Solid conductors improve accuracy and clarity

Type 4 cables feature four solid, long-grain copper conductors to ensure highly efficient signal transfer with minimal loss. Solid conductors eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound with multi-strand conductor cables.

Precise cable geometry

These AudioQuest cables use two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge conductors. This difference in diameter reduces the possibility of distortion caused by any particular conductor's sonic "signature." A specialized spiral arrangement of the four conductors minimizes potential signal interaction, resulting in sound that's clearer and more dynamic.

Product Research

Features

Solid Conductors: All of the AudioQuest, CinemaQuest Type 4 speaker cable conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the single greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat harsh and distorted sound. Solid conductors enable the Type 4 cables to produce very clear sound.

Long-Grain Copper: The Type 4 cable's LGC (Long-Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and provides overall better performance.

4-Cross Geometry: The relationship between conductors defines a cable's most basic electrical values (capacitance and inductance). However, even when those variables are kept in a reasonable balance, the relationship between conductors can be varied in ways that greatly effect the sound. The spiral construction of Type 4 cable allows for significantly better dynamic contrast and information intelligibility than if the same conductors were run in parallel. The specific 4-cross geometry used in Type 4 cables maximizes this advantage.

Insulation: Since the Type 4 cables use solid conductors it doesn't require hard insulation and can take advantage of the vibration damping advantage of a softer insulation.

SST (Spread Spectrum Technology: SST (Spread Spectrum Technology) is a method for significantly reducing distortion flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors.

Terminations: The Type 4 cable utilizes high quality BFA/Banana connectors that allow the Type 4 cables to be securely attached to your speakers and amplifier. The BFA/Banana connectors are a dull looking silver because its metal is plated directly over the connector itself. There is no shiny and harsh sounding nickel layer underneath to distort your audio signal.

Customer Q&A

6 questions already asked

Q
How many watts can I push through these speaker cables? Do they support 8, 4, and 2ohm loads at high power? Why aren't shorter lengths available at Crutchfield when AudioQuest makes them?

A
Sorry to say I don't know the answers to your questions. You'll undoubtedly find someone online who knows more about such things.

Q
Since type 4 cables are braded and looks thick, How would I run these about 30' to my surround speakers. Would like to use same type of cable for center channel and surrounds. Would this be a bad choice for my application? Richard

This cables are not very thick great for main front and center. I will only recommend them for surrounds if the speakers are not too far apart but in your situation, I will use AudioQuest in-wall cables. That's what I have for my surrounds and front high and it works perfect.

Dear Richard, I imagine that the Crutchfield folks would be more qualified to give you specific advice than I am. I can tell you that these cables appear to be very high quality, and are performing perfectly in my system. Conventional wisdom would suggest that you should use the same cable type and gauge across connections when possible. Hope this helps?

Q
Is this wire rated as a class 2 or better?

Sorry, can't answer your question directly, but will say it's both a beautiful and functional speaker cable. Looks and sounds great and I believe it helped eliminate a slight humming issue I had when I initially set up my A/V system. Plus it looks as if it will last many years; built well. Enjoy.

I confirmed with Audioquest and they do make a in wall type 4 class 3 speaker wire.

made a big diff. in my two channel system over reg. 12 gauge wire . system is parasound p5 and a21 preamp and amp.speakers are focal 836w towers. mostly running lossless i tunes and cds on nad 565 . the type 4 cables made a noticeable diff. in high end and mid bass in my speakers . also using AQ cinnamon rca usb and fiber optic cables for about two years now. all seem to work with no issues.

Jose Z: I am not sure about that. You should probably ask AudioQuest,

I do not know what Class it is rated but I can vouch for the fact that they send 100% of the notes from my Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10 amp to the PSB Image B4 shelf speakers & produce a sound like a system costing 10x as much.

Q
When it says 10 ft pair that means given 2 speakers I could have each 5 ft equally spaced from the amplifier correct?
randy  Jan 08, 2014

A
You could actually have each of the speakers up to almost 10 FT from the amplifier (each cable is 10 feet long) Two 10' lengths of speaker cable with a pair of BFA Banana connectors on each end

Q
Has anyone used Type 4 cables to run to back surround speakers, and if so how did they physically go about doing so since the cables are braded and thick and looks like they would not bend easily around corners? I' m asking because I would like to use the same type of cable for center channel as well as surround speakers.
richard  Apr 03, 2017

A
I use them for mains, but did have to route them to make 90 degree turns. They are pretty flexible.
jeffrey  Apr 05, 2017
A
They need about 3-4" to bend comfortably to a 90 degree angle. However, they can be bent in about half that space if necessary.
