Prepare to be surrounded

High–definition movie soundtracks demand a high–performance surround speaker, and we're confident the RP-250S from Klipsch's Reference Premier Series is up to the task. After all, Klipsch knows a thing or two about creating exciting cinema sound. You'll find their speakers in movie theaters around the world (and in the homes of thousands of our satisfied customers).

Each Klipsch RP-250S surround speaker features two 5-1/4" woofers and two horn tweeters angled apart from each other. This smart design spreads ambient surround effects over a wide area, for a diffuse soundfield that completely envelops your listening room. It also allows this speaker to deliver great Klipsch sound even if you place it in less-than-ideal locations. Use a pair (or two) as your rear speakers for a perfectly voice-matched accompaniment to an all-Klipsch Reference Premiere Series surround sound setup.

The Reference Premiere Series difference

Never one to rest on its laurels, Klipsch has been busy refining and improving its designs to create loudspeakers that blow the doors off of its loyal followers' expectations. The new Reference Premiere Series builds on the acoustics and technologies of Klipsch's classic Reference Series, with important enhancements that provide an even more intense listening experience.

Hybrid Horn technology for dynamic performance

Klipsch RP-250S surround speaker

With its Hybrid Tractrix horns and Cerametallic woofers, the RP-250S is built to effortlessly deliver clear, powerful Klipsch sound.

Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Klipsch's newly designed Hybrid Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. Compared to previous Klipsch models, this horn design delivers a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals. Even the horn material itself has been upgraded to molded silicone rubber that helps decrease resonance for smoother, warmer highs.

High-tech woofer design

The RP-250S's dual 5-1/4" Cerametallic™ woofers dish out smooth midrange and articulate, well-defined bass. Klipsch makes its cones out of specially treated aluminum that's strong yet lightweight, to dampen and prevent distortion. With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave this woofer a newly developed titanium voice coil former that allows more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response.

Build a complete Klipsch system

Team a pair or two of RP-250S surrounds with other Klipsch Reference Premiere Series speakers to create a high-impact home theater system.

Features

Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): The Klipsch RP-250S delivers precise sonic detail through the careful positioning of two Tractrix Horn loaded titanium tweeters and two 5.25" woofers. By aligning the two horns at 90° with respect to each other, along with the two woofers, the RP-250S smoothly covers a 180° horizontal arc, allowing maximum placement flexibility. This unique Wide Dispersion Surround Technology delivers a new dimension of reality and convenience, and produces a smooth, seamless broad distribution of sound, which is the perfect vehicle for every surround format.

90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns: A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed molded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.

LTS Tweeters: Behind each Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

Cerametallic Woofers: The dual 5.25" woofers of the RP-250S surround loudspeaker feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The 5.25" woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: The Klipsch RP-250S surround speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies (1500Hz) offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.

Sealed MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch RP-250S employs an acoustic suspension enclosure for tight accurate bass. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.

Magnetic Grille: The surround loudspeaker features a removable magnetic low-diffraction grille which easily snaps into place over its polymer front baffle.

Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series RP-250S is equipped with sturdy binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Mounting Options: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series RP-250S offers flexibility when mounting the speaker.

  • Rubber Feet: The surround speaker comes supplied with four self-adhesive rubber feet so you can sit the speakers on a stand or shelf securely. The rubber feet add approximately 0.3125" to the height of the speaker.
  • Wall Mounting: The Klipsch surround speaker features a single keyhole slot on the back of the cabinet for wall-mounting the speaker without any additional wall-mount bracket (mounting screws not supplied). There is also a rear-panel 3/8" threaded insert for use with optional wall-mount brackets (sold separately). However, Crutchfield does not carry an optional wall-mount bracket to support this speaker.

Placement: The Klipsch Wide Dispersion Surround Technology surround speakers in a typical 5.1-channel system can be mounted to side or rear walls. It is recommended that the RSP-250S be mounted above the ear height of seated listeners (between 5'-7' above the floor).

Q
What is the difference between the RP250s and the RP502s, except for different year models? Are the RP502s worth the extra money?
tracy  Sep 10, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, Tracy. While both provide the same bi-polar design and features that fill your room with sound, the 502S is a slightly better speaker visually, with many internal improvements for much better sound compared to the 250S. It has a little higher frequency response, and also a wood grain vinyl finish that is scratch resistant as compared to the RP250S's brushed polymer veneer finish. It is really hard to ignore the massive sale on the 502S right now, so I certainly think they are worth the little bit extra to get a much nicer speaker!

Q
Can these be used as front heights?
tyler  Mar 07, 2023
1 answer
A
I see no reason why not, Tyler. If you want to mount these high on the wall above your TV, I see no reason why not. This is a great solution if you do not want to install in-ceiling speakers or use the Atmos toppers. This is similar to what I have in my own setup for front heights!

Q
Is this the price for each order pair?
charles  Aug 20, 2022

A
These speakers are sold individually. The price is per speaker.

Q
I bought a pair of these to use as surrounds in a 5.2.4 set-up. I had planned to use in-ceiling speakers for atmos effects but I'm reading that some of you are using them for Atmos effects in addtion to surrounds. Are you mounting them high on front and back or side walls or coming up with a way to mount them to your ceiling? Regarding Atmos, is there really much of a difference in effect than having say a 7.2 or 9.2 setup with good bass? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

A
Tim, I am using these as surround speakers in my setup and they are mounted at ear level in the rear and sides. I use the klipsch 500 SA's for the Atmos effect and have them mounted high, both front and rear.
ken  Jan 04, 2022
A
Hello there! Congrats on getting these pair which are one of my favorite speakers out there. They are BEST suited for back surrounds or side surrounds in a 7.2 or 7.2.4 and above configuration. Do not use them for height effects. They were not intended for that. Awesome speakers! Love mine! My set up is 7.2.4
william  Jan 03, 2022
A
I use RP 250 F as my rear surround sounds speakers. They work great for that purpose because you get rear sound in multi direction. To truly get Atmos you need a facing up speaker like the Klipsh 4-41S to bounce off the ceiling to give that Atmos affect. When we built your house in 2018 I added in-ceiling speakers to get the Atmos affect so I have a true 5.2.4 setup. 5 surrounds, 2 bass and 4 ceiling using a Denon In-Command series receiver calibrated to the room. In all honesty I can't tell if the ceiling speakers are on or not. My system indicates whether the program is in Atmos and I can't tell the difference because the rest of the speakers overwhelm the room.
mark  Jan 01, 2022
A
I bought 8 of these and place 2 front 2 back 2 on right and 2 own left, if you truly want surround sound you kinda need speakers to surround you wright , just had to throw that in. I placed my speakers all the way to my ceiling, spaced out equally they sound great but I also added six 5800 c ll klispch in the ceiling that really took it to the top ok enough of that . Happy New Years

Is the speaker cable recess deep enough for using small banana plugs without interferring with a wall mount?
robert  Feb 22, 2021

A
No, unless you find right angle wanna plugs (if these exist)
sam  Feb 23, 2021
A
Hello, unfortunately not. The connectors are flush with the back of the speaker.
joe  Feb 23, 2021
A
Do not use banana plugs, so I can't give a definitive answer.
nick  Feb 22, 2021
A
No. No reason to make that a deal breaker though.
gregory  Feb 22, 2021
A
I have them mounted flat against the wall using the integrated hanger and it is not, I do not run banana plugs on the speaker side of the wire. On the wall side however, using a combination of an Arlington LVU1W-1 recessed low voltage single gang bracket and Sewell "Strike" (low profile) banana plugs, I was able to use banana plugs on the wall connection side.
james  Feb 22, 2021
Q
Would these be able to work as Dolby atoms speakers? If I laid them flat on top of my L/R speakers, one side of these speakers would be facing the back wall and the other angled up toward the ceiling.

I couldn't disagree more with the person who said these will not work as atmos speakers. Few points to make here: First of all, I am using 4 of these as atmos speakers. I am also using 4 as surround. They are fantastic in both applications. It's all about placement and proper leveling/room correction. Biggest point here: I had 4 of the klipsch atmos branded RP-500SA and they were completely lackluster, underpowered and unable to deliver the effects needed, regardless of balancing and proper placement. These would be ideal to be hung as heights to deliver atmos, sure. I am using them as upfires and they're fantastic. Don't buy into the hype of atmos speakers alone, you can do much better if you're a bit creative.
benjamin  Feb 02, 2021
A
In my opinion considering these are bipole speakers they would be hard to localize their position. This is why they are good for surround speakers. They don't draw attention to themselves. This might increase the chance they don't stand out while being so low however I think you want to notice when the sound is supposed to be going over your head. I mounted mine on the wall high above me and it does pretty awesome ambience noises for atmos.
michael  Jan 09, 2021
A
Not at all. They project sound in a large area, which would not be the best for the up-firing Atmos. The sound will be very muddled at best. And up-firing Atmos isn't the best way to do Atmos in the first place. You'd be much better served installing something like the Klipsch CDT-5800-C II in your ceiling.
james  Jan 08, 2021
Q
Would this work in a corner as a single rear surround? Already have ceiling L/R side surround.
garret  Jan 04, 2021

A
It has 6 sides. In order to mount in a corner you would have to create something to mount it. The mount surface is flat about 4-5" long.

I currently am in the process of putting together my home theater, as I just bought my house. As it stands right now, I have a smaller living area, in which I am listening, and with this smaller area, I am utilizing a 5.2.2 setup with my RP-250S speakers in the rear position. Thus far, the signals that are sent to these speakers in the 5.2.2 speaker configuration, have really good sound. I honestly can say that, in my humble opinion, and without trying these as a middle surround scenario, you won't be disappointed. I think wherever you place these speakers, you do have to consider what kind of sound you want. If you are looking for base, tower/subs only, although I do utilize a pair of RP-160M speakers for my current front bookshelf speakers, which surprisingly have a heck of a punch. I am receiving a pair of RP-8000F speakers this weekend, which should top my system off nicely. The RP line of Klipsch has not been a disappointment to me in any way, so I'd say go for it, but also, try them out as a middle surround! Either way I think win, win!
james  Jan 04, 2021

john  Jan 02, 2021
A
I wouldn't think so.. How far away (laterally) will it be from you? If the forward facing side of the speaker (if you drew a line) passes in front of you, I'd say you're okay. I think that's the main concern. If you don't have rear surrounds, some setups actually prefer to have the surround speaker slightly behind you anyway..
tim  Jan 01, 2021
A
All I can advise is how I have the position these speakers in my system. My back speakers are about 5 feet in height and angle from the listening position at about 45 degrees. They rest approximately 4 feet from the listening position on either side Like you, my room presents challenges. To date, there appears to be no adverse effects for the back height speakers, and they work efficiently. Hope this alleviates any anxieties you might have regarding purchase.
nick  Jan 01, 2021

I us them as rear surround speakers and love the rang of sound they put out. I would not think that would be a problem at all. Call and talk to a representative. That do not preasure you at all and will help you with any questions. I had lane and you would have thought we new each other for ages. You definitely will not go wrong with these guys at all. Great knowledgeable people. If the representative can not give you a sound decision he will reach out to get you the answers you have.

What is the difference from RP-250S and the RP 402s?
maurice  Oct 21, 2020
2 answers
A
The 250s is 5 1/4 inch the 402s are 4 inch woofers and i believe different years i believe the 402s are 240s now
geoffrey  Oct 26, 2020
A
It might be easier to start with the difference between the RP-250S and the RP-240S, since they're of the same generation of Klipsch speakers. The RP-250S has 5.25" drivers and the RP-240S has 4" drivers, hence the 5 and 4 in the model names. When Klipsch refreshed the whole Reference Premiere lineup a year or two ago, they shuffled the numbers around. The RP-240S was replaced by the RP-402S, and the RP-250S was replaced by the RP-502S. Apart from some visual differences, the two generations are nearly identical. So to answer your question in one sentence, the RP-402S is a smaller version of the RP-250S with the latest Klipsch aesthetic.

henry  Sep 19, 2020
A
No, they can be used with any other speakers as long as they're connected to an amplifier/receiver. However the system will sound best when all speakers are matching, or at least have similar sensitivity and power, so i wouldn't recommend pairing them with speakers that are in a completely different 'class'.
jeff  Sep 17, 2020
A
No I would think you could use them with any speaker system

Q
I have a pair of RP 280fs and an RP 450c. I'm wondering if I should use the the 250s as my main surrounds or a pair of 160ms. I know the 250s will have a better sound dispersion but won't the 160m have a better, warmer tone? Which speakers would be best?
ryan  Jun 13, 2017
2 answers
A
I use the 160 as my front and the 280 as my surround the sound is great. You might try it the otter way but I think the 160 sound would be overpowered.
richard  Jun 13, 2017
A
Ryan - This is a question without a true definitive answer. Yes, you certainly could use the 160M and get by just fine. In my opinion though, the 250S would be a better choice and here is why: The 250S is configured to disperse the surround track in two directions to create an envelope that "surrounds you". The 250S is purpose built. I'm not sure if you have 2 surround in a 5 speaker setup or 4 in a 7 speaker setup. The point of the surround is to diffuse and surround. If wall mounting I'd lean even harder toward the 250S (its designed to do so). That's my two cents!

Q
If i wanted to wall mount these speakers, what would be my best option/s ?

They have a keyhole mount, all you need is a good screw and a stud to put it in. They are heavy so I would make sure you have something to secure the screw into.
nathan j  Nov 28, 2016
A
The back of the speakers have a hanger that will fit over a screw head. If you are mounting on a flat surface use a wall anchor and screw.
lee  Nov 27, 2016
A
They have slots on the back to use for mounting. They are pretty heavy so an anchor in a wall stud would be best but there wasn't one where I wanted to mount them so I used a heavy duty Sheetrock anchor. They have been up for over a year now without issue.
daniel p  Nov 27, 2016
A
Hi there. To wall mount these all that is required is one screw into a stud for each, or a drywall anchor and screw suitable for the weight. These were not difficult to mount at all. Hope that helps! Limited handyman skills are all you need.
adam  Nov 27, 2016
A
I have mine with just a screw type drywall anchor. I just used a wide head screw and haven't had any problems.

I'm using my 250's as my rear surround speaker powered by a Denon 5200. I am all more than pleased with sound that is being produced by this speaker.
jose  Mar 10, 2016
A
Hi Dennis. I use these speakers (4 of them) as side and rear surrounds in a 9 speaker + 2 subwoofer setup. When used as surrounds I would say absolutely yes, these speakers have adequate bass response. If used as stand alone bookshelf speakers in a 2 speaker setup Id say there are better selections including other Klipsch bookshelf speakers. I wasnt clear how you intend to use them from your question. Hope that helps!
adam  Mar 09, 2016
A
Sorry I cannot really rate my RP-250S bass response effectively. Since they are used as High speakers for Immersive sound (Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D), I cannot isolate them to test only the base. They are rated at 58 Hz on the low end and I am pretty sure they achieve that. As ambience speakers, they sound spectacular. I can highly recommend them. Hope this helps.
donald e  Mar 08, 2016
A
I would say yes. They really compliment my current system. I feel they provide good bass. I'm happy with them.
eric  Mar 08, 2016
A
I would look up the specs to determine low frequency response, but I have a caution for you if you intend to use these as main/front speakers, which is what it sounds like. These are intended to be surround speakers, and for that they are outstanding. In that application, low end bass extension is not as critical. Since these are not engineered to be front/main speakers, I would not expect them to be as effective as any other speaker designed to be a front/main speaker, like your Bose, which were engineered to be front speakers and to have correct sound stage/imaging. What I DO recommend is you consider the matching Klipsch bookshelf speakers in place of these, which I also have. Those have such a wide sound-field and broad sweet spot (and surprisingly good bass extension even when sitting on a shelf) that I think you would be very pleased. These are outstanding speakers. I believe you will hear things you never heard from your Bose speakers in terms of clarity, range and balance.
john  Mar 08, 2016
A
They do, but are you going to be using them as surrounds or just as a bookshelf speaker? If you are looking for great bookshelf speakers I would go with the new Klipsch RP-160M bookshelf speakers. The RP-250S speakers are designed for surround applications.
david  Mar 08, 2016
A
It's working good and very satified, thank you.
eddy  Mar 08, 2016
A
Yes, Yes I was going to buy a new bass no need.
michael  Mar 08, 2016
A
I was acutally surprised with the RP-250S's range, but it depends on what's sent to them. I found that my Yamaha RXA-1040 receiver in 5.1 decodes and handles it, but when set to 'straight', I was surprised at their range. The biggest change I found was in the bi-directional sound field, rather than directional bookshelf speakers I had.

I recently bought a pair of these and mounted them onto a pair of "Sanus Natural Foundation 20 inch Speaker Stands". Used "Blu-Tack Reusable Adhesive" to secure them to the platform. (both ordered from Amazon). Good height, well made and sturdy.
