 1080p screen with a sharp, clear picture. Plush 1080p scales and converts the picture precisely with minimal side effects, achieving greater detail and clarity.

Tru1080p Processing: Mitsubishi's Tru1080p Processing maintains 1080p high definition signals as 1080p from beginning to end of the video signal. All 1080p HDMI, DVI (with adapter) and 1080p broadcasts signals are passed through with no down conversions. This advanced 1080p technology for HDTV viewing delivers over 2 million pixels to you on-screen for a full and true 1920 x 1080 resolution.

xvColor System: x.v.Color is the new standard in high definition color. The television's x.v.Color Wide Color Palette enables up to 80% more color than standard HDTV for increased realism and vivid, natural colors.

Deep Color Technology: Deep Color creates smooth transitions between different shades and eliminates color bands and complements the x.v.Color system's wide color pallet. Enabled by HDMI 1.3, Deep Color goes beyond previous 8-bit HDTV.

Color 4D Video Noise Reduction: Mitsubishi's exclusive Color 4D Video Noise Reduction system used advanced algorithms to better identify video noise from fine detail and correct the signal rather that distort it. The advanced 4D Video Noise Reduction system corrects the image in four dimensions - horizontally, vertical, within each frame and across multiple frames to provide and image that is crystal clear and very detailed.

PerfectColor: PerfectColor is another exclusive Mitsubishi feature that gives you the ability to adjust the intensity of six separate colors (Magenta, Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue) independently of each other and separately for every input. PerfectColor is a full color matrix, much more powerful than a conventional color intensity control with only red versus green color balance.

SharpEdge: The SharpEdge signal processing system enhances horizontal and vertical edges for stunning picture precision. SharpEdge senses the vertical boundary and amplifies it while minimizing distortion. The end result is crisp and sharp edges.

DeepField Imager: The DeepField Imager feature constantly adjusts brightness and contrast for optimum settings in all areas of the picture. It can even optimize complex scenes containing both dark and bright areas. DeepField Imager analyzes 135 sectors of the picture in real time, while determining the optimum blend of contrast and brightness settings for the picture using advanced algorithms. Based on its picture analysis it dynamically adjusts for areas that are too high or low in contrast and/or too dark or bright and displays the best balanced picture in every scene.

TV Display Formats: The TV offers the following TV display formats to choose from:

  • Standard: This is the TV's full-screen format. HDTV signals will use this format. 4:3 images are stretched evenly from side to side. This mode is available for all signals.

  • Wide Expand: This mode enlarges the picture, cropping some of the image on both sides. This expanded format is useful to remove or reduce black side bars added to narrow images that are converted to 16:9 signals for digital broadcast. This mode is available for 1080i, 720p, digital SD 16:9 and digital HD signals.

  • Expand: This setting enlarges the picture to fill the screen, cropping off some of the image at the tope and bottom. This is useful for reducing letter box top and bottom bars. This mode is available for 480i, 480p, and digital SD 4:3 signals only.

  • Zoom: This mode enlarges the picture, cropping off some of the image at each side and top and bottom. This is useful for removing or reducing black top and bottom bars. This mode is available for 480i, 480p and SD 4:3 signals only.

  • Stretch: This format stretches a narrow 4:3 image across the screen; there is less stretch in the center than at the sides. This allows the entire narrow image to be displayed across the screen with less distortion than is seen in the Standard format. This format is available for 480i, 480p, and SD 4:3 signals only.

  • Stretch Plus: Similar to the Stretch format, but to minimize distortions on the side, the picture is expanded to crop off portion of the top and bottom. This mode is available for 480i, 480p and SD 4:3 signals only.

  • Narrow: This format displays narrow 4:3 images in their original shape and adds stationary black side bars to fill the screen. This format is available for 480i, 480p and SD 4:3 signals only

Picture Mode: Picture Mode allows you to optimize the image for different lighting conditions. You can choose from the following Picture Modes:

  • Bright: Suited for most daytime viewing.

  • Natural: Suited for most nighttime viewing.

  • Brilliant: For use under strong light

  • Game: Optimizes picture and video processing for gaming consoles.

Picture Settings: In additions to the four Picture Modes, the TV offers the following custom picture settings:

  • Contrast: The contrast setting adjusts the white-to-black-level of the picture.

  • Brightness: The brightness setting adjusts the overall brightness of the picture.

  • Color: The color setting adjusts the color intensity.

  • Tint: The tint setting adjusts the red-to-green ratio.

  • Sharpness: The sharpness setting adjusts the detail and clarity of the picture.

Color Temperature: The television also features a Color Temperature setting which allows you to adjust how white is displayed on the TV. You can choose from Low or High.

Backlight: This feature adjusts the brightness of the television's backlight to better suit your room's lighting.

Audio Settings: The television features independent Bass, Treble, and Balance settings.

Surround Settings: The television features the following surround speaker settings:

  • Simulated Stereo: The TV creates a simulated stereo effect when watching a no-stereo program.

  • Surround Sound: The TV creates a simulated surround effect when watching a stereo program.

Level Sound: Level Sound automatically equalizes the volume level when there are significant sound-level differences between program segments, such as between regular programming and commercials.

TV Guide Daily: TV Guide Daily is a subscription-free guide system. It lists regular, digital, and high-definition programming being broadcast in your area over the next twenty-four hours. TV Guide Daily listings are not provided by Mitsubishi and require over-the-air or direct cable (no cable box) access to stations carrying TV Guide Daily program listings. If listings are not available in your area or become discontinued by the local provider, TV Guide Daily will not operate. TV Guide Daily does not provide program listings for satellite TV systems.

ChannelView: ChannelView shows memorized channels on ANT1 and ANT2. It displays digital channel names and program information as sent by broadcasters or your local cable service providers (may be incomplete). No program information is displayed for analog channels. An analog channel name is displayed only if you assigned a name to it in the Setup Menu. You can assign a six character name to either an analog or digital channel.

Favorite Channels: The Favorite Channels feature lets you store groups of favorite channels in up to six different Favorite memory banks. This allows you to store Favorite Channels by each household member or by category or content. You can store the same channel in multiple Favorite banks.

Channel Name: You can assign a custom name up to six characters long to memorized channels. You can name analog channels and digital channels if they are broadcast without pre-assigned names.

Closed Captioning: The television features both analog and digital closed captioning:

  • Analog Captions: For analog channels, broadcasters can send either standard closed captions or text service. Standard closed captions follow the dialogue of the characters on screen and display in a small section of the screen. Text-service closed captions often contain information such as weather or news not related to the current programs and cover a large portion of the screen.

  • Digital Captions: For digital channels, broadcasters can send up to six different caption selections or can send analog captions that are the same as those sent by the analog station. Each TV station may broadcast only on or two types of captions or none at all. The TV cannot decode closed captions received on component or HDMI inputs. Digital channels allow you to select front type, size, color, background and opacity of the closed caption characters.

USB Photo Port: You can view digital JPEG photo files up to 5 mega pixel on the TV using the USB Photo port located on the right side of the television. You can connect your digital camera, USB thumb-drive or USB card reader. The TV's Type-A USB port supports still images recorded on digital cameras using the Exchangeable Image File Format, version 2.1 (EXIF 2.1) standard for digital still cameras and Design Rules for Camera File Systems version 1.0 (DCF 1.0). You can view still images in a single photo, slideshow, or thumbnail fashion. A single photo can be rotated clockwise in 90-degree increments. The thumbnail mode allows you to view 10 still images at once. The slideshow mode's interval and can be adjusted to your preference.

Note: The TV can read JPEG files as created by a digital camera. If you edit a picture file on a computer and resave the image, the TV may be unable to read the resaved image file.

PC Compatible: The television can be used as a computer monitor and connected to your PC via one of the TV's HDMI inputs using an HDMI cable, DVI-to-HDMI cable, or an HDMI cable with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You may also need to connect the DVI/PC Stereo RCA Audio input of the TV to your computer for sound. You can adjust the horizontal and vertical position of the computer image. The television supports the following PC video formats from 640 x 480 to 1920 x 1080: VGA, W-VGA, SVGA, W-SVGA, XGA, SXGA, WXGA, PC 720p and PC 1080p.

Parental Lock: The Parental Lock menu give you control over different types of parental controls. You must create and use a custom pass code to open this menu to enable or disable the lock options. The parental controls available are as follows:

  • Ratings: V-Chip technology lets you restrict access to programming based on program-rating signals sent by the broadcaster or by movie ratings.

  • Lock By Time: Lock By Time allows you to block all use of the TV during specified hours of the day or night.

  • Side Panel Lock: Side Panel Lock lets you disable controls on the side panel to prevent inadvertent changes to TV settings.

  • Channel Lock: This feature locks specific channels so that a pass code is required to view them.

TV Timer: The TV Timer feature allows you to set a day and time for the TV to turn on automatically and the device and channel to display when it switches on. If the TV is already on at the requested time, the TV still automatically tunes to the channel you designated in the Timer menu. You can select a Daily timer, Mon-Friday timer or individual days of the week.

Sleep Timer: The TV's Sleep Timer can be set to 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

Energy Mode: The Energy Mode option lets you select the TV's level of power consumption while the TV is turned off. You can choose between either Low Power or Fast Power On. The Low Power setting uses less energy, but the TV takes longer to power up.

Remote Control

Multi-Brand Remote: The television comes supplied with a multi-brand IR remote control with illuminating buttons. The remote is pre-coded to operate Mitsubishi and other manufacture's components such as Cable Boxes, DTV Receivers, Satellite Receivers, VCRs, DVR, Laser Disc Players, DVD Players/Recorders, DVRs, A/V Receivers, Audio Amplifiers, and CD players.

NetCommand For HDMI Devices: The TV's remote can operate some functions of compatible HDMI devices able to receive commands through the HDMI cable without any setup. For example, compatible A/V receiver's connected via HDMI will power on with the Television's remote control and automatically switch inputs to the correct audio input when you select an audio/video device in the TV's Input Selection menu. NetCommand also allows the TV's remote control to operate Play, Pause, Stop, Record, Search and Menu functions of compatible VCRs, DVD players and DVRs via HDMI connection.

NetCommand IR: The NetCommand IR feature provides on-screen control of analog-connected products such as your AV receiver, DVD player, satellite receiver and/or VCR. To set it up, you simply "tell" the TV what products are connected and "teach it" their IR (infrared) commands. The TV's remote will then take control through the TV's NetCommand system, eliminating the clutter of all those other remote controls. It's capable of learning most IR remote control codes from standard home theater product, rather than relying on a pre-programmed library of codes. The TV comes supplied with a 9' IR emitter cable that features 4 IR blasters for 4 controllable audio/video components and a male mini-jack connector that plugs into the back of the television. Netcommand's IR blasters can also be used to control scheduled recordings of other connected audio/video devices.

Mounting Options

Removable Stand: The display comes mounted on a removable tabletop stand. The included stand allows the TV to be manually swiveled up to 30-degrees left or right. The stand can be detached by removing 4 Philips-head screws from the back panel of the TV.

Optional Wall Mount Brackets: The stand can be removed, allowing you to wall-mount the TV using an optional wall-mount bracket. The TV has 4 threaded screw holes with a horizontal spacing of 7-3/4" (200mm) and a vertical spacing of 7-3/4" (200mm). The screw holes all accept M6 (6mm) machine screws.

Input and Output Notes

You can choose from the following names - Cable box, Camcorder, DVD, DVD2, DVR, Game, HD Disc, Satellite, VCR, or PC. The TV ignores any unused inputs, so the result is an uncluttered Input Selection menu where you can easily find and select connected devices by name.

High Definition Video Inputs: The TV features the following HD video inputs.

  • Component Video: The television features three component video inputs (2 rear/1 side) that support analog transfer of 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i video signals. This provides a high level of flexibility when connecting DVD player/recorder, cable boxes and satellite receivers to the television.

Used with an adapter, these inputs also accept compatible DVI video signals (any of the HDMI inputs can be used with the PC/DVI RCA audio input). The HDMI inputs can also accept a variety of PC signals and resolutions.

Dual Antenna Inputs: The television features two 75-ohm F-connector RF antenna/cable inputs that can each receive digital and analog over-the-air channels from a VHF/UHF antenna or non-scrambled digital/analog cable source.

We have had our Mitsubushi mdl LT-52244 for almost 4 years now. When it works it is a nice TV. I bought this model because I was told it was the best I could buy in this size(52"). It worked great for 13 months then we had problems with the picture, it had a vertical line down the screen. Had a service man come out from a place that the factory reccomended, he replaced the whole panel. @ months later he was back out and replaced it again. The picture has never been crisp since then. Now the entire left 1/4 of the screen is what I call digitized and you can't see anything on that side. For what it costs to get a repair man out here I think I may be better off buying something new. Not what i expected from what i was told was the best.
Pros:
Nice picture when it worked
Cons:
the price for something that only lasts a couple of years

We have not tried it on satellite yet, but it is very clear on the X-box. At first it sounded like the sound was coming from a tin box but We changed the sound settings and now it is sounding pretty good. We have only had it two hours and are very happy at this point.
