Boyo makes mounting simple by securing their VTL17ir backup camera onto a sturdy strap that stealthily attaches behind any license plate. Once you power the camera and run the included video cable to the screen in your dash, you'll gain a wide-angle view of what's behind you every time you throw your vehicle into reverse. Thanks to a stellar CMOS sensor and built-in IR lights, the VTL17ir delivers high-quality picture even when the night seems impenetrable. The camera offers selectable parking lines, and it'll also work as a front camera.
Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.
What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)
What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.
How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.
Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Backup Camera: The Boyo VTL17IR is a universal backup camera that can be added to almost any vehicle with an aftermarket receiver that features an integrated video monitor and composite video camera input. The Boyo VTL17IR includes a backup camera with an integrated license plate mounting bracket, composite video cable, and power/ground harness.
CMOS Image Sensor: The Boyo VTL17IR backup camera is equipped with a highly sensitive 1/4" color CMOS image sensor with a total resolution of 720 x 480 pixels.
Wide Viewing Angle: The VTL17IR backup camera offers a 170° (diagonal) wide viewing angle.
Infrared (IR): The VTL17IR utilizes infrared (IR) for better visibility at night.
Waterproof (IP67): The Boyo VTL17IR features a waterproof (IP67) housing to protect it from the elements.
Selectable Mirror/Non-Mirror Image: By default, the backup camera will display a "mirror" image. If using the camera as a front camera, cut the white loop of the cable that is attached to the camera to get a non-mirror image.
Parking Guidelines: The backup camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of your aftermarket display monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also three color-coded (green/yellow/red) horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot.
Composite Video Output: The Boyo VTL17IR backup camera if fitted with a composite video connector (RCA) which makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash receiver with integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. The total length of the composite video cable is 25.2'.
License Plate Mount: The VTL17IR features an integrated mounting bracket that is designed to use your vehicle's existing license plate mounting equipment. The integrated bracket is designed to be mounted behind the license plate so that only the camera is visible. Once the camera and bracket are mounted, you can position the camera forward or angle it down. The mounting hole spacing of the license plate bracket is roughly 7" to 7.3125" apart.

Installed camera on front and rear of 2003 F-150. Rear was installed using the license plate mount, front was mounted to the plastic bumper cover. Wiring was relatively easy to run and install, rear view worked first time. Have not tested front still waiting fro switch.
