No room for towers? These bookshelf speakers pack a punch.

Klipsch® designed their impressive RB-61 IIs to deliver the same kind of thrills and intensity as their larger tower speakers — you'll be amazed at the kind of sound these put out. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. These bookshelf speakers work equally well as a stereo pair for music listening or as the front left and right speakers in your home theater system.

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RB-61 IIs also use newly machined, light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smoother mids and tighter bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones helps to dampen unwanted vibrations and distortion, while an integrated dustcap gives them a cleaner look and adds stability. Dual five-way binding posts let you bi-amp or bi-wire these speakers for even better performance. And the rigid, braced cabinets come in a handsome woodgrain vinyl finish.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Currently being used as surrounds, but were mains. These are great. They can sound very big, and accurate. The highs are detailed and can also produce a nice low frequency. Very good speaker indeed.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: None

I have had Klipsch speakers for years, from floor standing to bookshelf. I got these to go to a 7.2 set up and just like my other speakers these sound great. If I need more I would be more than happy to add another set to my unit. I don`t think you can wrong by buying these.

Pros: great sound

Cons: none that I see.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having simple styling and great sound for their size, I paired these with a R-25C center and a R-112SW for a very capable 2.1 home theater system that works great for my modest space and setup.

Pros: - Value - Fidelity

Big sound, small footprint

Written By Jahoffert, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very impressed with the sound, considering I came from a very large floorstanding speaker. Renovations to my house no longer allowed such a large size speaker. Not only is the sound crystal clear, now I will have to upgrade the center channel to match the clarity, and they are beautiful to look at with the covers off!

Pros: Crystal clear Beautiful Big sound for small footprint

Cons: Wish it came in gloss black

Great range of sound. I used these as Front speakers in my 6-channel setup and they sound great . They weigh about 19lbs each so I was able to use wall mounts. I play a lot of jazz music and the horns sound great !

Pros: Size , and good range of sound

Cons: None

These speakers are pared off with some older Boston vr40 towers with a Yamaha rx 797 stereo 2 chan. receiver and the sound you get is unreal, this system is in my man cave so I listen to a lot of music., its hooked up to my tv and cable which is great, you will need a sub if using by themselves,

Pros: Can't beat these speakers

Cons: none

I bought four of these speakers to use with my home theater system. They are used with the Definite Technology ProSub 800 sub woofer, Klipsch Reference RC-52 II center speaker and Onkyo TX-NR737 receiver. I listen to pipe organ music as well as movies. They are amazing and have passed the pipe organ test. Clarity in both the high and very lows.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice pair of bookshelf speakers at a great price. I purchased it for home theater use, but it sounds great when listening to my favorite tunes too! I am using them for my front L&R speakers. I would recommend these to anyone who is limited to bookshelf speakers for Front Left and Right home theater speakers. They require a subwoofer to supply the low frequency range, but that's a given when you are stuck with bookshelf speakers. My Onkyo TX-NR636 recognized their crossover frequency at 60 Hz which was expected.

Pros: Great price for a nice quality pair of bookshelf speakers. Well built, good looking speaker. Nice magnetic speaker grills.

Cons: None considering its a Bookshelf speaker.

These speakers are excellent, put out a lot of sound for such a small footprint. Really clear well defined sound, replaced my $700 JBL bookshelf speakers with these and these blow the JBL's away by a mile.

Pros: Sound quality.

Cons: none.

Dynamite Book shelf speakers

Written By Phil L, Maine on Wednesday, July 08, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What great speakers for the price! I bought these as rear surrounds in a 5.1 set-up. I have 2 Klipsch, KLF 30 (200 Watts) for mains, a 300 watt reference series powered sub and a 100 watt reference series center channel speaker, powered by a Denon receiver. I wanted speakers that would sonically match my mains and other speakers and these were just right. The size is deceiving considering the power and punch they deliver. Excellent clarity as stated in other reviews. You can't go wrong for the money and these would work well for mains if space is an issue.

Pros: Punchy, clear, plenty of bass response in a small package

Cons: None

Great speakers. They look great, sound better, and they're an awesome value.

Pros: - Awesome bass response - Great size for small spaces - Amazing output - Good top-end definition - Awesome for home theater use

Cons: - Flat midrange response with my head unit, definitely fixable using a different head unit, but makes it less usable for music than for home theater.

I received my delivery confirmation while I was setting up my speakers. Crutchfield as always was on it from beginning to delivery. I purchased these to pair with my rf2s. They are as excellent as my Crutchfield service. Highly recommended.

Pros: Very efficient, good finish (scratch n dent), excellent sound stage and depth.

Cons: None at this time.

Customer review influence

Written By Home, Massachusetts on Monday, June 15, 2015

I bought a pair of these based on the reviews of Crutchfield customers. This is why it is good to wait to buy new products as they are not yet time tested. A satisfied customer is a time test. This is an older now discounted speaker but consider it time tested. 97-5 star reviews says something about these speakers. I did not hear them before I bought mine. I knew if I did not like them I could return them but with customer reviews in ernest about these speakers I knew I wouldn't. I will add to the 5 star rating for these speakers as they are worth getting them now while you can and they are discounted, well worth it!

Pros: Nice open convincing soundstage that Klipsch is famous for. Big sound from bookshelf speakers! Great classical and jazz speakers but even Rock sounds good through these. Most speakers do a bad job with Rock music in my opinion as it is a matter of base vs treble minus drum vocal and even guitar detail. With Klipsch I hear detail at neutral settings. I for one do not like to adjust bass and treble controls to get music to sound right. A piano must sound real with good speakers.

Cons: None! They can play loudly so be careful and do not abuse them.

Great sound!! With a 30 year old Marantz receiver I bought in high school in 1982, (30 watts per channel) I can turn it up and blow the windows out. Listening to good jazz, I can almost count how many musicians are in the band! No need for a sub woofer.

Pros: Great sound at a reasonable price. They even look good!

Cons: I waited too long to buy great speakers!

These speakers look simple, but they really sound great.... especially jazz and classical music. You will clearly hear the flute, the oboe, the clarinet. The sax is so clear and defined on these speakers that do not require too much power. Bass is tight and definite, and the human voice comes forth naturally. There is no audible distortion, full-bodied and clean sound. Get these Klipsch speakers-- you will love them!

Written By Eric, Virginia on Wednesday, April 01, 2015

I bought these speakers to go in my upstairs office. I have them paired with a klipsch rc-500 and SW-450. The speakers are bigger than I expected but that's a good thing. The sound is awesome which is I've come to expect from klipsch speakers. Very clear highs and mids, bass is okay but I would recommend a sub. They sound great with music and movies. I'm totally satisfied with these speakers and would highly recommend them.

Pros: Sound and build quality

Cons: None

Not For Music

Written By mtn_dweller, California on Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace a pair of Infinity Alphas that were going to be moved to another location. Just to test them, I set them on a table, hooked up a CD player to my Sansui AU517and.... not so good. They were excessively bright to my ears and muddy on the bottom end. Well, not a fair test, as they were purchased to listen to vinyl. So, they were then connected to my preamp and AR CL60 Tube amp. Hmm, better, but where are the lower mids and bass? By now I was doubting what my ears were telling me, so I placed them next to the Infinity speakers so that location effects could be minimized, hooked them up so they could be A/B'd (switched back and forth), and listened some more. They steadily improved as they broke in, but are still very lacking in definition and fullness in the low mids and bass. The high end, conversely, seems too detailed and forward, like a photoshopped image that has been oversharpend and oversaturated. The soundstage is both wide and deep, but again unnaturally so. At this point, I'm considering auditioning them in my theater system as an extra pair of front speakers. Their "in your face" sound might just be amazing for movies, and the sub and towers will take care of the low and mids. Most speakers these days have to exist in the home theater realm, and I suspect that these were designed with that in mind. However, if you are looking for rich sound, if you want to hear the music not the speakers, then these are probably not the right choice.

Pros: Nice looking, well built speakers.

Cons: Thin in the low midrange and bottom end. Annoyingly bright highs.

As always shipping was fast and the Klipsch Reference RB-61 II Bookshelf speakers sound good with my old 1970-something Craig amp and Pioneer turntable. I also stream music from my network to a HC Bluetooth receiver attached to my amp aux input, it sounds very good also.

Pros: Sounds Good.

Cons: None.

Good at the reduced price

Written By WayneL, California on Monday, March 23, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are really really big speakers and the huge plastic prothesis on the front doesn't help. At the reduced price, they are fairly priced and I would recommend them. I would never consider them at the MSRP. One could buy a much much better set up for $550. The front ports are a requirement because I need to place the rears of them within several inches of a wall. I'm not pro or anti horn-loaded tweeter and by adjusting the toe-in correctly, I don't think anyone could really tell anyway (I mean if they were blindfolded and honest). Very clear presentation of music but too bright without some EQ balancing. Strong bass and the specs are correct, the bass is very usable down to 40Hz (they tested at only -5dB at 40Hz to be exact). No subwoofer is needed unless you have techno house parties or your own large theatre room. These are very good audio speakers, not hardcore audiophile speakers (think NHT, Monitor Audio, PSB, KEF, B&W, Q Acoustics, etc...just as starting points) and that's fine. Very few people are really that sensitive anyway and when you hear the pluck of an acoustic bass or a clear bang of kettle drum, you'll smile.

Pros: Fairly priced now Front ports Strong controlled bass

Cons: Huge Plastic-y Too bright (fix-able)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for my computer to replace some very old floor speakers (5 way with 10" woofer) I was currently using . For being 1/3 the size of my old speakers they sound a whole lot better. It's unbelievable how much more clean bass these smaller speakers produce. The whole frequency range is improved from lows to the highs. It's just important to me to be able to hear the cymbals as well as the bass and everything in between. Being a ex-musician (with hearing loss) I appreciate being able to here the individual instruments more cleanly. I'm running these speakers with a 40 year old 20 watt Marantz amp. I liked them enough to order Klipsch speakers for main entertainment system. I guess it was a bit of shock going from some old equipment to newer technology.

Pros: Fantastic sound for a small package.

Right out of the box I fell in love with the Klipsch RB 61's. The sound quality is absolutely fantastic. The love and technology put into these speakers definitely shows with every sound that pours out of them. I found that as the volume increases the quality of the sound is not compromised. Klipsch' signature Tractrix horn design is awesome for the highs and provide a true crisp sound. Their design is absolutely beautiful yet simple and look even better with the protective covers removed only to show off that stunning cerametalic woofer. The best part of the buying experience is the great customer service provided by the knowledgeable and friendly Crutchfield staff. These speakers are highly recommended. If you want to hear all of your audio in a true rich manor, purchasing these speakers is a worth while investment.

Pros: Out of the box sound, clarity, power, very distinguished and beautiful design.

I bought these speakers as replacements for JBL bookshelf speakers in my garage / workshop / man cave. They are driven by an 80 Watt Denon Stereo receiver. I'm thrilled with the detail and clarity of the sound. My garage rocks! I have long been a fan of Klipsch products and my den surround system utilizes only Klipsch speakers. So I had a good idea that these speakers would sound great and they do. Also, I'm pleased with the prompt and free shipping. I highly recommend these speakers.

Pros: Sound is incredible......really pleasing to hear at any volume.

I drove myself crazy trying to figure out what way to go, floor standing speakers for twice the cost or this pair of bookself speakers. i had already made up my mind that Klipsch was going to the brand. I went with this speaker and I am glad I did. It fit my budget and the clarity was exceptional. More than emough bass and at low volume they really performed. The space I saved and the price point fit my needs to the t. I listen to mostly rock and blues and it brought out much more detail than my previous speakers. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: The highs coming from the tweeter horn.

Cons: I didnt think the sound traveled as well as I hoped for I have a big room, tal ceilings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these so I could use my old (almost 30 years old) Kenwood receiver that I hadn't has speakers for or used in about 10 years. I was really impressed with the sound. I'm no audiophile, but once I heard these I decided to order a new 7.2 receiver along with additional floor standing, center and sub -woofer speaker (all Klipsch) to round out a new setup. It really gave me a desire to build a decent system. These sound really nice in the 15x20 foot room they're in but will certainly benefit from a sub-woofer. Will ultimately use them as rear speaker in a multi-channel set-up.

Pros: Great sound in smaller stereo set-up in a 15x20 room.

Cons: Not really a negative because it's as I would expect, but they will benefit from the addition of a sub-woofer.

Solid, well made construction and good looks makes these speakers a love at first site encounter! The sound is very up front with plenty of detail and warmth. They definitely dish out a "stick to your ribs" bacon and eggs presence and transparency that is lacking in other speakers in this class that only serve disappointing bowls of oatmeal!

Pros: price, size, sound, appearance and solidity

Absolutely fantastic speakers - great imaging for stereo playback, and just unbeatable for depth and detail in my 7.1 home theater. These are my front speakers, and the movie experience has been raised to a new level by the addition of the speakers. And they are a CRAZY deal for the cherry finish for the price. Easy match up with speakers that are 2x + the price. I am very glad I went with large bookshelf speakers vs. floorstanding.

Pros: Detail, depth and imaging.

Surprising Bass and Clean High End

Written By Chris, Oklahoma on Saturday, August 23, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Own couple pairs of Klipsch 20+yr old KG-4 and Cornwall II speakers (updated crossovers, tweeter domes etc) and a couple newer Klipsch speakers. I bought these RB-61 II to be used on my desktop with my Cambridge 35w x2 Topaz AM-10 amp. The amp consumes 260 watts - really good clean power with lots of control and headroom. With strong amp and excellent efficiency of these new speakers - my desktop is amazing. The low end of these speakers is present but not overbearing and the highs do really well in spite of being relatively close together. As I have evolved from years of Boston Acoustics (traditional speakers) to the Klipsch horn/woofer efficient approach what I have noticed the most is how the speakers handle power and also approach concert level live dB levels without flinching. At the higher end and higher wattage the Bostons would start breaking up even though there was ample amplifier power. (nothing against vintage or newer Boston - just their design) These Klipsch's, RB-61II, just take it in stride and don't even flinch. Just so solid in their performance, weight and approach. Anyway, no hesitation and would recommend these. The 6.5" woofer and larger cabinet clearly makes a difference. Repeating myself, but these are some serious speakers that clearly are designed with reference performance in mind.

Pros: Clear highs Deep appropriate bass Highly efficient - less watts needed

Cons: Slightly larger cabinet depth - not a flaw just a fact (physics - need strong motor(speaker) and cabinet size to move some serious air)

These two babies pack a serious punch...But if you are using for home theater purposes...Be sure to get a sub. The low end isn't the best...But that's why I went bookshelf instead of floor standing. Great size, they look awesome, and the highs are crisp and clean.

Pretty good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a pair of lower level Klipsch floor standing speakers that are so good I specifically looked to Klipsch for my next speaker need, which happened to be for a pair of decent bookshelf speakers. I have been a Polk guy for speakers most of my life and have quite a few, but had taken a chance on the Klipsch floorstanding and had been blown away by how good they were. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Klipsch bookshelf speakers on this review. They are pretty good, but honestly I can't tell the difference between them and my best Polk bookshelf speakers, which are in the next room for a couple of hundred dollars less. If I hadn't gotten these Klipsch speakers on sale, I would be really disappointed and/or tempted to return.

Pros: Decent sound Look great

Cons: Not really better than lower cost speaker alternatives

Sweet Bookshelf Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very crisp highs and mids from these bookshelf's. They lack low bass but that's expected. I added a polk 12" sub and am very pleased with the result.

Pros: Very efficient speakers, can be used with lower power amps and still play loud and accurate.

Cons: Can't really think of any.

Klipsch RB-61 II win A-B comparisons

Written By DennisM, Pocatello, ID on Saturday, July 26, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before purchasing these speakers, I had the opportunity to do comparison listening at a (semi) local electronics store. In the size and price range for the Klipsch RB-61 II bookshelf speakers, there were no others that sounded nearly as good -- crisp, distinct highs coupled with excellent (for the size) bass response made them the easy pick for me.

Pros: Excellent response throughout the sound spectrum. Great price for the quality of the speakers.

Cons: None so far (after one month of ownership).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have heard of Klipsch speakers for many years but never owned any until now. I am surprised and pleased with these speakers. Clarity and response are strong features of this product. I am so impressed with them that I am now considering replacing other speakers in my system with Klipsch speakers. Enough said.

Small with a big sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to put in the office because they were small and I had an older lower power receiver to drive them. They worked perfectly and the sound is great, just like their big brothers RB-81 II in the other room.

Pros: Sounds great, easy to install with the binding posts

Cons: None

I bought these and they are hooked up to Sony STR-DN1040 and RC-62 II center and RB-41 II, SW-110 sub. Great sound and can feel all the sub vibration with a big thump while watching action movies.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: NONE

Great Speaker, But?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a 5 star bookshelf speaker sound wise... I can't believe the amount of detail that I'm hearing. They are capable of playing very loud too. The speakers do lack a little in the lows but that is to be expected with any bookshelf speaker, I rounded out the bottom end with an inexpensive Dayton branded 12" sub-woofer, while I'm not a bass above everything person I grew up in the late 60's to 70's with massive 3 way speakers, bookshelf speakers alone will never compete fully with them without help on the low end as they say there is no replacement for displacement. One thing I do not understand is why Klipsch would put such a cheap speaker on such a fine speaker nor do I really understand for the plastic front panel, It cheapens the look and feel of such a fine speaker. That said for the 400 bucks I paid for the cherry version can't be beat for detailed sound.

Pros: Top quality 5 star sound and at 400 for the cherry an absolute bargain.

Cons: Can't get 12"-15" big speaker sound/lows/fullness from a 6" woofer (can't be helped). Cheap plastic look speaker front, very cheap plastic speaker grill, reminds me of something that you might find on a budget computer speaker for under 20 bucks.

Good sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound great as my side surrounds. I wanted directional speakers with front baffle so I could place on a shelf against the wall.. Movies sound great. I also have a pair of subwoofers and the sound is incredible. The surround sound and a 65 inch screen is like being at an IMAX theater. I'm happy with the set up.

Pros: Price and size

Cons: Nothing

They can fill a larger room with full sound

Written By mradmen, Sycamore IL on Thursday, March 20, 2014

I have a larger room 20x20 that has 2 story ceilings and opens into a foyer and dining room. I debated if anything smaller than the RB61 could effectively fill that space with not only volume but quality of sound (music). I was going to try the RB51 or RB41 to keep the speakers small and unobtrusive but after some time decided a little bigger would be better. I think these were a good choice because they have no problem filling such a large space with quality sound. I was hoping they could produce enough bass that no sub would be needed but I have found I still need a sub. Interestingly the louder you play these the better the bass is. At low conversational volume levels I find I need more bass than these produce. They don't need much assistance so I put a Polk SW111 8 inch sub turned up about half way with the cross over maxed out in the corner and it compliments the RB61 well.

Pros: Relatively small (compared to a tower) with capability to fill a larger room with sound.

Cons: A little thin (meaning not enough bass) sounding at lower volume levels but the what does come out sounds very clean and detailed.

Great speakers at a good cost!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent value priced speakers. They're not at all tinny at the high frequencies and does a very good job with the bass range. I have a Polk sub, but if you're on a budget, these speakers do a more than adequate job with all but the very lowest frequencies.

Klipsch Reference RB-61 II Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers were added to make a second surround set up (in room w/fireplace) as left and right front channels. Paired with klipsch Reference RC- 42 II center channel. Rear channels are a pair of Klipsch Heresy's from '84 still going strong. Total new front set-up did not shine until I added a subwoofer. Very happy with new set-up, sound with Klipsch is awesome!!

Pros: Crisp, clear sound.

Cons: None yet.

I popped in one of my all time favorite jazz musicians, Bob James and was thrilled how the sound of the piano filled my 16x20 foot family room. These speakers are paired with an older model Denon receiver, AVR-3600 and I each time I listen to music Iit feels like the musicians are performing in front of me. Great speakers. I've always been a Klipsch fan.

Cons: None

Sweet highs, and midrange makes these even give the RB-81s a run for their money! Whether for the tv, movies, CD or SACD they sound remarkable but plan for a sub with these for the rich bass. The imaging will not disappoint!

Pros: Sweet highs, midrange, and imaging.

Cons: You do need a sub for the low end, but that is to be expected.

I am using these speakers with a Klipsch RW-1211 sub, with all powered by a Denon AVRX 2000. They work well together producing a big system sound. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and it was a very good experience.

Pros: Great sound, quality construction.

Cons: On the larger side for a bookshelf speaker. That said, mine are in a bookshelf, sounding on the larger side too.

Excellent speakers. I bought these to pair with a 2 channel integrated amp and an Apple TV to stream music. They sound great, plenty of bass and very clear sound with all types of music. They sound bigger than they are, the cherry finish looks great and Crutchfield's free shipping had them to me in 3 business days.

Pros: Great price, great sound, free shipping.

Cons: None.

Klipsch Reference speakers

Written By Sue, Natick, MA on Monday, January 13, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had Klipsch speakers years ago and loved them. These bookshelf speakers have met all of my expectations. I have a small living room and wanted speakers for TV, DVDs, streaming, music, and radio. They are great. Clear, warm sound, with plenty of low range for my uses. At first I wondered about the need for a subwoofer, but after adjusting the ranges through the Onkyo receiver (also a great buy) I have balanced, full sound. The living room is open to the kitchen, and the speakers can handle low volume and high volume uses while maintaining clarity. I recommend them as great bookshelf speakers. Would also be great as part of a multi-speaker system.

Pros: Clarity, depth, and range of sound in bookshelf-size speakers.

Cons: If you want room-vibrating bass, add a subwoofer.
