Dialogue reclaimed, commercials tamed

If you can't hear what the actors are saying, it's nearly impossible to follow the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives voices new clarity and prominence. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats when they go to a commercial break. Thanks to the output leveling feature, the SoundBase 220 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax.

ZVOX Z-Base V220

Solid performance, sturdy support

This one-piece system houses three full-range speakers, a high-output woofer, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. Plus, the 220 is designed to serve as a convenient base for smaller flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 32". Even older TVs sit perfectly atop this sturdy wooden cabinet that can support up to 120 lbs. Place the SoundBase directly underneath your TV and you won't have to worry about making extra room for it on your entertainment stand.

Loaded with convenient features

The SoundBase 220 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. Its front-panel display lights up from behind the front cloth grille to show you volume and mode then disappears when not in use. The system also learns the commands of your TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

Features

Overview: The ZVOX SoundBase 220 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 19"-27" flat-panel TVs (and some 32" TVs) can be placed directly on top the SoundBase 220. The television should weigh 70 pounds or less. The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 16" width or 13" depth. You can also place the unit on a shelf directly below the TV, if desired.

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX SoundBase 220 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 35 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Three 2" Drivers: The ZVOX SoundBase 220 uses three 2" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

5-1/4" Subwoofer: In addition to the three main speakers, the SoundBase 220 has a built-in down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound: The SoundBase 220 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet: The SoundBase 220 features a cabinet made of MDF (medium density fiberboard), the same material used in most high-end loudspeakers. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The SoundBase 220 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu-ray player that are not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The SoundBase 220 has independent bass and treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass and treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new SoundBase 220 can be programmed to respond to your current remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume up, volume down, mute, and power on the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The SoundBase 220 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

Connections

One Cable Connection: The SoundBase 220 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX SoundBase 220 offers analog and digital audio inputs:

  • Digital Inputs: The SoundBase 220 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept 2-channel PCM only (not compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals).
  • Analog Inputs: The SoundBase 220 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input. The front panel input is handy for connecting an iPod or other portable audio device.

You can use your TV analog audio output connections which your TV should have. It does have dialog enhancement setting. I don't believe you can connect to wi-fi. You will be pleased with the sound quality if you are trying to improve on small flat screen speakers. Good luck.

You can connect your audio output of your TV to the ZVOX 220 inputs three ways: Optical cable (most desirable, if available); coaxial cable (2nd choice), or RCA cables (right and left), which almost certainly your TV has. There is definitely no WIFI connectivity for this speaker
charles a  Sep 02, 2016
A
Inputs are RCA (2 sources), optical (1) and digital (1). It does have a dialog mode (which is my default). It does NOT support Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Also, the infrared sensor can learn one other remote, i.e., your primary clicker. The ZVOX 220 option changes are cumbersome via the panel but the ZVOX remote is easy to use (and small).

Bob V., The ZVOX Model 220 does not have built-in Bluetooth capabilities. This model was built just prior to their Bluetooth available models. Sorry! Suggest to contact ZVOX direct to see if there are other options that you might try to make a Bluetooth connection.

Not much choice, if you have an optical input that will work. I do like the zvox it makes a small tv sound much better.

Should not be an issue. Make sure the source (e.g tv) is connected through the receiver and then output to the sound bar

Q
Hi. A couple questions: 1: Can this unit's volume be set at a predetermined level and have the tv's output regulate the the volume level? I really don't want to be using yet another remote for tv watching. I have the options for both analog audio out and optical audio out. (Samsung UNC7000FW40) 2. My intention is to use this in an media console where the unit would be a foot or so lower than the actual monitor, and probably a couple feet below one's ears. Is this unit terribly directional? I'm not expecting that's optimal, but I'm looking for an inexpensive, compact improvement over my monitor's speakers. Thanks!

Thank you all for your answers! I absolutely love it. Works just as described. Much fuller sound than my monitor's built-ins, nice and compact, a breeze to setup as far as remote compatibility and cabling (optical digital), and it has performed flawlessly. For my compact space it is ideal. Thanks again. Very pleased.

I LOVE this unit! And YES it is very easily programmable to your cable remote for volume control. It literally took me less than 3 minutes to follow their "quick directions" pamphlet to program. I have TV sitting directly on top of, so cannot answer about direction.

Hi, in response to your query on the ZVOX Z-Base V220, I find it to be a great improvement over the "tinny" speakers in the Samsung UN55D6050-ZA 55-inch HDTV. Setup is trying, but the unit works as advertized. You can color the sound by adjusting the Volume, Bass & Treble. Surround sound options create spatial effects. Volume fills my 14' x 14' open-end family room. My purpose for purchasing this unit was because wifey, who captures the TV 90 percent of the time just listening to that "tinny" TV audio, drives me crazy. I read reviews before purchase. Users indicated good functionally. Instructions IMO are disjointed. Included in the box is a phone number to get HELP. At first, using their process, I was trying to set up remote control by using the DirecTV remote. It just wasn't working. Then I decided to set it up with the TV remote. Walla! Now the TV or the DirecTV remotes work. I have control of the Volume/Mute. Incidentally, if you don't have the ability to switch the TV's speakers to OFF or External, then you will hear the TV's speakers in the background, which causes an echo effect. Hardware wise, the unit does not shut OFF. It goes into Standby, then later to SLEEP, upon TV shut OFF. Upon TV turn ON, Wake the unit up, by adjusting the Volume UP/DWN. Main Power switch ON/OFF, on rear panel. I leave mine in the ON position. The unit does not get hot. It is heavy. My TV is supported by the HT console's metal Backstay. The unit is positioned on a lower shelf, on the left side of the HT console, just about 2-feet below ear level. Remember wifey doesn't care as long as she can hear her "Soap" characters. Yes it is a bit directional. I use an Optical cable for audio hookup. Surprisingly, the unit is functioning just as I had envisioned. It's completely independent of my HT system and at the same time, I can run both at the same time, which really creates some unique audio sound effects. Overall, I think the unit will fit your needs. It completely satisfied mine.

This unit can be paired with your Samsung TV Remote and you will only need your TV remote to control both units, Plus your cable box. It depends how you set it up. This unit, if set up correctly will fill a room with a surround sound effect.

Can't help you with the volume issue. I have my ZVOX on a kitchen counter with the TV on a swivel mount 1 foot above the counter. You would never know the sound was not coming from the TV unless I told you. This is true for all angles.

Monte, 1. I programmed my TV remote (easy instructions) to adjust the volume of the ZVOX. So, yes, you won't need to use the supplied remote for volume adjustment. 2. I have my ZVOX Z-Base V220 on the shelf below my TV. I think this works fine. You mentioned "a couple of feet below" your monitor. That should work OK, but you might want to prop the front feet up a bit for better sound. I does provide a fairly "large" sound for such a small box. Watching three seats from the front of the unit gives OK sound, if you are also wondering about lateral dispersion. I hope this helps.

1) Unknown 2) Unit functions best as TV support/ speaker. Try it as you state and if unsatisfactory bring higher. Don't obscure speakers.

Hello, 1. I doubt that i can be of much help, but: I use my unit with the V220's remote because it allows me more flexibility. I need to use my TV remote to change change over to my DVD, which requires a change on my V220. That works for me. Sorry. 2. My TV sits on the V220 and both are pretty much at ear level. I wonder if the difference in height would affect the surround-sound effect. I am enjoying a very effective performance as I have it set up. It wouldn't hurt to try it your way, that is if you haven't already done so. Good Luck on your quest! A. Mestas

Monte...I bought this unit for my sister in law who has lost some of her hearing. We set the unit up so that she uses the zvox remote for the volume and than uses the cable company remote to change channels. She indicates that the sound is good enough that she can go into the dinning room or the kitchen and still hear the sound ok as long as she has the volume turned up. Don"t know if this helps you or not. My sister in law really likes the improved sound from the zvox.
richard  Dec 02, 2013

1. You can use your TV or cable remote to adjust the volume. Setting up the connection is usuallly easy, but in my case it was not because I have a Panasonic TV and Verizon FIOS cable. But I have to say that the ZVOX service line was top-notch and they walked me through the whole thing. I didn't have to wait at all for them to pick up. 2. I haven't noticed a problem with directionality even though the ZVOX is a foot or two below our ears and the monitor. I haven't played around with the surround sound buttons, so that might help if you notice a problem. One tip: I needed to adjust the treble up and the base down one notch and that improved the dialogue audio tremendously. We were losing some words in the lower register when the amplitude of the voice was also low.

The answer is yes. My television doesn't have an output, so I use an optical digital cable from my bluray to the Zvox. If your player has no optical output you can use the coaxial digital one. The HDMI cable goes directly from the bluray player to the tv. Try this only if a conventional set up don't work for your DVDs. As an additional bonus I also have an inexpensive bluetooth device that plugs into the analog inputs on the zvox making it so I can play music from my iPod and iPhone. I love the v220 and recommend it highly.

It is not a player. It hooks into my TV along with a Blu Ray player. The box works as an external speaker to the TV. I shut off the TV speakers and get great sound off the DVDs and TV. Hope this helps. Bruce
bruce  Nov 28, 2013

Not sure I quite understand the question. I run HDMI cables from my HD Cable box and BluRay player to the TV, and run a digital optical audio cable from the TV to the ZVOX. This setup is connected to a 50" plasma that I have on the wall in the bedroom. No room for a soundbar or separates in my bedroom. ZVOX has excellent sound, but you must sit directly in front of it for the "surround effects" to be evident. I like that it has tone controls, dialog enhancement, and output leveling. No, it does not sound like my Def Tech home theater in the family room but it does sound much better than the TV speakers. Hope this answers the question. Break - Crutchfield, if you have any suggestions for a better setup (BluRay directly to the ZVOX via DO or Coax, TV to whichever one I don't use for the BluRay) I would appreciate it.
