ZVOX's compact Z-Base 525 is the perfect addition to a bedroom TV or PC. This one-piece system houses five full-range speakers and a high-output woofer, giving you dramatically improved sound with your TV shows, movies, and computer games. Built-in amplification means you won't need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. The Z-Base 525 is designed to serve as a base for most computer monitors, and flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 42". And setup couldn't be simpler — there's just one cable to plug into your TV or computer.

Virtual surround sound from a single speaker
The Z-Base 525 creates virtual surround effects by manipulating the phase and timing of each channel, sending signals to separate drivers at the appropriate moment. This expands the soundstage and tricks your ears into thinking that sounds are coming from points throughout your room. Control the Z-Base 525 from your favorite chair with the included remote. Signal-sensing on/off circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV or monitor.

Product Highlights:

  • serves as a platform for most flat-panel TVs up to 42" or for computer monitors — TV base should not exceed 23"W or 12-1/2"D, and TV/monitor should not exceed 90 lbs.

Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

ZVOX Z Base 525

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. I am using it in a small room and the sound is fantastic. I also like the fact that the TV can sit on top of the unit. The unit is head and shoulders above any comparably priced sound bar.

Excellent for bedroom or small living room

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought this for my master bedroom. It sits under a 37" flat panel. It
is a great improvement from the TV speakers and takes up very little space. I
would not use this as my main sound source in a living room or basement....not
enough bass for that or stereo separation. I am interested in trying the larger
model for this, however.

Overall, this unit performs as expected.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this in a small room( office) with a new 32" Sony TV with internet
features. It is compact, easy to set up and with a little tweaking the sound is
amazing with TV, Pandora and movies. I recommend it without reservations. Got
here very quickly from Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the zvox 525 for about 6 months now. I got a great deal on an open box item from
crutchfield. I use it with a Sony 46"tv in a moderately sized area.

I must say I love it. When you are comparing, half empty or half full, you either look at the
tremendous step up from the lousy LCD tv speakers or a more compact however less
featured sound of a full theater sound system. I love the look and the fact it sits neatly
under the tv, the sound (especially voice) so much clearer. I was also looking for a set of
iPod speakers that I could use and with the audio input, the sound is great as well.

I use a logitech harmony one remote to control zvox and rest of my equipment.

There are times depending on the movie that I find myself tweaking the sound to taste but
overall this is a great buy and great value. I would recommend.

I have a new tv but it does not have the audio out that the Zbox needs, it only has fiber optic out and the Zbox does not take this input so unfortunately I was not able to get the Zbox to work for me.

Performs as Advertised and that's Good!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm the guy that researches something to death and then takes forever to make a
decision. The ZVOX 525 performs as advertised. If you are an audiophile, you
aren't shopping in this aisle. But for the rest of us, it's OK to be here. The
525 set up in under 2 minutes. The power cord and the audio cord, that's it.
Follow the directions in the manual. Although you cannot control the 525 with
an all-in-one remote for the Phasecue surround sound feature and Treble and
Subwoofer, that doesn't matter to us. We can control the volume of the 525 with
our Logitech Harmony remote. We found a pleasant sound setting for the 525 and
we were good to go. If we want to make changes every so often, just use the
525's remote. The Auto On/Off feature is nice. Turning on/off when the HDTV
turns on/off is convenient. It sits neatly under the HDTV and looks like it
belongs. The sound quality is far superior to the HDTV speakers. Listening to
the Smooth Jazz station was really enjoyable. We would buy another one. No
wires running across the room and no wireless subwoofer that could be subject to
interference. One tidy box with exceptional performance for the money and the
size. If you are looking for theater sound, go elsewhere. If you seek a simple
sound solution with quick setup and wonderful sound, the 525 may just be your
solution, too. We have no problem recommending the 525 to others.

All around not the best set up

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew going in that the speakers we not going to give me great surround, if any at all, so that isn't the problem. Being a stand for the TV is nice, but that is really all that is has going for it. The sub out does not have a crossover so the bass gets lost in the highs with my sub. The remote control is terrible and works only half the time even when you are right in front of it. It is also impossible to run it with a universal remote. And with no optical input, more than likely will not be able to run it with your tv remote. The sound is ok, nothing great, and when you use the adjustment for the surround it just makes the background noise really loud, and the voices quiet to the point you can't understand them. If I would do it over I would go with a more name brand product that is more compatible with other products.

Great speaker

Written By Bob, Ankeny, IA on Sunday, January 24, 2010

I am very pleased with the performance of the ZVOX 525. Used as the base for my Sony flat screen, you forget that you have an extra device, and only hear the great sound.

When it arrived, it wouldn't work properly. The Crutchfield staff was extremely helpful and shipped a new speaker that same day. When the new speaker arrived, I just tried the new remote and it turned out that the old remote was defective and I had the original speaker working in about two minutes. I returned the defective remote along with the extra speaker (at no cost to me -- thanks Crutchfield) and I've been a happy camper ever since.

The ZVOX has a rich sound that far outperforms the stock tv speakers and makes movies, music and even broadcast shows more enjoyable. I'm quite happy with the purchase.

Again, special kudos to the Crutchfield staff for the outstanding customer service.

Exactly What I Needed, Thanks ZVOX.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 32" HDTV in a small room, 9x11'. It has SRS WOW surround which does a pretty good job simulating surround effects. The Z-base 525 does as good and is adjustable. I've been looking for options to get back the bass for a year. I've considered soundbar and sub systems, but did not want to have to install a shelf for the Bar or mount the Bar on the wall (xtra $$ and work). Then, I have to find a place for the sub. Solution Z-base. Then the new 525 model comes out. Guts of the 550 in a smaller Box. Test movie "The Fifth Element", a few minutes in the character throws poison water from a cup to my left and I hear the water splash towards the left. My settings: VOL 50-75%, Phasecue 50-100% fills the small room with rich, deep sound. I do own a $3,000 real surround system in my living room. Pro's: solid unit , looks HQ, brings back the bass( I do feel a sep. sub is NOT needed at all), Ez setup & ops, dialogue clear and centered. Power Brick (switch-mode type) small(4-1/4x2x1-3/8H), efficient, costs more, no excess heat. Cons: Only minor-remote occasionly finicky. a small twist of the wrist fixes. it DOES work off angle and at distance. I needed to secure/move loose items in my TV stand-stuff rattles from the bass. Check out the ZVOX website- more info. I wish I had discovered ZVOX a year ago. My rating 97 of 100.

Product Research

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base525 is a single-cabinet audio system for use with your high-definition flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue virtual surround sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

Placement: Most 26"-46" flat panel TVs can be placed directly on the Z-Base525. The TV should be 90 pounds or less and the base should not exceed 23" wide x 12.5" deep.

PhaseCue: The proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround sound system manipulates the phase of the separate channels to fool the ear into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. You can control the size of the sound stage and the amount of virtual surround effect using the included remote control. Dynamic soundtracks from movies and live recorded music programs provide a rich, 3-dimensional sound, while the surround effect is somewhat less with TV programs and newscasts.

Note: While the surround experience isn't the same as high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much more pleasing than simply using the TV's built-in speakers.

Speaker Configuration: The ZVOX Z-Base525 uses five Ferrofluid cooled 2" main speaker drivers with neodymium magnets. The drivers use the Infinite Compliance system, which connects the outer two speakers with an acoustic tube, to create a big sound from a small cabinet. The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing the unit to be placed near a CRT TV or monitor.

Subwoofer: In addition to the five main speakers, the Z-Base525 has a down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure. An optional powered subwoofer can be connected via the single rear-panel RCA output. The subwoofer output is full range.

Power Output: The ZVOX Z-Base525 has a built in 60 watt amplifier that drives all of the speakers. The ZVOX Z-Base525 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response

Cabinet Design: The ZVOX Z-Base525 employs a hand-built, cross-braced wood (MDF) cabinet with beautiful hand-lacquered high-gloss black end panels. The top of the Z-Base525 is finished in rugged, scratch-resistant black vinyl that is less likely to be marred by objects such as the TV placed on its surface.

Auto Power: The Z-Base525 has an auto-on/off power circuit. The power automatically turns on when an audio signal is sensed (the power LED changes from green to blue). When you turn off the audio source, the Z-Base525's power will automatically turn off after approximately three minutes with no signal. There is also a power button on the remote to override the auto power circuit and a master power switch on the back panel.

Inputs/Outputs: The ZVOX Z-Base525 has two pair of RCA inputs on the rear panel. Input 1 is for connecting your TV, PC, or other audio source; input 2 acts as a mixing input, you'll hear both simultaneously. A single RCA output allows you to connect an optional powered subwoofer.

Remote: The included remote has controls for power, mute, volume, PhaseCue effect level, subwoofer output, and treble level.

Connecting To Your TV: It is recommended that you connect the Z-Base525 to the audio output of your TV. If your TV's audio outputs can be set to Variable, you can use your TV's remote control to adjust the volume. If not, use the Z-Base525's remote to control the volume.
