Speaker technology for dynamic performance

A rigid anodized aluminum woofer produces accurate bass and mid-bass. Two vertically stacked tweeters point in opposite directions. This clever design disperses ambient surround effects across a wide arc, for a diffuse soundfield that completely envelops the listener. It also allows this speaker to deliver great sound even if you place it in a less-than-ideal location.

Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeters inside a flared opening, known as a "horn." The array of two controlled dispersion horn tweeters angled away from each other yields an incredibly wide wave pattern, perfect for ambient movie sound or a realistic concert feel to music.

A slimmer chance of being seen

The '5650-S II keeps a low profile with its Slimtrim™ grille. The visible frame size is reduced by 90% and grille depth is reduced by 80% over previous designs, for a nearly flush finish that blends in beautifully. The paintable, aluminum, magnetic grille attaches securely with ease to virtually eliminate resonant distortion.

An optional in-wall bracket is recommended for installing the R-5650-S II in new construction.

Features

In-Wall Surround Speaker: The Klipsch R-5650-S in-wall speaker is designed specifically for surround use in home theater applications. Its unique, patent-pending horn array technology allows system designers to create enveloping sound fields and localized effects without disruption the home's decor. For the main left, right, and center speakers in the home theater system, the Klipsch R-5650-S-II (714R5650W2, sold separately) is recommended.

Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): The R-5650-S II draws listeners into the middle of the action through the use of Klipsch's proprietary Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST). The careful alignment of the two controlled-directivity Tractrix Horn tweeters angled opposite of one another yields an incredibly wide dispersion pattern.

High Efficiency: The high-efficiency design of the Klipsch in-wall speakers allows you to get much more output than most in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. Due to the long speaker wire runs that are common in whole-house audio systems, the power coming from the amplifier is significantly reduced by the time it reaches the speakers. The 92dB efficiency of this speaker means it will play much louder at low power than other less-efficient speakers.

2-Way Speaker System: The Klipsch R-5650-S II in-wall speaker uses dual 1" Titanium compression drivers (tweeters) mated to dual 90° x 90° square Tractrix Horns, vertically stacked and skewed to maximize ambience, combined with a 6.5" Cerametallic woofer in a 2-way design.

  • Tweeter: The two vertically-stacked, Tractrix Horn-loaded 1" Titanium dome compression tweeters are pointed in opposite directions to maximize diffusion, clarity, and efficiency. The horn design dramatically increases efficiency by enabling the speaker to produce more output using less energy. The addition of a Linear Travel Suspension to the tweeters increases high frequency detail and smoothness.
  • Woofer: The copper-colored 6.5" Cerametallic woofer features a solid Aluminum diaphragm, anodized to add stiffness and provide perfect damping, that delivers increased rigidity for even tighter, more defined bass. The new integrated dust cap further strengthens the cone and helps ventilate the voice coil for increased driver durability.

Speaker Terminals: The speaker has a gold-plated pair of spring-loaded binding posts that can accept up to 12-gauge wire, single banana plugs, or pin connectors.

ABS Basket/Frame: The R-5650-S II has a sturdy ABS basket and frame. The frame can be painted to match any decor.

SlimTrim Magnetic Grille: With an all new grille, the visible frame size is reduced by 90% and grille depth is reduced by 80% over the previous design, for a more edge-to-edge consistent look that blends in with the wall more attractively. The new aluminum, paintable, magnetic grille attaches tightly and securely with ease to virtually eliminate resonant distortion.

Power Specifications Note: The manufacturer has specified the maximum power handling of this speaker as 50 watts RMS (200 W Peak). Klipsch has also published a recommended amplifier power specification as 100 watts.

Mounting Options

Installation: The speaker can be installed in new or existing construction. It requires a cutout diameter of 8" wide x 13" high. The mounting flange around the speaker measures 0.75" wide (0.875" wide with grille). For new construction, purchase of the IK-650-W installation kit (714IK650W, sold separately) is highly recommended. For existing construction, the speaker should be installed in drywall (or other mounting surfaces) at least 3/8" thick.

IR Knockout: A 1/2" diameter knockout panel is provided in the lower left hand corner of the speaker frame for installing an IR sensor.

Customer Q&A

Q
Can this speaker be used for front R and L in a 4.1.2 setup? Would the tweeters firing in opposite directions achieve a good phantom center channel?
clint  Apr 17, 2022
1 answer
A
This speaker does not work well as a front speaker. It should only be used as a surround speaker. We have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 who can help give a personal recommendation on a speaker setup for your system

Q
Is volume adjusted on each horn as audio elements move, or is volume output the same on each?
drew  Sep 16, 2021
1 answer
A
The audio on each horn does not change with an objects movement. It remains the same on each

Q
Would these work well for front L and R speakers?
gretchen  Jan 25, 2021
1 answer
A
These speakers would not work well as the front left and right speakers and should only be used as the surround speakers. The R-5650-W II speakers are similar and will work well as the front speakers: www.crutchfield.com/p_714R5650W2/item.html

Would these work well for front L and R speakers?

A
I currently have them in the rear behind the couch and they sound great, so answer is yes they will work for front speakers but I personally would get the 5650 with the single adjustable horn for front.
jamesin  Jan 27, 2021
A
These are outstanding in-wall speakers that i am currently using in a home theater configuration. Yes they will work well for front L/R speakers.
sylvia  Jan 27, 2021
A
I currently have them for my rear speakers. The tweeter horn on these speakers are fixed in 2 different directions and can not be adjusted. I think they work well for the back speakers but may not be the ideal speaker for the fronts. I would probably go with Klipsch R-5800-W II for the fronts in which the tweeter horn can be directed to your liking since you would want the sound coming at you instead of going in two different directions. You can always ask the experts at Crutchfield for their recommendations as well. A Second opinion is always good to get.
james  Jan 26, 2021

I have them as my rear surround speakers in my media room. They sound great and I would certianly use them as front L & R downstairs in my living room. I love them.

Carl, I think they are very good, but as I am 86 years old and was a pilot for 43 years my hearing is not all that good. A Navy Flight Surgeon once commented that he thought we aviators were wasting our money as our hearing was not that great anyway!
donald r  Jan 29, 2020

The theater room is not finished so I have not listened to them - anticipating superior sound in two weeks!

Q
Could these be used in the ceiling as side/rear surrounds?
christopher  Dec 28, 2018

A
I purchased these for rear wall mounted surround speakers. I think they are excellent for that purpose. They have bright clear sound yet have good base to complement my Vandersteen Front speakers.
gary  Dec 29, 2018
A
I used them as side/rear surrounds. But I put them in the wall. I wouldn't put them in the ceiling but you can. I would buy in ceiling speakers with directional tweeter.
eric  Dec 28, 2018
A
Yes, they CAN be mounted in the ceiling, however the R-5650-S II has bi-directional tweeters for better sound dispersion in a room. Mounting them in the ceiling means the tweeters wouldn't project around the room but towards the floor, just in two directions. For ceiling applications, I'd recommend the CDT-5650-C II, Klipsch's 6" Ceiling Speaker. It has an adjustable tweeter allowing you to aim it at your primary seating position. They have great frequency response and sound great. For additional base, the CDT-5800-C II, the 8" version, produces a little more in the low- and mid-range.

Q
If I want to space these speakers between studs that are 9 inches apart (inside to inside), will they fit?
adam  Jan 04, 2017
2 answers
A
The spec says 9.3" wide. I believe that measurement is the width of the front baffle. If the front baffle is going to fit in between the studs it won't fit, but if you plan on using these as wall mounts where the baffle is on the face in front of the studs, you should have room. Take a look at the back picture and you can see the clips that hold them snug to your drywall are about a .5" inside the outside edge on both sides.

that is how i'm using them. they are my back surrounds and i have towers for the front. they work perfect that way. however, i'm using them w/ a denon receiver.

I purchased a pair of these speakers and a pair of the model with single tweeters. I use these as my side surround speakers and the single tweeter speaker as the rear surround in a 7.2 speaker arrangement. I really like the sound of the system. Very loud and very very clear.

Q
Would these speakers provide enough sound for an open concept two story living room?
chris  Sep 22, 2014
3 answers
A
These are surround speakers. You need towers and twin subs for a full sound. I have reference line towers, twin subs and these for the surrounds. They work well for that purpose but not as main speakers. Crossovers set at 120 so subs doing the heavy lifting for these.
brian  Oct 12, 2016
A
Definitely! If you like music with lots of bass, like "Breakage" or "LX-one" you might want to go for a set of floorstanders. My current setup will rattle every door in my 2000 square foot home.
michael r  Sep 26, 2014
A
Hi Chris, I wish I could give you a better answer then this one but I have not installed these speakers yet because the room there going into is a Theater room and Bar. This has been a long project because of the Bar being customed built. I really think these speakers will be a great set up with my two Subs.
