High-res audio

Add a high-res USB connection to your home theater receiver or DAC

Want to play music files from your computer through your home theater receiver? Got a great-sounding DAC (digital-to-analog converter) without a USB input, or one that can't handle today's high-resolution digital downloads? Then check out Peachtree Audio's X1 USB-to-S/PDIF adapter. The X1 isn't a DAC; it's a precision-built component that takes a USB output from your PC and converts it into a pristine optical or coaxial digital signal that you can easily plug into your favorite outboard DAC or home theater receiver. And because it allows your DAC to receive data streams up to192kHz/24-bit resolution from your computer, you can enjoy truly high-end, better-than-CD audio quality.

Asynchronous USB means better sound from your computer

The standard USB connections on most computers pose a serious limitation to sound quality. That's because while you're trying to listen to music, your PC is busy performing virus scans, data backup, and other background tasks that may take priority over your tunes, causing it to alter the data rate to suit its own needs. Unfortunately, this situation results in timing errors within the digital data stream — known as "jitter" — that adversely affects sound quality. Jitter can make your music sound harsh and edgy, and smear subtle details.

The X1 solves this problem by reaching out to your computer through the USB interface, and instructing it to relinquish control of the data stream timing. In its place, the X1 inserts its own separate, or asynchronous, clock to precisely control the timing of the data rate, reducing jitter to the vanishing point. And since not all audio content is encoded at the same sample rate, the X1 uses two discrete onboard clocks to optimize itself for different types of audio files or streams, for even greater timing precision with no sample rate conversion necessary.

Product Highlights:

  • converts USB audio output from a computer to S/PDIF coaxial or optical digital for connection to an outboard DAC or home theater receiver

USB/SPDIF Converter: The Peachtree Audio X1 converts the USB audio output from your Windows/Mac laptop or computer to S/PDIF coaxial or optical digital audio in order to connect to an external DAC or your home theater receiver. Now, you can listen to your favorite digital music files stored on your computer through your existing home entertainment system (all it needs is a coaxial or optical digital input).

Asynchronous USB Operation: Asynchronous USB operation reduces jitter and provides better sound quality for your computer's digital music files.

24-bit/192kHz Resolution: The Peachtree Audio X1 accepts up to 24-bit/192kHz sampled audio files for playback of high-resolution music. Compatible sampling rates include; 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz. There is no up-conversion.

Windows/Mac Compatible: The Peachtree Audio X1 is supported by Windows 2000, XP, and 7; plus Mac OS X. You will need to install a USB Driver for 24-bit/192kHz playback on a Windows PC (USB driver on included CD-ROM). No additional USB drivers necessary for Mac.

Connections: The Peachtree Audio X1 is fitted with a USB (type-B) port which connects to your computer or laptop (Windows/Mac compatible). The other end of the X1 is fitted with a S/PDIF coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital output, used to connect your outboard DAC or home theater receiver. Cables sold separately.

Power Requirements: The Peachtree Audio X1 is powered by your computer's USB (type-B) port. No outboard power supply required.

Great little unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does it's narrowly-focused job very well. Great sound quality out of my Mac Mini via USB, with coax piped to my Audio Note DAC. Very easy to setup on the Mac (no special drivers needed, just select the device in the Audio MIDI Setup menu, or Option-click the volume button). Couple minor issues (see below), but nothing significant.

Pros: Great sound, nice little bit of hardware, handles all the way up to 24/192.

Cons: Price a little steep given what it does, but it doesn't have much competition, so fair enough. Also, I'd prefer that all the IO sockets were on the back, rather than a mix of back and front, as it makes the cable situation a bit awkward. Finally, the LEDs are brighter than I'd like.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a Decco 2 that I have really enjoyed for a couple of years now. During that time I have started to acquire some high resolution recordings (24/88.2 and 24/96) that the Decco 2 was downsampling (24/48). After researching the X1 on the Peachtree site I decided to give it a try but I knew I wanted to buy from Crutchfield.

I'm pleased with the results so far. I was worried that I would notice a difference in the sound but I don't perceive a difference. The sound quality is the same and having the choice between the optical or coaxial output is a bonus since the Decco2 only has one coaxial, one optical and one USB input.

Also, on a side note, I ordered the X1 from the website since I was comfortable with my purchase. About 10 minutes after placing my order I received a call from Crutchfield to clarify that I was getting a converter and not a DAC and if I needed help choosing a DAC they would help me. Nice touch.

Pros: Works great, doesn't change the sound signature and it's small enough to tuck behind my Decco 2.

Cons: Besides two extra cables--a USB and coaxial cable cluttering my cabinet-- there are none really.

Peachtree Audio X-1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the X-1 so I could play high quality audio files from my Windows 7 PC to my favorite D/A convertor. Install is simple. Connect device. Power up computer and install the software disc. Took a while to get it to play. The issue? It is necessary to make this device the default device and make sure your system speakers are not default. This device must be the only device. So once installed your computer speakers won't function without changing the default settings.

Pros: I like the ability to select the SPDIF output. The device can output 16 bit 44.1 KHZ to 24 bit 192 KHZ. With my homebuilt old school D/A convertors the results on 16 bit 44.1 KHZ was very good. Selecting 24 bit 96 KHZ Studio Quality to my CS4398 D/A was a revelation. I like the fact the device has galvanic isolation on the Coax and Toslink outputs. The reclocking of the device ensures high quality playback.

Cons: None found to date.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Peachtree Audio X1 to interface between my laptop and my NAD C375Bee Dac to achieve higher resolution output from my laptop USB. The X1 lets me fully enjoy the highest-resolution digital music available - all the way to 24-bit/192kHz resolution! I am happy with the sound and recommend the Peachtree. I am running JRiver as my digital music server and the Peachtree allows me to output the highest resolution JRiver offers.

Pros: Portability, this device can be used on any laptop to DAC

Cons: My con is with the NAD C375bss Dac, it doesn't have a digital coax in-put.
