About the ZVOX SoundBase 580

ZVOX brings you room-filling home theater sound — without a room full of speakers and wires — with the SoundBase 580. Just place it on your TV stand or A/V cabinet, set your flat-panel TV on top, and connect one cable — you've just installed a high-performance TV sound system in under 10 minutes. Flexible connection capabilities include analog and digital audio inputs, for both newer and older TVs and gear. This feature enables it to receive 5.1-channel surround signals from select over-the-air broadcasts or from your Blu-ray or DVD discs.

A low-profile, one-box solution
This one-piece system houses five 3-3/4" full-range speakers, two high-output 6-1/2" woofers, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. The 580 is designed to serve as a base for most flat-panel TVs with screen sizes from 40" to 65".

Dialogue welcome. Blaring commercials — not so much.
If you can't hear the voices clearly, you miss out on the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives new clarity and prominence to human voices. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats when they go to a commercial break. Thanks to the Output Leveling feature, the 580 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax and enjoy the show.

Convenient features
The SoundBase 580 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. Its front-panel display lights up from behind the front cloth surround then disappears when not in use. And it learns the commands of your current TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

Features

Overview: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing (enhanced by a Dolby Digital decoder) to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 32"-72" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the SoundBase 580. The television should weigh 160 1bs or less The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 35" (w) x 15.5" (d).

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 120 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Five 3.25" Drivers: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 uses five 3.25" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

Dual 6.25" Subwoofers: In addition to the five main speakers, the SoundBase 580 has two down firing high-mass, long-throw 6.25" subwoofers in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Suround Sound: The SoundBase 580 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.
Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Dolby Digital: The unit's two digital inputs work with the built-in Dolby Digital decoder for improved virtual surround performance.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet with Hand-Lacquered Side Panels: The SoundBase 580 features a hand-built cabinet of heavy MDF with beautiful hand-lacquered high gloss end panels. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The SoundBase 580 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu Ray player that is not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The bass control has a range from -8 to 4. The treble control has a range from -4 to 4.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass & treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new SoundBase 580 can be programmed to respond to your remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume, mute, power and input functions of the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The SoundBase 580 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

Connections

One Cable Connection: The SoundBase 580 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 offers analog and digital audio inputs.

  • Digital Input: The SoundBase 580 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept either 2-channel PCM or Dolby Digital bitstream signals.
  • Analog Input: The SoundBase 580 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input.

Subwoofer Output: An optional powered subwoofer can be connected using the full-range single RCA Sub Output on the back panel.

Remote Control Input: This jack is reserved for ZVOX service only.

Q
What were the "scrach & dent" damages like? Are they really bad or barely visible?

The InfraRed sensor for the remote control does not have a very wide angle when you are sitting a little to the side of the box. Has anyone else noticed this and have you found a fix? Thanks

Tom W. I have had my ZVOX 580 for some time now. It has been installed in two separate locations - my sound room and later in my bedroom . Both locations complemented widescreen televisions. In each instance, I did not have infrared problems with the remote commanding the 580. I would suggest three things for you: (1) make sure your are pointing DIRECTLY at the infrared sensor on the 580. Make sure there are no obstacles between your remote and the 580 (anything in front of your 580?) (2) IF there are no obstacles as noted in (1) and the 580 still fails to command - then CORRECTLY change the batteries. (3) Is your 580 CORRECTLY connected to your tv receiver? Check! These three checks should remedy most infrared remote problems. If they do not, ask the ZVOX folks for a remote swap, particularly if 1 and 2 doesn't fix your concerns, Since your 580 does intermittently respond, I think it more of a remote issue than the 580 unit itself. I've noticed the same thing I just make sure the remote is pointed straight at the box. I will say that's the only issue I've had, the thing works great other wise I would highly recommend this unit to any one that has the room for it. You could maybe try a infra red repeater if its a real issue for you. Chad

I use the dish network 722 dvr to control the volume, It is an RF remote and I have it programmed to work with the Zvox. Off axis, maybe 30 degrees, the dish volume indicator will show functioning but the zvox, which is analog wired to the tv will not work. I tried a cheap IR blaster but it did not make much difference. Zvox cust.support told me sometimes the ir sensor in the 580 will be off center and cause this problem, but I am not exactly sure where the IR sensor in the Zvox 580 is. Thanks for the response.
thomas  Apr 28, 2014
A
I have not experienced the wide angle issue you referenced. I have a Samsung TV and control the the volume using the TV remote. I only use the ZVOX remote to turn the box on and to change the functions.
s r  Apr 28, 2014

The remote for the 580 is pretty much a point and click remote. If you are more then 20-30 degrees off center, it will probably skip. Anywhere from straight on to 20 degrees off center, you should be good. I have heard & read from others pretty much the same thing. Personally, I never sit more then 15 degrees off, so I just don't have the stated problem. Also, I don't use the 580 remote much. I have pretty much, set it & forget it. You got the remote, grab that Good Center Seat, and be happy.

Yes, it comes with one cable, but we purchased a better cable to get the best sound possible. I'm enjoying my Z=Base very much and am glad I purchased it.

Yes the wires needed to hook up the tv is included. I used the optical cable nad it worked great.
ronald h  Dec 24, 2013

It comes with the standard RCA (red & white) audio cables... that should be all you need.. take care!
craig a  Dec 24, 2013

The Z-580 comes with RCA cables but not the digital cables which most newer flat screens use
gary l  Dec 24, 2013

The important cable, not supplied, is the optical digital cable. You can use other cables for your audio, but I always go with the digital.

Unfortunately I can't give you a good answer - I don't remember if cables were included but I didn't purchase any with this speaker.

I have mine hooked up via a optical cable, which I had to purchase -- I don't recall this unit coming with any cables except for the power cable --

The only cable that came with the package was the power cable. I purchased an optical cable when I ordered mine. I asked this question and no one knew so I went ahead and ordered one. Lucky

No
raul  Dec 23, 2013
A
No. You only need one cable but the type depends on your TV. If your TV has an optical digital output, that is the best choice. You will have to buy an optical digital cable (also called toslink). Next best choice is coaxial digital. If your TV has a coaxial digital output you can use any cable with RCA-style connecting plugs. If you have an older TV which has neither of these outputs you will need a standard analog audio cable with red and white wires and RCA-style connecting plugs. I have been using this system for seven months and consider it to be an outstanding product

I think it came with an RCA cable. You will like this speaker. I am exceeding satisfied.
arnold  Dec 23, 2013

No! Each TV requires A cable(one cable) to suit your INPUT area of same. PS/ My 65" Samsung(8000 series) sits perfectly on the box and all my old speakers are history.

Q
I read that the 580 was incompatible with external powered subwoofers. Is this true or has this issue been corrected? If so, can you recommend a good subwoofer in the $200 range? Thanks, Kevin Q.

A
Subwoofer Output: An optional powered subwoofer can be connected using the full-range single RCA Sub Output on the back panel. We have a great deal right now on the PS38 subwoofer: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108PS38BK/Infinity-Primus-PS38.html

Can this speaker be hooked directly to your cable box (ATT U-Verse) or does this have be connected through the TV?

A
I had a cable box but connected to t v and cable box, at least time warner.
patricia  Dec 09, 2013
A
I think you need to read the setup instructions. Hook the cable into the Sony and use an HDMI cable to connect to the TV. It works great.
jerry  Dec 07, 2013
A
This will depend slightly on the connections coming out of your cable box. If your cable box has audio outputs (analog or digital) then you can connect those directly to this unit.

Q
I recently purchased a 65" Samsung TV model 7100. Will the stand fit on the ZVOX 580? I have a 4 year old and am worried about stability of the TV on the box.
patrick  Nov 26, 2013
1 answer
A
The Samsung 65" TV will work great with this base. Stability of TVs around children is a very real concern. I would recommend a safety strap to help ensure that the TV cannot tip (whether it is on a base like this or not). The Sanus ELM701 is the one recommended for your TV.
