Our take on the Klipsch Reference RF-52 II

by Kristen Schaub
Klipsch

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

A great balance of performance and value

Klipsch® tower speakers get rave reviews from our customers, who often seem surprised at the level of performance they're getting for the price. So we're excited about the slender new RF-52 II, which offers up dynamic, full-bodied sound that makes it ideal for small- to medium-sized rooms. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. Pick up a pair for stereo music, or use them as your front left and right speakers in a home theater setup.

Grille off

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RF-52 II uses newly machined, light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smoother mids and tighter bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones helps to dampen unwanted vibrations and reduce distortion, while integrated dustcaps add stability. The RF-52 II also has dual five-way binding posts, giving you the option to bi-amp or bi-wire this speaker for even better performance. And the rigid, braced cabinet comes in a beautiful woodgrain vinyl finish.

Check out the rest of our Klipsch lineup, and build a complete Reference Series II home theater or stereo speaker system. And don't forget to add a Klipsch subwoofer for high-impact bass.

Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RF-52 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RF-52 II is able to fill medium to large rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-52 II features a professional-grade 1.0-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Dual Woofers: The dual 5.25-inch woofers of the RF-52 II feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 5.25-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-52 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 5.25-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.0" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features a single rear-firing port. The RF-52 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and a rear-firing port to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and dual woofers dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with either a Black Ash or Cherry wood-grain vinyl.

Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-52 II feature two integrated front-feet and two stabilizer rear-feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The Reference RF-52 II also comes supplied with a set of carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inch to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

  • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
  • A pair of RF-52 II loudspeakers should be equal distance from the wall behind them. It also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love these speakers. For the price they are a super upgrade for my surround sound. I bought one as a. "Scratch and dent" special but it looks brand new. It was missing a machine screw for one of the feet but Crutchfield had it to me in just, a couple of days. Super customer service!

OK speakers

Written By JP, WV on Wednesday, August 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace a pair of modified Pioneer HPM 100 speakers, circa 1978, thinking that these "modern" speakers would sound better. I returned the speakers to Crutchfield, after a couple of weeks of A/B comparing with the HPM"s. To my ears, the RF 52's sounded too bright and irritating, with bloated, unnatural bass. I tested these with a variety of amps/receivers including a vitnage Marantz, Onkyo and Pioneer and also a modern Yamaha and Onkyo. The speakers sounded just OK, with the vintage Onkyo and Pioneer and not good with the rest. Other than efficiency, the HPM's bested the Klipsch, to my ears in all other catagories.
Pros:
Nice to look at
Cons:
Not so nice to listen to

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First time buyer with Crutchfield, Received the product within 4 days without any damage. Good service as well and received thank you card from them. I connected to my pioneer receiver 2 channel disconnecting all 7 channel, This speaker blew everything, awesome speaker. I now love listening music through this speakers. No need of subwoofer, I noticed very clarity in sound and fills the room. I'm planning to buy Emotiva UPA 200 to get more out of these speakers.
Cons:
Quality of finish of the cabinet was little poor and would not expect great as these are made from China.

Fantastic

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went from Infinity R162's to these Klipsch. The sound is now much fuller and richer. There is more than enough bass to not need a sub. They are a bit smaller than my RF 82's but that actually works well in the room they are in. I highly recommend these and the Crutchfield service was excellent as usual. I ordered these on a SUN and got them on TUE.
Pros:
Full rich sound. No real break in required from my point of view. Enough bass I did not need a sub.
Cons:
I would have liked the cable terminals to be more accessible. Size is good but they still are furniture.

I have these speakers powered by a 20 year old Nakamichi amp (100 watts?). My ears find a definite improvement after a 24 hour break-in period. Initially the sound was a little on the "bright" side. After break-in the sound seems neutral and clear.
Pros:
efficient ( clean and clear at any volume level) neutral good value
Cons:
needs a "break-in" period

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought I was happy with my 1970's vintage Sasui Speakers that stalling work and look great. I recently upgraded my Kenwood amp to a Yamaha RXV676 and was happy with that upgrade. A couple weeks later I bought the Klipsch RF-52 speakers to go with the upgraded amp....WOW... I was amazed at the sound clarity that I had been missing out on. I am very happy with these speakers and will have no problem recommending them to anyone who asks.

purchased the cherry wood on special paired with a harmon kardon hk 3490, 125 rms/ch. back in the day (70's and 80's), I had systems that today would sell for $10,000 + and consider myself a semi-stereophile. bottom line, if you are looking at speakers in this $ range, look no further. amazing clarity, tight low end, very "up front, extremely efficient". I'm convinced there is no way you could buy speakers for under $600 that would sound this good. nuff said !

These were to start a 5.1 setup. We have them hooked up to a Marantz NR1403 and will use them for both TV/movie and music audio. They have a very clean, crisp sound with plenty of volume for our 350 sq/ft room. Also, very acceptable (clean) bass without a sub.
Pros:
Very good sound for the price. Small foot print. Classic styling.

I bought these to replace my ancient Advent pair that disintegrated suddenly. With little options locally to listen and compare, I read many reviews and decided on these. With such small drivers I was concerned there might be inadequate bass, not that I need a huge thump, just some presence. These give me exactly what I want. I'm very satisfied.....
Pros:
very even frequency range delivered clean simple appearance fair price
Cons:

So far, no complaints. Am happy with the quality of sound. Still want to add a separate subwoofer for a little more bass in the future but these speakers meet my demands, especially considering the price. I am running an NAD amplifier and listen primarily to blues LP's and would recommend these speakers to those considering them.
Pros:
Nice look. Small footprint. Quality sound at an affordable price. Crutchfield customer service has been fantastic.

An excellent speaker for the price with good, clear highs and mid-range, and yet just enough bass without being overbearing. Very clear sound and quality built. Plus the cherry finish is hard to find as I am a vintage audio collector and these speakers go so much better than the boring plain black finish found on so many speakers today.
Pros:
Nice look and cherry finish, great grille cover, fantastic sound for the price range.
Cons:
Rear feet assembly on towers could be a little easier to install. Somewhat difficult to attach properly.

I was surprised by how big these actually are. These get a little loud in my small room. The 82's would be extemely loud compared to these. If anybody is worried about the cherry finish it looks great and the wood grain is not identical.
Pros:
Very clear audio and plenty of volume. Plenty of bass. Look amazing with grill on or off.
Cons:
None! Everything as specified.

Incredible speakers

Written By Derek, Middletown nj on Saturday, October 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally had my heart set on the definitive technology 8040 surround setup. After listening to them in a local best buy, they sounded very "muddy". The rf52ii's are crisp and clear and have the low end. I turn off my sw112 sub off and the klipsch rf52ii's sounded great by themselves. Powered by a denon e400 these speakers create a musical symphony in my living room! Crutchfield is very knowledgeable and the team here is great! Buy these speakers you won't be disapointed def techs are over rated!!!
Pros:
Crisp and clear. Life like tones. Low end hit pretty good, surprised after hearing that they were very "bright".
Cons:
Stabilizer feet don't have to be mounted on sides. Speakers cabinet is smaller then 10" more like 7 1/2, so it could fit in tighter places

Great Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to use as mains in a surround system along with an RC-42II center and RB-41II surrounds. I never listen to stereo anymore so my comments apply to the full system. These speakers provide a wide, natural presentation with clear highs and deep, satisfying bass. Sounds image seamlessly all around the room with no change in pitch or texture, a big benefit of matched speakers. The towers have enough low end to play without a sub, although I use one most of the time. I am very happy with these speakers. The speakers arrived in perfect shape and a day earlier than promised. Incidentally, I got the cherry finish, and it's darker than it appears in the photos. Looks great IMO.
Pros:
Good looks, great sound
Cons:
None so far

Wow and more wow

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are my first floor standing speakers and I am thrilled beyond words. I am primarily a Bowers & Wilkins guy but I auditioned some Klipsch speakers several years ago and was impressed and said if I was ever in the market for some new speakers I would give them a try. The sound is spectacular with clear highs, detailed midrange and throaty bass with just the right tightness. These are very sensitive which gives me a lot of options going forward. Currently I have these paired with a NAD C320BEE and a Yamaha CD-S1000 that I got yesterday. I am using Kimber Kable 8VS, externally biwired and Audioquest Golden Gate interconnects. The NAD never gelled with my B&W 601 S3's but work great with the RF52II speakers. I barely turn the volume control and I am blown away. I keep it around 7 o'clock. These babies perform like speakers 3 times the price. My only gripe is that they used plastic knobs on the binding posts which makes a tight connection when using heavy cables very tricky. Also the rear feet supports need to be a solid piece going all the way across instead on two screw on parts. I suppose it is a cost saving measure and is common for the price but it should not be.
Pros:
Cabinet Quality Audiophile Level Sound Bass Response
Cons:
Binding Post Knobs Two Piece Rear Feet

Late impressions

Written By NewTekBuzz, MI on Tuesday, August 20, 2013

It was not until my sub died (Velodyne DLS 4000R) that I truly appreciated these speakers. Once I startled having trouble with my sub I switched these over to full bandwidth along with the matching center channel. I cannot believe the full sound that I am getting from these 5 1/4's, very impressed. These will most likely become my surround speakers at some point and Klipsch RF-82's will take their place!
Pros:
Build quality, great full sound, style
Cons:
None

These would be great speakers for twice the price, maybe 3 times. I've got them bi-amped with a Yamaha A-S500 pushing. I did get a chance to push them with an Adcom 555 @ 2x 200W and they handled them both with no problem. After 50 hours burn, they have gotten warmer but retain their crisp highs. I can hear the hi-hat work as clear as a bell. I have to try them single amped tho. I did for 20 hours and I seem to remember the bass/mid xover to be smoother. I would have given 4 1/2 stars if I could because nothing is 5 stars at this price, but I rounded up. Before these I was using Adcom components to drive 901s. Big difference in tone and color. I don't find any lack of bass. Unless your listening to pedal tones from a pipe, I can't believe these won't give you tight, well represented bass. BTW, I haven't tried them with my pipe recordings yet, only B-3 and they didn't miss a note.
Pros:
Excellent speakers for the $$$. Crisp clear highs, yet warm and not harsh. Mids are well represented. Bass is tight, and plenty of it.
Cons:
Perhaps mid/bass xover less smooth bi-amped than single-amped. Will test and report.

Love 'em

Written By FallLineBuilders, Way Up State NY on Wednesday, May 22, 2013

My rf-52s are being pushed with a yamaha rs500 with a yamaha cd-c600 CD player with usb input. (Both awesome for the $$$. 2 channel music only in a 12x14 room) the mids and highs will bring tears to your eyes. The clarity and sheer volume of the sound is just wicked. I have around 100 hours on them and they really are mellowing out...getting warmer and warmer sounding. Although at med-med/loud volumes I think they are the best value on the market, if you really want to crank they need a sub. The lows just don't round out the sound at high volume....get the sw-308 and I think it's the best music setup for a small to medium sized room for the dollar out there.
Pros:
Clarity, efficiency, look great
Cons:
Lows frequencies at volume... But they have 5" woofers....what can you really expect, right?

Klipsch Reference RF-52 II

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for surround sound and audio playback in a room 12' X 18' .. I am using 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. Driven by a new Integra 50.3 which is rated at 135W RMS @ 8 ohm resistance. The Sound is incredible!!

Although these speakers are fairly efficient I would not attempt to drive them with any less power. At lower listening levels there is adequate power reserve to step up and fill in audio spikes, giving these speakers nice dynamic range and the ability to create a sonic sound stage that is very life like at lower to mid listening levels. Your ability to hear all the different pieces in the music at the same time is assured .. great clarity and good realism .. turn up the volume and they will rock you no doubt, but like any true reference speaker they really show their stuff at more moderate levels.

If you are demanding true full range reference sound plan on adding a Sub. This is not a knock on these speakers, just a reality for any speaker without a designated low frequency driver of size. I nice tight 8 inch sub will fill in all the lower octave stuff to complete a true reference sound stage.

Build quality is excellent and although they are not big enough to look Impressive, they do look very classy, just like they sound. I highly recommend theses speakers to anyone who needs to listen to hours of music and hear what's really going on, without their ears ringing for hours after their done.
Pros:
Quality, clarity, realistic, non fatiguing.
Cons:
I was not disappointed in any way.

It's been a while since I was in the market for speakers but I recognized and respected the Klipsch name. I was not disappointed. I am using the speakers in a tube system mostly playing vinyl and they are warm and transparent, not the least bit harsh. Great looking and well constructed. A+
Pros:
Attractive and acoustically superb.

Aesthetically beautiful, Acoustically sublime. I question as to whether you're going to find a better floor-standing speaker in this price range. Makes for a solid forefront around which to build a superb surround system whether your endpoint is the enjoyment of music or cinema. Just give it a try and compare it to others of the same class.

"Reference" is Right

Written By Marcus, Central NJ on Wednesday, April 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful speakers. I have them hooked up to a NAD amp and use them mostly for music, everything from trip hop (where they clearly reproduce beautiful female vocals) to hardcore punk (where they are as harsh and aggressive as a basement punk show). Was very excited to have them for the NCAA basketball playoffs; the sneakers screech like I was courtside.
Pros:
Great value; best speakers I've heard for the price
Cons:
Rear port so you need at least a foot or two between the rear of the speaker and the wall

Crisp Highs

Written By bg, San Antonio on Monday, April 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The horn tweeter will generate crisp, clear, high frequencies that I do not hear in other dome tweeters which I appreciate in music and movies. However, I have had to give my ears a rest one time after the horn tweeters actually caused an uncomfortable feeling in my ears at moderately high volume.
Pros:
Excellant clarity with high frequencies
Cons:
May cause ear fatigue at moderately high volumes

After searching around, I decided on these speakers and was not disappointed. Bought mainly for listening to vinyl, but also work great for TV. I'm hearing more sounds than before and with a beautiful crispness. When watching hockey, I hear everything that one would hear at the rink. Excellent buy.

Crisp sound, good looking design

Outstanding sound--I skipped a subwoofer to save some money and the low end is really good just with these Klipsch tower speakers. Very solid and beautiful cherry cabinets, and for some reason (good for us customers) these cherry cabinets are on sale and less than the all black ones! You can't beat these speakers.
Pros:
Great sound, very solid pieces of furniture.
Cons:
These tower speakers are fairly big, and thye are heavy (for me that means stable). For some these comments may be negatives.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the RF-52 II's as my main speaker set replacing a small set of Boston Acoustic surround sound speakers. The application was primarily for music - rock, jazz, bluegrass, acoustic. Movies and TV were secondary uses. These speakers sound awesome and were easy to set up. I am driving them with an Onkyo TX 8050 stereo reciever and I was concerned that it provided insufficient power for the RF-52's. I am very happy with the set up as I can listen at all levels and the set performs great. So far I am pleased with these speakers and would recommend them to others.
Pros:
Great sound, easy set up, great packaging, they look very good too in cherry
Cons:
None

Small Speakers With Big Sound

Written By Ralph, Middleboro MA on Thursday, March 07, 2013

Well having just got these speakers yesterday i can say with music you do not need a subwoofer , well i dont the bass is very low , almost to much for me , but i placed them about 20 inches from the back wall so they do not sound boomy. i was told by someone to break them in slowly with low music so thats what ive been doing. I have not played them loud yet but at low to medium vol they sound good , im sure they will sound great at high vol , but im more concerned by how they preform at a medium vol . I probably should have waited to do this review , and let the speakers fully break in , but i was so happy with the sound right out the gate, the first thing i listened to was an album by John Coltrane (Lush Life) and as soon as i pressed play an heard that saxophone for the first time through these speakers i instantly noticed the difference in SQ in comparison to my infinity alpha 40 towers that i have been listening to for the last 10 years , one thing i dont like is the cabinets they look very cheap and are not real wood and the overall speaker is very small in size , i wish they were about an inch or 2 taller and wider , but it all comes down to the sound and to me they sound good , 75 watts seems to be more than enough to drive these guys.
Pros:
Good sound
Cons:
cheap looking cabinets

Great sound, great price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade my 6.1 setup which utilized the Klipsch Reference RSX series satellite speakers as my fronts (all I could afford at the time 8 years ago). I was glad the Reference series was still around to match my other speakers, and based on my receiver output, at 100 watts per channel, the RF-52 was the best match. I was waiting for a nice sale, and found this at a great price. Saved $200 on the pair compared to the all black set. Plus no tax or shipping. I'm not qualified to judge the sound like a true audiophile, but I just think they sound fantastic. They are in a "home theater setting" family room that opens up in back to our kitchen, not the best acoustic set up, but they still sound awesome. Also Crutchfield and Klipsch recommended that I get a new center channel, but based on the specs, there would not have been a difference; so I didn't get it and saved around $250. Haven't had any problems without the new center. As usual, my buying experience here has been top-notch. Thank you Crutchfield!
Pros:
Great sound, sale price
Cons:
none

I listened to several very high end products that were out side my price range so I bought these. I'm really happy with the sound even after hearing high end models. They say these sound better after break in. Well that's icing on the cake because as they are they sound really good out of the box. Just a great product at a good price. On top of that Crutchfield service and staff get five stars!
Pros:
Excellent sound, great value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an amazing speaker!!! Awesome bass, crisp Highs, mids are great as well. They are packed very very well for shipping, they had to come all the way to Germany for me. One note is they are just under 7" wide, the 10" noted on the overview is how wide with the rear stabilizer feet attached...Overall this is a great speaker for the price...Don't be fooled on the size...when you take them out of the box they are not bulky at all...but they pack a really big punch...I recommend a pair of these to anyone
Pros:
All stated above
Cons:
Just beware to be around when you expect them to arrive at your door...They are shipped in the manufactures box...don't want any thieves taking your new pride and joys..

Absolutely the best speakers for the price range. Klipsch is the most efficient speaker. Meaning at the same volume level they will sound louder then most other speakers. Paired up with a great receiver a nice bluray/cd player your music will come to life. A few times in stereo mode i've had to get up to make sure it wasn't the center channel on. They sound absolutely fantastic. I recommend them to anyone and everyone to at least try out.

Have had these speakers for 4 months now. The sounds are really starting to crispin up and bass is getting louder and crisp, which is how i like it. You now you look through this website and see all these expensive speakers and wonder will i get the same sound from a $400 spkr than a $2000 one. The answer is yes. These speakers sound great and looks great with those copper woffers starin at you. I'm very pleased. I have the RF52II bi-wired, RC52II, RPW10sub, and the RS42II surrounds. Powered by Denon 2311CI, had the AVR-391didnt get the job done. Room size is big and open 15' ceiling 17' wide and 35' long. Fills the house with good sound. Thanks Crutchfield.
