About the Klipsch Heresy III

James Ralston

Classic Klipsch sound that never goes out of style

The name "Heresy" pretty much sums up Klipsch's whole approach to their business: they are not a company to play it safe or play by the rules. This speaker has a sound all its own that our customers seem to love (just check out some of the glowing reviews).

Classic Klipsch sound that never goes out of style

The name "Heresy" pretty much sums up Klipsch's whole approach to their business: they are not a company to play it safe or play by the rules. This speaker has a sound all its own that our customers seem to love (just check out some of the glowing reviews).

The very first Heresy speakers were introduced to the world in 1957. Since then, Klipsch has tweaked and fine-tuned this classic design to create the Heresy III. A more powerful woofer, large-magnet titanium diaphragm tweeter, and new titanium diaphragm midrange compression driver all work together to give this speaker a thoroughly up-to-date sound, housed in a cool, decidedly vintage-looking design.

Klipsch also added dual speaker inputs to allow bi-wiring or bi-amping for even greater performance levels. And they increased the Heresy's already high-efficiency design by 3 dB to an impressive 99 dB — making them an excellent choice for low- and medium-powered tube amps.

Made in the USA

Just about the only thing that hasn't changed is the quality. Klipsch still makes the Heresy one at a time by hand in Hope, Arkansas. It comes in a range of gorgeous finishes, and includes an angled riser base for floor placement that can be removed for custom installations.

Notes from a former Crutchfield audio guru

"I'll never forget the first time I heard the Klipsch Heresys. It was by sheer coincidence. A college housemate had shown up at the door with a pair of them that he'd brought from home. Even way back then their design was over 20 years old, and they looked more like antiques than audio gear to me. Confident that my own then-up-to-the-minute and highly rated bookshelf speakers were more than a match for these 'elder statesmen,' I invited my housemate to hook them up for a listening session (and a little lesson in humility, heh heh)."

"But I was the one who was taken to school that day. The instant we fired up the Heresys I was speechless. Their sparkling clarity and dynamic range were on a level that my speakers could never touch. All the musical details came pouring out loud and clear in ways I'd never heard before. And although I never told him, I was totally envious. Many years later I can't even remember Chris' last name, but I'll never forget the sound of those Heresys and the lasting impression they made on me."
– Dave Bar, former Crutchfield advisor and writer

Features

Heresy III: First introduced in 1957, the Heresy started life as a compact center channel speaker for the Klipschorn in three-speaker stereo arrays. The Heresy is a compact, three-way design that uses horn-loaded compression drivers for midrange and treble reproduction and a direct radiating 12"woofer for the low frequencies.

3-Way Design: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker features a three-way design that uses horn-loaded compression drivers for midrange and treble reproduction, plus a direct radiating 12" woofer for the low frequencies.

  • 1" Tweeter (w/ Tractrix Horn): The 1" (K-107-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled to a Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics.
  • 1.75" Midrange (w/ Exponential Horn): The 1.75" (K-53-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled with an Exponential Horn for detailed, accurate midrange sound.
  • 12" Woofer: The 12" (K-28-E) fiber-composite cone woofer delivers powerful low frequencies. The 12" woofer also employs a treated cloth surround for added efficiency and flexibility.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover (HF: 5500Hz/MF: 850Hz) on the Heresy III features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker employs a solid, inert MDF cabinet which minimizes panel vibrations that can color sound. The acoustic suspension (sealed) design lends itself to the speaker's accurate, natural sound reproduction. The Heresy III is available in a high-quality cherry, blonde cherry, walnut, or black ash real-wood veneer finish.

Dual Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single/dual), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Placement: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker will perform well in a variety of locations. Corner, floor placement will deliver the highest degree of low bass reinforcement and the pre-installed slant riser base helps to compensate for the Heresy's short stature. This riser may be removed for shelf or cabinet placement. Self-stick rubber pads are supplied for attachment to the bottom of the cabinet to prevent scratching of shelves and hard surfaces. Best results will be achieved using the following general guidelines.

  • Place on a common wall 6' to 15' apart and position them equidistant from the wall behind the speakers.
  • Angle speakers toward the listener and even with or forward of any adjacent obstructions.
  • Placing them near a corner or wall provides the greatest amount of bass while moving the speakers away from room boundaries reduces bass.
  • Asymmetrical placement of a pair of speakers from adjacent side walls can smooth room-induced bass unevenness.
Note: Experiment with the above guidelines to suit your taste and to compensate for your room's acoustic characteristics.

Heritage Series (Made in the USA): The Klipsch Heritage Series is built and handmade in the USA at Klipsch's manufacturing facility in Hope Arkansas. Each Heritage Series loudspeaker utilizes Klipsch proprietary horn-loaded technology to bring a live music listening experience into the home. All Heritage Series loudspeakers are available in a variety high-quality wood veneers. Paul W. Klipsch believed four principles to be the foundation for great sound. They continue to drive the design of every new Klipsch speaker, today and tomorrow.

  • High Efficiency & Low Distortion: Klipsch horn technology is highly efficient, providing more accurate sound with less power and less distortion - resulting in louder, cleaner audio. Klipsch's Law: Efficiency is inversely proportional to distortion.
  • Controlled Directivity: Klipsch horn technology accurately directs sound to the proper locations, which, in turn, creates a more lifelike soundstage without wasting acoustic energy where sound is not needed or desired.
  • Wide Dynamic Range: The softest sounds are reproduced with remarkable clarity and the loudest sounds are delivered without harshness or distortion - with the greatest possible range between the softest and loudest sounds.
  • Flat Frequency Response: Audio is delivered without frequency bias - no unnatural highs, mids or lows - reproducing recorded sound as accurately as possible without colorization.
Note: The Heritage Series consists of the La Scala II, Cornwall III, Heresy III, and Forte (all sold separately).

Q
Hi there! I'm thinking of purchasing a pair of Heresies-is there an amp you would recommend? I mostly listen to rock, and I'd like to keep it under, say, $600 or so. Thank you!

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Does this thing have a Sub Out if required in future ?

No it does not. I used my receiver

No, these speakers have just the normal two wire binding posts. Properly placed, you may find you don't need a sub. Mine are mounted in a very unorthodox manner and I do have a powered sub but the connection for it comes our of the amplifier.
steven  May 06, 2018
A
Not to my knowledge. I have heard that historically Klipsch do not need a lot of power to drive them. They were a gift to my brother and the backs have the bi-wire posts only. Nothing for a sub.

Q
Can the Heresey's be turned sideway and used as large bookshelf speakers? I have Avid 103's and extra space beyond them. Ready for an update.

Yes, but these are very heavy, most bookshelves would stress with these on them.

No. Sorry

Yes they can be used as a bookshelf speaker. You can remove the angled base if needed for mid height use (for proper angle). I use them in my studio along with other speakers (you know A-B-C comparisons).
jerry  Jan 30, 2018
A
Yes. But be aware the Heresy is LARGE and HEAVY to be considered a bookshelf speaker.
ken  Jan 30, 2018

Yes, the bottom incline base can be unscrewed... thus the logo on the grill turned. Regards MF

Q
How will these speakers sound as my main speakers for my home theater surround sound ? Also how will these hereseys sound sitting low to the floor should I place these speakers at ear level or place them on the floor the way they are meant to be?

The Speakers should sound fine but in my opinion they are really best with two channel audio. Seems like a waste to have them muddied up with surround sound. I have used mine both on floor and with stands. I currently have them up on Bose 301 stands. But, I use two separate sub woofers, one for each channel, when they are on the stands....they loose "punch" once they are elevated. The Herritage line of Klipsch speakers are really meant for 2 channel audio...hope this helps ;)

If you are going to use them mostly for home theater,on the floor will be fine. If you use them for stereo listening ,put them on a 20 inch stand or heavy wood base ,it will shine on in the air with your favorite music. You could even put them on about a foot high base with the angle feet in place and have a wonderful sound too I have owned many speakers of all costs and contours.I will never part with my heritage speakers. Or my cornwall ONES .They go in the will. And i prefer them to my RF 7 11 s !!!!!!

These speakers sound great as the main speakers in a home theater surround sound system. I placed them in a bookshelf system about 2 inches off the floor. As main speakers, I don't think there is any need to raise the speakers any higher and I would not place them at ear level, although I do have your levels speakers as surrounds.

Hi Lewis. I purchased a set of these speakers back on June. I use them everyday and they produce the highest quality sound beyond anything I dreamed possible. I use for mainly music but I feel they would capture all the sound levels you would ever experience. The highs and lows and the deep bads are incredible in these speakers. I started with mine on the floor but raised them about 2 feet off the floor and wow, even better sound. Approaching ear level does make a difference. Hope this helps you make a choice.
