Sony 80-Minute Blank MiniDiscs

Overview

Our take on the Sony 80-Minute Blank MiniDiscs

Details:

Sony MiniDiscs are small enough to fit into your shirt pocket, yet they are durable enough to record, erase, and re-record up to a million times with no appreciable loss of sound quality. These blank MDs feature up to 80 minutes of recording time each; if your recorder is MiniDisc Long Play (MDLP™)-capable, you can squeeze over 2-1/2 hours' worth of music onto a single MD in LP2 mode, or over 5 hours' worth in LP4 mode.

Details:

  • unlimited digital re-recording with no sound degradation
  • rugged, ultrasonically welded shell
  • lifetime warranty

I've been using Sony Mini Discs for over 10 years in live performance of music. As a solo performer, I record the 'band' in my home studio, and accompany myself as a steel drummer/entertainer. Sony quality has always been high & reliable, and the sound is excellent.

My favorite audio recording format. These Sony blanks are great and at a good price. Easy to make digital recordings and easy editing. Sadly, the Mini Disc never really took off in the US.

Pros: Typical Sony quality

Cons: Sadly, Sony has stopped making Mini Disc players.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even though Sony has declared the mini disc format obsolete, I find it to be a absolutely wonderful format. I currently own 2 home decks and 2 portable models AND 2 car six disc changers. You can still find brand new models available on ebay and other websites. I was a early adopter when the format first appeared and have stuck to it ever since. They say that mp3s killed the minidisc, in the fashion that VHS killed Betamax, and as betamax was superior to VHS, MD are also better than mp3s. As lemmings that jump off cliffs, some people will prefer what the masses buy and do, rather than appreciate the simple quality of a better product , which is......Minidisc

Pros: recordable over and over, a million times they say. I still have not tested that theory yet. The CDRs I use in my car stereo and other places get scratched and lose the ability to track correctly after the dye degrades, that leads to ALOT of CDRs that get trashed. I have yet to throw away a failed minidisc !

Cons: no HI MD discs available? fer shame fer shame.......

Good to have a source for MDs

Sony continues to produce the best Mini Discs on the market. I use these discs for my master music mixes. High performance sound reproduction, highest quality of materials of construction. Gold discs will last longer, the outer casing is constructed of a stronger grade of plastic. Not only do transfers of music from CDs and Tapes sound great, but also Record Albums, and Radio recordings. I have not used these dics for HiMD recordings yet, but I expect the same high quality results. Crutchfield offers great pricing on these discs as well as very resonable shipping rates.

MiniDisc better than R-CDs

Great media for recording old tapes or LPs. You can input all the text info as well as the music. A great media for recording musicians to use as the initial layout for the CD prior to making the master as one is able to re-arrange the songs and text material after the minidisc is recorded allowing for different try outs of the tune order on the master. Never understood why this media never took off . Glad they are still around and the machines to record with.

Sony MD Discs Versatile, Long Lasting, Long Playing

Written by: michael from Denver, CO on May 29, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield neglects to mention that if you have a hiMd recorder like my mzrh-1 or other new md players that you can record up to 13 hours on to one MD, and up to 45 hours on a HiMd disc. If you record live music, you can plug a microphone into your md recorder(if it has a mic jack) and record in CD quality..wave format for 28 minutes roughly with a regular md, or y two hours with a hiMd disc or md disc and selecting hiMd recording mode. Unlike a ipod or similar contraptions you don't need to have a computer to put music or speech onto your md..not if you have a home md deck..or a line in cord or mic. Sony finally got rid of the silly digital rights management restrictions and the latest version of sonicstage works great. It was the initial poor software that hurt the minidisc format not its superior sound quality over ipods or its ability to record and play without the need for a computer if desired. With removable media you have more capacity than any hard drive or flash type device..the equivalent of thousands of terabytes if you think about it. I love having music on a removable media that won't disappear with the next harddrive crash, whether it is your ipods harddrive or your computers. I drive a truck for a living, and have killed two ipods and one zune with the vibration and dust..my minidisc player just keeps on working, plus the removable media can't be scratched unlike cds. Only the shutter can be damaged..if your a klutz and try hard to.
