About the Klipsch Heresy III

James Ralston

Classic Klipsch sound that never goes out of style

The name "Heresy" pretty much sums up Klipsch's whole approach to their business: they are not a company to play it safe or play by the rules. This speaker has a sound all its own that our customers seem to love (just check out some of the glowing reviews).

Classic Klipsch sound that never goes out of style

The name "Heresy" pretty much sums up Klipsch's whole approach to their business: they are not a company to play it safe or play by the rules. This speaker has a sound all its own that our customers seem to love (just check out some of the glowing reviews).

The very first Heresy speakers were introduced to the world in 1957. Since then, Klipsch has tweaked and fine-tuned this classic design to create the Heresy III. A more powerful woofer, large-magnet titanium diaphragm tweeter, and new titanium diaphragm midrange compression driver all work together to give this speaker a thoroughly up-to-date sound, housed in a cool, decidedly vintage-looking design.

Klipsch also added dual speaker inputs to allow bi-wiring or bi-amping for even greater performance levels. And they increased the Heresy's already high-efficiency design by 3 dB to an impressive 99 dB — making them an excellent choice for low- and medium-powered tube amps.

Made in the USA

Just about the only thing that hasn't changed is the quality. Klipsch still makes the Heresy one at a time by hand in Hope, Arkansas. It comes in a range of gorgeous finishes, and includes an angled riser base for floor placement that can be removed for custom installations.

Notes from a former Crutchfield audio guru

"I'll never forget the first time I heard the Klipsch Heresys. It was by sheer coincidence. A college housemate had shown up at the door with a pair of them that he'd brought from home. Even way back then their design was over 20 years old, and they looked more like antiques than audio gear to me. Confident that my own then-up-to-the-minute and highly rated bookshelf speakers were more than a match for these 'elder statesmen,' I invited my housemate to hook them up for a listening session (and a little lesson in humility, heh heh)."

"But I was the one who was taken to school that day. The instant we fired up the Heresys I was speechless. Their sparkling clarity and dynamic range were on a level that my speakers could never touch. All the musical details came pouring out loud and clear in ways I'd never heard before. And although I never told him, I was totally envious. Many years later I can't even remember Chris' last name, but I'll never forget the sound of those Heresys and the lasting impression they made on me."
– Dave Bar, former Crutchfield advisor and writer

Features

Heresy III: First introduced in 1957, the Heresy started life as a compact center channel speaker for the Klipschorn in three-speaker stereo arrays. The Heresy is a compact, three-way design that uses horn-loaded compression drivers for midrange and treble reproduction and a direct radiating 12"woofer for the low frequencies.

3-Way Design: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker features a three-way design that uses horn-loaded compression drivers for midrange and treble reproduction, plus a direct radiating 12" woofer for the low frequencies.

  • 1" Tweeter (w/ Tractrix Horn): The 1" (K-107-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled to a Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics.
  • 1.75" Midrange (w/ Exponential Horn): The 1.75" (K-53-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled with an Exponential Horn for detailed, accurate midrange sound.
  • 12" Woofer: The 12" (K-28-E) fiber-composite cone woofer delivers powerful low frequencies. The 12" woofer also employs a treated cloth surround for added efficiency and flexibility.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover (HF: 5500Hz/MF: 850Hz) on the Heresy III features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker employs a solid, inert MDF cabinet which minimizes panel vibrations that can color sound. The acoustic suspension (sealed) design lends itself to the speaker's accurate, natural sound reproduction. The Heresy III is available in a high-quality cherry, blonde cherry, walnut, or black ash real-wood veneer finish.

Dual Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single/dual), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Placement: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker will perform well in a variety of locations. Corner, floor placement will deliver the highest degree of low bass reinforcement and the pre-installed slant riser base helps to compensate for the Heresy's short stature. This riser may be removed for shelf or cabinet placement. Self-stick rubber pads are supplied for attachment to the bottom of the cabinet to prevent scratching of shelves and hard surfaces. Best results will be achieved using the following general guidelines.

  • Place on a common wall 6' to 15' apart and position them equidistant from the wall behind the speakers.
  • Angle speakers toward the listener and even with or forward of any adjacent obstructions.
  • Placing them near a corner or wall provides the greatest amount of bass while moving the speakers away from room boundaries reduces bass.
  • Asymmetrical placement of a pair of speakers from adjacent side walls can smooth room-induced bass unevenness.
Note: Experiment with the above guidelines to suit your taste and to compensate for your room's acoustic characteristics.

Heritage Series (Made in the USA): The Klipsch Heritage Series is built and handmade in the USA at Klipsch's manufacturing facility in Hope Arkansas. Each Heritage Series loudspeaker utilizes Klipsch proprietary horn-loaded technology to bring a live music listening experience into the home. All Heritage Series loudspeakers are available in a variety high-quality wood veneers. Paul W. Klipsch believed four principles to be the foundation for great sound. They continue to drive the design of every new Klipsch speaker, today and tomorrow.

  • High Efficiency & Low Distortion: Klipsch horn technology is highly efficient, providing more accurate sound with less power and less distortion - resulting in louder, cleaner audio. Klipsch's Law: Efficiency is inversely proportional to distortion.
  • Controlled Directivity: Klipsch horn technology accurately directs sound to the proper locations, which, in turn, creates a more lifelike soundstage without wasting acoustic energy where sound is not needed or desired.
  • Wide Dynamic Range: The softest sounds are reproduced with remarkable clarity and the loudest sounds are delivered without harshness or distortion - with the greatest possible range between the softest and loudest sounds.
  • Flat Frequency Response: Audio is delivered without frequency bias - no unnatural highs, mids or lows - reproducing recorded sound as accurately as possible without colorization.
Note: The Heritage Series consists of the La Scala II, Cornwall III, Heresy III, and Forte (all sold separately).

Q
How does this speaker sound for home theater? Would love to have two separate systems, but probably not happening anytime soon.

A
Mine is set up for music listening only but it would probably sound fantastic. I am extremely impressed with the speakers.
scott  Jun 08, 2019
A
I use the system more for music than surround sound. I haven't watched a movie or show that would qualify for using it in that configuration.
daniel  May 08, 2019

These replaced some 25 yr old Polk towers I loved (still in use in another room) due to height-size restriction. Klipsch's are part of a system in a 550 sq ft room with 13' cathedral ceiling. Sound is more than adequate and easily fills the room. I would give them an A- (only because I loved the Polks so much). I don't think you will be disappointed.
gary  May 07, 2019

I can't speak to a home theater setup, but the clarity and dynamic range of these speakers is amazing. Recommend talking to the Crutchfield reps on how they would do in 5.1 configuration.
bruce  May 06, 2019
A
Assuming you have a subwoffer standing behind the Heresys in a home theater system, I think they will perform very well.
michael  May 05, 2019
A
I am completely satisfied with using these in an integrated system. I will say that I predominately use mine in music listening mode and I have two other sets of Klipsch tower speakers and a sub, which really make my sound well-rounded and dynamic. That said, when watching movies I do one of to things. I have presets on an equalizer, which helps with adjusting to theatre sound. If you don't have that, I have also just adjusted the tone, specifically turned down bass, and that works just fine. Overall, I have had no complaints in any capacity. Music wise... these things are awesome and for the limited home theatre use, I don't have any complaint. Hope that helps.

As I don't use the Klipsch Herasys in a surround sound system, but in a 2 channel system I won't say how it will sound through listening. I Will tell you though these speakers live in the midrange to quote Paul Klipsch .That being the case they should do a great job for dialect as well as the full range .You can't go wrong. They a truly musical. You must give them at least a month or two to break in.

Q
how bad or why is it in scratch and dent is there visible damage or missing something?
brian  Feb 14, 2019
1 answer
A
These items have minor cosmetic damage that could be visible but then might not be. We have no way to check if it has a blemish and if so, where it is located. In some cases the manufacturer's accessories have been replaced with generic equivalents so they will be able to work like new speakers (all the way down to still having adhesive rubber feet) and there is not even a blemish on the speaker. No matter which it is, you still have the manufacturer's warranty on them. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
Is there a recommended crossover frequency when used with a subwoofer ? Should the speakers be set to small or large ?
john  Dec 23, 2016
4 answers
A
Don't know. I have three different, separate playback systems, one stereo, one mono which uses the Klipsh, and one 14 speaker and dual subwoofer surround sound system. They are all in different rooms. I have found that both crossover and volume settings on subwoofers will depend on the size/shape/acoustic deadness of the room, the placement of the subwoofer, the power of the subwoofer amp and the "speed' or musicality of the particular sub. In short, yo do it by ear and personal taste.
ken  Dec 24, 2016
A
I would set to large if your processor doesn't let you set frequency. Mine Lexicon allows me to set the front L/R crossover to a fixed frequency. I would look at what Large vs small means via frequency on your system. Also these are acoustic suspension speakers and they reproduce the low frequencies a little different than a ported sub-woofer. You want a good amount of overlap or you will be missing some of the upper lows.
urban  Dec 24, 2016
A
I set mine to large they have a great base sound
brian  Dec 23, 2016
A
If you can set crossover at 150hz. Set up as large speaker.

Q
I understand that the nominal impedance of a Klipsch Heresy III is 8 ohms when wired normally. What impedance is presented to each amplifier channel when the Klipsch Heresy III is wired in biamp mode?
john  Nov 05, 2015

A
It is still 8 ohms
mark  Nov 06, 2015

Hi John, i'm sorry i do not have a clue, i would e-mail Klipsch and ask them. Joe
joe  Nov 06, 2015
A
It's my understanding that each amp in a biamp configuration would still the speaker as an 8 ohm load...HF amp 'sees' 8 ohms and LF amp 'sees' 8 ohms.
