Note: This model will not play PlayStation 2 games, but is backwards compatible with PS one games. This unit will also not playback SACDs. The PlayStation 3 is only a reader and will not write to discs. The PlayStation 3 supports both 12cm and 8cm discs.

120GB HDD: This Sony PlayStation 3 features a built-in 120GB HDD to save data from PlayStation format software. The Sony PS3 allows you to create internal memory cards on the unit's hard disk and assign virtual cards to the slots. It is recommended that you regularly back up data from the hard disc. You can back up data stored on the hard disk to a USB mass storage device or to a Sony Memory Stick or SD Memory via a USB card reader/writer using the unit's front-panel USB ports.

Note: This unit does not include Memory Stick, SD Memory Card, or Compact Flash card slots.

USB Ports: In addition the unit's built-in Blu-ray player, the Sony PS3 features two front-panel USB type-A ports and comes supplied with a 57" USB type-A to type-B cable. You can connect external devices, such as devices that are compatible with USB Mass Storage Class, to the PS3.

Video Output: The Sony PS3 system offers composite, component, and S-Video output via a proprietary multi-pin connector and also offers and HDMI output. 1080p Output: Through the HDMI output, Sony PS3 has a 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixel) output option, at either the 60 Hz video or 24 Hz film frame rates.

Upscaler: Upscaling is a technique that can be used to enable video content recorded in SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of PlayStation 1 format software and DVD is recorded in SD resolution, the content can be upscaled. Higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling this upscaled output. To use this feature, your TV must support high definition connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3 system must be set to output video at 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.

Cross Color Reduction Filter: This function reduces color noise when the system is connected using an AV cable (composite) or S VIDEO cable (sold separately).

Audio Output: The Sony PS3 features a 2-channel analog connection via a proprietary multi-pin connector and its supplied audio/video cable. The unit also features an optical digital output and an HDMI output for connection to a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver. The Sony PS3 supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, and 7.1ch LPCM. The PS3 can output up to 5.1 channels through its optical digital output and 7.1 channels through its HDMI output (a device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 channel is required to output 7.1 channel audio from the HDMI Out connector).

DualShock Wireless Controller: The Sony PS3 bundle comes supplied with two DualShock wireless Bluetooth enabled controller. The DualShock wireless controller allows you to control the PS3 wirelessly. The DualShock wireless controller also features a vibration function that is activated during gaming action. The unit can support up to 7 wireless controllers. The Bluetooth enabled wireless controller will need to be paired to the Sony PS3 by connecting the controller to the PS3 via the supplied USB cable temporarily. Once the controller is paired, the USB cable can be disconnected. The supplied USB cable is also used to charge the controller. 

On-Screen Keyboard: The Sony PS3 features an on-screen keyboard which allows you to enter text data into the game system. The unit features a predictive mode, which allow you to enter the first few letters of the word, which will bring up a list of commonly used words that start with these letters. You can the use the directional buttons to select the word that you want. You can also enter characters into the PS3 using a commercially available USB keyboard or Bluetooth enabled keyboard (sold separately).

Note: You cannot use predictive mode when using an external keyboard.

Parental Control Level: The PS3 system includes a parental control feature. You can use this feature to set a password and limit the playback of content restricted by a parental control level (games, videos, and other content). By setting the parental control level on the system, you can prevent the payback of restricted content by children. The Sony PS3 offers 11 parental control levels protected by a user-customized 4 digit password.

Note: This system is recommended for ages 6 and older.

Future System Updates: Using the unit's Ethernet port and your network's Internet connection, data saved on a USB flash drive, or data contained on a compatible disc you can install future system upgrades to the PS3. By updating the PS3 system software, you can add features and/or security patches. The Sony PS3 should frequency be updated to use the latest version of the available system software. Screen Saver: You can set the period of time before the screensaver is automatically started when the system is idle (5, 10, 20, or 30 minutes).

Power Saving: To save power, the PS3 system and wireless controllers can be set to turn off automatically after a certain period of inactivity (1, 2, 3, or 5 hours).

Mounting: The Sony PS3 can be placed horizontally or vertically on a shelf.

Gaming Features

Video Game Formats: The PlayStation 3 (120GB) supports playback of PlayStation 3 BD-ROM  and PlayStation 1 CD-ROM video games.

Note: This unit is not compatible with PlayStation 2 video games.

PlayStation Store: You can play games that you download (as a purchase or for free) onto the PS3's 120GB HDD from the online Sony PlayStation Store.

Saving Data: PlayStation data that was saved to the hard disk can be exported to connected storage media, while saved PlayStation data that has been exported can be imported to the unit's hard disk.

Game Smoothing: You can use this feature to reduce the roughness of the displayed image from a PlayStation 1 video game.

Trophy Collection: You can earn trophies when you accomplish certain objectives in games that support the trophy feature. Trophies are categorized into four grades (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum). In general, grades are based on the level of difficulty in earning the trophies. The types of trophies available and the conditions by which you can earn trophies vary depending on the game.

DivX VOD: DivX VOD is a video delivery service that lets you rent or purchase video content recorded in DivX format. To play video files that are compatible with the DivX VOD service, the PS3T system needs to be registered as a DivX player. Screen Modes: The Sony PS3 features 4 Screen Modes to choose from.

  • Normal: Set to display the video to fit the screen size without changing proportions.
  • Zoom: Set to display the video at the full screen size without changing proportions. Portions of the video at the top and bottom or left and right are cut off.
  • Full Screen: Set to display the content on the entire screen by changing proportions and stretching the image vertically and horizontally.
  • Original: Set to display the video in its original size.

Picture Controls: The Sony PlayStation 3 features the following picture adjustments.

  • DVD Wide Display: You can set the size of the on-screen image for DVDs when using a 4:3 aspect ratio television. You can choose from Pan and Scan (displays the image to fill the TV screen by cutting off portions at the top and bottom or left and right sides of the image) or Letterbox (displays the image in its original proportions with black margins at the top and bottom of the image).
  • BD/DVD Conversion: This function of the Sony PS3 detects the difference between video, film and animation material automatically and to select the best conversion mode for each material.
  • Mosquito Noise Reduction: Reduces mosquito noise that appears on the edges of visual images.
  • Frame Noise Reduction: Reduces fine noise in video image.
  • Block Noise Reduction: Reduces mosaic-like block noise displayed on the screen.
  • Angle Options: Select one of the available viewing angles for content recorded with multiple angles.

Playback Controls: The Sony PS3 offers the following movie playback controls.

  • Scene Search: Use this feature to view thumbnails that are created at certain time intervals. Select a thumbnail to start playing the video from that particular scene.
  • Go To: Allows you to start playback from a specified chapter or time.
  • Play/Pause/Stop: Start playback of content, temporarily pause playback, and stop playback.
  • Previous/Next: Go to the previous or next chapter.
  • Fast Forward/Reverse: Fast reverse or fast forward the content being played. Each time you press the Fast Forward/Reverse button the playback rate changes.
  • Instant Replay/Advance: Move to a place in the video 15 seconds back or 15 seconds forward.
  • Slow Back/Forward: Play in slow mode.
  • Frame Advance/Reverse: Play one frame at a time.
  • Repeat: Play content repeatedly.
  • A-B Repeat: Play a specified section of content repeatedly.

Audio Controls: The PS3 offers the following audio controls for video playback.

  • Audio Options: Select one of the available audio options for content recorded with multiple audio tracks.
  • Subtitle Style: Select one of the available viewing options for content recorded with multiple subtitle styles.
  • Volume Control: Adjust the volume output level of content played from one of nine levels.
  • BD/DVD Dynamic Range Control: You can use this feature for late night viewing when watching a Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Digital TrueHD movie. Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of sound that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highest level of sound before distortion occurs. Dynamic range compression means reducing the gap between the loudest and softest sounds so you can listen at low volumes but still hear dialogue clearly.

Photo Features

Compatible Still Image Formats: The Sony PS3 supports the playback of the following still image formats (JPEG (DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21 compliant), TIFF, BMP, GIF, PNG) via its built-in HDD, a connected DLNA Media Server, Data Discs (CD-R/DVD-R), USB Mass Storage Devices, and connected Digital camera. The unit also supports still image playback from Memory Stick, SD Card, and Compact Flash Card using a USB/Memory card reader.

Coping Still Images: You are able to import image files saved on storage media to the PS3's hard disk or copy imported files to storage media.

Photo Playback Controls: The Sony PlayStation 3 offers the following still image playback functions.

  • Display Mode: You can change the size of the image displayed on the screen from Normal (display the image to fit the screen size without changing proportions) or Zoom (display the image at the full screen size without changing proportions. Portions of the image at the top and bottom or left and right are cut off).
  • Change Effect: You can change the method of switching images from Normal (replace the currently displayed image with the next image), Slide (replace the currently displayed image with the next image in a slideshow format), or Fade (use the fade effect to switch to the next image).
  • Trimming: You can delete unnecessary parts at the top, bottom, left, or right side of an image. Use the left and right sticks of the wireless controller to select the area you want to keep. Trimmed images are saved using different file names (only images that are stored on the PS3 system's hard disk can be trimmed).
  • Wallpaper: You can set the image that is displayed on the screen as wallpaper.
  • Zoom: You can zoom in or out to enlarge or reduce an image. Once you have zoomed an image you can pan through the image.
  • Rotate: You are able to rotate an image 90 degrees to the left or to the right.
  • Slideshow: During a Slideshow, each image is automatically displayed in order. You can select one of five slideshow display patterns and three slideshow speeds. You can also play a slideshow and music at the same time.
  • Playlists: You can collect  images you like from among the images saved on the PS3's hard disk and rearrange them in the order you like to create and play playlists.

Printer Compatible: The Sony PlayStation 3 can be connected to a USB compatible printer to print still images displayed on the Sony PS3.

Music Features

Compatible Discs: The Sony PS3 support audio playback of CDs (CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW) up to 24x maximum read rate.

Note: The Sony PlayStation 3 is not compatible with SACDs.

Music File Controls: The PlayStation 3 offers the following controls for music file playback.

  • Volume Control: Adjust the volume output level of content played from one of nine levels.
  • Visual Player: Select one of multiple backgrounds to be displayed during content playback.
  • Display: View status and other information during playback. Information items vary depending on the content being played.
  • Play/Pause/Stop: Start playback of content, temporarily pause playback, and stop playback.
  • Previous/Next: Go back to the beginning of the current or previous track or go to the beginning of the next track.
  • Fast Forward/Reverse: Fast forward or fast reverse the content being played.
  • Repeat: Play content repeatedly. You can select one of three repeat modes (play one content item repeatedly, play all content repeatedly, or clear repeat play and play all content in order).
  • Shuffle: Play content in a random order.

Playlists: You can collect tracks you like from among the tracks saved on your hard disk and rearrange them in the order you like to create and play playlists.

Audio CD Information: When you insert an audio CD, the PS3 system automatically connects to the Internet (if applicable) and obtains CD information. You can edit the CD information that was obtained.

Network Features

Internet Connection: You can connect the Sony PS3 to the Internet for online gaming and Internet browsing via the unit's rear-panel Ethernet port (10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/100BASE-T) and optional Ethernet cable (sold separately) or using its built-in 2.4 GHz wireless networking feature (IEEE 802.11 b/g). Once connected and setup, the PS3 system will automatically connect to the Internet when the system is turned on. While the PS3 is connected to the Internet you can create your own PlayStation Network account. By creating a PlayStation Network account, you can enjoy chatting online with friends or download games and video from the online PlayStation Store. The following items are required for a wired connection to the Internet.

  • A broadband Internet connection via a device such as a DSL or cable modem (connection of multiple devices may require additional hardware)
  • Router, access point or wireless router
  • A commercially available Ethernet cable

Note: Dial-up Internet connectivity is not supported.

Internet Browsing: When connected to your home network via a hardwired Ethernet connection or wireless Wi-Fi connection, you can use the Sony PS3 to browse the internet. An on-screen keyboard will be displayed so that you can enter an address (URL). You can also perform an Internet searches from the unit's XMB menu screen using a keyword or phrase. You can even open multiple windows at the same time. The PS3 offers to Internet View modes - Browse Mode (the window is displayed over the entire height and width of the screen) and Window Mode (the display changes to accommodate the number of opened windows). ThePS3's Internet Browser offers the following unique features.

  • Display Size: Web pages may be displayed too small or too big depending on the combination of the video output setting of the PS3 system and the TV that is connected. If this is the case, you can use the following method to adjust the display size.
  • Image Zoom: Automatically enlarge the area on the screen where the pointer is located to optimal size. The optimum enlargement ratio is automatically calculated for the area where the pointer is located.
  • Text Zoom: The system calculates the enlargement ratio based on the size of the paragraph of the text in the area where the pointer is located and then displays the text in zoom mode.
  • Resolution: Change the screen resolution of a Web page. You can adjust the Web page display to an easy-to-view size to match the video output resolution of the PS3 system.

Uploading and Downloading Content: You are able to upload content saved on the hard disk or storage media to the Internet or download content from the Internet to the hard disk or storage media.

Information Board: The information board is always displayed on the unit's XMB menu screen and displays the latest news about games or the latest information about PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Store: PlayStation Store is an online shop within PlayStation Network where you can download  (as a purchase or for free) products such as games, additional items for games, or video content.

Friends Category: You are able to send or receive messages or do voice/video chat with other PS3 users over Sony's PlayStation Network. You will need to create (sign up for) a PlayStation Network account to use these features. You can do voice/video chat with people on your Friends list. To do voice chat, you will need an audio input /output device (such as a headset, sold separately). To chat with video, you will also need a USB camera (sold separately).

Life With PlayStation: Life with PlayStation provides dynamic web-based content organized into unique channels that can be browsed by time and location. You can enjoy various types of content by selecting a channel.

Remote Play: Remote Play is a feature that enables the PS3 system screen to be displayed on a PSP system and allows you to operate remotely over a wireless LAN. To use this feature, you must update your PSP system software to version 3.72 or later. When you are using Life with PlayStation, you will automatically be participating in the Folding@home project, a distributed computing project that is run by Stanford University.

BD-Live: BD-Live technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more from a broadband internet and home network connections (fees may apply). The Sony PS3 features an Ethernet port to connect to your home network and features a USB type-A port, as well as its built-in 120GB HDD to download these bonus features.

Overview: The two Sony DualShock 3 wireless controllers for the PlayStation3 system provide an intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive Sixaxis motion sensing technology. Each hit, crash and explosion from your PlayStation 3 video game is more realistic because you can feel the rumble right in the palm of your hand from the DualShock 3 controller. It can even detect natural movements for real-time and high precision interactive play, acting as a natural extension of your body. The DualShock 3 utilizes Bluetooth technology for wireless game play and the controller's mini-USB type-B port allows you to seamlessly and automatically charge the controller through the PlayStation 3 at anytime (USB cable supplied with PlayStation 3).

Bluetooth Wireless Remote Control

Overview: The Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray Disc Remote Control allows you to take command of your Sony PlayStation 3 system's built-in Blu-ray Disc player without leaving your seat. You can access your PlayStation's Blu-ray Disc player's wide variety of features using the Blu-Ray Disc Remote Control. In addition to Blu-ray operation, the BD remote will also control DVD playback, videos saved on your PS3's hard disk drive, and audio CDs. Instead of using infrared like most standard remotes, this remote control uses Bluetooth (2.4GHz) technology so you do not have to point it directly at your PS3 system.

Pairing:  Before using the BD remote control, you must register (pair) the remote control with your PS3 system. This operation is performed only once when you are using the remote control for the first time. Only one BD remote control can be registered with a single PS3 system.

Power Supply: The Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray Disc Remote Control operates off of two "AA" batteries (supplied).

HDMI Cable

Overview: This Monster GameLink cable is made for use with the Sony PlayStation3 game console. It has standard HDMI connectors on both ends. The cable allows you to deliver uncompressed high-definition video (720p, 1080i, and 1080p) and multi-channel audio for Dolby Digital and DTS Surround sound from your PS3 game console to your HDTV or home theater.

Note: The PS3 console also comes with composite stereo and stereo RCA audio plugs.

Up to 1080p Graphics: The PS3 console is capable of up to 1080p video output, however, you cannot enjoy the high-definition video and multi-channel digital audio with the cables that come in the box. The Monster GameLink HDMI cable enables you to get the best video and audio the PS3 has to offer.
