About the Klipsch HD Theater SB 3

Woody Sherman
Scene: movie night at your house. We're ratcheted up to maximum suspense. The hero, hiding from the bad guys, mutters something in a low-but-intense tone. Do you turn to your family and friends and say, "what'd he say?" Find the remote. Back it up. Feel the suspense evaporate.

We won't say that'll never happen again if you choose this Klipsch HD Theater SB 3 for your entertainment room, but we're nearly certain it'll be an extreme rarity. That's because the SB 3's horn-loaded design infuses this sound bar/subwoofer combo with enhanced intelligibility. Klipsch's signature full, defined midrange helps to enhance the overall clarity coming from your home theater, letting you enjoy the feeling of being fully involved with your entertainment experience.

The robust, 10" downward-firing wireless subwoofer will add believability to your movies, music, and video games as well. Its wireless design means you'll have easy placement options in your listening space that you might not have with a wired system, though bear in mind you will need to connect to AC power. 300 watts of peak power give your speakers everything they need to make commanding sound and music without audible distortion.

    Features

Overview: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 Soundbar + Subwoofer Speaker System improves your television and movie sound by simulating a multi-speaker surround sound system. It instantly upgrades your TV sound without requiring a separate receiver and multiple speakers. The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 consists of a self-powered soundbar speaker and a 10" wireless powered subwoofer, combining for 300-watts (Peak) of power. The system features an elegant black satin finish to blend in with your TV and decor.

Self-Powered Soundbar w/ Horn-Loaded Technology: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 includes a self-powered Soundbar speaker. The SB-3's Soundbar speaker utilizes horn-loading technology designed to send sound more directly to the listening area. By incorporating highly efficient horn-loaded technology into the SB-3 all sounds are more detailed, dialogue clarity is significantly improved, and overall output is maximized to cover even the largest listening areas. The Soundbar speaker utilizes two lightweight 0.78" aluminum tweeter diaphragms for distinctive high-frequency detail, coupled with four 3.5" long-throw IMG (injected molded graphite) woofers for extended mid-bass response. The tweeters are mated to dual 90° x 90° Tractrix Horns to both reduce distortion and to increase dispersion more directly to the main listening area. Reduced distortion increases sonic detail while controlled dispersion sends more sound to the listening area for greater accuracy and openness.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 includes a wireless powered subwoofer with a 10" down-firing fiber composite woofer in a ported enclosure (with dual rear-firing ports). The sophisticated, 2.4 GHz technology automatically connects the soundbar and subwoofer together wirelessly (wireless range of up to 50'). Subwoofer cabinet construction is critical for proper bass reproduction. Particleboard or, even worse, plastic subwoofer cabinets resonate in a manner that severely distorts bass, causing it to sound "boomy". The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 subwoofer uses a very solid MDF cabinet to prevent unwanted vibration and distortion. The wireless powered subwoofer has an independent volume control dial located on its rear-panel.

3D Surround Mode: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 features a selectable 3D Surround Mode designed to simulate the effect of a surround sound system. This effect will work at multiple listening positions in your room.

Digital + Analog Connection: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 is designed to quickly connect to most TV's using either a digital optical (toslink) connection or an analog (RCA) hookup. Using the digital optical connection, the built-in Dolby Digital decoder accepts sound from both the TV and any device (such as a DVD/Blu-ray player or Cable/Satellite receiver) hooked up to the TV. There is also both a 3.5 mm input, which can also be used to hook an MP3 player or other music device up to, and an RCA left/right input.

Remote Control: You can program the Klipsch HD Theater SB-3's Volume Up/Down and Mute functions into your existing TV remote for further ease-of-operation. You also have the option of controlling all functions of the system with the included IR remote control.

Mounting Options: The soundbar speaker can be positioned on a shelf or stand using the supplied L-shaped feet. It can also be wall-mounted using its dual keyhole slots and included easy-to-use template. The keyhole spacing is 32.5". The minimal 3" soundbar depth aesthetically matches either a wall-mounted or table-top mounted TV.

Can you hook up a Polk PWS108 subwoofer directly into this soundbar in place of the wireless one?

Does the soundbar hook up to a receiver ?

I sure it would through an optical output on the receiver, however, mine is hooked up directly to the TV. Your audio signal may be better through a receiver however as most tv's don't output 5.1 surround. At least that is what I read on cnet.

Klipsch sound bar has RCA jacks and digital audio inputs so if your receiver supports one of these (and it should definitely have RCA jacks, then you can hook up the Klipsch.

I don't know; I hooked mine directly to a 60" Samsung smart TV. It works great and the sound is good. I had a full surround in the last house, and it is not the same, but still very good. I was somewhat surprised that the 'smart' TV took over control of the sound bar, turning it up/down and on/off with the TV control. It also took over the Blue Ray player, switching from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 without me having to do anything but put the DVD in the player. I am not sure why you would want to run the sound bar through your receiver.

Yes, I have mine hooked up to my Yamaha receiver. You can hook it up with RCA cables, an optical cable, or a headphone jack.
    brian  Dec 10, 2013

It could, it has RCA inputs, it also has a toslink input if you prefer. It also has an 1/8" input if you want to run your I-Pod, etc through it.

I did not hook it up to a receiver...bought it so I wouldn't need the receiver. The sound is amazing...it's hooked directly to my Sony XBR 46 (2009 model). I loved my receiver and 7 speaker surround sound but this sound bar has me questioning going back to that setup unless you have a large theater room. I'm using the sound bar in a 30' x 20' room.

    No.

No , it hooks up directly to your TV using the digital audio jack, the sub woofer just needs to be plugged in to a wall outlet as it is wireless
    greg  Dec 10, 2013

No... the sound bar connects directly to the TV via an optical cable. Really like the sound bar, but am disappointed in the sub-woofer.

    No
    joann  Dec 10, 2013

It has it's own amplifier and power so you just plug it into a wall outlet then plug in your optical audio cable and the soundbar decodes it. So no you don't need a receiver
