Klipsch RP-280FA tower speaker

The RP-280FA's top-firing drivers deliver stunning height channel effects for Dolby Atmos soundtracks. (Pictured in walnut finish.)

Bounce sound off the ceiling for enhanced surround effects

How does this speaker work? Along with their forward-firing, dual 8" woofers and signature Klipsch horn tweeter, each RP-280FA boasts an upward-firing driver array built into the top of the enclosure. These drivers are angled and feature controlled dispersion, so they can reflect sound off of your ceiling and back down to your listening positions. And by using voice-matched drivers for both the top and front positions, the RP-280FA creates an exceptionally seamless, multi-dimensional space that puts you inside the action.

The Reference Premiere Series difference

The new Reference Premiere Series builds on the acoustics and technologies of Klipsch's classic Reference Series, with important enhancements that provide an even more intense listening experience.

Hybrid horn technology for dynamic performance

Klipsch's newly designed Hybrid Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space, for a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals. Even the horn material itself has been upgraded to molded silicone rubber that helps decrease resonance for smoother, warmer highs.

A horn that can enhance bass, too

This Reference Premiere speaker also uses a Tractrix horn-shaped port for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion.

High-tech woofer design

The RP-280FA's Cerametallic™ woofers use a newly developed titanium voice coil former that allows more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response.

Build a complete Klipsch system

Team a pair of RP-280FA tower speakers with these other Klipsch Reference Premiere Series speakers to create a high-impact Atmos home theater system.

    Features

Dolby Atmos Enabled Floor-Standing Speaker: The Klipsch RP-280FA is built upon the same technology and power as Klipsch's RP-280F floor-standing speaker, but with an elevation channel integrated into the top of the speaker to reflect sound off the ceiling to deliver the overhead Dolby Atmos experience.

    • Main Channel: The Klipsch RP-280FA's main channel consists of a 1" titanium dome LTS tweeter with hybrid Tractrix Horn and dual 8" Cerametallic cone woofers in a bass reflex enclosure. The main channel can handle up to 150 watts of continuous power and 600 watts of peak power. The main channel connects to your AV receiver's main front speaker outputs.
    • Height Channel (for Dolby Atmos): The floor-standing speaker's height channel consists of a 1" titanium dome LTS tweeter with hybrid Tractrix Horn and one 6.5" Cerametallic cone woofer in a sealed enclosure. The height channel can handle up to 75 watts of continuous power and 300 watts of peak power. The height channel connects to your AV receiver's Dolby Atmos effect speaker outputs.

90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns: A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed molded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.

LTS Tweeters: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

Cerametallic Woofers: The woofers of the RP-280FA floor-standing loudspeaker features Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: The Klipsch RP-280FA floor-standing speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies (1750Hz/2000Hz) offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.

Bass Reflex MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch RP-280FA employs a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. Utilizing Tractrix geometry, the all new Reference Premiere bass port allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet  for a clean, powerful low frequency response. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.

    • MDF Plinth: The all new satin painted MDF plinth footers of the Klipsch Reference Premiere series floor-standing speakers lend an acoustically sound, authoritative stance when placing the speakers on your wood, tile, or carpeted floors.
    • Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic low-diffraction grille which easily snaps into place over its polymer front baffle.

Binding Post Terminals: The floor-standing speaker offers dual binding post terminals for the main channel and single binding post terminals for the height channel. The main channel's two sets of binding posts are connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the main channel of the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Note: The speaker's main channel binding posts will need to be connected to your AV receiver's main front speaker outputs, while the speaker's height channel binding posts must be connected to your AV receiver's Dolby Atmos effects speaker outputs.

Rubber or Spike Feet: The floor-standing speaker comes with rubber and spike feet. The included rubber feet offer safe placement of the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The included optional spikes are intended to increase stability on carpeted floors; spikes are not recommended for hard surfaces. The rubber feet simply stick to the bottom of the speaker's MDF plinth, while the spikes screw into the bottom of the speaker's MDF plinth.

    • The rubber feet add approximately 0.125" of height to the speaker.
    • The spike feet add approximately 0.875" of height to the speaker.

Placement: The Reference Premiere series floor-standing loudspeakers are designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speakers by following these simple guidelines.

    • For optimum performance, Klipsch suggests placing the speakers 6'-15'apart. They may also be toed-in slightly for better stereo imaging. The listening position should be approximately 1-1.5x the distance separating the speakers.
    • The floor-standing loudspeakers should be equal distance from the floor and the wall behind them. It can also help to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.
    • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.

if i buy the RP-280FA do i still need to buy the RP-140SA? i was hoping that the RP-280FA will do the trick as i am out of space. Thank you!

It depends on how you plan to setup your home theatre. The SA's are a specific speaker designed for use with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos enabled receivers and are used to fill to fill a part of the sound field that the FA's physically cannot. If you're looking to enjoy the DTS:X or Dolby Atmos surround systems then you will need both but they are not used in standard 5.1/7.1 sound fields and not needed.

You don't need the 140SA but the added channels do add some depth you won't get otherwise. The nice thing about these (and the reason I bought them) is that they don't take up much space. They are designed to be in front of the room, either on the wall or on top of the floor speakers (the 280-FA's) which is where I have mine. The angle of the speaker projects the sound up off the ceiling to the back of the room without the need to run wiring or do a wireless setup. I first tried my system without them then I added these plus a sub woofer. All I can say is the sound is better with them, and I don't see space as much of an issue.

The RP-280FA has a built-in Dolby Atmos speaker. You don't have to purchase the RP-140SA.
    aaron  Dec 28, 2017

No, you will not need the 140s. The 280s have the ATMOS speaker built into the top . Speakers perform flawlessly.
    darrin  Dec 28, 2017
    A
no you do not need the extra atmos speakers. but from what i understand, having more than two upfiring speakers will further enhance the atmos effect.
    kevin  Dec 27, 2017
    A
I have found that the if you buy the rp 280fa they will be able to process the Dolby Atmos that you are looking for. They have the Dolby atmos driver built right in. So there is no need for the Rp140,s unless you are going to use them as your back channels

If you want Atmos sounds. need Atmos .receiver & Atmos movies only can hear the difference. I use 7.2 Atmos receiver only front Atmos speakers on the top main spear front
    sung ok  Dec 27, 2017
    A
You don't need the 140SA's if you get the 280FA's, as they have the Atmos modules/speakers built in (at least for the front channels). You could still incorporate the 140SA's if you wanted to add height effects to the side/rears, so a 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 application.

The mains are a good choice, very flexible for music and movies. I'd say focus making sure you match your center channel with the mains. The 450C goes nicely with these mains. Next focus on the most substantial sub you can afford. To finish answering your question, the surrounds are important but if you don't have the space you should be just fine with your 2nd choice. If you have a capable receiver it will auto-tweak the rears to timbre match the mains... Mains... Best center, best Sub(s) and then surrounds... Trust.

From what I can tell, the FA's contain the elevation speakers integrated into the top. If this is true, there is no reason to purchase the SA's. I'd ask a Crutchfield advisor if there is any doubt.

    Q
Considering RP280FA for my 18' x 20' room. Will the up firing speakers sound correct with my 14' ceiling and 17' tray ceiling or should I settle for the RP-280F? Concerned the large tray and high ceiling will not distribute the sound well.--Rick

I purchased the RP280FAs for my room which is about your size. I have a vaulted ceiling that ranges from 8' to 14' in height and my atmos speakers work well despite different heights for each speaker. In my receiver's speaker setup the volume for these are auto-adusted higher, but they are not over-worked even at high volume levels. That being said, the 17' height for the reflection off the stay ceiling sounds extreme to me. Both in volume and time delay. I would be tempted to just purchase the RP280Fs and pay the slight difference for a pair of their bookshelf speakers to serve as the atmos function mounted right at the transition to the stay ceiling. If wiring is a problem a person could always use Klipsch's RP140WMs for wireless. This would, of course, be a more expensive way to go.

Should be no problem.. most Atmos A/V receivers have room correction built in - so that can automatically correct room inconsistencies such as yours. The FAs are great if you want to use Atmos - otherwise the non-FAs are exactly the same.

I'm not sure. Still in the process of getting all the pieces for my system so haven't fully tried it out yet. But my setup is in area with sloped ceilings 8' to 10'. With 14' to 17' ceilings the speakers would have to send sound up at least 10' above speakers just to reach the ceiling then back down to your seating area. That might be a little too far for the sound to travel to get the best affect. Forget what Crutchfield's policy is, but i think you can return them for full refund in 30 or 60 days, something like that. So maybe you can try them out to see if they work. Just remember to keep the boxes and not to rip them up when opening so you can reuse to ship back if you choose to. FYI, the speakers are big and so are the boxes. Shipping label from fed ex said 90lbs each. Also, when I ordered mine online, confirmation email said that they would come by freight truck and Fed Ex would call to set up delivery time because someone would have to signs for them. This didnt happen. They left these 2 big boxes with expensive speakers sitting on my front porch. Was not happy with that, especially since the boxes had pictures of the speakers on them. So i would confirm with crutchfield to get delivery call from Fed Ex for delivery. Fortunately our neighborhood is pretty decent with watchfull neighbors and nobody bothered them. Hope this helps.

    Q
Is additional wiring required from the receiver to enable the Atmos speaker?
    peter  Jul 18, 2017
    10 answers
    A
Yes, an additional speaker wire is needed to each left/right speaker. The wires are attached to the "Height R and one to the Height L" terminals of the amp. The speakers have two terminal connections on the back. Hope this answers your question. I use a Marantz 6011 amp.
    william  Jul 19, 2017
    A
The main speakers (the forward-facing ones to the room) require wiring from one speaker output from your amplifier. The ATMOS speakers (those that face upward toward the ceiling) require wiring from another speaker output. In other words-- each of theses speakers provides 2 channels for your sound system. I hope this answers your question. Bruce PS. -- these are wonderful speakers!
    bruce  Jul 19, 2017
    A
Yes, you need to run a separate set of wires to power the Atmos speaker.
    troy  Jul 19, 2017
    A
Yes. You'll need one set of wires for the tower speakers and one set for the Atmos speakers on top. But the connections are close together for both sets on the back of speaker, so its a cleaner connection as far as not having to have speaker wires showing from out of the top of speaker.
    kevin  Jul 19, 2017

Yes. Take a look at the pics on the Crutchfield web site. Look at the pic of the back. Also, it requires an atoms enabled receiver.

Yes, I did run 2 lines to the speakers. The bottom alone does not activate the vertical top speaker
    john  Jul 19, 2017

Yes, it is essentially two speakers. You will need a separate channel for the top speaker
    anthony  Jul 19, 2017

Yes, it requires a separate set of wires and input on the receiver as well. The speakers are great, you will love them! I also purchased the Yamaha RX-A3060 receiver, it is outstanding as well!
    christopher  Jul 19, 2017
    A
Yes. You will need a wire (+) and (-) for the additional speaker in each tower.
    anthony  Jul 19, 2017
    A
Yes. The Atmos or height speakers have a separate connection on the back of the speaker. So you need to run a separate pair of wires bewteen the receiver and the speaker.

I don't recall if it was magnetic or velco but the cover is recessed into the speaker so the entire top of the speaker is the same level and there is a small tab at the rear end that allows you to remove the cover if you want to ... hope this helps.

They are just press fit into the top of the speakers. The fronts are magnetic.

The top grille fits into a recess, just a friction fit.
    steve  May 13, 2017

The grill on the height channel speakers (located on the top) is held in place by friction. There is a recessed opening. When the grill is in place, it is flush with the top of the speaker. Btw, the front grill is magnetically attached.
    joseph  May 12, 2017

No. The front grille is magnetic but the atmos grille is press fit. It has a little tab on it to aid in removing it. Same material as the front though.
    richard l  May 12, 2017

It's a well fitting friction fit. The cover is inset in the top of the case so that it doesn't protrude and is flat with the top. It has a small cloth tab at the back for easy removal.

The grills have a little tab on the rear of them, but I tried pulling on each speakers tab hard and couldn't move it. The front ones are magnetic. They look like a tight fit. Maybe prying with a knife blade would do it, but I'm not going to. I do love the things and have the Klipsch Atmos angle rears. I run Dolby 7 & they're great,

what is the difference between the black wood veneer and the ebony vinyl veneer finish because ebony is black and black is black is black, do they look the same or different? Please explain.
    new user  May 01, 2017
    6 answers
    A
visuallyThe speakers are identical in shape and size but the wood veneer is actually a wood veneer finish, thus making it visiually different than the all black finish.
    kenneth  May 25, 2017
    A
You are Correct in that the pictures shown on the Website "Look the Same" because they ARE the same pictures for Both Style options. From my understanding, the Ebony Vinyl Veneer Finish is the same Finish that is on the other Klipsch Speakers, such as the RP-250s and is Klipsch's "Standard" finish on their Speakers, where the "Wood Grain" is very, very subtle. The Black Wood Veneer Finish is just like the Walnut Wood Veneer Finish , in that the "Wood Grain" is highly visible or more pronounced within the Finish, and lacks the general Finish look that is found on the Majority of All Home Speakers. Vinyl would indicate a Wrap/Sticker that is applied with an adhesive and "Looks" like Wood, but is Not Real wood. However, Veneer would indicate that there is 1/8 inch thin layer of Real Hardwood, no thicker than 1/8", bonded or glued to a cheaper surface by an Adhesive. This practice allows for more appealing looking pieces at a lower Cost.

I purchased the walnut wood veneer and I love the look, however to answer your question: Yes both are black, however the wood veneer is a different texture and most would argue is an upgraded finish over the vinyl veneer because it is a true wood grain look.

Are these speakers made of laminated wood or is the color and grain real?

The ported enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a premium wood-grain polymer veneer and a polymer front baffle. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. I hooked up my speakers yesterday and one of them isn't working right. If I connect the wire to the bottom most set of binders I only get sound from the woofers, if I hook it up to the higher set of binders I only get sound from the horn. The atmos part of the speaker works fine. Any ideas?

There should be metal straps between the top and bottom right bindersand one between the top and bottom left binders. The straps then make the connection go to both sets of binders Hope this helps. Dave

You will need to verify that you have the gold-plated bar connecting the (2) red lower connections and the another gold-plated bar connecting the (2) black lower connections. This will allow a single set of Speaker wire to power the Woofer & Tweeter simultaneously. If this bar is not present, then you have the speakers configured for Bi-amp wiring, which requires (2) speaker cables, one for each set and will drive the Woofer & Tweeter separately.

I hope this isn't too obvious but that is where I will start. There should be gold colored jumpers between the red pair of binding posts and the black pair of binding posts. Since one speaker works it should have these two jumpers on it so you can see what they look like. If the jumpers are missing I am sure Crutchfield can send you a pair or you can use a short piece of speaker cable red post to red post black to black. Just don't go from red to black or you will break your amp. In your manual it will show these jumping straps. If the straps are already there or you use short pieces of speaker cable and both the horn and woofers do not play at the same time I am afraid your speaker crossover is broken and the speaker must be RMA'd. I hope this helps.

It sounds like you are connecting the wires to the Bi-Amp posts or have your receiver set to bi-amp sound mode. Bi-amp is where you utilize (2) receivers or (2) sets of speaker wires to connect two sets of binding posts on (1) Speaker to drive the (Woofers) & the (Tweeters) individuality, instead of using the regular Front Speaker Posts that will drive the Woofer & Tweeters simultaneously. I would verify your Speaker connections on the back of your Receiver and also verify your Surround/Stereo Mode to make sure it is Not set to Bi-Amp.

There should be a metal bridge connecting the top and bottom posts.

Hi Laura, there should be a small metal piece that connects the upper and lower bindings when you use one set. Check to see if you have that piece and also that all 4 posts are screwed in tightly.

There are two gold rectangles that connect the two lower binding posts. The speaker woofers and tweeters have separate binding posts to allow for bi-amping.

You need to hook them both up. Run the bottom speaker wire to the front speakers on the receiver and the top wire to height or surround back.

How do these speakers compare with B&W floor speakers? I owned B&Ws before and absolutely loved them so I'm hesitant to buy as there is no way to listen to them.

I actually had Best Buy haul a set of R28f speakers into the Magnolia room to compare with a $3000 set of B&Ws of similar size. Both I and the magnolia floor manager agreed the B&W sounded flat by comparison. The R28s do not use the identical components as the 280s but I am sure they are Comparable in sound quality. The 280 cabinet construction and build quality is far superior to the r28f.

I own 4 RP-280FA's and love them. Excellent sound. I also have the RP-450CA (center). It is fantastic. Great clear voices from it. And, the R-115SW (sub) that just knocks the low's right out of the ballpark. They are all big heavy speakers. My only complaint is the 280FA's have little rubber stick-on pads to protect hard wood floors. They suck! There should be screw in pads to go into the holes that you put the carpet spikes into.

I have two questions 1.) I'm running a Yamaha RX-A840 receiver, would these speakers require more power than my receiver can provide? 2.) Does the width of these speaker (10 9/16") include the base or is the base wider?

this speaker is rated at 150 watts RMS, my Denon AVR X5200 is rated at 140 per channel. They sound great at low volume as well as high. As for the base, it sticks out on the sides about 1/2 in. its sorta like a platform for the speaker and it slightly angled so that the back of the speaker is slightly lower than the front giving you an upward firing of the sound. I have played theses speakers without my subs and the bass that's produced is rich and clean. If you have the room for theses I highly recommend them. I hope this helps.

Justin, I can't give you a firm answer for question one, but I can tell you that I am using a 5-7 year old Harman Kardon AVR3600 and it drives the speakers just fine. You could look of the specs on this and compare it to your unit. For question 2 the wide of the unit at the base is approx 10 9/16" the width of the cabinete itself is about 9 5/8". Also the depth at the based is about 19 3/4". I hope this helps. Dave

    1. I have no idea. 2. 10-9/16" is the width of the base. The tower itself is 9-1/2" inches wide.

I see there are three pairs of wire inputs in the back, how exactly should one wire these speakers up to enable Atmos?

There are indeed three terminal connections on this speaker. The bottom two are connected by a bar for a typical wiring configuration. If the bars are removed the main speaker may now be bi-amped. Be sure to check your amp's configuration to see if this feature can be enabled. My Yamaha Aventage 2060 did improve my speaker performance in the bi-amp configuration. The top terminals are for the atmos speaker.

There are only two pair of terminals on back of speaker. You connect the atmos terminals on speaker to the "Height" terminals on your amp. Connect your main left/right amp terminals to the other terminals on speakers.

The Klipsch RP-280FA floor-standing speaker offers dual binding post terminals for the main channel and single binding post terminals for the height (Atmos) channel. Each binding post features a positive (red) and negative (black) terminal and will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire from your receiver.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Klipsch offers the horn tweeters for very direct sound dispersion. They will perfectly fine with the room dimensions listed. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
