Our take on the Klipsch Reference RW-12II

by Dave Bar
Klipsch

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Get dynamic bass for your space

The hard-hitting Klipsch RW-12II adds deep bass impact to all your music, movies, and video games. This Special Limited Edition Reference series powered subwoofer sports a strong-yet-light 12" aluminum cone woofer designed for quick, precise movement, and can easily fill even a large home theater room with deep bass. Plus, it has a clean, neutral appearance that won't clash with your décor.  Klipsch's Corner Port™ technology helps minimize turbulence and distortion for clean sound. And since the port is in the front, you won't hear unwanted "boominess" from sound reverberating off your walls and floor. That means you can place this sub just about anywhere and enjoy punchy low-frequency effects.

Features

12" Powered Subwoofer: The Klipsch RW-12 II active subwoofer employs a front-firing 12" anodized aluminum cone woofer powered by an integrated amplifier for dynamic bass from movie and music soundtracks. The Klipsch RW-12 II utilizes a bass-reflex enclosure with an advanced front-firing port to produce tight, accurate bass. This highly efficient enclosure design produces more output using less energy.

Subwoofer Controls: The Klipsch RW-12 II powered subwoofer offers Volume, Crossover, and Phase control.

  • Volume: The gain control of the Klipsch RW-12 II adjusts the subwoofer's volume relative to the rest of your home audio system.
  • Crossover: The Klipsch RW-12 II powered subwoofer features a variable lowpass crossover which is adjustable from 50-150Hz. The crossover point chosen determines where low bass frequencies are "passed-off" from your AV system's loudspeakers to the Klipsch powered subwoofer. Set the crossover point based on the size of your systems' main left/right speakers.
  • Phase: The Klipsch RW-12 II powered subwoofer has an adjustable phase control which can be set between 0° and 180°. This control is used to acoustically match the subwoofer's output to your system's main speakers. Select a position between 0° and 180°, in which the subwoofer has more output at your main listening position.

Low-Level & High-Level Inputs: The Klipsch RW-12 II provides both low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker) inputs.

  • RCA/LFE Inputs: The Klipsch RW-12 II powered subwoofer is equipped with a pair of line-level RCA-type inputs. Most of today's AV receivers have a line-level subwoofer output (LFE) labeled Subwoofer Pre Out, Sub Out, or SW Out. If your receiver has this output, connect one end of a subwoofer cable to it and connect the other end of the cable into the powered subwoofer's line-level input labeled "LEFT/LFE". This connection allows the subwoofer to operate with both music and surround sound movies. In absence of a subwoofer (LFE) output on your receiver, as an alternative hookup, you can connect Left & Right channel pre-amp outputs from a receiver to the "Left/LFE" and "Right" input on the powered subwoofer.
  • Speaker Level Inputs: If your AV receiver does not have an LFE out or subwoofer preamp output, you can connect the Klipsch subwoofer to the receiver via speaker-level connection, using the powered subwoofer's 5-way binding posts. Using 16-gauge or larger speaker wire, connect the Red 'positive' (+) terminal of the AV receiver's Left channel to the Red (+) terminal of the subwoofer's Left speaker-input channel. Connect the Black 'negative' (-) terminal of the AV receiver's Left channel to the Black (-) terminal of the subwoofer's Left speaker-input channel. Repeat this procedure for connecting your AV receiver's Right channel input. The terminals on the AV receiver used to connect the powered subwoofer will be the same terminals used to connect the AV receiver to your main speakers.

WA Port (optional): The Klipsch powered subwoofer is fitted with a proprietary 4-pin "WA-Port" connector for wireless operation, using Klipsch's optional WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit (714WA2, sold separately). The Klipsch WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit consists of two components; a wireless Transmitter & wireless Receiver. The WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit makes adding the Klipsch powered subwoofer to your home theater system much easier, because it replaces the need for a separate subwoofer cable that traditionally must be connected between the receiver and the powered sub. Now, you can easily place your powered subwoofer where it both sounds and looks best in the room since you're not restricted by an audio cable.

Auto Turn-On/Off: The Klipsch powered subwoofer features a 3-way power switch. This is the main AC power switch for the subwoofer. This switch must be in the "On" position for the subwoofer to operate or the "Auto" position for the Auto-On feature to function. Set this switch to the "Off" position if the subwoofer will not be used for an extended period of time. When this switch is in the "Auto" position, the subwoofer will automatically turn on when it senses a signal. It will automatically turn off after 20 minutes with no signal.

Rubber Feet: The Klipsch powered subwoofer is includes four self-adhesive rubber feet to help prevent against vibration.

Placement: Klipsch powered subwoofers are designed to reproduce deep bass and deliver the impact that makes your movies and music come alive. Typically, optimum performance will result if you place the subwoofer in  a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers.

Klipsch RW-12II

Written By Carrie, Bismarck North Dakota on Thursday, July 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub at a great price with free shipping. Can't beat that! I'm using this sub with the Klipsch Icon speakers and a Klipsch SW-350 sub. It compliments the other speakers and other sub quite well. Now that I am running two subs, the house rumbles. This is a great looking and sounding sub. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants deep, clean, heart pounding bass. Buy one, you won't be disappointed!
Pros:
Excellent clean bass. Sounds great with another sub.
Cons:
Large footprint so you can't put it just anywhere.

Shaking the Floor

Written By WJS, Raleigh NC on Thursday, July 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first sub-woofer I have owned. Setup is easy, the sound is amazing. I coupled this sub-woofer with a pair of RB-81 II Klipsch speakers and it sounds like I am in the front row at a concert. WOW what a sound. Sure am glad I replaced my old speakers, you can hear things in your music you never noticed before.
Pros:
Looks really great, easy to setup, really delivers the low end beat.
Cons:

Solid, very solid

Written By KennyDu, Georgia on Sunday, June 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Klipsch has been making very high quality loudspeakers for many decades, and when you pick up their high end gear, you just can't go wrong. The RW-12II is used to round out the final piece of my home theater/media room set up with Klipsch Heresey center channel and Klipsch Cornwalls on the left and right. The sound is pure and crystal clear across the entire sound spectrum. The RW filled in that low end without being "boomy".
Pros:
Quality materials and high quality sound. Strongly prefer direct firing instead of down-firing.
Cons:
None that I can think of.

Best 12" sub i have heard, specially for the $!

Written By Big Boys Hobbies Metal Detectors, Oklahoma City OK on Sunday, June 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have listened to many 12" subs on various receivers and this one by far is the deepest and most natural bass I have heard. GREAT buy for the $. Not sure spending $$$$ on a higher end sub is really worth it unless you just like to have the best of the best. This sub is soooo much better than my old 12" with same sized amp.
Pros:
All around great sub.
Cons:
Didn't buy it the first time because I am cheap. lol

Power, fidelity, more

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! Got this Klipsch powered sub to compliment the other five K's I purchased from Crutchfield two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I like the fullness it brings from my new Onkyo TX NR626 7.2 to replace my aging HK. The price break on this unit was too appealing to let slip away before they're gone.
Pros:
Well built, powerful, affordable.

Tough competition

Written By Rob, Erie, PA on Thursday, June 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Best subwoofer for the price. Very clean base but powerful to move a room. My living room is 14ft by 14ft and there is a kitchen with no wall holding the sound in that extends the room another 14 ft deep. Anyone complaining about the grill doesn't know how to put it on right. When I first put it on I thought the same thing but you have to push the 4 points where the clips are and they snap in for a tight fit. I only have the gain a little over half way and it fills the whole room and kitchen.
Pros:
Powerful. Clean. Quality.
Cons:
None.

Klipsch Reference Subwoofer

Written By JG, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Another good product from the Klipsch Reference line of speakers. For medium size rooms this subwoofer is all you should need to give you that deep thunderous sound from movie soundtracks.
Pros:
Discounted Price, Klipsch reputation and sound quality, size, easy to calibrate and connect to your home AVR. Crutchfield delivered as promised and with no issues! Trusted seller.
Cons:
Front Speaker Grill could be better designed as its easy to come off. If its located in a higher traffic area this can be an issue. Not the copper look on the speaker w/cover removed.

I has a pretty large foot print, it takes up more space than I would like.

Pros:
Handles crossover well with Yamaha rv 673.

Good bang for the buck

Written By JohnF, Lincoln Co NC on Saturday, May 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Probably would be 4.5 stars if I had that option. Easy to hook up, good bass, and a pretty darn good deal for this price. It would not be if it was regular price, but at this price mark, its going to be tough to beat. Keep in mind that I am also using a B&W 1000 sub and only got the Klipsch when I blew the cone on the BW and it was down. Have since rebuilt the BW with OEM parts and with both running, you can definitely tell the difference between the BW and the Klipsch. Even though the BW only has 100 watts, its smokes the Klipsch, but then its a sub that cost around a grand back in the mid 90s!. That being said, still a good deal.
Pros:
Good unit at a good price and will be hard to beat in this price range at this moment.
Cons:
Speaker grille connections are wimpy and with enough bass will pop the grille out. No external fuse that I can find. For 275Watts, it just doesnt seem to have the power it should for that much juice.

Good subwoofer at nice price

Written By Robert, Collingswood, NJ on Tuesday, April 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well in 2-channel stereo setup and does a great job of filling in the bottom end for a set of Klipsch RB-61 bookshelf speakers. Not using it to shake the house in a home theater system. Easy to set up.
Pros:
Nice piece of gear, looks good, satisfies my needs perfectly, bought it at a nice discount.
Cons:
Snap fasteners that attach the grill are flimsy and cheaply made.

The Perfect Fit!

Written By BUBS, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, April 14, 2014

This Klipsch powered subwoofer brings the music in my living room to life. Whether the music is originated from my TV (as in regular programs like "The Voice" or even commercials), or from my tuner, or from my CDs, there's a bass boost that seriously compliments all the other sounds from any music source. The degree of bass sound is easily adjustable or controllable, and of course, was thoroughly explained by my Crutchfield sales person. This superb piece of audio equipment should be a must for anyone who wants to enjoy the ultimate fullness and beauty of any "sound of music"! Plus, it was offered at a great price!
Pros:
Great bass sound that supplements and compliments all other notes and is easily controllable so not to dominate. Looks solid. Great price.

Very Pleased

Written By Darin, Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday, March 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased Klipsch speakers to replace an old theater in a box system. There is no comparison and sound is nothing short of amazing. After also comparing Bose and Polk - Klipsch won out on sound quality and value. They brought our movie viewing experience to a whole new level. Watched Thor 2 the other night and when the space ship was crashing our role house was rumbling. Felt like you were there. Very pleased with this purchase.
Pros:
Deep rich sound Very well made
Cons:
Doesn't come with any type of useful manual. A simple diagram of the rear of the speaker would be sufficient. Not being a speaker guru had to research what the phase switch is for.

Nice subwoofer

Written By Roger W, MD on Saturday, March 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace an older 8" Polk sub for my home theater setup. Very deep, tight bass that you can feel. You do have to play with the crossover point and volume level a bit to match your speakers, but once you get it dialed in it sounds great. I keep my volume at about 40- 50%, fills my entire room. Be careful when attaching and removing the front grill, the mounting posts are very thin and break off easily. Crutchfield sent me a replacement grill when mine broke, great customer service. Great price on this sub, I ordered on a Sunday and it got delivered 2 days later!
Pros:
Plays deep and tight
Cons:
Kind of big, but a 12" sub can only be so small

Great Sub!

Written By Technogeek, Sharpsburg Ga. on Friday, March 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, Received this two days ago to add a second sub to my 7.2 system. Have an 11 year old 12 inch Sony sub SA-WM500 Rated 150 Watts 20-200 HZ that I thought was pretty good so I took that off line and replaced it with the 12 inch Klipsch just to compare it to the Sony and after listening for 10 minutes I could not believe my ears. This sub is so much better than my previous sub. The bass was deeper, stronger more powerful and I was getting thumped with out it being boomy. I am thrilled and am thinking about purchasing another and not using the sony sub in this room. Wow!!! I have it in a 17 by 20' room and it has no problem shaking it. Great Sub!
Pros:
Powerful deep solid bass. It is large so make sure you have room but it looks great!
Cons:
None

who thought you could make the 70's better

Written By james, Waynesboro Va. on Monday, March 24, 2014

Bought this just to see if it would make a difference. The answer is sure did. I'm using this sub with a pair of Tannoy Ardens I bought in 1977.The Ardens have a 15 inch woofer and have a smooth base but the addition of the sub has given a fullness that I didn't think I was missing. This system is for music and the sub has give new life to my blues cd collection.

Easy hook up , smooth base sound

Suprised! $1000+ sound for $400

Written By marco360, Bellingham, WA on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Didn't expect $1000+ sound for $400 on sale. Expected a boomy cheap jukebox sound but instead got very tight bass. It's only used for music, it adds a huge soundstage or dimension to a pair of Focal 806 that badly needed more bass. The bass notes hit and stop immediately, no extra added boom or resonance. Close your eyes and the bass guitar, bass drum, piano, organ, anything with below 150Hz tones sound exactly as musical instruments should, they sound like they're right in the room with you. No boomy muddy mushed out sound. Cone stops immediately as if it put the brakes on. If this has damping factor in the amp, it is definitely works. Listened to other brands and models sub $1000 range at local stores, none compared. Not being used for home theatre but suspect it can be thunderous as the level knob isn't anywhere near the mid point. It was just an impulse buy, Crutchfield had it marked down, they'll take anything back if you're not happy, I took a chance. I'm not returning this, am happy. Don't feel the least bit guilty owning what many would consider a cheapie sub in a world of $1000-$5000 subs (and more) it really is that good.
Pros:
Many different methods to connect to existing equipment. Never expected this quality of bass at this low a price. Can listen for hours without ear fatigue.
Cons:
Level knob is a little too sensitive A bit on the large size.

Klipsch Reference RW-12II

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this subwoofer. It fills my semi-large living room 20'x15' w/12' foot ceiling with great deep bass. I use the LFE hookup and was so easy to set up.
Pros:
Great power at 275 watts RMS for the price.
Cons:
Wife thinks it's a little bulky.

Awesome addition

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub to finish the Klipsch surround system. What a great sub!! Fills the room with those great lows that everyone notices. I also paired this with the wireless link, so I can place it anywhere with a plug and not have to worry about running separate cables.

Need clarification on LFE. This model apparently has the LFE conjoined with the L/R Line In cables. When connecting to my receiver (Panasonic VSX-1020-K) do I need to have these cables connected with an adapter into the sub-woofer pre-out? [ Robert  Jan 22, 2014 ]

  • Hey Robert, I bought this sub about a month ago and hooked it up to my Yamaha receiver. I connected the subwoofer to my receiver's pre out with a cable comprised of one RCA connector on one end and two RCA connectors on the other end. The single RCA connector plugs into the receiver and the double RCA connectors plug into the subwoofer. It works great. I bought the cable at a local electronics store. Unrelated to the RCA connectors, I want to let you know that the 12 inch woofer isn't made of aluminum, as the ad says. It is made of some non-metallic substance. Regardless, it pumps out the bass. I played Bach's Tocata and Fugue in D minor, a famous organ piece, to give the sub a workout. The whole house was shaking. I hope this helps. Yes, I would buy this again. [ David   Jan 28, 2014 ]
  • You just need to run 1 RCA cable from your Receiver Sub-woofer Pre-Out to the LFE/Left connection on the sub-woofer. I have mine connected this way to a Denon Receiver and works great. [ JOHN P   Jan 23, 2014 ]
  • no [ JAMES R   Jan 23, 2014 ]
  • Hi Robert! I'm not sure if this answers your question, but I ordered this same subwoofer and have this receiver : Sony STR-DN840 7.2 Channel 1050-Watt A/V Receiver (Black). I was told all I needed was this subwoofer cable: AudioQuest SUB-A 3 Meter Subwoofer Cable. Not sure if that helps or not, but I thought it would be worth a shot! [ JAMES   Jan 22, 2014 ]
  • Same answer I got from tech support. Thanks, Jason! [ Robert   Jan 22, 2014 ]
  • Robert, from my understanding, you will only need to use the LFE if your receiver has a LFE/subwoofer output. I am running a denon AVR4311, which has the LFE out, and it works great! [ JASON E   Jan 22, 2014 ]
  • I'm not to sure. I think u should call Tech support. [ Michael   Jan 22, 2014 ]
