Our take on the Klipsch Image S4i Rugged

Portable headphones are portable for a reason: they're meant to be taken out in the elements, not left at home or tucked away in your bag. The Klipsch Image S4i Rugged in-ear headphones are built tough, giving you great sound anywhere you go. These all-weather earbuds are moisture resistant, letting you put them to the test indoors and out, no matter the conditions.

You go outside when it rains, so why shouldn't your headphones?

Portable headphones are portable for a reason: they're meant to be taken out in the elements, not left at home or tucked away in your bag. The Klipsch Image S4i Rugged in-ear headphones are built tough, giving you great sound anywhere you go. These all-weather earbuds are moisture resistant, letting you put them to the test indoors and out, no matter the conditions.

Your music will sound clear and full whether you're grinding through a workout in the gym, on the trail or through the streets, thanks to the S4i Rugged's dual magnet micro speakers. Deep bass and detailed highs will accompany you everywhere, without tripping you up or slowing you down. The durable cable is tangle resistant, and the moisture-resistant remote gives you easy track and volume control of your iPhone or iPod while it stays out of harm's way. Take calls using the built-in directional microphone, or ignore them and just keep moving.

A secure fit for your mobile lifestyle

The S4i Rugged comes with four pairs of flexible oval-shaped ear tips, so you can find the perfect fit. This not only provides optimum sound quality, but also ensures that your headphones stay securely in your ears while you're racing up a bike trail or down a ski slope. Loop the cords around your ears and attach to your clothing with the included clip for even more security. The supplied travel case and cleaning cloth make sure these headphones are always ready for action whenever you are.

*The remote and mic are supported by iPod nano (4th generation or later), iPod classic (120GB, 160GB), iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPhone 3GS or later, and iPad. The remote is also supported by iPod shuffle (3rd generation or later).

Great sound quality. comfortable in ears. surprised that it is discontinued.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was very impressed with the sound and rugged design. I wish I had ordered one for my wife!

Pros: Excellent rugged design. Sound quality is crisp. Not overly bass laden.

Cons: In-line controller is a bit big.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first pair was seized by my wife who usually doesn't like in the ear products...she liked these. So, when I saw these on sale I grabbed a pair for myself. I really like the larger controls (as long as I use the included clip to keep it from tugging on the buds). Sound is really good for this price range. I am very happy with this purchase

Pros: Comfortable, easy access to controls and the sound quality works for me.

Cons: None

Klipsch Ear Buds

Fredo D from Anaheim Hills, CA on 8/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always loved the Klipsh products. This is my second sets of Klipsh ear buds and they are just as comfortable as my first. I like the extra-large control button that operated my iPod controls. I would seriously get another pair if these were broken.

Pros: Light weight and comfortable

Cons: none as yet

Most comfortable earbuds I've ever owned

MoK from New York, NY on 6/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I owned the Klipsch S4i before and I loved the sound, however the wire frayed around the headphone jack and they needed to be replaced. I decided to get the rugged version because I use them on the elliptical and walking home from work. These definitely seem more durable than the regular S4i's and the sound and comfort is the same- which is excellent. There's plenty of bass and noise isolation, even in New York City. I especially like the rubberized wire because that, coupled with the clip that's included, produces almost no cord noise when walking. My only gripe about these is the size of the controller, which is huge. Definitely designed for a skier wearing gloves. I don't run with these but I can imagine the controller banging on your chest would get annoying.

Pros: Great sound, comfortable, durable

Cons: Controller is too big

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not a big fan of ear buds but once these are set properly and firmly in place, the sound quality is fantastic. I won't be using them for strenuous activity so I can't comment on whether they stay in place but for travel purposes they are quite good.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Several sets of ear tips insure a comfortable fit; fantastic sound, very clear with good highs and lows; phones stay in place; large in-line controller makes playback, volume control, phone calls and skipping forward or back very easy. Also includes a carry case.

Pros: Great sound; well-made, comfortable and stay-in-place.

Cons: None noticed so far

So far, so good

Papoter from Michigan on 12/29/2012

I just bought these a few days ago, so "so far, so good." I go through about 4-6 pairs of good headphones per year because I travel for my job and listen to books-on-tape non-stop (literally sometimes) and use my phone for work and personal. (I also always keep a cheap pair or two on hand as my back-ups). Because of their constant use/abuse headphones don't last me very long, so I have very high hopes for this "rugged" pair. I love the big control button as I am always fumbling a purse, a laptop, and a suitcase, so it's easy to find. I also like that it's in the center (vs. one side only). This means that I never have to figure out which side my controls are on when I need to answer a call or stop my book. So far the mic seems to be working well with phone calls -- they can hear me and I can hear them. My only concern so far is the connection to the phone. Because it goes straight in (vs. angled), it has already pulled out easily when I've caught the cord on something.......that has happened with the angled ones too, but this one just seems more vulnerable to it. I am also concerned about "bending" the cord when I wrap it to put it away. This could be the deciding factor for me, but only time will tell.

Pros: Sharp looking. Center Controls. Large, easy-to-find control button. Good sound. Fits well in the ear.

Cons: Not so happy about the connection to the phone (the jack). Only time will tell if this is an issue.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i use these in the gym while working out and the ear buds have a double rubber fitting tht help stay in the ear better, the sound quality is great. the microphone in the cord wirks great even though it hangs around 6 inched from the mouth. but quite honestly the sound quality is no better than $30 Sony's or Koss earphones that i purchsed in the past. the cheaper ones always breakafter a year or two, lets see how these hold up.

Pros: moister resistance, stay in the ear, clear microphone, sound quality

Cons: price

Good sound quality; not good for running

Enid from San Francisco, CA on 11/13/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, the sound quality is good; decent bass, though still a tiny bit tinny. When properly inserted, they block noise out-to an almost dangerous level, if you're working out outside. They do look cool; the orange/black is nice for an SFGiants fan like myself. But: there are too many deal breakers to working out with these. The in-line control is way too big and heavy to make these comfortable when running. Even when using the clip to attach the control to my shirt, they are still too weighed down, and partially because of where you have to put the clip. Segue to: the control is far too high up-it should be farther from the ears, and closer to the hands (I mean, you operate it with your hands, not your face). Also, the cord is too long and tangles. And to get the right fit with the earbuds, I have to really jam them in my ear canal so that they don't fall out. I know this is different for everyone, but these are not comfortable. Klipsch recommends wrapping the cords over your ear to help keep buds in, but I wear sunglasses and a baseball hat - no room on my ears for more. Lastly, I buy rugged headphones because I'm tough on 'em, and a feature I've found in others that this pair lacks is a right angle in the cord from the jack. While it's a bad idea to wrap your headphone cord around your MP3 player, I do it anyway because it's convenient, and having that right angle reduces the resulting stress on the wire at that point.

Pros: Cool colors; size of buttons on in-line controls; decent sound quality for the price

Cons: Weight, size and placement of in-line controls; earbud fit; cord length; right angle at jack would be nice

Klipsch Image S4i Rugged: ok, still work to do

Mike from Boise ID on 11/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Probably great headphones for some, but would not fit comfortably in my ears and stay in place, even just sitting at my desk. You could make them sound great by pushing and adjusting them, but that doesn't last long. Maybe they need a better (larger) selection of rubber tips. The blue color seemed more faded than the vivid colors seen in pictures on the web. The larger control/mic was heavy, and honestly, the ear buds that come with the new iPhone are better in that regard. This also made them prone to tangling. I returned them, and Crutchfield was great about that, exchange for another item on my wish list for the same price.

Pros: Sound was crisp and clear

Cons: lack of bass due to poor fit, heavy large control got in the way

Comfortable and durable

MikeK from Canton, MA on 9/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only rated the sound quality a 4-star but frankly the sound was better than I expected for such rugged heaqdphones. The ear buds are very comfortable and the cord materials do not tangle easily, which is nice as I use them in the gym. They've thus far held up well to sweat, are good looking, and again, sound better than expected for sport headphones. In my opinion, a good value on a quality set of sport headphones.

Pros: Comfort, sound, style, duirability.

Cons: None yet!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe what iv'e been missing. These things deliver amazing music clearness and great sound quality. They are equally comfortable and it is very easy to see the large manual volume control buttons. As usual Crutchfield service is beyond reproach.

Pros: 1. sound quality 2. comfort 3. stays put.

Cons: 1. manual control buttons too close to face.

"Rugged" is the keyword

Brownjuan from Lenexa, KS on 8/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After buying my wife her first pair of quality earbuds, she remarked how much she was enjoying music on her iPod. Only months later, those earbuds quit working. They were replaced by these Klipsch S4i Rugged earbuds and she is happy once again. I think the key is to keep our high schoolers from using them! Good looks, good sounds, not a ridiculous price point. What's not to like?

Pros: Sound, build quality, yellow color.

Cons: Keep away from kids who don't care for them! (Kidding)

Unlike other headsets, the S4i positions its mic and remote at the cable yoke to create a more natural feel when answering calls and controlling music. Big controls for big fun

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 8/20/2012 3:56:00 PM

What do I like best about these headphones? The fact that I don't have to grope around for the in-line controls. It's tough to miss the bold colors of the controls. They're also big enough to find by feel almost immediately. And the buttons are raised, so I have no trouble distinguising the big plus (skip ahead) from the big triangle (play) from the big minus (skip back). Now these are controls that make sense when I'm running or my attention's otherwise engaged elsewhere.
