Klipsch Reference RF-7 II

Experience all the power and emotion behind your favorite movies, concert discs, and music CDs with the Klipsch® RF-7 II. It's the flagship speaker of the Reference Series II line, and it uses patented Klipsch technology to deliver rich, dynamic sound with sparkling highs and thrilling, full-bodied bass. Add a pair to the RC-64 II center channel speaker to create a seamless, powerful front soundstage for your home theater that'll put you in the middle of your movie every single time. And this speaker looks as good as it sounds: it comes in a stunning, furniture-grade wood grain veneer.

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RF-7 II uses two light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smooth mids and tight bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones help to dampen unwanted vibrations and reduce distortion, while integrated dustcaps add stability. The RF-7 II also has dual five-way binding posts, giving you the option to bi-amp or bi-wire this speaker for the best possible performance.

Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RF-7 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RF-7 II is able to fill large rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-7 II features a professional-grade 1.75-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.75-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Dual Woofers: The dual 10.0-inch woofers of the RF-7 II feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 10.0-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-7 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 10.0-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.75" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features dual rear-firing ports. The RF-7 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and dual rear-firing ports to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and dual woofers dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features an MDF cabinet finished with a beautiful furniture-grade wood veneer.

Detachable Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-7 II feature two integrated front-feet and two stabilizer rear-feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The Reference RF-7 II also comes supplied with a set of carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inch to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

  • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
  • A pair of RF-7 II loudspeakers should be equal distance from the wall behind them. It also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

Q
I have a YAMAHA MX-1000u amp rated @260 wpc @8 ohms; 10 over the RF-7's 250. I don't plan on running these flat-out/max volume... BUT, will this be an issue at "higher" volumes?

A
Absolutely positively no problem at all. It's a non issue. The RF-7' is a very inefficient speaker. Mine are powered by a McIntosh MC7270 with no issues at all.

Your ears are you best friend in this case. When the music starts to sound harsh and unnatural you have approached the limits of your speakers and the ability of your amp to produce clean power. Turn it down you don't need to impress the neighbors it only needs to be loud enough to enjoy it in your home.Enter
john  Mar 14, 2018
A
You likely won't be running at Max volume continuous. The speakers are rated at 250 continuous, 1000 peak. Just don't turn it up all the way.
"daniel  Mar 14, 2018
A
The rule of thumb (as i understand it) is you purchase an amp that produces 2x the amount of wattage your speakers can handle at 8 ohms. The rf-7II's can handle 250 watts continuous with peaks up to 1250 watts. Your amp is under powering them by 50%. If you are concerned about overloading, then you can always install a fuse between your amp and speakers. Also, keep in mind there is "dirty" wattage...meaning sound deteriorates as volume increases. Therefore, be mindful of your bass/trebble settings. Hope this helps.
jay  Mar 14, 2018
A
Not at all. These speakers can handle 300 watts at 8 ohms. Remember though if you turn the volume up do not exceed a limit where the speakers are starting to distort. Back off a little at this point and if the music sounds good its OK

I have Classe CAP-80, my room is 25x30, I cannot go above half volume, I don't know if this helpful
mehmet  Mar 14, 2018

If your amp is 260 watts per channel and you are using only 2 channels (stereo L/R) then you are only pushing 130 watts per speaker. They will be fine.
steven  Mar 14, 2018
A
Not at all they will play very loud.
jason  Mar 14, 2018
A
Nice amp choice. And no it will be fine. Where the RF7ii are so efficient you'll have headroom. So the 101 dB sensitivity will ensure you will not use all the watts up. And you have to worry about clipping since you have an amp that's just cruising with ease. Hope this helps
darion  Mar 14, 2018
Q
The max power is 250W RMS, but what is the minimum power requirement? I was planning on using these with a tube amp. Currently, I have a amp that pushes 17.5 WPC (push/pull), but I may eventually get a single ended amp that pushes 6-8 WPC. The 101db efficiency rating is perfect, but I know that there are still minimum power requirements. Thank you!

A
The speakers put out 101db at 1 watt, which is fairly loud. When the volume is turned down to normal listening levels, you are probably near 0.1 watt
"daniel  Mar 14, 2018
A
Sorry Roland, I don`t know the min. watt requirement for these speakers. My current system pushes 125 watts. Try asking one of the Crutchfield advisers.

Well I've been reading and auditioning for a mth, reading trying to find more info. On my last pair of speakers for my life. I already own RF 35 s they sound just wow, but my reciever is to powerful. I didn't want the Klipche because of no style just a big box. But if the sound is better, is it better and in what way ? Vs Martin Logans Motion 60 Xt? Help thxs

Get them in Cherry, the black is very Plain, as for the sound , I listen to mostly jazz and the horns are fantastic , the more modern jazz has more bass and they handle it with ease, no sub needed , I run a 375bee and could make you deaf with these RF 7s, clear quality at all sound levels, not much adjustment of the bass and treble

Is there a big audible difference between the RF-7 and RF-82ll?

I asked this question a year ago and now after purchasing the klipsch RF 7 ll I got my answer. The sound is so much better than the RF 82 ll that I own. I'm so satisfied with the 7's that these will be the last tower speakers I purchase.

Q
Playing these speakers through a Sonos wireless device the sound/volume level is much lower than when I play music through my turntable. Any idea why??
leslie  Jan 08, 2017

A
I had the same problem when using my Ipod. I am not familiar with the Sonos system but if your Sonos has a volume control on it turn it all the way up. Then control your music volume with your receiver or amp.
steven  Jan 09, 2017
A
Sorry no concrete idea, the only thing that comes to mind is possibly a latent delay between signals but thats outside my expertise. I'll ask around and see what I can come up with. Outside of that I love my RF-7s !
cedric  Jan 08, 2017
A
I`m not and expert just a customer, but I assume there is an amp involved between the turntable, Sonos, and the speakers. My guess is there is a preamp in your amp or turntable which would boost the signal for your amp giving you higher volume. It`s not the speaker. Hope that helps!
herbert n  Jan 08, 2017
A
You will need an outboard phono preamp if your turntable does not have one built in.

How do the Klipsch Reference 7-II's stand up to a pair of Bose 901's (series IV or later)?

A
the bose are watt hogs, klipsch rock out
tedric  Nov 09, 2015
A
The BOSE 901 series VI are the only version I can compare however the BOSE 901 units are less efficient, require an external equalizer, and are more prone to room interaction than the Klipsch Reference 7-II units. The dynamic range of the Klipsch is also significantly greater than the Bose. With that said it would be best for you to actually hear both in person and let your ears be the judge (using the same music source). I Find the efficiency and wide soundstage of the Klipsch units to be preferable.
richard  Nov 08, 2015

Sorry. I have no familiarity with the Bose speakers in order to compare.

I'm considering Klipsch rf7s or Bowers & Wilkins CM9 as front standing speakers for my home theater setup. Would primarily use them for movies and games besides music. As both the rf7s and CM9s fall in same price range as a pair it's quite a dilemma which one to shoot for as both holds strong reviews in terms of quality n sound stage. Though it's a matter of personal preference n quite subjective, would appreciate expert advise on this. As for music I mostly prefer house, pop, rock n orchestra. Which one is advised best? Thanks

Can't tell you any thing about the Bowers & Wilkins, so here what I think about the rf7s. They don't need much power to drive them with a sensitivity of 101 db. Bass is VERRY clean & tight. Kick drums sound like there right in the room. I like the horns on the tweeters because they disperse the highs better. You don't have to have the speaker pointed right at you. I've pushed these loud and hard and they handle them effortlessly. They sound just as good when played loud. Can feel the bass hit my chest hard. I like listening to Rock mostly. Hope this help you. Richard

I have not auditioned the B&W CM9 but after half a year of living with the Klipsch RF-7s I am pleased with the sound quality on a variety of music formats as well as the dynamics on movies. I purchased the RF-7s to replace a pair of Acoustic Research AR-9s and the sound stage and dynamics are significantly better with the RF-7s. Both Klipsch and B&W have been making quality speakers for many years and either will likely provide clean articulate sound. If you are looking for high dynamics with reasonable amplifier output I would lean toward the Klipsch Reference speakers.
richard  Aug 13, 2014
A
If you like loud, dynamic, clear sound from a speaker buy the rf711 but if you like smooth, clean, nothing to get excited about sound from a speaker buy the cm9. Home theater with the rf711,rf64c,rf42,three peach tree audio 220 amplifiers and two svs pc 13ultra subwoofers will stop you dead in your tracks on the search for the best home theater sound in this price range!!! Trust me and go for the gold!!!
