Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

A lot of cable, connectivity is confusing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I have this App radio and an iPhone 5s, so in order to Run the app mode I need the proper cables to connect. This kit contains everything you could possibly need, however, the instructions that came with the kit are misleading. In order to do the app mode I really only needed the HDMI cable and the adapter to go from HDMI to the Apple lightning connector. The instructions show both the HDMI and USB hooked up at the same time, BUT, my app radio does not recognize my phone when connected through the HDMI/Lightning adapter, that connection only works when you plug the USB sync cord directly in to the phone/radio without going through any adapters. Oh by the way, the instructions that came with the radio are not much help either as they also show both cables connected at the same time. All in all a bit disappointing but at the end of the day it all works, well kinda. It's very possible that I'm just not understanding how this is supposed to work, but this is where clear directions and explanations would come in handy.

Pros: I can now use my App mode with apps like Mapquest that I have on my phone

Cons: Confusing/unclear instructions/directions Only really needed the HDMI cable and the Apple HDMI adapter instead of this expensive kit.
