Your ticket to thrilling movie effects

Klipsch Reference RS-42 II

Angled drivers spread ambient sound effects throughout your room.

Here's a surround speaker that'll really put you in your favorite movies. The RS-42 II delivers rich, lifelike sound that adds dimension to the action you see on-screen. Its angled driver design spreads ambient effects over a diffuse soundfield, completely enveloping you. This design also helps this speaker produce great sound even if you place it in a less-than-ideal location. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. You'll enjoy dynamic surround sound that enhances your movie experience, from soft sounds like falling rain to the roar of a dragon flying overhead. Plus, the stylishly curved grille helps soften its appearance in the back of your room.

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice, high quality surround speaker at a great price. It mounts easily/nicely to the wall with a keyhole mount making hiding speaker wire easy. They sound nice considering it only has 4" woofers. The magnetic grill is great too. The box is well made and looks good mounted on a wall with its half moon shaped grill. My Onkyo TX-NR636 recognizes the crossover frequency at 120 Hz which is a lot higher than I was expecting. I was hoping for 70-80 Hz and is the only reason I docked this speaker 1 star.

Pros: Great looking, high quality speaker. I love the look when mounted on the wall. Sound nice too.

Cons: The low frequency response could be better.

Sound great, have good sound dispersion. I had previously bought the Klipsch RF62 towers & RC-52 center as a upgrade to replace my Energy speakers running on a Yamaha RX-A710 amp. I added these speakers to balance out the system's week satellites.

Pros: Sound quality & dispersion.

Cons: Slightly large size with grill cover on.

Excellent surround speaker. Great speaker and nice price since they have been replaced with a newer model. Matched up well with my rf-62 mains and rc-52 center.

Pros: Great Clarity.

Cons: A little large with the grill on it so in a mix use room it is does stand out compared to smaller satellite speakers.

I got these Klipsch RS-42 II surrounds to replace some older satellites I was using for the rears in my setup which has some Klipsch Cornwall II's for mains. They match the Cornwalls much better. Being dipoles they disperse the sound very well in the rear of the room and their sensitivity is better suited to the mains. I am very pleased with this purchase. and would do it again. The price was very good as these are closeout models.

Pros: Dipoles, sensitivity, price, match for other Klipsch speakers.

Cons: None

Klipsch RS42 II

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had two pairs of RS42 IIs. When I saw the price, I bought a third pair. At reasonable sound levels they fill the room up real nice. I also have a pair if RS52 II. I think the 42s are a better buy. My home has dozens of Klipsch Reference series speakers. I like the brand. I drive them with upper range Sony's, Denon's, and Adcom AVRs.

Pros: Nice clear sound. Well built. Great sale price. I almost bought another pair of RF82s.

Cons: A little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Cons: Large

Klipsch Reference RS-42 II

Written by: RS from NJ on January 7, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I initially ordered two RS-41 II, which were good. However I wanted it liitle bit more bass to compliment by two Heresy's, a SW-10 woofer, a Klipsch KV2 Center, and a Denon AVR-1913. I should have orignially listen to Brandon to go with the RS--42 II. My basement area is 15x30, but the theater section being 15x15, with the back area with my pool table. The RS-42II's filled the complete area with the excellent Klipsch beautiful sound. And to believe I had two Realistic Optimus Surrounds. I did not know what I was misssing. Great Customer support-all around.

Pros: Great Sound Dispersion. Nothing like that Klipsch Sound.

Cons: None

Klipsch RS-42 II...

Written by: Jim D from Rochester, NY on May 22, 2014

These do the job. I'm currently using them for rear surrounds, but used a pair for front mains coupled with my Klipsch subs for a while. They are very efficient and performed perfectly.

Pros: Good sound for the money. Nice sound stage due to the set up/directions the speakers face.

Cons: A bit heavy - purchased sturdy brackets for wall mounting.

Probably Great for a 7.1 or 9.1 System

Written by: Anonymous from ID on March 19, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The promise of the diffused sound of these speakers prompted me to try them in place of the Klipsch 51iis I had initially purchased as rear speakers in a 5.1 setup. For the most part, I discovered that simply raising the height of my 51s improved the soundstage over these multi-directional speakers. The 51s have larger mid/bass drivers, so mine may have been an unfair comparison, but the occasional improvement in ambient sound effects was more than offset by the loss of three-dimensional soundstage. Were I to run a 7 or 9 channel system, however, these would be the speakers I would add.

Pros: No obvious point-source to the sound. Look cool.

Cons: Costly.

These are excellent speakers. Bought them to replace some smaller old surrounds I had previously used. I have the matching reference set now. Very clear and crisp sound. Would highly recommend these.

Pros: Very clear, powerful, deep sound. Integrity of speakers sounds excellent with high and low volume.

Cons: None

Klipsch Reference RS-42 II

Written by: Mike from PA on January 12, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using these with RF-52s, an RC-52 II, and a KEF 25b driven by an Onkyo SR608. The RS-42 IIs were the last piece to be upgraded, replacing Infinity Primus 160s. The difference is incredible. I was somewhat worried that the smaller woofers in the RS-42s would be noticeable but quite the opposite is true.

For mounting, I went with the Sanus EFSATB stands. These stands work nicely with the RS-42s but beware that the speakers are just under the max weight of the stands. Also, the RS-42s mounting holes are 3 inches apart and the EFSATB stands do not come with a mounting plate that fits. I used the flat plate and the double sided tape to mount and the result is surprisingly sturdy.

If you have a Klipsch reference series system, don't hesitate to get the RS-42s.

RS-42 II Speakers

Written by: Jared from Troy, ny on March 14, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the RS-42 IIs to go with RF-52s, RC-52 II, and RW-10D system driven by the Marantz SR-5002. The speakers sound blends in perfectly with the other Reference speakers. Sound is crisp, clear, precise and blends in beautifully. The odd shape of the speaker sends sound in two directions which really helps with the surround experience. We have them mounted ~5 feet high on the back wall. The RS-42 IIs do not over power the front sound stage but rather add that additional dimension. I would certainly recommend these speakers to owners of a Reference front sound stage.

Pros: Sound quality, each speaker projects sound in two directions

Cons: Expensive!

Great speakers... Excellent sound quality... A++ Buy

Written by: Chris S from San Antonio, Tx on February 4, 2011

Just picked up a pair of these today and I could not be more impressed with them. Sound
quality is excellent, very crisp and precise with good highs and mids. Have these paired
with a set of RF-52 II, and a RC-52 II, and a 1500w definitive sub, and denon receiver.
These speakers were the perfect ending pieces to my system. Absolutely love klipsch
quality and performance and would recommend to anyone shopping for awesome home
theater quality audio. At first glance these speakers are pretty big but once I got them
home and on my walls they really dont stick out as much as I thought they might which is
good.... Definitely not like the RC-52 and RC-62's which are look like they weight 30lbs
and are as big as my receiver!!

Overall great speakers... def buy you wont regret it !!

Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RS-42 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RS-42 II is able to fill smaller rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing surround sound that you can listen to for hours.

Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): The Klipsch RS-42 II delivers precise sonic detail through the careful positioning of two Tractrix Horn loaded titanium-diaphragm tweeters and two 4-inch woofers. By aligning the two horns at 90 degrees with respect to each other, along with the two woofers, the RS-42 II smoothly covers a 180-degree horizontal arc, allowing maximum placement flexibility. This unique Wide Dispersion Surround Technology delivers a new dimension of reality and convenience, and produces a smooth, seamless broad distribution of sound, which is the perfect vehicle for every surround format.

Tractrix Horn Tweeters: The RS-42 II utilizes dual Tractrix Horns for a more genuine, lifelike sound. The Tractrix Horns deliver a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. In addition, behind each horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Cerametallic Woofers: The dual 4-inch woofers of the RS-42 II surround loudspeaker feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The 4-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: The Klipsch RS-42 II's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.

Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 4-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and dual 1-inch titanium diaphragm compression drivers are mounted in a bass reflex enclosure which features two side-firing ports (one on each side). The twin side-firing ports eliminate turbulence noise, while increased baffle ribbing around the horn mouth dramatically improves acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a Matte Black vinyl and an aluminum front baffle. The RS-42 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.

Magnetic Grille: The surround loudspeaker features a removable magnetic low-diffraction grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference Series RS-42 II is equipped with sturdy binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: The surround speaker comes supplied with four self-adhesive rubber feet so you can sit the speakers on a stand or shelf securely. The rubber feet add approximately 0.3125" to the height of the speaker.

Note: There are also two 1/4"-20 threaded inserts on the back of each loudspeaker for mounting the speaker to third-party stands (sold separately). The two threaded inserts are spaced 3.0" apart.

Wall Mounting: The Klipsch Reference surround speaker features a single keyhole slot on the back of the cabinet for wall-mounting the speaker without any additional wall-mount bracket (mounting screws not supplied).

Placement: The Klipsch Wide Dispersion Surround Technology surround speakers in a typical 5.1-channel system can be mounted to side or rear walls. It is recommended that the RS-42 II be mounted above the ear height of seated listeners (between 5 to 7 feet above the floor).

Customer Q&A

i would guess yes I have them in 7.2 configuration and they sound great so 2 more for front surround dont see why not [ RICK R  Aug 31, 2015 ]
I have these speakers mounted to the rear just above ear level. Front speakers are 3 way JBL L100t3 which have had for many years but recently refreshed. Center speaker is Klipsch. They sound great with my configuration. Open room with living, dining and kitchen, about 40x17. I would not use these as front speakers. [ Edward  Aug 30, 2015 ]
I have 4 of these; two as rear and and two as surround for my 7.1. I would use them for a 9.2. [ Jared  Aug 30, 2015 ]
I am not an audiophile but I think they sound great. My couch is on the back wall of an 20'x15' room with 9 ft ceilings. I placed them on the side walls about 2' from the back wall and about 5.5' ft high. They easily help fill the room with awesome enveloping sound. Hope this helps! [ JONATHAN  Dec 31, 2013 ]
These speakers are amazing in any application. 5.1 or extended stereo doesnt matter where you sit in the room. They are fantastic! [ MATT  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Bought these for my son for Christmas. I have the older version. Awesome speakers! You won't find better for a better price. [ Tony  Dec 27, 2013 ]
These speakers perform extremely well. they have great imaging with surround. depending on the room size and speaker placement you may need tweak the delay on your receivers rear channels to get them at their best. Been using for a little over month now. [ RICK R  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Hello Kevin, This is the reason I purchased the RS-42 !!'s. I use them as my rear surrounds and they have exceeded my expectations. The 5.1 experience is excellent. I used a much smaller speaker previously to these. The RS-42 II truly encircle you with sound and are accurate. I have a number of live music concerts on Blu-ray and they have never sounded better. It brings the auditorium experience home. I would purchase these again. Regards, [ CHRIS L  Dec 27, 2013 ]
They are outstanding. The sound and appearance are excellent. [ JEFF  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Depends on what else you're using with them. I have a top of the line denon and am runnig them as my sides in a 7.2 all of which are klipsch and they sound great. Really can't go wrong with klipsch. Hope his helps. [ DENNIS  Dec 27, 2013 ]
These speakers are not bad at all for 5.1 music in my opinion. I was originally tempted to go with the bookshelf pair, but now I am glad that I decided against it. [ CHRISTOPHER M  Dec 27, 2013 ]
