Our take on the Tamron 200-500mm Di Telephoto Zoom Lens

Tamron 6 Year Limited Warranty

Let Tamron's 200-500mm Di lens bring your faraway subjects up close for dramatic, long-range telephoto images. It boasts an impressive 310mm to 760mm zoom range when mounted to an APS-C sensor digital SLR, and can be used with conventional 35mm autofocus SLR film cams, as well. This ultra-telephoto zoom lens belongs to Tamron's Super Performance series, so you can count on crisp, professional-looking photographs and rugged, reliable construction.

Photo enthusiasts will appreciate the versatility this zoom lens offers. Constructed of 13 elements in 10 groups, the 200-500mm Di is compact and lightweight for portability. A quick-release, magnesium alloy tripod mount keeps your cam and lens combo securely attached to a tripod for stability, but detaches easily for convenient hand-held shooting. Tamron also includes a removable rotating filter mount that gives you precise effects control when using a polarizing filter. The supplied lens hood allows better shooting in bright light.

Features

Overview: The Tamron SP AF 200-500mm F/5.0-6.3  Di LD Aspherical (IF) Model number A08E is an accessory lens designed for use with Konica Minolta film and Sony digital SLR cameras. It has the standard Minolta and Sony SAL-mount.

Di: Tamron Di (Digitally integrated) lenses are designed to fit 35mm film cameras and digital SLR cameras with full size and APS-C size image sensors.

Zoom: When used on a digital SLR camera body with an APS-C size image sensor, the zoom yields approximately the 35mm equivalent of a 310-760mm zoom range.

Optical Features: This lens has the following optical features:

  • Super Performance (SP): Tamron's Super Performance (SP) series lens features high design specification for high performance. The SP lens features impressive and innovative designs free from cost restraints.
  • Low Dispersion Glass (LD): Low Dispersion (LD) glass elements reduce the effect of chromatic aberration, a form of optical noise, and increases image sharpness
  • Internal Focusing (IF): Tamron's Internal Focusing System enhances lens maneuverability and reduces the Minimum Focus Distance (MFD) throughout its entire focal length
  • Optical System (OS): The lens features an optical system balanced at a remarkably high level to allow high resolution while achieving high contrast even in the low frequency range which provides outstanding images that are uniform and sharp over the entire image field.

Lightweight Design: This powerful telephoto zoom lens weighs a mere 43.6 ounces through the use of engineering plastic materials for parts that compose the main barrel which provide strength sufficient for industrial applications and offer dimensional stability.

Focus Modes: The lens can be used in either Automatic or Manual Focus modes. When you switch the camera to manual focus, you can focus on your subject by rotating the focus ring on the lens.

Manual Zoom: You can manually zoom in or out by rotating the zooming ring of the lens while viewing your subject through the camera's viewfinder and compose your image at the chosen focal length.

Zoom Lock: This lens is equipped with a zoom lock switch to fix the lens in the widest position (shortest barrel length). This prevents the lens barrel from extending while the camera is hanging around your neck. It can also prevent the lens from changing focal length during a long exposure when the camera is at a severe angle.

Lens Hood: A bayonet-type lens hood is provided with the lens. The lens hood prevents stray light from entering the lens, which can be harmful to the picture. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and stored on the lens. The lens hood adds approximately 5.875" length to the lens.

Note: Using the camera's built-in flash with the lens hood in place can cause shadows to appear on the image.

Filter Effect Control: The Filter Effect Control adapter is designed to attach and rotate an optional filter on the lens while still using the lens's supplied hood. This  enables you to perform simultaneously adjustments to an attached filter such as a Polarization filter and the supplied hood. You can confirm the polarizing effect through the viewfinder of your camera, all while using the hood to prevent harmful light from entering the lens.

Tripod Mount: The Tamron lens features an adjustable tripod mount that is detachable in one touch and is made of magnesium alloy which is light-weight yet high durable, resulting in enhanced balance and ease of use in hand-held shooting. The tripod mount allows you to adjust the vertical and horizontal position of your camera when the lens is attached to your camera and connected to a tripod.

Carrying Bag: The lens comes with its own soft nylon, zippered carrying case that features a removable and adjustable nylon shoulder strap.

Tam ron 200-500

Written By Rob, San Diego on Saturday, September 11, 2010

This is a lot of lens for the money. Great from 200 to about 450mm, after that it is a little soft, but still very acceptable. Best used on a tripod, but can be handheld with sufficient daylight. Hunts a bit depending on your equipment. Hunts a lot with my D70S, but very quick with my D90.
Huge lens hood and nice padded carrying case. This lens is a keeper.
