Our take on the Klipsch HD Theater SB 3

by Woody Sherman
Klipsch

Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Scene: movie night at your house. We're ratcheted up to maximum suspense. The hero, hiding from the bad guys, mutters something in a low-but-intense tone. Do you turn to your family and friends and say, "what'd he say?" Find the remote. Back it up. Feel the suspense evaporate.

We won't say that'll never happen again if you choose this Klipsch HD Theater SB 3 for your entertainment room, but we're nearly certain it'll be an extreme rarity. That's because the SB 3's horn-loaded design infuses this sound bar/subwoofer combo with enhanced intelligibility. Klipsch's signature full, defined midrange helps to enhance the overall clarity coming from your home theater, letting you enjoy the feeling of being fully involved with your entertainment experience.

The robust, 10" downward-firing wireless subwoofer will add believability to your movies, music, and video games as well. Its wireless design means you'll have easy placement options in your listening space that you might not have with a wired system, though bear in mind you will need to connect to AC power. 300 watts of peak power give your speakers everything they need to make commanding sound and music without audible distortion.

    Features

Overview: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 Soundbar + Subwoofer Speaker System improves your television and movie sound by simulating a multi-speaker surround sound system. It instantly upgrades your TV sound without requiring a separate receiver and multiple speakers. The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 consists of a self-powered soundbar speaker and a 10" wireless powered subwoofer, combining for 300-watts (Peak) of power. The system features an elegant black satin finish to blend in with your TV and decor.

Self-Powered Soundbar w/ Horn-Loaded Technology: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 includes a self-powered Soundbar speaker. The SB-3's Soundbar speaker utilizes horn-loading technology designed to send sound more directly to the listening area. By incorporating highly efficient horn-loaded technology into the SB-3 all sounds are more detailed, dialogue clarity is significantly improved, and overall output is maximized to cover even the largest listening areas. The Soundbar speaker utilizes two lightweight 0.78" aluminum tweeter diaphragms for distinctive high-frequency detail, coupled with four 3.5" long-throw IMG (injected molded graphite) woofers for extended mid-bass response. The tweeters are mated to dual 90° x 90° Tractrix Horns to both reduce distortion and to increase dispersion more directly to the main listening area. Reduced distortion increases sonic detail while controlled dispersion sends more sound to the listening area for greater accuracy and openness.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 includes a wireless powered subwoofer with a 10" down-firing fiber composite woofer in a ported enclosure (with dual rear-firing ports). The sophisticated, 2.4 GHz technology automatically connects the soundbar and subwoofer together wirelessly (wireless range of up to 50'). Subwoofer cabinet construction is critical for proper bass reproduction. Particleboard or, even worse, plastic subwoofer cabinets resonate in a manner that severely distorts bass, causing it to sound "boomy". The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 subwoofer uses a very solid MDF cabinet to prevent unwanted vibration and distortion. The wireless powered subwoofer has an independent volume control dial located on its rear-panel.

3D Surround Mode: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 features a selectable 3D Surround Mode designed to simulate the effect of a surround sound system. This effect will work at multiple listening positions in your room.

Digital + Analog Connection: The Klipsch HD Theater SB-3 is designed to quickly connect to most TV's using either a digital optical (toslink) connection or an analog (RCA) hookup. Using the digital optical connection, the built-in Dolby Digital decoder accepts sound from both the TV and any device (such as a DVD/Blu-ray player or Cable/Satellite receiver) hooked up to the TV. There is also both a 3.5 mm input, which can also be used to hook an MP3 player or other music device up to, and an RCA left/right input.

Remote Control: You can program the Klipsch HD Theater SB-3's Volume Up/Down and Mute functions into your existing TV remote for further ease-of-operation. You also have the option of controlling all functions of the system with the included IR remote control.

Mounting Options: The soundbar speaker can be positioned on a shelf or stand using the supplied L-shaped feet. It can also be wall-mounted using its dual keyhole slots and included easy-to-use template. The keyhole spacing is 32.5". The minimal 3" soundbar depth aesthetically matches either a wall-mounted or table-top mounted TV.

A must have for flat screens!

Written By Robert Montgomery, KENTUCKY on Thursday, June 12, 2014

We were looking to upgrade the built-in speakers on our Samsung 60 inch lcd tv. I was very impressed with the Klipsch pro media 2.1 system we have on our computer so I thought I'd give their SB3 soundbar a whirl. I wasn't disappointed. Great sound and a VAST improvement over the built-in sound of the tv. Can really rock the room if you're so inclined. Not audiophile quality but quite a bit more punch and presence than any tv sound system I've encountered. About the only thing there is to complain about is the lack of Bluetooth for iPod or phone connectivity. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, however I feel it was money well spent.
    Pros:
Compact, self-contained, attractive and easy to hook up.
    Cons:
No Bluetooth. I could have used a longer power cord on the soundbar (low voltage) for my particular installation.

Sound quality approaches that of higher end systems but at a much more attractive price point. It's a sound bar, not 5.1 or 7.1, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Set-up was a snap and vastly improves the stock listening experience. Would have given 5 stars if Bluetooth or Airplay was an option.
    Pros:
Sound quality, price relative to Bose. Set-up.
    Cons:
    No wireless connectivity for smartphones

Best you can get with just one spreaker

Great soundbar! I was hesitant to give a 5 start rating because In my mind I'm still comparing it to my previous 5.1 sound system which isn't really fair.

This is probably the best sound you can get from just a soundbar + sub. We are very happy with the product! Just remember that its not going to beat the sound of a multi speaker surround sound setup.
    Pros:
Easy to setup. It really couldn't be easier Sound quality is very good Wireless sub is nice and can be tucked out of the way easily Looks really great sitting under the tv. I now have about a mile less of wires and cables after replacing my old system
    Cons:
Bluetooth might be nice, but there is a headphone jack on the side for your iphone / ipod No ability to wirelessly connect additional speakers later

The clarity and intensity of this system is incredible. At the lowest volume setting, speech is clearly heard...and at maximum volume, there is absolutely no distortion. The power is awesome!
    Pros:
Tons of power, crystal clarity, and top-notch workmanship in an attractive package.
    Cons:
Volume control could be better. It is not infinitely variable, but instead, steps up or down in increments.

I don't think it matches 5.1 surround sound, but it greatly improves the TV experience. It is the next best thing to a good surround sound and probably beats the cheaper surround sounds. It is clear and has great bass response from the wireless subwoofer.
    Pros:
    Sound, looks
    Cons:
Had a wire missing which Crutchfield overnighted to me. Crutchfield is the best!

    Eventually, pretty good

Written By RickS, Elkridge, MD on Monday, May 20, 2013

Well, after the 3rd attempt to send me one that worked...it sounded pretty good. The first had a very audible buzzing from one of the speakers in the sound bar. The second attempt, Crutchfield sent a replacement soundbar that wouldn't send a signal to the subwoofer. They claimed that it should have worked but I have to believe that the wireless signals vary from pair to pair (sound bar/sub woofer pairs). Anyway, Crutchfield eventually sent an entirely new soundbar/subwoofer.
    Pros:
Actually sounds pretty good. It is surprisingly loud and while its no 7.2 quality system, for easy everyday use to replace bad flat screen sound it does the job very well.
    Cons:
Expensive, poor quality control. HUGE PACKAGING!

Sounds good--not great--but simple to hook up and mount. Nice complement to the Samsung wide screen TV.

Easy to link wireless subwoofer, but doesn't seem to give a lot of bass in normal TV, better with music.

Overall, a low hassle alternative to an av receiver and speakers.
    Pros:
Easy to install, flexibility of how to link the audio from TV
    Cons:
sound is good, but not great.

Great sound, and great looks. works flawlessly and very easy to set up. really made the dialog clearer on TV and movies where before it sounded like everyone was mumbling and it almost sounds like surround sound on action movies

    Cons:
a little expensive, but seems worth it so far

    Klipsch SB 3 Sound Bar

Written By Mike S, Kennewick, Washington on Tuesday, March 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered and set up the Klipsch Icon SB-1 Sound Bar for our family room. Easy setup with all necessary items for install. Unfortunately through no fault of the sound bar it didn't fill the bill for us. The smaller size of our room, large fireplace and windows didn't seem to allow the voice clarity we require. Distance from the speaker did enhance the sound. In defense of this equipment part of the issue is of course the entertainment media now being broadcast with too much background sounds and whispering voices. The return to Crutchfield was courteous, effortless and speedy. Did we resolve our issue? Yes; we had to reconfigure to a surround sound system and ordered from Crutchfield, the Bose Acoustimass 10. Thanks to Crutchfield's Clara, Lola and Chance for your assistance. Great company
    Pros:
Well made, a very nice product that delivers for what its designed to do..great performer
    Cons:
The small remote is too sensitive not allowing small changes to the sound.

    Pleasantly Surprised

Written By Steve11, CC, Indiana on Friday, February 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've heard numerous other models in a tech store setting and had leaned towards Klipsch over the rest, but I hadn't heard this model. I was not disappointed. Well packaged, simple setup and had all of the cables I needed. Short of UPS dropping the ball on the delivery date (missed the Super bowl), this was one of my best purchases of the year. I'm no sound tech, but I'm not sure you could spend less and get better sound, either from a soundbar or a standard system.
    Pros:
Easy setup. Best soundbar I've heard. Really cleaned up the living room - no more tuners, speakers, wires. Programmed our Dish remote with ease.
    Cons:
Sometimes the volume doesn't find a happy medium (too high or low). This may be a Dish remote issue. I haven't used the remote that came with the SB3. After a week of use, this doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.

    Klipsh SB3

Written By LennyM, Norfolk, MA on Thursday, December 27, 2012

I've always been impressed with Klipsch sound quality, and so I tried this SB3 to improve our TV experience. Set-up was very easy, although I needed to call tech support to learn that there are little plastic end protectors on one of the cables...and they helped immediately. The sound bar is good, but I have nothing to compare it to. The sub-woofer makes the system. And the wireless aspect of the sub makes it very convenient and easy to set up. It sits in front of the TV and is tall enough to block the IR signal. So, you have to stand up to turn the TV on and off. I may use the mounds to fasten it to the front of the TV stand, thereby eliminating this line of site problem. My biggest complaint is the coarse volume control. In a normal listening environment, one level is too soft and the next one up is too load. This may ultimately doom this purchase in my house.
    Pros:
Pretty good sound, great base, easy install.
    Cons:
No fine adjustment of volume. Often either too soft or too load.

    Klipsch SB3

Written By Anonymous, Charleston on Wednesday, December 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't have much experience with sound bars, specifically. But I have plenty with speakers in general. The ease of setup was ideal, as it was a gift for someone seeking a system with few wires and lack of technical skill to enjoy. Design is sleek and matches any decor. The sound is beautiful. With movies, full and clean. 3d sound feature is a bit gimmicky, but what system these days doesn't come with something to that effect? Tested it with some full range dance music using the 3.5 mm jack: at max volume there was ZERO distortion. Very impressive. It filled the living room of an A frame house easily. The down firing sub is well built, as are the mid cones and tweeters (upgraded recently to horn loaded tweeters from the SB 1). $800 seems steep, but factoring in overall quality, ease of use (10 minute setup), and attractive design, I would recommend.

    Awesome soundbar

Written By DW, Plainfield, IL on Sunday, November 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this sound bar. I've had this for less than a week, but so far its the best I've heard. Great for watching movies. It has fantastic sound. The bass is full. I am very happy I bought this one. Best of all the sound bars I've heard (Polk 6000, HK SB16). It is more expensive than other sound bars, but probably worth it.
    Pros:
    Great for Movies. Great sub-woofer.
    Cons:
If you can call it a negative, the sound bar is 44 inches long. Massive.

Does this unit have an IR repeater? From the looks of it, it will block the IR remote control port which is located near the bottom left of my Sony TV. Thanks in advance. [ Larry S  Dec 24, 2013 ]

    • I don't see any mention of an IR repeater in the product information. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Can you hook up a Polk PWS108 subwoofer directly into this soundbar in place of the wireless one? [ Richard  Dec 10, 2013 ]

    • This soundbar does not feature an output for connecting a wired subwoofer. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 11, 2013 ]
Does the soundbar hook up to a receiver ? [ Tyler  Dec 09, 2013 ]
    11 answers
    • I sure it would through an optical output on the receiver, however, mine is hooked up directly to the TV. Your audio signal may be better through a receiver however as most tv's don't output 5.1 surround. At least that is what I read on cnet. [ SCOTT   Dec 20, 2013 ]
    • Klipsch sound bar has RCA jacks and digital audio inputs so if your receiver supports one of these (and it should definitely have RCA jacks, then you can hook up the Klipsch. [ GLEN   Dec 12, 2013 ]
    • I don't know; I hooked mine directly to a 60" Samsung smart TV. It works great and the sound is good. I had a full surround in the last house, and it is not the same, but still very good. I was somewhat surprised that the 'smart' TV took over control of the sound bar, turning it up/down and on/off with the TV control. It also took over the Blue Ray player, switching from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 without me having to do anything but put the DVD in the player. I am not sure why you would want to run the sound bar through your receiver. [ ROY   Dec 11, 2013 ]
    • Yes, I have mine hooked up to my Yamaha receiver. You can hook it up with RCA cables, an optical cable, or a headphone jack. [ BRIAN   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • It could, it has RCA inputs, it also has a toslink input if you prefer. It also has an 1/8" input if you want to run your I-Pod, etc through it. [ RICHARD   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • I did not hook it up to a receiver...bought it so I wouldn't need the receiver. The sound is amazing...it's hooked directly to my Sony XBR 46 (2009 model). I loved my receiver and 7 speaker surround sound but this sound bar has me questioning going back to that setup unless you have a large theater room. I'm using the sound bar in a 30' x 20' room. [ JAMES   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • No. [ KIM   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • No , it hooks up directly to your TV using the digital audio jack, the sub woofer just needs to be plugged in to a wall outlet as it is wireless [ GREG   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • No... the sound bar connects directly to the TV via an optical cable. Really like the sound bar, but am disappointed in the sub-woofer. [ R BRUCE   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • No [ JOANN   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • It has it's own amplifier and power so you just plug it into a wall outlet then plug in your optical audio cable and the soundbar decodes it. So no you don't need a receiver [ NICK   Dec 10, 2013 ]
