Overview

Our take on the Energy RC-Micro 5.1

The RC-Micro 5.1 is Energy's most compact speaker system to date, and it proves that smooth, expansive surround sound can come from tiny speakers. Each of the four matching satellites stands no taller than a soda can, and the subwoofer takes up only about a cubic foot of space.

The RC-Micro 5.1 is Energy's most compact speaker system to date, and it proves that smooth, expansive surround sound can come from tiny speakers. Each of the four matching satellites stands no taller than a soda can, and the subwoofer takes up only about a cubic foot of space.

Smooth sound throughout the room
Energy speakers excel at delivering flat frequency response, for even, accurate sound. The tweeters are placed as close to the woofers as possible, helping to blend high and mid-range frequencies. The overall result is sound that's uniformly dispersed throughout your room.

Impressive bass impact
The 60-watt subwoofer pumps out clean, deep bass, thanks to its 8" front-firing woofer and down-firing port. The sub's proprietary Ribbed Elliptical Surround™ increases efficiency and fights distortion. It all adds up to powerful low frequencies that draw you into your movies and music.

Sleek finish and flexible placement options
You can easily tuck the satellites on shelves or bookcases without sacrificing much space. Or for a more sophisticated look, wall-mount them with the integrated keyhole slots, use optional brackets with the threaded inserts, or position them on stands. All six pieces have a sleek, high-gloss finish reminiscent of a grand piano. These speakers complement just about any décor, and they look right at home next to today's flat-panel TVs.

Just set up the system, everything seems really good, small yet big sound. Have the fronts hanging from the keyhole mounts directly on the wall. Devon AVR E-400 as receiver.

awesome sound!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had these speakers for about three years now and I have zero complaints. They sound amazing and the subwoofer rumbles. When you first get them, make sure you break them in. At first they sound tight, bit after a few weeks their sound really comes though and sounds more full and rich. I compared these to my friend's Bose system I think they sound just as good, maybe even better. When you add in the price factor, these blow Bose out of the water. If you are looking for space saving speakers for a small to medium size room, I would suggest these.

Pros: Tiny, sound and look great.

Cons: N/A

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Small system that really packs a punch. Before purchasing, I had done extensive research on system at this price. This IS the most bang for your buck. Well made, tight sounding bass, treble is crisp. Microphone system to set up speakers is easy and takes about 30min. Speakers haven't even been broken in yet and they're impressive.

Pros: Crisp tight treble and bass Excellent system for the price

Cons: Have to buy a bolt 1/4" x 1 1/2" to get a universal mount to fit properly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far it's a 5. Just what I wanted. They are small, solid, and unobtrusive. They are hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V677 and sound quite good. Not "broken in" yet but they fill a 15' x 25' room with sound quite well. Right now the fronts and center are siting on a mantel and the rears are on speaker stands. Hope they sound as good when I mount them to the wall.

Pros: Size Clean Sound Solid Construction

Cons: None so far.

Bang for the buck!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this purchase, insofar as having obtained this from Crutchfield, and the product itself. 1. Crutchfield - is selling this for far less than on amazon.com. I asked the amazon merchant for a price match, and they said they don't so I proceeded with Crutchfield. The reason why I wanted to buy from amazon is their financing offer. Thankfully, Crutchfield takes paypal credit, so I will be able to spread out my payment over 6 months. The video review of the product is comprehensive and helped me make the decision. The online chat support was also helpful when I asked about the product. 2. The product - I was choosing between this and the Classic, and the main reason why I chose this is the aesthetics of the product. The classic satellites are larger, and look clunky. The satellites are interchangeable, and the risk of mounting rear speakers in front, and vice-versa, is taken out of the equation. I'm happy that the product didn't come with speaker wires. Most products that do have cheap wires anyway. The only downside to the product is the wire connector. You'd have to have splicers to be able to strip the wires properly to connect to the speaker. The alternative is to attach your wires to pin connectors.

Pros: Great sound for a 5.1 system (my speakers are hooked up to an Onkyo TX-NR535), at an attractive price point.

Cons: Connecting the speaker wires is quite a chore.

I paired these speakers for a home theater (16ft x 14ft) with a Yamaha v-477 receiver. The sound from this system is unbelievable. I knew from other reviews the speakers would sound great but they exceeded expectations by far! If you're looking for a small set of surround speakers this set is what you need.

Pros: Small, stylish, large sound, tight bass, great price

Amazing sound from speakers that are small and sleek enough to not be obtrusive in a room. Despite the small size, sound is good, with enough bass to shake the room if you want. Add in free super-fast shipping, and a great price and you can't lose with this speaker set.

Great small room surround sound speakers for the price. Sound is crisp and clean, even at high volume. Good mid range sounds, which can be lacking on many systems.

Cons: Would not work for a big room

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound separation is perfect. The sound level is just right for the room size 14' x 18' Its driven by a Sony digital processor/receiver 250 watts per channel. I added more speakers to the system and adjusted the surround sound for even better separation with no problem.

Pros: Easy set up. The manual has more than enough information to help you make the correct set up and you don't have to be tech savvy to understand the information.

Cons:

Great set of speakers

I have had these sweet little cubes for 2 years now, the sound is very crisp and keeps getting better. They fill my 15 X 20 room with awesome sound. I run them though a Yamaha Rx V671 receiver, they handle everything it throws at them with ease. I recommend the burn in period, as the sound becomes warmer. On a side note, I'm surprised and happy these are the same price I paid for them 2 years ago. Great Purchase!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had energy speakers on my main surround sound system for about 10 years, and was looking to replace an old set of Yamaha's that came with a house we just bought. After reading reviews here at Crutchfield, I bought a set of these and they are great. Wonderful sound. The yami's were very tinny and the Energy's have a nice sound with good high, mids and bass. Would definitely buy these again and recommend them to anyone looking for a small speaker package with a great sound.

Pros: Great sound. Good highs and bass.

Great speakers for small spaces

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this speaker set for several years, and I have only positive things to say. These continue to sound great, and I'm very happy with the price I paid here on Crutchfield. Rather than bother with a burn in period, I just re-ran my receiver's room calibration routine again after a month or so. I have the front trio on shelves and the surrounds mounted on stands. While I will be upgrading my receiver soon, these speakers are staying put. I'm rarely ever this happy with a purchase.

Pros: Size, Look, Sound. An excellent value.

Cons: Minor quibbles honestly. May get scratched easily. The included rubber "feet" are an afterthought.

I installed these into my 16x12 bedroom six months ago and have really enjoyed them so far . The house is a ranch so I was able to hang these on the excellent Pinpoint AM20's from ceiling and wire from above attic. I used in wall audioquest flx-14/2 which just fit the micro's terminals. banana plugged the receiver side. The receiver is the Denon 2312CI networked w airplay etc I bought on sale here last year , Denon blu-ray 1713ud , apple tv1080, on wall 50" Panasonic plasma 1080,. I had an SVS SB12 sub in storage from an older system in my old house so I installed that as well. No wimpy subs here.. I thought to myself when I was installing this system I could always drop more expensive speakers on the existing system if these didn't satisfy, these micros certainly don't break the bank like M&K or Anthony Gallo so no biggy. Anyway nothing has been changed, the system just rocks ! They have surpassed my expectations by a long shot. Occasionally some friends come in and can't believe the sound in this room. They took a few weeks to loosen up and sound more relaxed, easy to look at, great value. Don't overlook them

Pros: value

Cons: spring loaded binding post, hey I guess we cant have cardas for this price but no problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

HOLY C--P!!!! I am impressed. I did a lot of research prior to buying this set up. I wanted small speakers but was extremely unsure how they would sound. I listen to a lot of different music, so I wanted something that could handle everything from '80s hairbands to today's heavy metal to hip hop. Plus give me the theater effect on movies, and I definitely found it. I retired my 80's BIG Yamaha speakers which I liked a lot also, but just wanted something a little more refined. When I say retired I mean they still work fine and now will be moved into my garage. This is my first surround system that has a sub so my review may not be the most accurate, but if you're looking for a lot of bang in a small package this is it and at a very good price.

Pros: Small speakers that don't attract attention. Excellent sound for both music and movies.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Really good sound at an amazing price

DavidW from Pelzer, SC on 11/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even with the very good reviews on the Crutchfield site, I was not convinced that such small speakers could produce the sound I wanted for my 21x27 foot room. Because of the 60 day return policy i decided to give them a try and I am glad I did. These are amazing little speakers that perform very good in my room. The sound is crystal clear. The only thing I am not 100% satisfied with is the sub woofer, but for the price I can deal with a little less base than would be ideal.

Pros: Small but still sound great.

Cons: Base produced by the sub woofer could be a bit stronger..

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Energy RC Micro 5.1 system from a cnet review I read initially on the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system. I almost bought the Take Classic system until I ran across the Micro system and started researching the differences and reading all the reviews I could on it. I ultimately decided on the Micro system and I'm happy I did. I had my heart set on the Bose jewel speakers until I read all the negative reviews on them and Bose in general. I'm only using the right, left and center channel speakers with the sub and so far, everything sounds awesome! I have it hooked up to my new Yamaha RX-V471 receiver and 55" Sony NX720. I was able to find a separate new Energy RC Micro center channel speaker on eBay and will be using it with my other 2 speakers for my upstairs living room. I'm very happy with this system! Thank you Crutchfield for having the lowest price on this system with free shipping (got this tip from a review I read). P.S. I bought 16 gauge speaker wire from Monoprice.

Pros: Speakers are tiny, sub is also not obnoxiously huge, pretty black piano finish, packs quite the punch for such small speakers, and the price from Crutchfield can't be beaten!

Cons: None!

Wow! Great Speakers at a great price.

Vicente from DPO, AE - Rome, Italy on 11/10/2012

I've had these speakers for about a month now, and I love them. I purchased these speakers after reading all the great reviews on them -- the reviews on various shopping and technology sites were all consistently very positive with many of them comparing these speakers and their cheaper Engergy Classics to speakers many hundreds of dollars more expensive. I purchased these to replace a set of Bose bookshelf speakers which sound great but which each weigh about 20 times what these little Engergy speakers weigh. I'm not an audiophile. All I know is that these sound as good as my large Bose speakers and for their size, I'm amazed at how they can fully cover my 15' x 20' living room. The high frequencies sound "crisp" to me; the low frequencies from the subwoofer sound very natural -- not artificially "thundering" like the sound from the 18-year-old subwoofers I had been using. My biggest complaint about these Energy RC-Micro speakers is that it was difficult to mount them on the universal satellite speaker mounts I purchased online. The speakers have threaded (1/4"-20 threads) that are recessed about 1/2" or so on the back, so I had to purchase extra long screws to mount them to my speaker mounts. The connectors on the back of these speakers seem a bit flimsier than the ones on more expensive speakers. Other than that, I've been very happy with my Energy speakers. I'm still very amazed at what comes out of these tiny little speakers.

Pros: Great value -- amazing sound for the price. Small. Great sound from low bass to high freq.

Cons: Recessed mounting threads on back of speakers make it difficult to mount them using universal (generic) speaker mount. Spring-loaded connectors for the speaker wires seem a bit flimsy. Instructions that came with these speakers appear to be not completely accurate.

Love it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read a lot of reviews after I decided to upgrade my stereo system. These speakers were well respected and were small. Being small, they would fit into my house in a manner that my wife would agreed with. I've had them for a month and they're great, performing as expected and as advertised in all the reading I've done. I recommend them!

Pros: Everything promised!

Cons: When mounting to speaker stands, the supplied bolts will thread to the stand after removing the plastic insert for receiving a wall mounting bolt. This wasn't clear in the instructions.

Bought these and have them hooked up in large living room with vaulted ceiling. I have a denon 3312 powering them and the sound is great. I would even say it sounds very much like an actual movie theater. Plenty of accurate sound and I have not had to turn the volume all the way up either. Feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer...

Pros: Sound quality out of a very compact size. Close second is the price.

Cons: Can not attach banana plugs and it is somewhat hard to find wall mounts for these speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing ancient acoustic suspension speakers. I had read the internet reviews of the energy speakers, but couldn't find them anywhere to try them out. I took a gamble jand ordered them. They are wonderful. They are so small they are inconspicuous, sitting on shelves. The subwoofer is tucked away on the floor. And they sound great in my 15'x18' room. The subwoofer was actually defective (i bought this as a scratch and dent), and after a short troubleshooting session, crucified sent out replacement. The whole experience was really positive, and i recommend the speakers and Crutchfield whole heartedly. Fyi, i am using a dated Panasonic sa-he100 receiver and they work well together. So there was no need to replace the receiver because i was getting new speakers. The receiver can live to die a natural death instead of being put out to pasture.

Pros: Sounds great. Out of sight. Hard for me to think of this as budget priced as they were described on the internet but i guess modest price counts.

Cons: Haven't found any.

Pros: Crutchfield's Customer Support, Great Sound when working, easy on the eyes, versatile mounting.

Cons: Sub died, Small connectors for banana plugs.

Nice speakers for my daughter's room

Dave S from Greensboro, NC on 5/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this system into my daughter's room. Mounted the surround speakers with the Sanus WMS5B Black Five Pack Tilt Swivel mounting kit. With a little modifications to the mounts, the system came together quite well. I also used Monster connectors to do it all right. Along with a new 32" flat panel TV and Yamaha AV receiver, she's pretty much good to go along with her Blu-ray player & Netflix. For a twelve year old, she's got it made!

Pros: Great sound, with a low profile package.

Cons: None. Some reviews pointed out the black finish of the speakers revealed fingerprints easily- but that's not really an issue with this layout.

Great price, even better sound.

DanS from Charleston, SC on 5/10/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My girlfriend had a nice Vizio 32" LCD TV that was sitting in a corner gathering dust while she watched DVDs and Netflix on her computer monitor. She also has a small (roughly 15'x15') room that wasn't getting much use. I had a really nice NAD L73 DVD / receiver that I wasn't using, so it seemed to make sense to pool our resources for a modest home theater. All that we needed were speakers, and the Energy RC-Micro 5.1 from Crutchfield seemed perfect for our needs and budget. Set-up was very straightforward, with 16 gauge wire used to connect the speakers while the subwoofer was connected to the NAD's line-level SW output. For attaching the speakers to the drywall, I used #4-6 x 7/8" anchors and #6 x 1-1/4 round head slotted screws. These screws fit the slots in the speakers perfectly, and with a little adjustment of depth allow the speakers to fit snugly against the wall. Once everything was set up, it was time to try the "new" system out. To be honest, when I first opened the box containing the speakers and sub, I was a bit surprised at how small everything was, but I was much more surprised at the quality of the sound! The subwoofer was positioned in a corner of the room, and at first was a bit "boomy", but this was fixed by moving it slightly further into the room. My friend bought a Roku player for streaming Netflix and internet radio. Both movies and music sound excellent and the surround sound is very "involving". We are very happy with the RC-Micro 5.1.

Pros: Compact size, straightforward set-up, excellent sound. Perfect for a small room home theater system. Nice "piano black" finish.

Cons: Not appropriate for large rooms.

But the sound is great from the 2 front, the center and the subwoffer. And they just look cool. The subwoofer is so good at times we can't tell if the sound is coming from the subwoofer or from a plan approaching Dulles airport. Very pleased with the purchase and especially the price. Can't wait to get the other speakers hooked up.

Lots of very nice sound from a very small package. These speakers replaced those that came ith my 'home theater in a box' unit I bought about five years ago. The difference in quality hits you immediately. They are also connected to my Apple TV improving the sound of my iTunes library. As usual, the assistance from my Crutchfield associate was invaluable. A pleasant process...

Energy RC Micros

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, allow me to thank Crutchfield for offering great products and attractive prices. I've found them to be the best and most trusted on-line company for fantastic deals and knowledgeable reviews, along with personalized service. The Energy RC Mircro 5.1 speaker system is a quality made, great sounding, decor pleasing product. Don't be fooled by their small dimensions. They sounded great out of the box, and even better after the 50 hour break-in period. Sound engineers swear speakers need not be broken-in, but Energy and my ears say they do. You be the judge. A quick easy way to accomplish the 50 hour break-in is to set your receiver to "all channel stereo" and tune to your favorite station. The sound is best described as crisp or clean regarding the satellite speakers. I purchased 2 additional surrounds (E-bay) as my Onkyo 609 receiver supports 7.1 output. The sub unit does a very good job and I have the volume set at 2/3 and crossover at 120 hz. Experiment with the settings for your sound environment and listening tastes. Regarding speaker terminals, I had little trouble inserting #12 wire into the the rear spring-loaded posts. The connection seems very secure and the mounting options are too. If you can't tell by now, suffice it to say, " I highly recommend the Energy RC Micro 5.1 speaker system ". At $399.00 order them today, and you'll thank me later.

Pros: quality construction, great sounding, small profile, and fantastic price

Cons: the beautiful piano black finish smudges easily and shows dust.

Excellent speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely great speakers. I bought these in Nov and they have changed how I listen to music. The sound is so crisp and fills the room. I spend hours listening to music now and enjoy it. The surround sound is great too. The compact size is perfect and the cool look is actually cool. I was more than impressed by this product. Even the Sub woofer size is compact enough. Living in NYC, I have limited space. This does the trick and does it well and elegantly and with a professional sound to it. Total recommend it. Oh and Crutchfield rocks. Their support line is perhaps the best I've come across in recent times. (They have your order open as soon as you call!! Now, that's saving time).

Pros: great look, compact, great sound

Cons: none

Very Happy

Dad from Omaha, NE on 1/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We use these with a Marantz SR-19EX Receiver for movies, music and my son's xbox. They fit into the room great due to their size. They are easy to listen to and do not wear your ears down as some speakers can. They are very smooth, pleasant to listen to with a open larger than expected sound and do rather well with movie impact sound effects. You can tell Energy did their homework on these. They are not just another set of speakers thrown into the marketplace. The sub is very surprising for size. Overall I would rate these as a very good good buy. Your ears will be happy.

Pros: Size, attractive high-end looking piano black finish.

Cons: None really.

Great speakers

Jaycee from Austin, TX on 12/24/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Use the speakers for at least the 50 hr break-in period before assessing it's performance. Yes, this is important! Don't hesitate to play around with different low pass settings on the sub-woofer, also experiment with different speaker positions to find the one giving you the most satisfactory sound. Crutchfied Customer Service, as usual, is outstanding!

Pros: Very good sound for it's size. Speakers have ample power even for a medium sized room.

Cons: A minor complaint -- The shiny speaker tops are dust magnets, so you need to clean them regularly. Put some decorative artifacts on the subwoofer to prevent little kids or a cat sitting on it!

Very happy with these speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Home theater speaker system. I need a set of good quality speakers to pair with my Yamaha RX-A800. HD radio quality is incredible with these speakers. I did a little research between its older brother take classic and rc-micro. It turns out that the rc-micro price just dropped as take classic recently, and, according to other reviews, rc-micro set is relative a bit better with sound quality albeit the size is a lot smaller. So, I bought them. Needless to say, my choice was mostly influenced by both professional and user reviews(# of stars). I don't know a lot of home theater system, but I am very happy with these speakers because the sound quality is so superior. I love the HD radio, it is fantastic and the sound is so crisp. Now, it's my first thing to turn it on and listen when I wake up in the morning. This is also my first purchase from crutchfield, extremely fast shipping. I am very happy with it.

Pros: Small size, the glossy look. Sound quality.

Cons: I need two more satellite speakers to make it as 7.1 system....well, that's hard to find.

Energy Micro 5.1 Speakers

JohnD from Charlottesville, VA on 5/5/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the chance to personally try these two home theater set from Energy, the Energy Take Classic (ETC) and the Energy Micro (EM). To tell you the truth, I was a little hesitant to get the EM's speakers, they are about 50% smaller than the ETC, however once broken in, they deliver far better quality sound when compared to the ETC. The EM have a far superior sound output than the ETC, I would say ten times better. The high tones are crystal clear, very sharp, as with the ETC, you can hear fingers sliding through a guitar string or the breathing of a musician when playing a flute. The EM's subwoofer is basically the same as the ETC's, as you can see on the pictures, the only difference is the enclosure, it is about 20% smaller. The control knobs, inputs, and connections are exactly the same as the ETC. The ETC's sub is rated at 200w while the EM's one is rated at 240w, after listening to both subwoofers the EM's sounds sharper without being too boomy, definitively like the EM's sub. One of the drawbacks of these speakers is the attachment, it is a small square block that is secured by a small screw, if you plan to use conventional sat racks, they might not work for you, you might need a screw twice as long than the one that comes with the rack, to be able to go through the recessed hole after you remove the square block. In my opinion, these are the best speakers I have tried so far.

I read in reviews about subwoofer not having enough power--thats not true. Subwoofer has lot of power. I kept subwoofer volume less than 1/3 of total volume it shakes my whole appartment. I had doubt buying these speakes from Cruthfield for this price. But they all came sealed and in brand new condition.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I will be the first to admit that I am not a true audiophile, however I do like good sounding music. I purchased this speaker system based on several product reviews, and it has not disappointed. There are several reasons for my satisfaction: 1) The size/look. They are very small, even the subwoofer is pretty discrete. Also they have a very polished and aesthetic look to them. 2) They also have a very clear rich sound, which is surprising for their size. With the sub-woofer it is certainly a very rich sound. I already had in ceiling surround speakers, so I used two speaker stand alone in my daughters bedroom. In a small room, they sound good without the aid of the sub-woofer. In conclusion, I think they sound great with movies and couldn't ask for more. I haven't challenged them too much with music yet. I don't think they are going to be to the level of having large standing front speakers, but who would expect that for this type of system. I would certainly say the sound for playing music is certainly good.

Well I finally took the big step into the 21st century with a 55" LED 3d TV and AV Receiver along with these speakers. After having the TV for about 2 months and having an old receiver, I wanted the total surround sound experience. I decided on the Onkyo TX-NR708 and the Energy RC Micros because we didn't want an obtrusive number of speakers scattered about our peculiar living room. After setting everything up and adjusting the system we immediately noticed such a huge difference in sound. These little powerhouses are perfect, clear, and powerful - you feel like you are right there as they are filming the scenes from TV shows to the total experience of watching BD Alice in Wonderland or Tron. Even listening to the stereo through these speakers is such a joy from our old system. I am a fan of good equipment and I cannot say anything bad about these speakers, everything is as advertised.VERY HAPPY!!!

After doing lots of research and reading the reviews, I decided to go with this system since it's by far one of the highest rated mini-speaker systems on the market. Being a Canadian product, I thought I could purchase these here in Canada, but unfortunately they're hard to find. I was surprised to find them at Crutchfield, their service was great, the speakers arrived very well packaged and the speakers themselves are very elegant, sleek & modern. I'm using a Pioneer VSX-1020-K receiver and the sound is as fantastic. I'm not an audiophile so I can't really compare, but I did replace a DVD HTIB with this system and it's no contest. Very Happy!

Really clean sound out of some amazingly small speakers. Don't let their size keep you from using them in a large gathering room space. Speakers get the job done for me. I don't like to blast my movies or music, so I don't even know or care to know how loud these things go. All I can say is, connected to my Onkyo RC260 AVR, these speakers are really clear, loud, beautiful looking and amazingly small considering all they do. The subwoofer packs enough punch to make a big difference. Can't recommend these bad boys enough, buy them!

Energy RC-Micro 5.1 ~GREAT for HD Movies and CDs!

Marty from Westport, CT on 3/15/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had these speakers for two weeks now and I still love them! I've been playing various HD movies and a lot of Miles Davis CDs, and everything has sounded great. And that's a surprise, because I hadn't bought them to play music (CDs), but the Energy RC-Micro 5.1 speakers sound a lot better than my old ones (Celestion SL6)! My wife loves them because they are small and that she can finally hear the dialog clearly at lower volumes. My kids love the rumble of starship and machine sounds coming through the subwoofer. My only "regret" is that I didn't buy Speaker Wire (14 guage) and a subwoofer cable when I bought the speakers. Then I would have been able to setup the speakers when I got home from work (instead of waiting until the next day). I also suggest mounting the surrond speakers about 5-6ft high -- I'm using floor stands behind the couch, about 6-7ft apart.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As soon as I opened up the box, I knew that I had made the right decision to buy these speakers. The packaging is outstanding. Each speaker is individually wrapped not once but twice to assure that it arrives in perfect condition. These speakers are manufactured to very high quality standards. I used 14 gage speaker wire and had absolutely no problem connecting to the spring type clips on the back of each speaker. You just need to make sure that you have fully depressed the button and that the hole that accepts the wire is completely opened prior to attempting to insert the wire. I wouldn't try to go over 14 gage wire with these.. I connected the speakers to a new Yamaha RXA-800 Receiver and the sound is just awesome. I can't imagine how anyone would be disappointed with these speakers, particularly for the cost. It took me weeks to finally decide to buy these. Do yourself and don't waste your time thinking about buying them.. Just do it...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these based on the fantastic reviews they get all over the web. I do like them so far, but these glowing reviews I've read seem a little overblown to me. They are replacing a bose lifestyle 18 system that I bought 4 or 5 years ago. I'd say the sound is pretty comparable. They look great and I have them paired up with the onkyo 508 receiver on sanus htb7 stands. Be aware if you're buying these stands that you will need to get a pinpoint screw kit or they won't fit with these particular speakers. My only disappointment so far has been in the lack of bass that they put out. Doesn't have that punch I'd hoped for. I'm still not much beyond the 50 hour break-in period they recommend so I'm hoping that improves over time. Sometimes I think the rear speakers overwhelm the dialogue from the center channel, especially during basketball games on ESPN, but I'm going to do some tinkering with settings and see if it helps. Rented 2012 on blu-ray the other night and really liked how it sounded. For me they seem to sound better when playing blurays and dvd's than when I'm watching sports on my DirecTv hd dvr. If you're wanting to buy these look no further than crutchfield. Haven't seen anyone that can beat their price.

Beautiful, piano black gloss finish and diminutive size make these speakers all but disappear visually. Sonically they are magnificent for a small to medium-sized listening area. Easy to set-up and enjoy. The "break-in" period is real--just be sure to rebalance the system after about 50 hours of listening. You'll be blown away! There is no better system for the money available anywhere else. These really do compare to $1000+ systems. Much better imaging than Bose or other HTIB systems. First I got a great deal on these from Crutchfield, their customer service is A+ and ordering and receiving the product was flawless. The Micro's arrived on time and very well packed from the factory. The instructions were well written and straight forward. The quality of construction is above excellent for their price even if they were purchased at non sale prices. The sub even though 8" is crafted excellent , clear and deep with the adjustable cross and volume makes tweeking a snap. The satellites are small and look aesthetically great for a living room. The center channel is clear and not much bigger than the satellites. Now the sound starts a little bright but after the 50 hour break in, they are great. The highs are clear /smooth and the mids are getting sweeter by the as more time passes. Now I have read many reviews pertaining to this speaker set for the music.....ADJUST your AVR.... If you are holding a window shaking ear deafening Van Halen concert (they do come close) in a 20' x 20' living room....no these are not for you- they are micros. But for action movies and listening to rock music/ classical at VERY LOUD but clear levels these are great (wife always telling me to turn them down). I am so impressed by Energy products that i bought a set of cf30's towers to run the fronts(so i can have that living room Van Halen concert) and took the set of satellites for a second zone in the kitchen. They are worth the money period.........

I was first led to the Energy Take Classics by reviews, which said the Klipsch set I had been considering was not in the same class as the Energy (made by Klipsch). Then I saw the Crutchfield video that covered both the Take Classics and Micro RCs. Since the reviewers expressed the view that the sound was similar (and had identical ratings on both sets) I decided to go smaller. I also figured out that the subwoofer that comes with the micro set seems to be the same as they sell as a separate, while the woofer with the TCs is not in their lineup separately. As I set them up and hooked them to a Denon 791 receiver, I was blown away by the huge sound out of these small boxes. It actually seems comparable to the sound produced by the JBL front towers with Bose 301 rears hooked to the identical model Denon in my other home.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never heard of Energy until I was referred to these speakers by an audiophile friend and I am very happy with my decision. I told him that I wanted to build a system for under $800, so I bought these speakers and a Denon AVR-1611 receiver. The speakers themselves are a nice small size and look very contemporary with the black gloss finish. They are light weight enough that they fit nicely on any type of speaker stand or wall mounting. Before I get to the sound quality, my listening room is roughly 12'x16' with a vaulted 12ft ceiling. I have 14ga speaker wire running to all the speakers and a single RCA to the sub. Coming from a HTIB system (LG brand 1000W), the first big difference is how clear and prominent the center channel Energy speaker sounds. I was nervous about its small size when I unpacked it, but it really delivers on clarity and room-filling sound. The Energy speakers really work together well and deliver when the volume is cranked up as well as when they are set to night time listening. The sub is small but still hits hard during intense movie scenes (phase set to 180, and volume a touch over 1/2 way up). My first impression when listening to the radio is that it's not going to shake the house down like when watching a blu ray, but my living room isn't a dance club anyway. Overall, the system has delivered on sound quality and great price.

We love these speakers. Earlier we had tried using a large soundbar system which sat underneath the TV and was very large and heavy and didn't require a separate receiver. We couldn't tell the difference between that sound and the TV. Our main goal was to hear dialogue better and to get a little bit of sound effect for movies in a small family room area. These speakers ended up doing the job perfectly. We can hear dialogue crystal clear now and on movies, it sounds like we're at the theater.

What a great system. Personally I always felt it was a good idea to buy speakers that are matched , with regards to timbre. With a surround system package, you wont have to worry about that. I've had these for about one year, and have been very impressed. The quality and clarity are great. The construction and the appearance are really good as well. If there is anything wrong with this system, is that it may sound a bit weak for large rooms. I have a small to medium sized room, but the ceilings are pretty high (20ft). And even with that extra space these speakers are still great. With all that said...keep in mind that these speakers are pretty cheap with regards to price....and the company didnt cut any corners at all. You really get more for your dollar in regards to performance and quality compared to other systems. Practically a steal. hopefully they dont raise it...

Why do they call it Reference if it does not sound close to reference? Reference speakers are supposed to bring out more detail than these speakers are capable of. That said, for the money I paid and the size of it these are pretty good speakers. They do have a big soundstage but fail to offer the dramatic home theater experience as promised by Energy. The main reason for this is most of the power comes out through the center channel and since it is such a small speaker it cannot reproduce it. Speech comes out good but all other effects do not. People who are looking for explosive home theater will be dissapointed with this set up but it is small and can be placed just about any where.

I love these speakers! I bought the speakers after reading a review about how great the quality the sound was coming from such tiny satellites. The sound is clear and pure and powerful. Not only that but they look extremely nice in my relatively small living room. Not too bulky or unsightly. Just perfect.

a very impressive system, regardless of size. the bonus is the small, but beautiful speakers. i was "over ruled" and had to replace my "way to big for the room" system, made up of PSB towers, mirage sub and Bose rears. the Energy system is very well balanced, and despite all the rave reviews, still surprised me with quality of sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had my Energy RC-Micro 5.1 speakers for about a month now. I am still in the "break in" period, so I haven't made all of my final adjustments yet. With that said, I have been really pleased with the sound quality of these little speakers. They look great and sound better. I have them connected through a Pioneer receiver, and have tested them using the following sources: TV, DVD, Blu-ray, ipod, and radio. They all sound great. This, combined with the pricing I got from Crutchfield, made this an absolutely great purchase.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very tiny and clean looking speaker system with a very accurate and tight sound. The bass performs its job very well with plenty of power to spare. This would be a five star rating based on sound, but I had an issue with the RCA outlet on the back of the subwoofer. After about a day or two my sub stopped working so I inspected the situation and found that it would only work when I pushed and held the RCA cord firmly in place to the back of the sub. I tried other RCA cords, but still the same situation. Luckily crutchfield has amazing customer service and I had another system shipped out to me within the same day. If you want a very discrete system with an amazing sound then this is the one.

Great Speakers for Price

Bedroom Set from Plantation, Florida on 10/14/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great!! I can't say anything more about them.. They are clear and have a nice kick.. Energy highly recommends "breaking in" the speakers for 50 hours and that makes a HUGE difference... Don't go cheap on the speaker wires and you will be golden... I have these set up in the Master Room... and they work great!! Don't think about it and just get them... Only qualm with the set is on some medias the bass (small 8" sub) isn't as powerful as hoped for.. So get this set and if it isn't powerful enough get another sub... At this price it's STILL a GREAT deal just for the speakers. Hope this helps!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I consider myself to be very frugal and I absolutely hate the feeling of buyer's remorse. I researched these speakers to no end. When I finally decided to get them, I still hesitated but, I eventually pulled the trigger. I don't normally do product reviews but, this set of speakers deserves it. The satelites are crisp, clean, and detailed. You won't shake the pictures off the wall with the sub but, it gives up more unmuddled bottom end than you would expect. If you adjust the crossover properly, the sub blends right in. I'm in a townhouse so, high volume levels are not a concern for me. Good sound and efficient use of space IS a concern. And this system brings it. Everytme I listen to these speakers, I'm amazed with the clarity and spaciousness of the sound. I would recommend these to anyone who enjoys good sound and is not concerned with how loud their system can get.

Great surround sound for smaller spaces

ThomasM from MN on 9/30/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are perfect for my Condo home theater. They are definitely capable of producing sound much larger than their physical appearance suggests, and the black lacquer finish is beautiful. They sound great for movies and fine for casual music listening too. The sub is adequate, though it will not provide earth-shaking low frequency effects (my neighbors are probably thankful for this.) Crutchfield states it is 60 watts RMS but Energy claims 240 watts (unspecified standard, I am guessing they are measuring peak output).

Great speaker system, the sound is amazing fills my room (22' x 16') which was one of my primary concerns. The speakers sound is crisp you can hear every frequency distinctively. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers with an Onkyo AV receiver are easily all we need in a large living room with high ceiling and open to dining/kitchen/main entrance. You do need to allow recommended break-in period. My receiver has an Audessy calibration and that helped with clarity probably due to reflections in the large room structure. Gone is the rewinding of the Tivo because one of us says "what did he say"? The clarity is outstanding and their ability to handle music is surprisingly good. This system replaced a Samsung HTIB that was not nearly good enough for a large room. The Crutchfield experience was excellent, and what a value!

5/5 Stars! That's right! It's perfect! I got high quality sound coming out of this system for a steal of a price. If you are like me with a small budget but value performance, this is your speaker system. The only drawback is you cannot play them as loud as possible because your house will blow up before the speakers go out.

Not bad at all. But don't expect big sound

Mel from Plainfield, IL on 9/4/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these speakers mainly for PS3 games in a loft area. They are perfect for this purpose. I also played a couple of Blu-ray movies (Sherlock Holmes and The Dark Knight) to test them, but the sound was only OK. They can't seem to handle explosions and really low bass very well. You'll notice the distortion right away even at not-so-loud volume levels. So, don't expect miracles from the tiny subwoofer. They also miss the richness and oomph you get from floor speakers... you know, the high-bass/low mid-range spectrum (200-400Hz perhaps)? However, they have fairly crisp highs and are more than loud enough for a small room. They look really nice and sure are compact. One issue I have with the glossy piano black is that the center speaker reflects light from the screen when I place it in front of the monitor at the bottom. So, now I place a small object under the center speaker to slant it upwards so I wouldn't see the reflection, since there's no room to place it flush with the screen.

Great Speaker System

Bernard from Sacramento, CA on 8/23/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great 5.1 speaker system at a really good price. I attached mine to the ceiling using the Pinpoint AM 25 ceiling mounts and the single hole screw. After reading some other reviews I was concerned about speaker wire fitting into the spring loaded connectors or being severed due to the pressure but that was not a problem. I attached some generic gold plated pin connectors to the speaker wire and they fit in just fine. Great connection and don't have to worry about the pressure of the spring connectors cutting through the speaker wire. I like that these speakers did not use the cheap plastic spring loaded connectors that you usually find on other satellite speaker systems. They appear to be gold plated. They look sharp with the piano gloss finish, easy to attach, and most importantly they sound great. The subwoofer hits pretty hard for its size. Plenty of sound for our medium-large sized room. I would definitely recommend this product to somebody else looking to get maximum quality sound for under $500...definitely a better value than overpriced (IMO) Bose systems.

Perfect speakers for small to medium rooms

Anonymous from Austin, TX on 8/17/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did tons of research and decided on this 5.1 speaker system. I wanted quality, visually appealing and small in stature. I could not ask for better speakers. The sound is full and crisp. Unless you have a very large room or want your ears to bleed these are perfect speakers for movies, TV and music. While still giving five stars I must add that generic speaker mounts do not work with these speakers. You will either have to modify the generic wall/ceiling mounts or purchase the more expensive mounts recommended by Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed another surround system for my home and didn't want to spend a lot as I don't use this TV as much as my main system. I have never bought speakers without hearing them in person and always said I'd never do that, but after reading reviews of this system I thought I'd take the risk. Once they were set up properly, I have to say I was really impressed by the sound coming from such a low cost, small footprint system. I do a lot of recording so I think I'm a bit of an audio snob, but these sound really good. I had to make a few adjustments on my receiver (such as turning off the bass to the L/R speakers in the surround setup for a sattelite system) and adjusting the crossover on the subwoofer to allow the sub to handle more of the low end than you would set for a system that uses a sub and full range speakers), but it wasn't hard and it really made a huge difference. If you want a system that is inexpensive, can be installed discreetly but still have a big sound, this is it.

Great product though I wish there were a 7.1 option

Rando from Spokane WA on 8/2/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great, I love them. They're very compact and very attractive (they look really nice). Even though they are small they are plenty loud enough, The only thing that I didn't like is that they don't offer a 7.1 speaker surround option. And buying a second set of two speakers has become quite a task. It's difficult to find speakers that aren't to large (that will make the energy speakers look ridiculous paired with it). The smallest "Book end speakers" that energy sells are at least twice the dimensions the rc-micros are. (They dwarf the speakers). I considered having them as my front right and left channel speakers but I know they would look very odd (and the finish doesn't match).

Increible Speaker System, but....

Anonymous from San Diego on 7/25/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received my speakers and my new Pioneer receiver last week and the sound these two put out together is incredible. I played the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the sound blew me away. I also watched other BDs such as Contact and a couple of Disney animated movies. They too were unbelievable. When I switched to cable TV there was no sound drop-off. I have the system set up in a 18X20 family room with one end open to the kitchen area and the sound still rocks the entire area. I have heard some people say they think the sub-woofer is under-powered but trust me: it isn't! So why did I not give it 5 stars. Well I now want to go to a 7.1 theater setup (seven speakers) and Energy will not sell individual speakers and does not sell this setup in a seven speaker package. They recommended another of their speakers (CB-5) which is sold individually but they are just too tall for the shelf I am using. Bottom line is if you are content with a five speaker system, which is incredible, you cannot go wrong with this system. If you are thinking about doing this, I recommend you do it now while Crutchfield still has them at this price. After listening to the sound these put out, I would have paid double.

Great Value

Anonymous from Meaux, LA on 6/16/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a winning compromise between the wife and I. I wanted full rich surround sound while the wife wanted minimal "wall print". Even having to place these speakers well above ear level (around 9' up) and in a room larger then most reviews seem to recommend (18' by 20'), you still get a feeling of being in the movie. The subwoofer was quite a pleasant surprise as well. At first it sounded like somebody beating lightly on a coconut, but once everything was calibrated properly it ended up being quite capable for movies and passable for music. I have these paired with my LM1s and in movies they are great companions. For music, the Micros' show their limit. While perfectly capable in loudness, these micro sats seem mottled and not nearly as precise as the LM1s. That really was expected, but I'm just making it clear as some people may get caught up in the hype of these speakers. That said, the center channel appeared to be quite a bit more capable in the music department despite it being similar in build and only slightly larger in size. So for those that want a budget home theater solution, I give my full recommendation. For the audiophile looking to go cheap, I can still recommend this set as capable, just not a miracle cost effective alternative to a floor standing solution.

I cannot say enough about these speakers. During the 10 second paramount introduction before Transformers my wife was amazed. "This is better than the movie theatre!" she exclaimed! I truly love these speakers and would recommend them to anyone. Reviews said that these speakers "easily justify the $1000 pricetag" and that's what sold me on them (esp for this price!) along with the other reviews on here. You will not be sorry.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'd read about these speakers some time ago, but had always been a little skeptical about how they would sound, being so small. Subsequently, however, I bought some Energy Take 5 Classic 5.1 speakers which are also small, but sound truly spectacular. Since those Energy speakers sound so good, I had absolutely no qualms about also buying the Energy "RC-Micro" speakers (which have also been highly rated by audiophile sources). These tiny new speakers sound great. They're located in a bedroom & you barely even notice that they are even there until you try to pinpoint where the sound is originating. The gloss finish is even better than the Take 5 Classic units (softly rolled edges are really nice). As a bonus - they're inexpensive too, relatively speaking. PS: I didn't have any problem mounting these speakers using 2 different methods with the hardware provided with Sanus stands.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An excellent buy for the price for separates for a small space (mine12X12.5'). They have handled the output from a NAD737 A/V receiver nicely. A sense that they would be lost in a space much larger than 15X15' but not sure at precisely what dimensions. A slight difficulty to mount these speakers to stands. The easiest solution was to remover the 1/4" screws holding the internal mounting brackets and replace this screw with a same thread sized 1" screw (available at local home products store) and then to use the face of the bracket interface on the stand as the mounting surface. Rather that utilizing a CD for speaker "break in" it might be best to utilize a favorite DVD ot two that provides full range of sound to all speakers (e.g. Dudamel: Inaugural Concert and Monsters Inc). [Why? My A/V receiver plays CDs in stereo (front two channels only).] In regards to the subwoofer remember to connect single RCA cable to LFE/left input (provided one has a LFE/subwoofer out plug). Real value for the money at the price point. The next jump in quality of sound repoduction in the current market is in the $1500-2000 range.

Anonymous from Chicago, IL on 5/27/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't had these speakers long enough to complete the break in period but they are already fantastic! Originally, I was concerned that the black speakers would stand out against my white ceiling (pre-wired condo) but, with white Pinpoint AM20 mounts, they seem to float in my room barely noticeable. The same can not be said about the sound which fills the room. Because the surrounds are identical to the front speakers, I still need to tweak the aiming a bit since my room extends behind the mounting points (pre-wired condo again) which means, sitting directly under them, I'm not getting all of the effects from my primary listening position. Still, they sound great! Can't wait until they break in and I tweak the aiming.

Great speakers for my small home theater

Anonymous from Hawaii on 4/4/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad I bought these Energy speakers, and now they're an even better deal I see. Along with a new receiver, replaced an older Onkyo HTIB (home theater in a box) set which never really produced good surround sound and which I could never figure out how to calibrate correctly. New receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR507 with automatic calibration using the supplied microphone, and the theater sound is now light years ahead of my old equipment, and ridiculously easy to set up. FYI - my room is only about 15' long front to back, and 10' wide with one side open to the kitchen area. Speakers do fine for that non-optimal setup, but this is a good set for small-medium rooms, not larger rooms. And agree with another reviewer - you do not need a split subwoofer cable - you just use the left channel on the back of the subwoofer - is labeled "Line In/Sub In." Be careful, though - this is a powered subwoofer which plugs in, so if your old receiver does not support a powered subwoofer with a single subwoofer cable (NOT standard speaker wire) then this set will not work for you. But in that case, I suggest you do what I did, and buy a nice new receiver with a calibration microphone - it is definitely well worth it. Oh, and my receiver has HDMI cable jacks which my old one did not... Anyway, was just watching The Last Samurai and heard it raining softly behind me. :-)

I researched several different 5.1 speaker systems before settling on this product, I was prepared to buy another brand when I noticed the Energy Micro 5.1's were on special at Crutchfield. I read some reviews on the product from Crutchfield.com and I also visited the Energy website and decided to go for it. When I opened the box, I couldnt believe how small they are!!! I was replacing 20 year old Infinity floor and center speakers that were quite large and bipolar Definitive Technology surround speakers, I also had a sub that shook my walls for a long time. I was nervous that these tiny speakers would not match up to my old equipment but, when I turned on my receiver, I was amazed at the amount of sound emitted by these tiny speakers, and the clarity is crystal clear!!! If I have one complaint, and it is a minor one, the overall sound volume is not as room filling as before however, I will take quality over quantity. I also wall mounted these speakers and they look great, they blend into my decor nicely, they seem to diappear because of their size and it feels like the sound is coming out of the walls. The subwoofer is also small but it handles the low notes well and has lots of available adjustments. Overall, I am very staisfied with this product.

Great speakers ... but remember they're satellites

Brian from San Diego, CA on 1/14/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box, a little disappointing. After break-in, much more pleased. The clarity and sound stage is outstanding. The appearance of the speakers and sub are top-notch. I've only listened to music so far, so I can't comment on the surround sound. For music, extremely detailed imaging and you'll hear things you haven't heard before in songs. The one drawback (which is common among satellites) is the lack of upper bass and bottom midrange. I've adjusted the amp crossover and sub crossover settings and ended up with a choice of more seamless frequency response by increasing the crossover of the sub - however, the bass gets muddy and peaky. So, I've decided to have more clean sounding bass and live without upper bass and lower mids. On some recordings this is not noticeable at all. Others, it's a little bothersome - some male voices sound thin and it sounds like whole bass sections kind of disappear. Now that being said, as long as have your expectations in line with how satellites perform, I think you'll be happy. At this price, they're a good value. Not so sure at the original price.

After about 3 months of looking I purchased the RC-Micro system. It lives up to all the praise it gets! The sound quality is amazing! I have yet to hear the first peep of distortion. The quality of product is amazing. The gloss black does pick up finger prints but not an issue unless you like fondling your speakers. I've got this set up in a mid size living room. It fills the room perfectly. The speakers are literally so small that you can't see any of the speakers. It's completely hidden! I would recommend this system to anyone!

A split cable for the subwoofer is NOT necessary

johndavio from Cambridge MA on 10/29/2009

Without gong into the explanation, a split cable for the subwoofer is not needed. Just insert the single end into the left port. Btw, best to use an RG6 cable TV cable. Also, method two, from the manual, for connecting the sbwoofer, is irrelevant in a 5.1 set-up. I'm still waiting for the speakers to break-in but like them so far. Energy's tech support is excellent, in my experience.

I am very impressed with the quality of sound from these speakers. I have a small den and they are just the ticket. It is hard to believe the sound produced from such small speakers. The price is a great deal also. The only problem I had with the speakers is when it came to mounting them to the ceiling brakets I had also bought from Crutchfield. I had to do some slight modification but other than that, you can't go wrong with these speakers.

Great design and sound

kdimag from Fremont, CA on 9/15/2009

These speakers look and sound great. The only thing I didn't like was that subwoofer requires split L and R subwoofer cable. The manual claims that it needs a standard male-to-male cable, but it is not the case. (Look at pictures of the back of subwoofer). It does not use standard one-plug subwoofer jack. I had to look for this special 2-to-1 split subwoofer cable and I couldn't use a high-end subwoofer cable that Monster makes.

Big Sound Small Package

Howard from Cumberland, RI on 8/6/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I unpacked the speakers, I was amazed at the small size of the satellite speakers. The subwoofer was quite large compared to the satellite speakers. Once I hooked everything up to my Sony DG1200 receiver, I was very impressed by the quality of the sound. The highs were crisp and clear and the lows felt distinct and not dull. The surround sound (5.1 speakers) startled me at times with the realism of being there when I played Coraline and Kung Fu Panda on my blu-ray player. These speakers are a steal for the price. My only complaint is that there is not a slot for the speaker wire on any of the satellite speakers. The speakers do not sit flush against the wall. I had to mount four small silicone feet on each of the satellite speakers to make room for the speaker wire and have each speaker sit parallel to the wall (flush is impossible). The polished black finish on all of the speakers looks beautiful, but fingerprints show up after the least bit of handling. It's a good thing the speakers came with a polishing towel.

Amplifier Requirements: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1 System is designed to operate on a wide range of AV receivers and/or amplifiers with a power rating of 20 to 100 watts continuous per channel. The impedance for all speakers is 8-ohms, allowing almost any amplifier to function well.

Break-In Period: ENERGY recommends that you break in this speaker system for 50 hours before playing the speaker at their full capabilities. This can be easily done by putting your compact disc player on Repeat mode, while playing a CD with a wide dynamic range ant normal listening levels.

Satellite Speakers

4 Matching Satellite Speakers: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features four matching micro-sized satellite speakers. Each satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated spring-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and a rear-mounted key-hole slot for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). The key-hole slot can be removed to reveal a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for wall-mounting the speakers using an optional bracket (sold separately). The satellite speakers can also be placed and secured on optional speaker stands or shelves using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Drivers: The micro-sized satellite speakers feature a 0.5" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 2.5" High-Excursion Aluminum Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded acoustic suspension enclosure. The speakers are rated at 8-ohm. The satellite speakers have a frequency response of 150 to 23,000 Hz.

Center Channel Speaker

Matching Center Channel Speaker: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System's matching center-channel speaker is slightly larger than the four matching micro-sized satellite speakers and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The center-channel satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated spring-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and a rear-mounted key-hole slot for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). The key-hole slot can be removed to reveal a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for wall-mounting the speaker using an optional bracket (sold separately). The center-channel speaker can also be placed and secured on an optional speaker stand or shelf using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Drivers: The center-channel speaker features a 0.5" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 2.5" High-Excursion Aluminum Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded acoustic suspension enclosure. The speaker is rated at 8-ohm. The center-channel speaker has a frequency response of 150-23,000 Hz.

Powered Subwoofer

Powered Subwoofer: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features an 8" powered subwoofer with a 60 watt continuous (240 watts dynamic) amplifier. The powered subwoofer contains a front-firing injection molded 8" cone woofer with a ribbed elliptical surround inside a bass reflex enclosure with a down firing port. The 8" woofer is powered by a built-in 60 watt continuous (240 watt dynamic) amplifier. The powered subwoofer has a frequency response of 36 to 180Hz.

Controls:

  • Volume Level: This knob can be adjusted to control the level of output from the subwoofer. The level chosen should allow the subwoofer to blend its output with the rest of the 5.1-channel speaker system.
  • Low-Pass Filter: This control allows for the adjustment of the low-pass filter. Adjustments can infinitely be made from 40 to 150Hz. This will determine the highest frequency that the subwoofer will reproduce.
  • Phase: This switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer, in relation to the five other speakers in the system from 0 or 180 degrees
  • Power Mode: This switch can be set to either On, Off, Auto. If the switch is in the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. If the switch is in the On position, it will constantly remain on. If the switch is set to the Auto position, when a signal is present the subwoofer will turn on and will automatically turn off several minutes after a signal is no longer present.
  • Status Indicator (Front-Panel): The LED found on the front panel will illuminate in blue when the subwoofer is functioning. If the unit is Auto mode and is not receiving a signal, the light will remain off.

Connections:

  • Line/Sub In: These inputs are an RCA type LFE/stereo/mono input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an A/V receiver with an LFE or Subwoofer preamp output, connect a single RCA cable to the LFE/Left input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an AV receiver without a dedicated subwoofer or LFE preamp output but does features a stereo RCA output, use stereo RCA cable and connect to both the LFE/Left and Right inputs.
  • Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level input are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized.
  • Power Cord Connector: The powered subwoofer features an attached 7' AC power cord terminate by a two-prong AC plug.

Mounting Options

Speaker Placement: Speaker placement can be critical in the performance of any home theater speaker system. Follow these guidelines to get the most out of your ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1 system.

  • Front Satellite Speakers: For best stereo imaging, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from their respective side walls. If the distance from one speaker to the listener is very different from the other, it can affect the soundstage or stereo imaging. Therefore, the ideal position is having the speakers equidistant to you, the listener.
  • Center-Channel Satellite Speaker: The center-channel can be expected to reproduce as much a 60% of a movie's soundtrack, most of which is dialogue. In order to maintain the effect of voices emanating from the actor's mouth, the center speaker should be centrally located between the left and right main channels and placed above or below the television. Be sure that the center speaker's front baffle is flush with the front face of the television or cabinet to maximize dispersion.
  • Surround Satellite Speakers: The surround speakers can be positioned in a variety of locations. The surround placement is usually dictated by the room, where the walls and room boundaries happen to be, and where speaker cable can be easily run. The most common surround speaker locations are the following:
    • Side Walls: For best results in side wall mounting applications, position the speaker adjacent to and slightly behind the primary listening area at a height of approximately 6 feet.
    • Rear Walls: For best results mounting on a rear wall, position the speakers so they flank the main listening area and point towards the front of the room. They should be raised to a height of approximately 6 feet and should ideally have a space of 6 feet between them.
  • Power Subwoofer: The placement of the ENERGY subwoofer is critical to its performance. The three most common locations include:
    • Corner Of Room: Results in a boomy or exaggerated low frequency response.
    • Side Wall: Moderate bass performance with increased fidelity over corner placement.
    • Beside Front Speaker: Creates a better blend with the front speaker, but sacrificing overall volume.

I use a Monster Cable 600SW, high performance. Monster Cable all the way. Crutchfield has others, but Monster has always been upper tier and the standard which others are judged by. [ KEAWE  Aug 03, 2014 ]

You only need the standard cable. I had the same confusion when I received my subwoofer. I don't remember if you connect to the top or bottom input, but it's in the instruction manual. [ VINCENT J  Aug 02, 2014 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Modern sub cables are only one plug, and the customer will only use one plug into the sub. It should be labeled LFE, but if it's not just use the left or right. There is only one speaker, not left and right speakers. You want to choose the correct cable for the customer based on the length needed. Here is a link to all of our Sub-woofer cables. http://www.crutchfield.com/g_20111/Subwoofer-Cables.html?tp=2586 If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: I would recommend going with something a bit larger for an open floor something. A full size bookshelf speaker or floorstanding speaker will be ideal for filling a larger area with sound. They sound amazing. They produce good spectrum from anything I throw at it. From Meatloaf, Van Halen, Pearl Jam, Rolling Stones, Bethoven, Bryan Adams... Everything sounds excellent. Just make sure to pair it with a good amp or receiver. [ CARLOS  Jan 13, 2014 ]
For casual listening of music these speakers are fine. If you are more serious I would consider upgrading for music. I have an Onkyo receiver that I purchased with the Energy speakers knowing I would be adding larger book shelf speakers dor my music. The Onkyo has a second zone that I can run the additional speakers I plan on purchasing. Still researching dor those speakers. [ MICHAEL  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I would say from my experience they sound fair to good with music. Sub woffer is fine but center and side speakers could be richer, especially at low volume. Hut overall a good value for the price. Jim W. [ GUENTER H  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I was a little skeptical at first, given their size related to my room size (about 14 x 30). After installation all questions disappeared. Mostly we use the system for TV, and the quality of sound is right up there with the more expensive speakers, crisp, clear, good bass, and lots of adjustment. If your room size is smaller than mine, I can only imagine the improved quality you will experience. And by the way, this is my first purchasing experience with Crutchfield, but certainly not my last. They are BIG on quality of product and making sure their customers are satisfied with their purchase. [ BILL  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I purchased these speakers, along with the Sony STR-DN1040 AV Receiver, and the speakers sound great. I've listened to music through the speakers, both via FM tuner and AirPlay through the AV receiver and I'm very satisfied with their sound. I've listened to Contemporary Christian Music (similar to pop/rock), as well as country music and it all sounds great. These speakers also look great in our living room. [ SAMUEL  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I was really surprised how well these speaker sound cause of how small they are! Great sound at a good price. [ GREG  Jan 06, 2014 ]
