Features

Two-Way Design: The Klipsch R-1650-C in-ceiling speaker employs a 6.5" polymer-cone woofer and a large motor structure for high sensitivity. A coaxially mounted 1" polymer-dome tweeter distributes smooth, clear highs over a wide area. The Klipsch R-1650-C in-ceiling speaker brings dynamic acoustic performance to both home and commercial environments.

Basket/Frame: The R-1650-C has a sturdy ABS basket and frame. The frame can be painted to match any decor (a clear paint mask is supplied to protect the drivers from overspray). The aluminum mesh grille is also paintable.

Spring-Clip Terminals: The Klipsch R-1650-C in-ceiling speaker features two spring-clip terminals which will accept either bare speaker wire or pin-connectors. The spring-clip speaker terminals are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Power Specifications Note: The manufacturer has specified the maximum power handling of this speaker as 35 watts RMS (140 W Peak). Klipsch has also published a recommended amplifier power specification as 70 watts.

Mounting Options

Installation: The speaker requires a cutout diameter of 8.1875" and a mounting depth of 3.9375". The speaker should be installed in drywall at least 3/8" thick. It can also be installed in a drop ceiling (2' x 2' or 2' x 4' ceiling tiles only). In both cases, to maximize the acoustic performance of the in-ceiling speakers, Klipsch recommends you replace the original mounting panel with 1/2" or 3/4" plywood or MDF. A cardboard template is included to assist you in making the cutout.

Q
can you install outside ?

A
I don't know, mine are all mounted in the ceilings of my house. What I did do over my wife's tub was to install Polk speakers that were rated for Damp Environments they work great.

A
These are intended to be installed indoors. Location, protection and climate are all factors but the components on these are not protected in any way from the elements. Outdoor speakers are manufactured to be resistant to weather and would be my preferred option.
terry  Oct 28, 2021
A
Only if there is no chance of direct water, meaning if in an overhang or a covered porch yes. They are meant to be interior ceiling speakers. Good speaker well worth the effort.

Q
Do these require a separate subwoofer? I have 1 room which will have 5 speakers and 1 room that will have 2. Would these be good?

A
My setup has a subwoofer with 7 speakers but another area with just two of these speakers that does not correspond directly with a subwoofer. It's essentially to mirror audio in another area outside of main sitting/theater area

Q
How do these compare with the Klipsch DS-160CDT? Did anyone compare to see if it's worth the upgrade cost?

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
Are backboxes recommended for Klipsch 1650 or 1800 in-ceiling applications? Without backboxes, mine would be buried in 12" of blown-in insulation.

A
John, I had about 10" of insulation. I had to move it away from the hole to mount the speaker. When it was done I just pushed it gently back to surround but not cover the back of the speaker. They sound great.
roger  Sep 05, 2017
A
Yes, I installed them without back boxes at first didn't sound that good, after I installed the back boxes the sound quality is much better

Q
I have two of these going in my great room / kitchen space and want to know if an amp capable of 17w @ 8ohms will be anywhere near enough to hear music? This would be a Raspberry Pi + Hifiberry AMP+ setup. Thanks!
nick  Feb 06, 2017
1 answer
A
Given the favorable sensitivity rating (91 dB) and the recommended power for the Klipsch R-1650C, an amplifier producing 17 watts per channel should be sufficient to drive these speakers. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
I love Klipsch and just purchased a home with a 5.1 in ceiling system prewired. I want to get these, but wanted to make sure that I am getting the right thing. Is this speaker work for all 5 positions? If not, what other ones did you guys get? I am also thinking about getting an Onkyo receiver... any suggestions on those? Thanks for your time and help!!

I used mine on a back patio setting not in a surround system. The sound performance is very good.
james  Dec 02, 2013

I am not an expert at this, but I believe the center channel should be different. Doesn't it need to be a speaker tuned/built for center channel use/voices? Otherwise, I am so happy I paid more for these speakers. They are incredible. I have them in my ceiling with a small Sonos amp and they can rock if you turn them up, but have amazing quality of sound.
scott  Dec 02, 2013
A
I would not recommend these speakers for using in a surround sound system. I purchased them as overheads in a kitchen for listening to music. They provide a very uniform sound and are pretty much perfect for listening to music. For a 5.1 in-wall surround system you should look into getting in-ceiling speakers similar to these for the rear two channels, and in-wall speakers for front left, center and right channels. Stay away from using in-ceiling speakers for stereo fronts, as the sound is intended to be fired from the television to your ears as apposed to from the ceiling down to the top of your head. The positioning would be off, which would defeat the purpose of surround sound.
