Help your subwoofer sound its best

AudioQuest Black Lab

AudioQuest's Black Lab cable delivers all the deep bass goodness your powered subwoofer is capable of. This cable features two identical conductors, and each conductor is a single, unbroken strand of AudioQuest's high-purity Long-Grain Copper. Solid conductors eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can make multi-strand conductor cables sound brittle.

High-quality connectors eliminate the weakest link

Black Lab features RCA connectors made of gold-plated copper. The connectors are fastened by cold welding — a solder-less process that uses high pressure and silver paste to minimize signal loss. By contrast, solder tends to impede the signal, and heating the copper conductor can negatively affect its performance.

Product Highlights:

  • two solid Long-Grain Copper conductors eliminate "strand-interaction" distortion
  • air-filled foamed-polyethylene insulation minimizes energy storage and its associated distortion
  • 100% coverage metal shield with AQ's Noise Dissipation System to resist RFI interference
  • cold-welded gold-plated RCA connectors for reliability and resistance to corrosion
  • built-in ground wire with spade lugs to prevent hum
  • smooth PVC jacket
  • warranty: 5 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The old. Onkyo Receiver, Bose 6.1 system that's 10 years old, still sounded good and was working well, buy It was out of date. No bluetooth, wifi, usb, etc... In with the New! Yamaha Aventage RX-A840 purchased from a different online retailer. Everything else is from Crutchfield. Cables are AudioQuest Pearl & Cinnamon HDMI. Speaker cables are AudioQuest Type 4 & Rocket 33 for speakers & Black Lab for Sub. SVS SB-1000 Sub (Scratch & Dent) Focal Chorus 705 Bookshelf Speakers & Focal Chorus 716 Floor Speakers. Center Channel Klipsch RP-440C. And all housed in a Rosewood 7ft x 9ft entertainment center with a 3 yr old LED Samsung 50 in TV.

I probably spent $3K 10 yrs ago and I did not use AudioQuest cables. The old system was nice, but my ears have matured away from Bose since upgrading my car system to Focal, listening to Hi-Res music files with a DAC, and having high end Headphones and Earbuds. I understand there are much nicer systems for a lot more money. But, for the money, I am a very happy customer. I would have loved to use a Focal Center, but I needed a center that could hold my TV, and Klipsch had one.

The sound is amazingly Smooth, balanced, and powerful! Everything blends well despite being a front facing 5.1 system. I get Great separation on movies, music, and TV programs. Yamaha does an excellent job of processing and I don't miss having speakers behind or beside me. Very clean Highs, Mids & Lows singing in perfect harmony...

Pros: Build Quality! Sound! Warranty!

Does what a 15 dollar cable does

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Crutchfield advisor added this cable to my order when we specced out a system. I needed an LFE cable, but this much for this thing??? I was surprised when I saw the price in the order confirmation. I'm alright with buying heavier gauge copper wires for high end speakers and whatnot, to an extent. I have 20 year old monster cable that still works great. But here I think you get about 20 dollars worth of actual value and 30 dollars hype out of these. It's an LFE cable, how fancy must it be?

Pros: Nice looking

Cons: expensiiiiive, can't really tell it makes a signal difference.

I needed a subwoofer wire and this is what was recommended by advisor and they work great

Cons: The only downside is I wish they would make this in a shorter wire the sub woofer is right beside the wall and it would be nice to have a short subwoofer wire

Go Bye-Bye Hum

Written by: BUBS from Charlottesville, VA on June 23, 2014

A few months ago I purchased a powered sub-woofer (from Crutchfield). After hooking up to an old sub-woofer cable which ran ~ 35 feet under my living room, I noticed a hum in certain locations of the room. With the advice of my Crutchfield salesperson, I began adjusting the amount of gain and low pass frequency on the new sub-woofer. This seemed to work on and off for a few days. However, since this humming annoyance continued to repeat itself, my salesperson had me examine the old cable and I noticed the end from the receiver differed from the end going to the sub-woofer. This wiring had been installed by someone else and there was a short extension cable at both ends of the sub-woofer cable to meet the distance required! So my salesperson had just the answer with this 39.4 foot Audio Quest Black Lab cable. Since then I have thoroughly enjoyed great bass and freedom from hum! ZILCH! I also think the price for this lengthy cable was very reasonable and I might add even better with some reward points!

Pros: Not bulky or "stiff" so easy to thread through a small hole to run beneath a floor and be out of view. Allows for a clean and "healthy" bass sound with no hum or interference.

Cons: None to date.

Product Research

Features

Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) Conductors: Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion. Black Lab's solid Long-Grain Copper allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. OFHC is a general metal industry specification regarding "loss" without any concern for distortion. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and definitively better performance.

Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation: Black Lab uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS): AudioQuest's Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

Symmetrical Coax Geometry: Identical positive (+) and negative (-) conductors prevent the shield being used as an inferior audio conductor.

Cold-Welded Gold-Plated Plugs: This plug design allows for a connection without the use of solder, which is a common source of distortion. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability.

Grounding: If you hear noticeable hum in your system after connecting your subwoofer, please attach the subwoofer cable's ground leads to your audio gear. Some audio equipment have a ground (GND) connection on the back-panel, if not, attach the ground spade lugs to any screw on the equipment chassis of both the source and the subwoofer. Usually, this wire will not need to be connected.

2 questions already asked

Yes you can run this in your wall .I have mine running under the sub floor and carpet no problems. The sound quality from the Infiniti sub is excellent [ MICHAEL  Jul 02, 2015 ]
The cable is perfectly acceptable, but the problem will be snaking the thick cable through the walls. So unless you are addressing new construction or a substantive remodeling job, you might want to consider cable raceways or channels. [ GARRETT  Jul 01, 2015 ]
Hi Aaron, Yes it is. Unfortunately I had mine go bad but they come with a five year warranty. So I sent it back to audio quest and they sent me another. I have two but of course the one that went bad was the one in the wall. I hope this helps. Don. [ DONALD  Jun 30, 2015 ]
Yes it is. I pre-wired my house with two of these for my theater. Just remember not to run the wire parallel with the electrical in your home. [ Christopher  Jun 30, 2015 ]
I used it in the wall and it seems to work just fine. [ Steve  Jun 30, 2015 ]
I Put it inside my wall and haven't had any problems with it. [ Steven  Jun 30, 2015 ]
Sorry for the delayed respond. I'm guessing you. I would think the connections are the same. I only use it for my sub but it works like any other audio cable. [ Chase A.  Jan 06, 2016 ]
No for a powered sub not for center [ TIMOTHY M  Jan 04, 2016 ]
Yes. I use it for my center speaker. [ Lee M.  Jan 04, 2016 ]
