Our take on the Etón FRX3

by Ralph Graves
Eton

Be prepared for weather emergencies with the Etón FRX3. It features a glow-in-the-dark frame on the handle, so when the lights suddenly go out, the FRX3 is easy to find. And don't worry about fumbling for a light — there's an LED flashlight built into the radio.

The FRX3 has a built-in digital AM/FM tuner. It can receive all seven NOAA weather bands, so you can monitor changing atmospheric conditions. And thanks to the FRX3's USB charger, you can keep your mobile phone powered up, so you can at stay in contact with the world.

Take the FRX3 along on your next camping trip, day at the beach, or picnic. Its solar panel can recharge the built-in battery pack in about 10 hours. If you can't wait that long or if there's no sunlight available, you can charge up the radio using its buit-in hand-cranked dynamo. If you have power, you can keep the radio charged through a USB connection to your computer. Or just power it with three "AAA" batteries (available separately).

Features

Overview: This is a portable AM/FM, weather band, emergency alert radio. The FRX3 can be powered by five different sources; the rechargeable Ni-MH battery (included), three AAA batteries (not included), the hand crank, built-in solar-panel, or USB DC. The hand crank provides emergency power. The unit also has a light and siren.

7 Weather Channels: This device allows you to select from one of the seven NOAA weather broadcast channels. These broadcasts are found in the public service frequency band, and include 162.400MHz (Channel 1), 162.425MHz (Channel 2), 162.450MHz (Channel 3), 162.475MHz (Channel 4), 162.500MHz (Channel 5), 162.525MHz (Channel 6), and 162.550MHz (Channel 7).

Weather Alert: Alert will turn the radio on when a weather alert is broadcast on the weather frequency you currently have tuned.

Antenna: This AM antenna in built into the radio. The 30" telescoping antenna covers all other bands.

Siren: The loud siren alerts others of your location if you need assistance.

Rechargeable Battery: The FRX3 features a built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery (3.6V/600mAh). It can be recharged by the built-in hand crank, the integrated solar-panel, or your computer (using the including USB cable). A fully charged battery can last between 3-4 hours.

  • Hand-Crank Charging: 90 scones of hand cranking provides approximately 5-7 minutes of radio at low volume or about 20 minutes of flashlight.
  • Solar Panel Charging: 10 hours in the sun will allow approximately 3 hours of low volume playback.
  • USB Charging: The battery will be fully charged in approximately 2 hours.

Cell Phone Charger: There is a phone charger output (USB type-A) on the side of the radio. You can charge your cell phone using the hand crank (phone specific adapters are available directly from etón). 10 to 15 minutes of hand-cranking results in only 1 minute of talk time.

Alarm Clock: The FRX3 has a built-in digital alarm clock.

Light: The built-in light has two modes; two white LEDs stay lit constantly to serve as a flash light, or a single red LED flashes as a beacon.

Glow-in-Dark Locator: After absorbing light energy, the glow-in-the-dark locator glows up to 8 hours allowing it to be found easily in the dark.

Line-Output: The FRX3 is fitted with a minijack (3.5mm) line-output for connecting the radio to your home stereo system.

Headphones: On the back of the radio is a 3.5mm (1/8") headphone jack.

Compact and handy

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 6/11/2012 11:42:00 AM

There's not much to the FRX3, and that's the idea. It's lightweight, compact, and still has all the features you want in an emergency radio. What I really liked about it was the glow-in-the-dark strip around the solar panel. Because if I'm trying to find this thing in the dark with the power out, I'm going to need all the help I can get — like a green glowing rectangle.

A word of advice: Before you start furiously cranking away on the dynamo, open up the back and check the connections. Because the rechargeable battery ships inside the radio — but not plugged in.

Works as promised

Written By Alex77, Portland OR on Thursday, October 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Happy with the product. Tested the main features once. Radio, phone charger, flashlight, battery power, hand crank power. Worked as promised. I only gave it 4 starts because it will take a while to determine durability. I've had devices work right out of the box but go haywire a few weeks later.
Pros:
Light and easy to crank. Clear radio and emergency channel signals.
Cons:
None so far.

FRX3 great

Written By Jim, Toronto on Friday, August 17, 2012

I bought this through Hammacher Schlemmer - it arrived today - it's fantastic - lightweight - did some hand cranking to get the charge fully up worked nicely - read some reviews stating that the solar panel will only directly charge in direct sunlight - mainly cause windows have UV block - but I live in an older house and I sat it on the window-sill and the battery icon started charging up right away - I put my headphones in and was happy that it came through in stereo as opposed to the old fashioned one ear, earpiece headphones....audio is great with headphones....and station reception was fantastic
Pros:
mostly everything
Cons:
led flashlight not as bright as I would have liked - but will do the job
