About the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-260F

Dave Bar

Fill your home with powerful Klipsch sound

It's not every day that Klipsch releases a new series of loudspeakers, which is why we're so excited about the RP-260F. This floor-standing tower is part of Klipsch's latest Reference Premiere Series. Just like their predecessors, Reference Premiere speakers have what it takes to become big customer favorites. Each solidly built cabinet sports dual 6-1/2" woofers for tight, powerful lows and clear mids, plus Klipsch's signature 1" horn tweeter for crisp, extended, highs. The RP-260F's dynamic, room-filling sound and moderate size make it a great choice for both music and home theater systems in medium- to large-sized rooms.

The Reference Premiere Series difference

Never one to rest on its laurels, Klipsch has been busy refining and improving its designs to create loudspeakers that blow the doors off of its loyal followers' expectations. The new Reference Premiere Series builds on the acoustics and technologies of Klipsch's classic Reference Series, with important enhancements that provide an even more intense listening experience.

Hybrid horn technology for dynamic performance

Klipsch RP-250F tower speaker

Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Klipsch's newly designed Hybrid Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. Compared to previous models, this horn design delivers a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals. Even the horn material itself has been upgraded to molded silicone rubber that helps decrease resonance for smoother, warmer highs.

A horn that can enhance bass, too

Look around the back, and you'll see that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion.

High-tech woofer design

The RP-260F's Cerametallic™ woofers dish out smooth midrange and articulate, well-defined bass. Klipsch makes its cones out of specially treated aluminum that's strong yet lightweight to dampen and prevent distortion. With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave these woofers newly developed titanium voice coil formers that allow more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response.

Build a complete Klipsch system

You can build a great stereo system using a pair of RP-260Fs, or team them with other Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers and a subwoofer for high-impact home theater.

Product Research

Features

90° x 90° Hybird Tractrix Horns: A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed molded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.

LTS Tweeters: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

Cerametallic Woofers: The two 6.5" woofers of the RP-260F floor-standing loudspeaker features Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The 6.5" woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: The Klipsch RP-260F floor-standing speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies (1800Hz) offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.

Bass Reflex MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch RP-260F employs a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. Utilizing Tractrix geometry, the all new Reference Premiere bass port allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet  for a clean, powerful low frequency response. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.

  • MDF Plinth: The all new satin painted MDF plinth footers of the Klipsch Reference Premiere series floor-standing speakers lend an acoustically sound, authoritative stance when placing the speakers on your wood, tile, or carpeted floors.
  • Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic low-diffraction grille which easily snaps into place over its polymer front baffle.

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Rubber or Spike Feet: The floor-standing speaker comes with rubber and spike feet. The included rubber feet offer safe placement of the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The included optional spikes are intended to increase stability on carpeted floors; spikes are not recommended for hard surfaces. The rubber feet simply stick to the bottom of the speaker's MDF plinth, while the spikes screw into the bottom of the speaker's MDF plinth.

  • The rubber feet add approximately 0.125" of height to the speaker.
  • The spike feet add approximately 0.875" of height to the speaker.

Placement: The Reference Premiere series floor-standing loudspeakers are designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speakers by following these simple guidelines.

  • For optimum performance, Klipsch suggests placing the speakers 6'-15'apart. They may also be toed-in slightly for better stereo imaging. The listening position should be approximately 1-1.5x the distance separating the speakers.
  • The floor-standing loudspeakers should be equal distance from the floor and the wall behind them. It can also help to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.
  • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.

Greetings, Kylet. During the second week in January in 2016, they went on sale for $399 each, and that's when I bought a pair. My wife routinely watches 'Star Wars' movies in our home, and in the past two years she has thanked me many times for purchasing these Klipsch speakers. The neighbors? Not so much. ;)

Q
The RP-260F is listed as "8 ohm compatible". What is the minimum impedance? Can they handle 4 ohms?
benyakrick  May 08, 2016

A
The speakers have impedance, 8 ohms in this case, but it's not linear , goes up and down, from 2ohms to 10 ohms(depends on the frequency). The speaker does not handle the impedance , it has impedance....., the questions is if the amplifier or receiver can handle a certain impedance. There is not suck a thing as 4 ohms receiver!!!!!!!You don't measure receivers in ohms, but there are receivers or amplifiers which can handle 4 ohms speakers, lets say u have one with nomimal power 100watts into 4ohms, this means is good with speakers with at least 4 ohms impedance , but not lower than 4, this receiver will handle for sure higher impedances and will get around 50-60w into 8 ohms. The speaker does not handle impedance, it has impedance.
gabitu  Jun 27, 2017
A
These speakers run at 8ohms only. They cannot be wired to 4ohms.
herbert l.  May 09, 2016
A
I'm not sure what the question pertains to, because the A/C resistance rating (impedance) of 8-Ohms relates to the speaker itself. That rating is used to match it with an appropriate amplifier or receiver that has a similar rating for its output connections impedance. Normally the amplifier or receiver will indicate that the speakers must be 8 Ohms or they give the range of 4-8 Ohms for maximum efficiency. I hope that this helps.
adrian  May 09, 2016
A
The Klipsch RP-260F's are nominally rated for 8 ohms. What this means is an 8 ohm load from the receiver should be presented to the speakers. As the frequencies sent to the speakers change, different loads are presented to the speakers some requiring more current from the amplifier. These loads can reach 2 ohms or less. Keep in mind these loads are momentary and the speakers can handle them. If a 4 ohm nominal load is presented the current required may not be able to be supplied by the receiver as frequencies change. If this happened the sine wave would clip and cause possible damage to the speakers. For these reasons I would not recommend using a 4 ohm receiver with these speakers.
arthur  May 09, 2016
A
The speaker is what determines the impedance/resistance in the circuit. The speaker does not need to 'handle' 4 or 8 ohms, it is what provides the load. You just need to pay attention to your power source (receiver/amp) to ensure it is capable of driving a 1, 2, 4, 8, or whatever ohm load. As a note, an amp that can drive a 4 ohm load can also handle a 6 or 8 ohm or anything 4 or higher. If you consider these speakers, make sure you drive them with at least 130+W. I'm running a Yamaha 3050 (150 W) and it does not seem to have the output as my comparably sized Paradigm speakers with less power.

What kind of speaker wire connectors do these use?

You could use banana plugs OR simply connect the wire to the connector by hand. I use banana plugs since it is much more convenient.

Terminal posts. You can screw in bare wire or use banana plugs.
alex  Nov 24, 2018

Banana plugs
christopher  Nov 21, 2018

I never used these speakers because they were too big for my space. I can see from the specs / pictures that they take Banana plugs and these are the best in my opinion. I've used Audioquest silver on other Klipsch speakers but a less expensive brand would be fine. I'm pretty sure these will take spades or bare wire, but the convenience of Banana plugs can't be beat.

Q
These are Passive Speakers right ? Does it have a SUB out ?
augustya  May 08, 2018

A
This speaker is ported. The port is in the rear, has a horn shaped opening, and its purpose is to enhance bass.
donald  May 09, 2018
A
They are passive. No sub out. I connect the sub directly to my receiver.
alex  May 08, 2018
A
Yes, these are passive speakers. No sub out. They do have separate tweeter and woofer input should you care to bi-amp them, but if you plan on using a sub anyway (which I recommend highly) there is no need to bi-amp these speakers. These inputs are by default joined as one with a gold plated shorting block. These speakers with a good sub produce amazing sound. I have a Klipsch R-115SW with mine and WOW!
james  May 08, 2018
A
They are passive speakers with just speaker connections, no sub out. They can be bi-amped.
douglas  May 08, 2018
Q
When you bi amp these, what resistance is the tweeter and mid each at?
rc  Jun 07, 2017
2 answers
A
As with any speaker the impedance with vary depending on the frequency you are testing with. These speakers, both tweeter and mid-woofer have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms typically at about 1000hz. This means the maximum load is at around this point. Impedance will typically swing up to higher numbers on either side of this frequency. I do not know of any testing available to the public that shows the impedance at each frequency. Again, the impedance rating of a speaker is "nominal" which means lowest point at the rated level. in this case 8 ohms. I hope that makes sense the way I wrote it.
james  May 08, 2018
A
All Klipsch speakers have a rated Impedance of 8-Ohms, thus each set of speakers such the horn tweeter and the woofers connected in a bi-amp mode would still be 8-Ohms.

Q
What is the difference between the RP-250F and the RP-260F in terms of audible differences and output?
new user  Jan 14, 2017
2 answers
A
Since the RP-250F has 5 1/4" woofers and the RP-260F has 6 1/2" woofers, the bass should be a bit more pronounced in the RP-260F towers. The frequency ranges for both speakers are very close, with the RP-250F with 35-25,000 Hz and the RP-260F has a rating of 34-25,000 Hz.. Normally, one would not be able to hear that 1Hz difference. The RP-250F has a sensitivity rating of 96 dB, whereas the RP-260F has 97dB, again they are very close. Higher dB sensitivity rating is better. That only mean that it takes a just a very little more power to drive the speakers in the RP-250F than it does for the RP-260F. Basically, since the speakers are so close in performance rating, it comes down to the personal preferences of the potential buyer. Either option will work just fine, they are Klipsch speakers. Buy a pair and enjoy your music and movies. If you will be using at least one powered subwoofer for the low bass frequencies, the setup will sound great.
