Our take on the Energy Take Classic 5.1

by Chris Egner
Energy

Why choose a pre-matched speaker system?

Looking for speakers that'll deliver thrilling, edge-of-your-seat surround sound? Choosing a pre-matched speaker system is one way to ensure seamless home theater performance. These systems are made up of speakers that share the same tonal characteristics — that means the sound will stay consistent as it moves from speaker to speaker around your room. Most pre-matched systems come with a subwoofer — a must-have for high-impact bass.

Get more enjoyment from all your TV shows, movies, and music. Energy's Take Classic 5.1 system delivers high-impact home theater sound with four matching satellite speakers, a center channel speaker, and a subwoofer. Steve Guttenberg of CNET calls this system "hands down, one of the best small speaker packages you can buy for less than $1,000."

Smooth sound throughout the room
This system's wide, uniform sound dispersion lets everyone in your room get the same audio experience regardless of where they sit. You'll hear detailed music, clear dialogue, and realistic ambient effects throughout your entire listening space. Each speaker's carefully designed tweeter and woofer team up to deliver smooth, natural sound. The two drivers are mounted together and aligned precisely to keep the sound focused and help produce a deep, wide soundstage.

Impressive bass impact
The 50-watt subwoofer pumps out clean, deep bass, thanks to its 8" down-firing woofer and front-firing port. And the sub's Ribbed Elliptical Surround™ keeps distortion at bay and increases efficiency, for lows you can feel as well as hear.

Sleek finish and flexible placement options
The Take Classic 5.1 sports a handsome, high-gloss black finish that's sure to add an elegant look to your room. And if you want to conserve shelf space, you can use the integrated keyhole slots or threaded inserts to wall-mount the speakers up and out of the way.

Features

Overview: The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features four matching satellite speakers, a center-channel satellite speaker, and a powered subwoofer. It includes a powerful 200-watt (Dynamic) powered subwoofer with a front-firing port, 8-inch driver and Ribbed Elliptical surround for bass that you feel as much as hear. The satellite speaker's 3-inch poly-titanium woofer and .75-inch hyperbolic aluminum-dome tweeter focuses sound for clearer dialogue and music. The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1 System utilizes proprietary technology and high quality components that allow you to enjoy natural and accurate music reproduction. The satellite speakers and subwoofer each feature a high-gloss black finish that look great with contemporary flat panels. Gold plated binding-posts ensure positive connection for high performance.

Flat On-Axis Frequency Response With Wide Bandwidth: The ENERGY 5.1-Channel Speaker System reproduces the entire audio range in a uniform manner. By ensuring that no one frequency dominates any other, the Take Classic 5.1ch System ensures that every note is the way it was intended to be, and the sound as natural as possible.

Wide and Constant Dispersion: The Take Classic 5.1 System provides an even pattern sound at all frequencies in all directions throughout the room.

Low Distortion Resonance: No speaker system is distortion or resonance-free, but the ENERGY 5.1 Speaker System has achieved a significantly lower distortion level with a clearly audible improvement.

4 Matching Satellite Speakers: The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1 Channel Home Theater System features four matching satellite speakers. The satellite speakers feature a 0.75" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 3.0" Poly-Titanium Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded bass-reflex enclosure with a rear firing port. The speakers are rated at 8-ohm. The satellite speakers have a frequency response of 115 to 20,000 Hz. Each satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated binding-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and a rear-mounted key-hole slot for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). There is also a 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the back of the speaker for wall-mounting the satellites using an optional bracket (sold separately). The satellite speakers can also be placed and secured on optional speaker stands or shelves using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Center-Channel Satellite Speaker: The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1-Channel Home Theater System's matching center-channel speaker is larger than the four matching satellite speakers and should be mounted horizontally. The center-channel speaker features a 0.75" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 3.0" Poly-Titanium Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded bass-reflex enclosure with dual front-firing ports. The speaker is rated at 8-ohm. The center-channel speaker has a frequency response of 115-20,000 Hz. The center-channel satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated binding-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and two rear-mounted key-hole slots for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). There is also a 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the back of the speaker for wall-mounting the center-channel using an optional bracket (sold separately). The center-channel speaker can also be placed and secured on an optional speaker stand or shelf using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Powered Subwoofer: The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features an 8" powered subwoofer with a 200 (dynamic) watt amplifier. The powered subwoofer contains a down-firing injection molded 8" cone woofer with a ribbed elliptical surround inside a bass reflex enclosure with a front firing port. The 8" woofer is powered by a built-in 50 watt (continuous) 200 watt  (dynamic) amplifier. The powered subwoofer has a frequency response of 33 to 150Hz. The powered subwoofer offers the following controls and connections on its rear-panel.

  • Volume Level: This knob can be adjusted to control the level of output from the subwoofer. The level chosen should allow the subwoofer to blend its output with the rest of the 5.1-channel speaker system.
  • Low-Pass Filter: This control allows for the adjustment of the low-pass filter. Adjustments can infinitely be made from 40 to 150Hz. This will determine the highest frequency that the subwoofer will reproduce.
  • Phase: This switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer, in relation to the five other speakers in the system from 0 or 180 degrees
  • Power Mode: This switch can be set to either On, Off, Auto. If the switch is in the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. If the switch is in the On position, it will constantly remain on. If the switch is set to the Auto position, when a signal is present the subwoofer will turn on and will automatically turn off several minutes after a signal is no longer present.
  • Line/Sub In: These inputs are an RCA type LFE/stereo/mono input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an A/V receiver with an LFE or Subwoofer preamp output, connect a single RCA cable to the LFE/Left input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an AV receiver without a dedicated subwoofer or LFE preamp output but does features a stereo RCA output, use stereo RCA cable and connect to both the LFE/Left and Right inputs.
  • Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level input are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized.
  • Power Cord Connector: The powered subwoofer features an attached 7' AC power cord terminate by a two-prong AC plug.
  • Status Indicator (Front-Panel): The LED found on the front panel will illuminate in blue when the subwoofer is functioning. If the unit is Auto mode and is not receiving a signal, the light will remain off.

Speaker Placement: Speaker placement can be critical in the performance of any home theater speaker system. Follow these guidelines to get the most out of your ENERGY Take Classic system.

  • Front Satellite Speakers: For best stereo imaging, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from their respective side walls. If the distance from one speaker to the listener is very different from the other, it can affect the soundstage or stereo imaging. Therefore, the ideal position is having the speakers equidistant to you, the listener.
  • Center-Channel Satellite Speaker: The center-channel can be expected to reproduce as much a 60% of a movie's soundtrack, most of which is dialogue. In order to maintain the effect of voices emanating from the actor's mouth, the center speaker should be centrally located between the left and right main channels and placed above or below the television. Be sure that the center speaker's front baffle is flush with the front face of the television or cabinet to maximize dispersion.
  • Surround Satellite Speakers: The surround speakers can be positioned in a variety of locations. The surround placement is usually dictated by the room, where the walls and room boundaries happen to be, and where speaker cable can be easily run. The most common surround speaker locations are the following:
    • Side Walls: For best results in side wall mounting applications, position the speaker adjacent to and slightly behind the primary listening area at a height of approximately 6 feet.
    • Rear Walls: For best results mounting on a rear wall, position the speakers so they flank the main listening area and point towards the front of the room. They should be raised to a height of approximately 6 feet and should ideally have a space of 6 feet between them.
  • Power Subwoofer: The placement of the ENERGY subwoofer is critical to its performance. The three most common locations include:
    • Corner Of Room: Results in a boomy or exaggerated low frequency response.
    • Side Wall: Moderate bass performance with increased fidelity over corner placement.
    • Beside Front Speaker: Creates a better blend with the front speaker, but sacrificing overall volume.

Amplifier Requirements: The ENERGY Take Classic 5.1 System is designed to operate on a wide range of AV receivers and/or amplifiers with a power rating of 20 to 100 watts continuous per channel. The impedance for all speakers is 8-ohms, allowing almost any amplifier to function well.

Break-In Period: ENERGY recommends that you break in this speaker system for 50 hours before playing the speaker at their full capabilities. This can be easily done by putting your compact disc player on Repeat mode, while playing a CD with a wide dynamic range at normal listening levels.

Cabinet Care: Great care and craftsmanship has gone into the constructions and finish of the speakers' cabinets. Periodically use the supplied soft, dry cloth to remove dust or fingerprints. Do not use paper towels or other abrasive material as it may damage the high-gloss finish.

I don't know much about expensive sounds system, ohms, decibels and or kilohertz, however...I do know is what I like. This speaker system not only has an excellent price but the sound it is producing with a decent receiver (Yamaha tsr 6750 is what I got) is priceless, for the aficionado who still wants to listen to music and movies but has a budget. This is the set for you.

Energy Take Classic 5.1

Written By Anonymous, georgia on Thursday, September 19, 2013

Had these for about 3 weeks. Love the sound and look. They say the speakers take about 50hrs to break in. If the sound keeps getting better. WOW. These speakers are very attractive and again they sound very good. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a great set of surround speakers. The price is just icing on the cake. They are more than worth 399. Crutchfield is great also. 2 day shipping and great customer service. Thanks

Excellent

Written By Josh, Anchorage, AK on Saturday, August 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a home stereo expert. I run an Onkyo 7.1 but started with this set up and ran as 5.1 for a while. I recently got some front bookshelf speakers and moved the fronts from this to mid room so I now run 7.1. The bookshelf are also energy speakers. All I can tell you is that energy puts out some great stuff. I was pleased with the system before I upgraded to 7.1. For the money, I couldn't recommend any other product. Very impressed. You wouldn't be making a mistake buying this. Not at all. I never write reviews, but this system is worth the review.
Pros:
Clarity. Balance. Cost. All around great set up.
Cons:
Bass is great, but won't overpower you, which in my house we like. (although, during Star Trek Into Darkness last night it knocked some candle holders off the wall in the adjoining bathroom :)). The center channel is next to get upgraded. It is plenty good. Well better than good. But with the bigger bookshelf speakers next to it, could use a little more balance I think.

Great product plus Great customer service

Written By bsloan5398, Fayetteville, AR on Monday, July 15, 2013

I'm no audiophile, but i do appreciate good sound in regards to home audio. In March of 2012 we finished out a bonus/family room in our home and wanted to include a home theater set up primarily for movie watching. I had never heard of Energy or the Take Classic speakers, but the CNET review was outstanding, the online user reviews I found were really positive, the size was perfect as to be unobtrusive, they were part of the Klipsch group (good reputation) and the price was certainly right for our budget. I ordered the Take Classic 5.1 along with a Pioneer 1022K AV Receiver. The sound is really great and for their size, i can't imagine anything better. Initially we did notice an intermittent buzz/distortion from one of the satellite speakers. The buzz returned intermittently about 8 mos later, and then a little after 14 mos of ownership, it became permanent. I was beyond the 12 month manufacturer warranty, but contacted Energy's Customer support via email. They responded within 24 hours, suggested it may be a bad woofer, and offered to send at no cost a replacement woofer. Within 2 days, the replacement part arrived. Less than 15 mins, swap was made. It fixed the issue and they sound great. It's been a little over a week now and I'm not only happy with the product we got, within our budget, but with the support that Energy provided. Great product paired with customer service that earned a great deal of trust from me. Enough that I wanted to share. Thanks

B
Pros:
Small, Affordable, Great customer support, Excellent Sound quality

Honestly can't think of any

Good, not great

Written By Dave E., Ronald, WA on Friday, February 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very nice speakers, good build quality and appearance, but they are still small speakers for a small room. I gave them the 50 hour break-in and believe they did improve over that time, especially the subwoofer which I needed to progressively turn down. I hoped to replace the large floor towers in my living room, but after listening to the Energy Take Classic 5.1 for 6 weeks, I switched back to my larger Infinity surround system. Why? I don't think you can replace the elements of sound you get from larger speakers. Why is a drummer's floor tom 16" and the kick drum 22"? Why are the speakers in an electric bass player's speaker cab 12" or even 16"? I don't think you can reproduce the depth of sound from those sources in a 3" speaker and 8" subwoofer, period. BTW, the manufacturer suggests doing the 50 hour break-in by playing a music CD endlessly, however doing that will usually only excercise the two front surrounds and the subwoofer. You need to play a 5.1 DVD endlessly, or just plan on some quality time in front of the TV. Now, these Energy speakers are going in my exercise room, not the living room.
Pros:
Very nice for a small room such as bedroom, office, college dorm
Cons:
Doesn't quite match larger speakers for depth of sound

Great Product!

Written By Big guy in Dallas, Richardson, TX on Sunday, December 30, 2012

Received these from my son and daughter in law as a Christmas gift (they bought it from Crutchfield). I was looking to replace my 14 year old Paradigm Phantoms, Atoms and 10 inch sub. I have them hooked up to a Marantz 1403 I got from Crutchfield. These little fellows sound as good if not better than the Paradigms. I am especially impressed with the sub woofer. I had a minor issue during my Audyssey set up that the Energy tech support were very good in helping me correct. The one thing I look for in a review is how the user feels the system sounds. I can tell you the sound is full with excellent reproduction and clarity. The bass is so deep, I had to reduce the sub output somewhat to accommodate my 12X16 living room. Mid range reproduction is solid. Highs are very crisp. I cannot say one negative thing about the Take Classic 5.1 system. This system is a great bang for the buck. You won't go wrong buying this system. Solidly built. The quality is evident the minute you take them out of the box. They sound as good if not better with music as they do with movies. Great product!
Pros:
Excellent sound reproduction. Quality build.
Cons:
None

Having owned Energy speakers in the past, I was intrigued to see that they made a surround system. After reading the reviews, I decided to go ahead and order them and I'm glad that I did. They sound great and they look great, too. The price was reasonable and Crutchfield has great service, so it was a no-brainer. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Absolutely Amazing!

Written By Jeetesh K, Bloomfield Hills, MI on Tuesday, November 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was confused for the longest time to decide between Energy Take Classic 5.1 and the Mirage Nanosat 5.1. I talked to one of the Crutchfield advisors and they mentioned if you have multiple listening spots the Mirage would be better, would fill the room with sound. If you have 1 listening spot, then Energy would do the job right. I ended up buying the Energy Take Classic 5.1. I paired these with the Sony STR-DH720 receiver, and connected to my Samsung UN55ES7500 TV. I ran the speakers for about 2 weeks and let them break in. Now the speakers sound mind blowing. I can't believe how much power and crisp quality these speakers can produce. I would highly recommend it. Recently watched Dark Knight in my room, and seriously realized that I won't be wasting money to go to the theater :-)
Pros:
Great sound and price, small size speakers
Cons:
None so far

I originally ordered the Mirage Nanosat 5.1 system and exchanged it for this system. What a difference! I only recently installed everything, but this system is on par with my $2,000 system I have in my basement. I wish this system was out when I purchased that system it would have saved me a lot of money. For the money I doubt there is a better system on the market.
Pros:
Small size, Excellent sound, low price
Cons:
I am not as high of the finish as most reviewers are. To me they look kind of basic.

Lotta speaker for the size.

Written By Tony T., Bend, OR on Saturday, August 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I brought these speakers for a small 11'X11' home office because they would fit on the shelves. I have a old ES Sony receiver and I was pleasantly pleased with the accuracy and separation of 5.1 while watching movies. I was also surprised how loud they could get. (I waited until after the break in period before I cranked them.) The subwoofer reproduces electric bass guitar cleanly and satellite speakers handle electric guitars and female vocal well. The speakers are brighter than my old JBL towers and provided a full spectrum at lower volume levels. These speakers are perfect for a home office.
Pros:
The satellite speakers are small and fit almost anywhere. The subwoofer works well in small rooms.
Cons:
If you're used to large speakers with larger diameter midranges and woofers with a heavy midrange profile, then these will take some time to get used to.

Awesome sound. I had a middle of the road sound system for my 65" plasma. Fantastic sound the Energy Classic 5.1. Love the Bass in the sub.As much bass as you could ever want. For the price under $450.00 don't wait just purchase. You won't be sorry. Please be aware of the break in period. These babies crank! On the back speakers I had advents and the ball connector fit the Energy Classics so I didn't have to use the hardware I ordered to hang them on the wall. I returned the hardware.

Crisp Sound

Written By RayH, Houston, TX on Tuesday, May 08, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently relocated and downsized resulting in a much smaller ( 18 ft x 18 ft) media room for my home theater. My existing 6 year old KM speakers were fantastic, but, way too much bass and for the smaller room even after filtering the subwoofer. I purchased the Energy Take 5.1 Classic to provide full range sound with much clearer high end characteristics than the larger speaker set could provide in the small area. I was not disappointed. The surround sound is very chrisp on voice seperation for movies and crystal clear on high end frequencies. The subwoofer can still overwhelm the room with low frequeny "rumble" on action films, but, it can easily be tuned to the room with either my tuner tone control or the volume knob on the Subwoofer. This is a great buy!
Pros:
Easy set up. Speakers were compatible with my existing speaker wall mounts and stands. Great sound for small to medium spaces. Surprisingly clear sound over full range at all volumes for such a relatively small speaker set. Nice piano black gloss finsh in speaker enclosures.
Cons:
The red and black wire terminals were reversed left to right on the center channel speaker. I had to experiment with the hookup to ensure that the speaker was not connected out of phase. It turned out that the color code was correct, but, it was unexpected to find the terminals reversed from the other four speakers without explantion in the instructions.

Excellent purchase....package came faultless and the speakers dimension and looks is excellent. Sound is great. I was considering a higher investment but combined this speakers with the Denon AVR 1912 and Crutchfield free shipping and the result is a Christmas gift in April. Sound is clear, dialogues are more clear and natural than with my Sony sound system. Thanks Crutchfield...keep the passe.
Pros:
Price, Looks, Dimensions, Overall Sound, Shipping cost
Cons:
I need 2 more for the 7.1

Energy Take Classic

Written By Doneuron, Alexandria, VA on Saturday, March 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Simply amazing! I bought these little puppies based on the reviews and I'm so glad I did. I matched them with my Yamaha receiver (also bought earlier from Crutchfield) and some AudioQuest G2 16 gauge speaker wire (5 stars on this wire too) and the sound is well (I hate to say it), as good as my Infinity towers I have on another system. What really impresses me is the clarity, the natural sound of voices delivered by the center speaker. Niiice! I love the shiny black finish, but they do attract a little dust. I tried Pledge, but that just smudged the finish, so I am now just using a little Swiifer on them once every couple of weeks which works great.
Pros:
Center speaker reproduction, price
Cons:
Shiny black finish

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Bose Lifestyle 38 system which retailed for around $3k. I lost in a split and wanted to buy a new system but on a budget. I bought this classic system and the Yamaha receiver RX-V371, 16 gauge monster speaker cable with banana plugs, monster subwoofer cable and all for around $700 wow. I agree the system needs break-in to break stiffness and manual says 50 hours but I noticed in about 5 hours this system came alive. The bass hits well and mids are crisp and clear. Sounds about or as good as my Bose system for $3k. My room is about 20X18. I also took advice on setting up speakers on Crutchfield website on spacing.I added a new sony bluyray and sound and picture looks incredible. Great service and quick free delivery. My new favorite toy store.
Pros:
Great sound, price, finish look on speakers
Cons:
cannot expand to 7.1 with exact speakers because energy does not sell them.

Awesome Sound Quality

Written By Salty Dawg, Oriental, NC on Monday, January 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality of this system is just beautiful. Clear, natural highs, smooth midrange and strong, accurate bass. They sounded good immediately out of the box, but a little stiff. Once broken in (50 hours), the voice became much more natural and smooth... No more stiff sound, just rich, natural, highly detailed performance with power to shake the room. I absolutely love these speakers. And only this much!! Wow!
Pros:
Great sound quality, quality product, nice appearance, value. A great choice for music.

Great Speakers, but questionable sub design

Written By Adam, Coplay, PA on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first set of take classics I received had a leak in the sub between the enclosure and the plastic insert in the port. I personally do not like the forward firing sub design, especially with a plastic insert that is not removable. As the owner's manual says, these speakers do take time to break in. Don't expect them to sound amazing right out of the box, because you will be disappointed. Size and look of the speakers is great. Range and volume of subwoofer is pretty impressive, although not surprised being they are Energy. That said, don't expect to have dubstep/drum and bass raves with this sub. It just cannot quite hit the lowest notes in those genres or sustain constant low basslines. As a movie 5.1 system and for most other music genre's, these are great! I have them powered with around 80 watts per channel from a Yamaha receiver and I'm satisfied (although, I MAY swap out the sub eventually). Oh and after receiving an RMA from Crutchfield it only took a couple days to receive the new set, of which I just swapped out the sub and sent it back free of charge. Great service from Crutchfield.
Pros:
Clear sound. Volume handling. Size. Appearance.
Cons:
Subwoofer design.

Great speakers! Bose who?

Written By TimM, Starkville, MS on Wednesday, January 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me tell you, these speakers sound freaking amazing. They blow Bose speakers out of the water. The clarity and quality of the sound is amazing. I have em being juiced by an Onkyo tx-sr309 receiver. For movies and tv they are awesome, but music is where they really stand out. Bass heavy rap and similar sound good, but jazz and acoustic stuff sounds like they're in the room with you.

The only downsides for me (why I rated them a 4 star) is the subwoofer and the finish. It seemed to lack the note that I enjoy. I got a 10 inch Klipsch Reference series (Discontinued Model) and man now the system sounds unbelievable. I plan on keeping the Energy sub and putting in the back of the room behind the listening position for a 5.2 setup which should be mind blowing. Now the finish, its neat looking and all, but dang does it attract dust. Prepare for a quick wipe down almost every week to keep em looking clean.

I would def suggest these speakers if you want an out of the box no worry speaker system. If you want a more custom set up buy the pieces individually, but def look at Energy. They rock!
Pros:
Quality, Sound, Size
Cons:
Subwoofer, Finish

Amazing Set

Written By Danny, Bergen, NJ on Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers really offer a punch. They are priced for what you would normally spend for just speakers. I like to really play my music loud and these have no problem keeping up at all. They are super clear even at high volume. They work for everything I have used them for music, movies, games, and anything in between. I would definitely recommend these.
Pros:
Their size, piano black finish, and their output.
Cons:
No negatives I can think of.

Outstanding!

Written By David, Tyler, Texas on Tuesday, December 13, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these based solely on the reviews that I had read here on Cruthfield and online. Honestly, I was somewhat skeptical because of the price, you know the saying, you get what you pay for, and there is no such thing as a full set of surrounds for this price worth a flip. Well, that is NOT the case, I've spent 4 times the money on speakers that haven't performed anywhere near these. And don't worry about the large room, these are installed in a room that is 24'x36' and the sound is amazing!
Pros:
Price.
Cons:
Energy doesn't sell the satellite speakers individually so you can't expand the system and buy side surrounds that match the fronts and rears exactly. I know it is a small issue, but still a hang up to me.

Good budget speakers!

Written By CL, Long Island, NY on Monday, November 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can see why CNET and a few AV forums recommended this set of speakers for a budget system. I've only had them and the receiver (a Yamaha RX-V867) for about two weeks, so I'm still in the breaking-in process, but I'm impressed with the quality of the sound so far!
Pros:
The relatively low price, the careful packaging (lots of styrofoam surrounding all the speakers and sub), and the performance (based on price).
Cons:
The mounting hole (for a 1/4-20 bolt) is really close to where the 5-way posts are ... going to have to use a longer bolt.

Extremely solid speakers for the price. Sound great - very balanced and no muddiness that I've discovered even at louder volumes than I would normally listen to. I almost spent more than twice the price of these to get bigger speakers but I'm gad I didn't. It honestly would have been overkill for my room. Unless you have a very large open space I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with the value of this system and the ease at which they'll blend into your room given their diminutive size. Would buy them again.

Bang for your buck!!!

Written By richie1378, AL on Monday, August 29, 2011

I first saw the review on CNET.com's website and their editors were totally fascinated with this speaker system. I happen to be in the market for a new system and thought I'd give these a try. I fell in love! From the lowest frequencies and to the highest, these speakers are flawless. They literally gave me chills as I listened to music with my eyes closed, the music was very bright and had never sounded that good on my old system. Total recommendation here!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Apparently, Im a closet Audiophile afterall! After a half dozen HTIB systems and the most recent Bose Cinemate GS II, I was loosing hope in good surround sound. Glad I bought these! At first, they seemed on the underpowered side (even with my new Denon 1712@90Watts per channel). But, the 'Break in" proceedure is legit! Now, they come ALIVE during movies! I cant believe how good they sound during video games! Only complaint would be a sometimes bogging sub, but that very well may be in my setup, as I have yet to fine tune the system.Fact is, the speakers themselves produce such good bass, some might not even NEED the sub! Regardless, buy these! Save your time searching. Save your money on other, more pricey setups. Pair them with a good reciever and enjoy. Very happy with these speakers and their quality!

Ex-Bose Junkie!

Written By Jim, Plainfield, IN on Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy, with my purchase! All of the articles I read rated these speakers the best under $1,000.00. These speakers saved me around $2,000.00 by not buying the Bose speakers! I "broke them in" as instructed and have unleashed a dynamic sound range! When listening to some old 60's Rolling Stones songs, it was amazes to hear the backgroung singer's voices crisp, clear, and not being blended in with Mick's voice!
I purchased a Onkyo 706B and needed some temporary speakers to hook up to it until I could afford the Bose. The temporary tag has been removed from my Energy Take 5 Classic speakers. Along with my Onkyo 706B, Ive also hooked up Directv, PS3, and a 46" 1080p HD TV. These speakers give my home theatre experience more pleasure than I ever thought I could achieve in my home!

Great sound, little $$

Written By Jim, SF Bay Area on Saturday, May 02, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are really amazing little speakers. I'm in the process of moving from an older Sony HTIB to a more respectable setup but my budget is limited. I did ton of research and this was the only decent priced 5.1 system I could find. I listened to many brands including much higher priced systems from Klipsch, and others. This sounds the best and never seems like they are straining. I don't have my new AVR yet so these are just hooked up to the old HTIB and they have already made a huge impact. Even my wife noticed. I would say these should be your speakers if your speaker budget is anywhere less than $1000. The fact that you can buy these for this price is a HUGE bonus and will allow me to spend more on the AVR.

Fantastic speakers, fantastic price

Written By byrd, Glouceter, VA on Friday, April 17, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to replace the speakers on an older Pioneer HTIB 5.1 system that I have. I was quite amazed when I first put in a DVD and turned up the sound. The system, a Pioneer XV-HTD520, is a pretty low end unit, and I never would have expected that it could sound so good. It certainly NEVER sounded THIS good with the old speakers.

I was worried after reading a few reviews if these relatively small speakers would do the job in my 22'Lx18'Wx8'H living room. Well there's no question, they do a fantastic job! And the sub is certainly more then I expected (I'm using the LFE input). It's tight, clear, and really packs a punch, and I've got it turned WAY down. Turning up can really shake the house. I'm quite pleased that I didn't spend the extra money for a larger sub.

The Pioneer receiver should be replaced in a month or two with an Onkyo TX-SR706. I've just purchased a new entertainment center, a 52" Samsung HDTV, a Sony Playstation 3, and these speakers. So, I need to let the dust settle a bit before I purchase the new receiver. However, with how good these speakers sound on the old receiver, I am extremely excited to hear what they'll sound like once I get the Onkyo.

These were WELL worth the money, and even more so since I got them from the Crutchfield Scratch and Dent store. There wasn't a single scratch, dent, or other issue to be found on them.

Smooth, clear sound

Written By David, Columbus, OH on Thursday, April 02, 2009

I have these speakers powered by a Yamaha RX-V465 receiver. The setup is in a 17 x 14 room and it fills the room with amazing sound quality. Don't under estimate the 8 inch subwoofer. Despite it's small size, the subwoofer hits hard and shakes the room. Tweak it perfectly with your receiver and the sub delivers deep bass that doesn't "bottom out" and rattle. The speakers bring out many sounds and nuances in my Blu-ray movies and music cd's that I've never noticed before. At this price point, you will not find a better set of speakers. I tested these speakers against a few Polk packages, and without a doubt the Energy Take Classic package offered the best sound. If you are looking for the best value and sound, don't hesitate to purchase this speaker package.

Best 5.1 speaker system!!

Written By Elisa, Juan S. Santa Clara, CA on Friday, March 27, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a 5.1 surround system when I came across this website with best rated under 1000.00 5.1 surround systems and The Classic 5.1 reviews' were good, plus I liked the high-gloss black finish "I thought it matches my 50" Samsung plasma TV. So I waited one long week, and when I got them and I Installed them up easy (for a first time). Hooked them up to a Sony STR-DG820 and then when I tried them up I said "These baby's have great sound" Really I was impressed. especially after I made some adjustments on my receiver. I watched David Foster, Hit man DVD "The sound was amazing" In addition, I watched Transformers in Blue- ray wow", very amazed! I did not know these small Energy speakers could give Great Sound. I really advise those wanting to spend not a lot of money to try The Energy Classic 5.1 speakers. You will not be disappointed

Best sound for the money

Written By Jack, Williamsburg VA on Wednesday, March 04, 2009

I first read about these speakers when a website made them editors choice. I decided to get them & try them out. I have a Onkyo with JBL speakers. I love movies & TV. I have a Toshiba HD player & a Pansonic Blue-ray player matched up with w 61" LED DLP TV. Setup was easy. Put up the new speaker stands, plug in the wires & turn on the system. Watching a Blue-ray was great! Eveything sounds clean. I did not know what I was missing. I am going back through my DVD's & hearing them all over again. They are that good! When you hear the music in the movie, it fills the room very nice but doesn't drown out the voices. Everything is perfect. Run out and get these baby's. You won't be sorry.
