Our take on the Klipsch Reference Series RF-52

Experience the movie theater in your home theater

Music and movie fans will find a lot to like in the Klipsch® RF-52. This slender floor-standing speaker couples advanced technology with solid construction for powerful sonic performance, then wraps it all up in a sleek, elegant design.

Lifestyle shot

Horn technology for dynamic performance

Grille off shot

The RF-52 uses a horn-loaded tweeter. A flared opening in the enclosure projects high frequencies toward your listening area and prevents sound waves from simply spilling out in all directions. It's the same principle that makes your voice easier to hear when you cup your hands around your mouth. This horn design brings out details in everything you listen to, while reducing reflections that can color the sound. The horn also improves dynamics and efficiency, for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech construction

The RF-52's dual woofers dish out smooth midrange and articulate, well-defined bass. Klipsch makes the woofer cones out of anodized aluminum, so they're strong yet lightweight. A rigid cabinet with resonance-fighting internal bracing houses both the woofers and the tweeter. It all adds up to remarkably accurate reproduction of all your music and movies.

Build a complete Klipsch system

Use a pair of RF-52s with a subwoofer for a great-sounding stereo system. Or, team them with other Reference Series speakers for high-impact home theater.

Recommended center channel speaker: Klipsch RC-52.
Recommended surround speakers: Klipsch RS-42.
Recommended subwoofer: Klipsch RW-10d.

Overview: The Klipsch Reference Series RF-52 floor-standing loudspeaker delivers high-performance sound using Klipsch's advanced technologies and world-class materials. Driver Technology

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-52 features a professional-grade 1.0-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a large ceramic motor structure to provide a unique combination of precision, clarity and effortless power.

Dual Woofers: The dual 5.25-inch woofers of the RF-52 feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 5.25-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-52 features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

    Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 5.25-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.0" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features a single rear-firing port. The RF-52's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and a single rear-firing port to eliminate turbulence noise. An increased baffle ribbing in the lower panel and around the horn mouth dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a Black Ash wood-grain vinyl.

Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

    Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-52 feature four integrated feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The  Reference RF-52 also comes supplied with a set carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inches to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's integrated feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

    • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind  it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
    • A pair of RF-52 loudspeakers should be equal distance from the floor and the wall behind them. It can also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

    The Right Choice

Written By Bob, Carbondale, IL on Tuesday, July 06, 2010

I went blind on this model KLipsch and I was right...they are awesome and compliment my new Denon AVR 1910 and the Sony ES1000 Blue Ray perfectly. I think you could spend 3 to 4 times the money for "better" speakers and not realize a difference. The balance is perfect. One speaker was short a carpet spike....Crutchfield had one to me in 2 days! The service is awesome, and some great prices usually with free shipping. No wonder this speaker is a customer fav....buy it!

    Outstanding performance for the money

Written By Jaison, Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, April 04, 2009

I started building a home theatre system from scratch from the tv stand to the surround speakers. After spending couple months researching speakers from multiple websites and online reviews, I picked the RF-52 speakers and the matching speakers to complete a 7.1 surround sound system. I use these speakers every weekend to watch movies as well as music. There are more powerful versions of the Reference series but this works fine. If you build a complete matching system, it is very expensive compared to home theatre in a box setups. Being very picky about specs and sound quality, the Reference series of Klipsch was the way to go. They do make a cheaper version for department stores but to experience the 7.1 sound with my Blue ray, these are great. Don't hesitate to get these and seems these are shown as customer favorite as well.

    Klipsch Reference Series RF-52

Written By Timothy, Albany, NY on Saturday, March 21, 2009

I was forced to downsize my reference system and picked up the RF52's as a replacement to my previous $12k reference speakers. I was not expecting much, in fact I was planning on replacing them very rapidly, as soon as my things turned around. Now that I've had these for a few weeks and they have broke in quite a bit I am very impressed. They are not as good as my old speakers, I won't argue that, but they have no right being as good as they are for the price. They are not forward or bright, nor are they too relaxed or fatiguing, they have the happy medium of being lively, yet not offensive. They sound much bigger then they really are and produce MUCH better bass then I was anticipating, factor in the price and these speakers are a steal! I have no plans of replacing them, in fact I plan on buying more, enough to complete a 7.1 system. If the rating system was 1-10 instead of 1-5, I would have given them a 9, when you factor in what you are getting it represents an unbelievable value, but I don't think they are 10/10 or 5/5 great, next to nothing is. If you are putting a system together and these are in your budget I cannot recommend them highly enough.

    Full, rich sound

Written By Walt, Tuscaloosa, AL on Monday, March 16, 2009

The Klipsch RF-52 speakers produce an amazingly full, rich sound, especially at mid-level volumes where we usually listen to music to unwind and relax in the evenings. Female vocals are especially clear and distict. At low volumes (when music serves as a background for conversation or reading), the richness of the sound fades a bit, but this is a general issue for all speakers we have heard, including those that are much more expensive. We checked into several other alternatives before purchasing the Klipsch speakers, and are very happy with our selection. We are discovering qualities in some singers' voices that we didn't know were there -- Diana Krall (with Ray Charles) and Madeleine Peyroux ("I'm all right") for example. My only real issue with all speakers available in this price range is the plastic woodgrain cabinetry. It would be nice if the manufacturers offered a real polished wood cabinet that looks great next to a good quality equipment cabinet.

    Klipsch Reference Series RF-52

Written By Dan, Georgia on Friday, February 27, 2009

I bought these speakers a couple of months ago and I can say that I am totally satisfied. Klipsch lives up to its name and produces a very clear mid-high range sound, but one that isn't too harsh. The two woofers produce a decent amount of bass that is powerful in its own right. The sound from these speakers is very clear and directional. If you aim the speakers away from you, you will def notice a difference and the clarity and precision of the highs produced by the horn tweeter. This isn't a bad thing (not sure why you would want to point your speakers away from you anyway). Just stating that the sound is directed as opposed to other speakers such as Bose systems that produce a non-directional sound. I am slowly putting together the RF-52 system. Right now, I only have these two floorstanders and can't wait to invest in the subwoofer. Coupled with the sub, the system should have that deep punch that I'm looking for! I would defintely recommend these speakers to anyone who is looking for a great quality speaker that won't break the bank.
