About the Boyo VTL17ir

Alexander H.

For the darkest spaces

Boyo makes mounting simple by securing their VTL17ir backup camera onto a sturdy strap that stealthily attaches behind any license plate. Once you power the camera and run the included video cable to the screen in your dash, you'll gain a wide-angle view of what's behind you every time you throw your vehicle into reverse. Thanks to a stellar CMOS sensor and built-in IR lights, the VTL17ir delivers high-quality picture even when the night seems impenetrable. The camera offers selectable parking lines, and it'll also work as a front camera.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Features

Backup Camera: The Boyo VTL17IR is a universal backup camera that can be added to almost any vehicle with an aftermarket receiver that features an integrated video monitor and composite video camera input. The Boyo VTL17IR includes a backup camera with an integrated license plate mounting bracket, composite video cable, and power/ground harness.

Note: The Boyo VTL17IR is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

CMOS Image Sensor: The Boyo VTL17IR backup camera is equipped with a highly sensitive 1/4" color CMOS image sensor with a total resolution of 720 x 480 pixels.

Wide Viewing Angle: The VTL17IR backup camera offers a 170° (diagonal) wide viewing angle.

Infrared (IR): The VTL17IR utilizes infrared (IR) for better visibility at night.

Waterproof (IP67): The Boyo VTL17IR features a waterproof (IP67) housing to protect it from the elements.

Selectable Mirror/Non-Mirror Image: By default, the backup camera will display a "mirror" image. If using the camera as a front camera, cut the white loop of the cable that is attached to the camera to get a non-mirror image.

Parking Guidelines: The backup camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of your aftermarket display monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also three color-coded (green/yellow/red) horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot.

Note: If you do not need and want to remove the parking guidelines, then cut the blue loop of the cable that is attached to the camera.

Composite Video Output: The Boyo VTL17IR backup camera if fitted with a composite video connector (RCA) which makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash receiver with integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. The total length of the composite video cable is 25.2'.

License Plate Mount: The VTL17IR features an integrated mounting bracket that is designed to use your vehicle's existing license plate mounting equipment. The integrated bracket is designed to be mounted behind the license plate so that only the camera is visible. Once the camera and bracket are mounted, you can position the camera forward or angle it down. The mounting hole spacing of the license plate bracket is roughly 7" to 7.3125" apart.

Note: The Boyo VTL17IR is designed to work best on vehicles that have a license plate located at the center and above the rear bumper. If your vehicle has a plate location that is offset to the left side, right side or your plate is located under the bumper then the VTL17IR may not provide optimum performance.

Q
is the perspective of the distance between the camera to the car behind accurate? or do cars look like they are far behind you but are actually very close? do headlights at night glare very bright at night making it impossible to see the car behind my car? I've tried 2 cameras but always have this problem causing potential accident. this pretty much makes a backup camera useless
brandi  Oct 12, 2022

A
I never had an issue with glaring lights, or cars not seeming at the correct distance from me. I was very happy with the purchase ??
christine  Oct 12, 2022
A
With all camera's you will need to learn the difference with the image to your vehicle. Mine has backup sensors so I have learned how close I can really get before hitting something. Also this camera can be adjusted down or up to avoid the headlight problem from other cars. It may be your car just happens to be at a height that makes this a problem. This mounts at the top of your license plate area, so if your other camera's also mounted at that location it will be an issue.

Q
Can I use this camera to connect it to my 2016 Malibu Limited stock in-dash screen that comes standard with the vehicle?
danielle  Jan 25, 2022
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
How long is the supplied cable running from the camera to the dash? Looking to purchase for my crew cab long box F350 and concerned I won't have enough length?
jace  Oct 27, 2020
2 answers
A
Youll have plenty of length. I ran it along my Chevy 1500 crew cab and still had 10 feet left
corey  Nov 20, 2020
A
I had to buy an extension cable for the video. I supplied the 12vdc from the backup lights and used the chasis ground at the backup lamp. 10' video extension will do the trick. Additional advantage if you have to do engine work (lift the cab) you can just unplug the video. Mine is between the cab and box.

Yes, you can mount it in the front
jason  Apr 16, 2020
A
It shouldn't matter what plate location is used. There is plenty of wire to connect. However, you need to add one wire to a power source to activate like your reverse lights to activate the camera. You will also need to have a head unit with camera reature.
jordie  Apr 15, 2020
A
Yes. The wires have a loop to select front view or mirror image

Q
Can you install this to where you can both maunally look at the camera while youre driving, and so that it switches automatically when you put the car in reverse? My old camera had two wires (Power and video) and both had a red wire. I connected the red wire from the power to reverse light, and the red wire from the video to my accessory on the radio. And I was able to look at the camera any time while driving, and it would switch automatically when in reverse. This camera only has one red wire and one black wire?
thomas  Jun 22, 2019
2 answers
A
Yes, there is a white wire that can be connected to a switch to turn on and off.
ryan  Jun 29, 2019
A
i don't know because mine always works when I put it in reverse, but I never try to look at it going forward. I know the radio has a lot of options and if I remember correctly, it's the radio that activates the camera, not the rear lights. Sorry I could not be of more help, but I believe on this camera it's about when the radio sends a signal to operate.

More than likely it will not because there is no input on the factory head unit to receive video from the camera. Can you provide your vin so I can double check? (I work in the parts department for Toyota)

Q
I really want to get this camera, but...... I think it would sit up too high and get in the way of my lift gate button if mounted on the top. If I were to mount it on the bottom of the license plate and flip it upside down, would that work?? Or would I get an upside down picture??
jason  Dec 03, 2016
3 answers
A
I had the same situation. I mounted it at the bottom of the license plate, with the frame turned upside down. To avoid an inverted image, I just removed the nut and pivot screw, flipped the camera, and replaced the pivot screw and nut. Works perfectly! Incidentally, I had never used one of these before and was unsure about the red wire that came to the radio. It did not appear on the wiring diagram, so I called for advice. I was told that it was used for manually turning the camera on so the driver could look at a trailer hitch while driving. This is not the case. The red wire is a trigger to tell the radio to switch to the camera input; it must be connected to "Reverse" on the wiring harness. Hope this will save someone else some time and frustration. - Ken

I can't recommend this camera. It's fine in low light but does not do well adjusting for exposure during the day
jody  Dec 04, 2016
A
I have mine mounted on the top of the license plate and I have enough room to properly press the button. It is a little close and might be difficult with gloves but should not prevent use of the button. If you mount on the bottom of the plate and flip the camera you will have an upside down picture.

Q
After reading the instructions for the rear view camera, I gather that there are wires ( power, video) that need to run from the camera to up somewhere under the dash. Typically these wires could be run under the carpet but my X-terra does not have carpeting in the cargo area. Is there an alternative location for these wires?
michael  Jun 19, 2016

Yes, you can run the wires up through the rocker panel on the driver's side and the along under the molding and from there to the dash area for connection. A technician will know precisely what to do.

I ran my wires along the door sills- there are already wires running through there and the wires are protected from the elements.
