AudioQuest bases its cable designs on real-world testing — lots of experimenting, listening, and tweaking. With its Golden Gate cables, AudioQuest has hit a "sweet spot" that puts high-end performance within the price range of many music lovers. These cables bring together some of AQ's most advanced designs and materials, for excellent sound quality from a cable that's relatively thin and lightweight.

Solid Perfect Surface Copper (PSC) conductors

One of the most important materials that goes into an audio cable is the metal used for its conductors — the parts of the cable that actually carry the signal. The Golden Gate's conductors are made from a material called "Perfect-Surface Copper." It's a breakthrough cable technology that can translate into a not-so-subtle improvement sound quality, compared to lesser conductor materials. The conductor's solid (rather than stranded) metal composition and astonishingly smooth surface allow for optimal signal transfer with a minimum of distortion.

Advanced cable geometry

While many cables use a single path for both the ground and shield, AudioQuest uses a design they call "double-balanced asymmetrical geometry." This design separates the ground and shield paths for clean, quiet performance.

Cold-welded, gold-plated connectors

All the details of the cable's construction are well thought-out. For instance, the Golden Gate's connectors are cold-welded, rather than soldered, which eliminates a common source of distortion found in many other audio cables.

This cable is equipped with a stereo mini (3.5mm) connector at one end and dual RCAs at the other. Stereo RCA and mini-to-mini versions are also available.

Product Highlights:

  • length: 2 meters/6.6 feet
  • stereo cable with a male miniplug (3.5mm) connector at one end, and dual RCA connectors at the other
  • solid Perfect Surface Copper (PSC) conductors for excellent performance

Features

Golden Gate Series Stereo Audio Minijack-to-RCA Cable: The AudioQuest Golden Gate stereo audio minijack-to-RCA cable is terminated by a gold-plated male 3.5mm stereo connector on one end and a pair of gold-plated stereo RCA male connectors on other end. The AudioQuest Golden Gate stereo audio minijack-to-RCA cable is available in the following lengths.

  • 0.6 meter (2')
  • 1 meter (3' 4")
  • 2 meter (6' 7")
  • 3 meter (10')
  • 5 meter (16' 5")
  • 8 meter (26' 3")

Solid Perfect-Surface Copper Conductors (PSC): Perfect-Surface Copper has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal-processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low-distortion conductor. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Golden Gate's very clean sound.

Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Golden Gate uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy; preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

Double-Balanced Asymmetrical Geometry: Purposely designed for single-ended applications, Double-Balanced Asymmetrical Geometry offers a relatively lower impedance on the ground for a richer, and more dynamic experience. While many single-ended cable designs use a single path for both the ground and the shield, Double-Balanced designs separate the two for cleaner, quieter performance.

Cold-Welded, Gold-Plated Plugs: This plug design allows for a connection devoid of solder, which is a common source of distortion. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion.

Excellent product, but stiff and springy

Written By Ray Garrison, New Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using a Geek Out DAC with my laptop to play mostly hirez files. Needed a miniRCA to RCA cable at least 12 feet long to reach from couch to amp (Cambridge Audio Azur 640A V2). I had been using a basic well made cable from another cable manufacturer, but I have a lot of electronics in the room, I'm using Klipschorn speakers, and I was picking up some noise between the laptop and the amp. The AudioQuest shielding totally fixed that problem. Sound quality wise I can't really compare, because the elimination of the noise made such a big improvement any other changes are swamped. Construction is top notch, connectors fit my equipment tightly without latching on with a death grip that makes me afraid I'm gonna pull the female RCA's out of the amp if I remove the cable. Mini jack fits my Geek Out, DragonFly, and DroidUltra sockets perfectly. You should be aware that between the shielding, jacket and the type of copper used in the conductors, this cable is much stiffer that a typical generic cable, and has some degree of "springy-ness" to it. This is not a problem for me, but if you plug in an iPod and set it on the table, the cable might wind up dragging your iPod around as it tries to coil itself back up. I didn't downgrade the 5 Star rating for that, as it doesn't make any difference at all for me using my laptop / amp setup. If you have any of the new generation USB DACs and you're looking for a cable to connect it to your main system, this one is excellent.

Pros: Excellent shielding totally eliminated noise / interference issues I had Very well made Connectors fit tightly but not too tightly

Cons: Connect it to a small, light device and the tail will wag the dog Might be tricky to connect stand RCA male connectors to your system if the RCA jacks are in a recessed panel or have limited space (Neither of these are any issue for me, so gave it full 5 Stars)

Good sound bad connection

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A good cable for sound, too bad it had a terrible connection. The 3.5mm end was wiggly in the iPod and whenever the iPod or cable was moved the connection would break and the iPod would pause. Just like it would if the cable was pulled from the iPod. Any other cable I owned would hold a perfect connection. Maybe it was just a 3.4!! ;)

NICE!

Worthy upgrade for desktop and mid fi setups

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently entered the digital music side of the audio hobby; my main system consists of a Citation I tube preamp, McIntosh MC275 power amp, Bozak B302 speakers OR Magnepan MMG-I's. My main source is a Rotel 1072 CD player. My mid fi system is a Macbook Pro using an Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 DAC, connected to a Fisher X100B tube integrated amp that has been fully restored. Speakers used were Infinity Crescendo CS 3006s.

I used 24/96 versions of Tom Petty's Live Anthology: "It's Good to be King"; Santana's "Evil Ways", Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", and, "Wearing the Inside Out", and also The Eagles, "Hotel California" as sample tracks.

This was not a double-blind test... I knew which set of cables I was using. I alternated between my original Monster Cables, the Audioquest Evergreen, and the Audioquest Golden Gate. The Evergreen is a worthy upgrade in it's own right. Quality construction and improved sound for around $30 some dollars (2 meter version). The step up to the Golden Gates was noticeable. Bass was stronger, cymbals more lifelike, the sound stage a bit more forward. I found this true with both of my systems but the improvement was most noticeable with my mid fi/PC system. I might have to try the Big Sur cable next, but I am keeping the Golden Gates for now. They've really improved the sound coming from the Dragonfly DAC.

Pros: Better highs, more sold bass, improved transients. Overall improved sound quality and imaging.

Cons: None at this price point. It's an all around winner.

This cable rocks!1 Hooked up to the AudioQuest DragonFly DAC to the stereo, sound is incredible. Much more open soundstage, better highs, bass is tighter and deeper, and a lot quieter. Highly recommended!

Pros: sound great, easy to hook up, well made

Cons: Expensive , but well worth it, and a very good value if the stereo system is up to it

Yes. These cables work excellent. I'd recommend if you're looking for a high end connection from your iPhone or iPod to computer or stereo. Only issue I've found is I have to remove the iPhone cover for it to plug in correctly. Otherwise I'm very happy with the purchase. [ SEAN  Oct 29, 2014 ]

Yes. Keep in mind their return policy - if for some reason it doesn't work you can return it. Some iPhone cases might make it hard to fully insert the plug, for example. It's a GREAT cable, very well made and well shielded. [ Raymond  Oct 29, 2014 ]
