Big sound from a slim powered tower

Tired of sub-par speakers that just fire sound at you, rather than all around you? Then check out Definitive's high-performance BP-8040ST Bipolar SuperTower™. It uses a unique driver design with both front- and rear-firing speaker arrays to surround you with rich, lifelike sound. This tower also adds a built-in powered subwoofer to the bottom of the cabinet for intense bass. Even in large rooms, every listener will experience a huge, three-dimensional soundstage with both music and movies. Plus, this speaker has attractive high-gloss black top and bottom caps with a cloth grille-wrapped enclosure for a sleek look.

Bipolar speaker technology immerses you in detailed sound

sound waves

Front and rear speaker arrays work together to create enveloping sound.

Here's how it works: direct sound from the front midrange drivers and tweeter arrives at your ears first, to provide clear, focused imaging. That's followed by sound from the rear mid and tweeter, which is slightly delayed, to enhance spaciousness. The combination creates a lush, seamless soundstage that's more like the way we hear sounds in real life. And thanks to Definitive's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) drivers, your music and surround effects will sound incredibly clear, allowing you to pinpoint the soloist in a band or the direction of a jaguar's call in the jungle.

Powerful bass built right into the cabinet

At the base of the speaker is an 8" side-firing subwoofer coupled to two bass radiators. This trio creates a total surface area that nearly matches that of a traditional 15" woofer, but has better bass control, speed, and detail than a single huge woofer could achieve. A built-in 300-watt amplifier powers the subwoofer, delivering hard-hitting bass that eliminates the need for an external sub. And because a subwoofer is built into the cabinet, bass output is already perfectly blended with the mids and the highs. All you have to do is set the bass volume to match your room and taste, then sit back and enjoy your music and movie soundtracks.

Build a complete Definitive Bipolar home theater system using perfectly matched centers (see the CS-8040HD, CS-8060HD, and CS-8080HD) and bipolar surrounds (see the SR-8040BP and SR-8080BP).

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Great Speakers

Written By Anonymous, Virginia on Friday, November 20, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers. These speakers really compliments Def Tech promonitor 600 satellite speakers along with the Def Tech ProSub 800. I got these at a really good price. I would recommend these speakers over all others: especially for the price.

Pros: Everything and they are elegant looking..

Cons: None.

Very Smooth

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I saw the sale price on these, I grabbed a pair to replace some 30-year-old B&W's and an equally aged Velodyne sub. Couldn't be happier with the sound - the mid-range and highs are clean and accurate, with no trace of harshness. The bass is fine for music listening. If you're trying to recreate the experience of sitting in front of an M109A7 when it fires its 155mm Howitzer, you're probably out of luck - for that kind of nonsense, there's no substitute for something like a dedicated 18" subwoofer. Or two. In short, these speakers won't knock pictures off the wall, but for the sound of a double-bass or a pipe organ, they're fine. And having two subs helps avoid the "standing wave" problem one often encounters with a single sub.

I've got some old ADS speakers for surrounds, but in my large listening room (13' x 25', with a cathedral ceiling), these produce enough space-filling sound, I could almost get away without the surrounds at all. And yet a well-recorded solo vocalist is solidly anchored front-and-center, even without a center speaker.

Pros: Very smooth, room-filling sound, good imaging, plenty of bass for music listening.

Cons: The stablizer feet should be factory-installed. SInking the screws that hold them on takes quite a bit of muscle.

Good sound BUT...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me preface this review by clearly stating these speakers sound very well. The mid and high output is very clear and warm sounding. However, the bass, in my opinion, is lacking when considering the price of these speakers. I wouldn't consider myself a very critical audiophile, but an avid one. I've heard my fair share of sound systems, both in home audio and car audio. I know good sounding speakers when I hear them, and these hit everything on the head, except the bass.

It's my belief that you simply cannot replace a dedicated subwoofer with built in "woofers", such as these models. Yes, the specs state they go into the 20 hz range, but my ears (and feelings of the bass because you can't really "hear" 30hz and below) didn't reflect that. The mid bass was good. The deep bass that you get when an explosion or bass drum hits fell off, what seemed to be, around 50hz. You can read plenty reviews online in what many believe DT overstates their specs of frequency response. After personally hearing these speakers, I'm one of those believers now. The bass had serious hollow points.

I did try messing with speakers location and volume on back of the speaker, and nothing seemed to help too much. And for those wondering, my receiver auto tune was defeated and my LFE was not connected to them, as DT suggests. The room they were in was an open living room measuring approximately 25 x 15 with one of the long sides open to the kitchen. You may very well have better results

Pros: Mids and highs. Sleek design.

Cons: Bass lacking. Seems hollow. Top, plastic cover design seems subpar for a speaker this price...seems to just rest on top of the speaker, doesn't really attach like I think it should.

Excellent Sound!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would have given these a 5 star rating except one of the speakers I got was a scratch and dent. When I got them and hooked them up the discounted speaker was obviously not working correctly. Crutchfield made it right and sent me another one, I just had to wait a week to get it in. Otherwise these speakers are amazing! Super clear bass with no distortion even at high volume, excellent mids and clear highs.

Pros: Very slim design, big sound, very realistic

Cons: Pricey

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a pair of old Klipsch Reference Series speakers, model RP-3 I was using in my home theater room that I had for several years. The foam wore out around the small midrange woofers so I decided to replace them with these speakers. Unfortunately, in my opinion these speakers do not perform as well as my old Klipsch RP-3s. The tweeters/horn reproduction does not even come close. The base reproduction comes close, but I would still give the edge to my RP-3s. It is unfortunate that Klipsch no longer makes this speaker model anymore.

Pros: Base reproduction OK.

Cons: Tweeter/horn reproduction could be better.

Fabulous Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers really blow my mind! Hooked up to a Marantz SR5008. A long time ago I had a pair of speakers with a 10" woofer and a 10" passive radiator. Loved them for the warmth they gave the bass. These are by far superior sounding speakers! Clarity, richness! The sound comes from everywhere. Incredible for movies! sounds like you are in the theatre. Couldn't be happier!

Pros: Great sound!!!!

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lock in on the Def-Tech's in general after six months of listening and researching speakers. I have a very open basement with sitting areas in front and behind the primary (standard 5.1, less separate sub) placement of these speakers (all 8040 series) Read quite a few comments regarding the placements of these speakers as it relates to getting the best sound. This was not an issue at all for me. Unpacked speakers placed towers slightly angled in to main sitting area, allowed them to play at moderate level for approx. 30hrs, cranked them up and now experiencing what I consider to be some of the most incredible sounding for speakers in this price range and 50% higher. Of course as with any sound system there is a sweet spot for listening. However, the performance of these speakers is great from any location my large and open basement. If you go with 8040 towers I strongly suggest matching with 8040 center and rears. Sweet! (Use Profile: Movies with sound slightly turned up but not trying to move and earth. Also tons of Jazz often played at level so I can hear as I move around the house.)

Pros: Easy set-up and Great sounds played soft of turned up

Cons: None so far but make sure you use the speakers legs to prevent tip overs.

Best Speakers Ever.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unbelievable sound. Use them in a 12 x 15 gameroom with no surround or center channel. The sound is perfect. Highs are clear, mids are defined, and bass rocks. Zero distortion or issues. Crystal clear. Everyone who has heard them thinks I have more speakers hidden in the room. Well worth the money. Can not go wrong. Crutchfield and UPS were outstanding on service and delivery.

Pros: Best speaker ever heard.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speakers for the price. I have a small media room and these speakers sound great for listening to movies or music. Glad I went with these over the 8020 model. No regrets, I would recommend these if you have a smaller space.

Pros: Great sound, easy to set up.

Cons: None

BP8040ST's Great sound

Written By RD, Strafford, NH on Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound, especially for movie/surround. Don't get me wrong, these are great for audio only too, but the surround is awesome (I have them couped with 8040 center and 8040 surround speakers). Built in subs in each tower conserve floor space too. Replaced an old Cambridge Soundworks system, and there is no comparison to how good these are. Crutcfiled advisors, sales and technical folks are terrific.

Pros: Excellent Sound, subs are spot on and can be adjusted to your desired level.

Cons: A bit pricey, but more than worth the extra $ in quality and performance.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These replaced a 10 year old pair of Klipsch towers. Moving the sub into my sons room makes for a better presentation in the living room. Using the Audessy mike left me with only adjusting the level of sub enhancement. I knew that the Klipsch horns were more efficient but the horns have a better detail on the highs. These speakers are very smooth otherwise and my son was surprised at the authority they possessed while watching Red Tails. He commented that a speaker this slim didn't impress him until he heard the rumble and dialogue reproduced in a very clear manner. I listened to them at an AV store and want as impressed as I was with them at home. Great buy and value.

Pros: No external sub needed, balanced sound from a very slim speaker, strong dialogue performance, dual subs may disturb neighbors if in apartment.

Cons: High end could possess a slightly more detailed sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers. The sound coming out these speakers, and without a separate subwoofer is something you will need to experience yourself. I can write a book trying to convince you, but reality need to have a PAIR to believe.

Pros: Excellent sound

Cons: Price...but is worth it.

Very satisfied

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was able to get permission from my wife for the speaker upgrade and couldn't be happier. The BP8040ST were a nice size choice and work in my smaller room. I previously listened to the BP8060's, but decided they were too much for my 11x15 room. At loud volumes, they can approach the feeling and sound of a live concert. Wife was impressed. Having powered subwoofer in each speaker seems to make the sound more realistic and less boomy than the subwoofer I replaced. Music you know sounds different, usually better, but I have noticed a few recordings that I have are not that great and you can tell.

Pros: Realistic sound. Dual bass is cleaner.

Cons: Expensive for me, but expect this to be a 10 year speaker.

Speaker Features

Speaker Features

Bipolar Design: The Definitive Technology BP-8040ST is a 3rd generation "SuperTower." This bipolar speaker contains drivers on the front and rear of the cabinet. The BP-8040ST uses a new patent-pending design called Forward Focused Bipolar Array. By radiating sound both forward and rearward, the speaker produces sound as it is in real life, with improved pinpoint localization of soloists, greater placement flexibility, and superior intelligibility.

Non-Resonant Tapered Cabinet: The BP-8040ST features a highly-engineered inert and resonance-free heavy MDF (medium-density fiberboard) cabinet to prevent coloring the sound. The front of the enclosure is tapered to make it appear slimmer. Wherever a driver is attached to the cabinet, a second layer of MDF is attached to prevent the drivers from causing vibration to the rest of the enclosure. The sealed midrange enclosures serve as braces for the side walls, while MDF cross braces near the woofer further stiffen the cabinet. The entire enclosure is wrapped in a cloth "grille sock", while the high-gloss polymer composite end-cap and bottom panel add a touch of elegance.

High-Definition Drivers: The BP-8040ST utilizes two cast-basket 3-1/2" high-definition polymer composite midrange drivers surrounding a 1" annealed Pure Aluminum dome tweeter in a D'Appolito front array. On the rear, there is a single identical 3-1/2" driver and the same 1" aluminum dome tweeter as used in the front array. The front and rear arrays are housed in separately sealed MDF enclosures to isolate the midranges from the influence of the subwoofer. The drivers feature Definitive Technology's patented 2nd-generation Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges, allowing longer, more linear excursion over a wider area. A new patent-pending Linear Response Waveguide smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wider area.

Built-in Powered Subwoofer: The BP-8040ST is equipped with a long-excursion, side-firing 8" subwoofer, driven by a 300-watt Class D amplifier with an integrated Digital Signal Processor. The subwoofer is pressure-coupled with two 8" Low Bass Radiators. The combination of the active subwoofer and two bass radiators gives you 30% more surface area than a single 12" woofer, but with better control, speed, and detail. The benefits of a built-in subwoofer include:

  • Eliminates the need for a separate subwoofer that takes up additional floor space.
  • More bass output from two subwoofers, compared to one.
  • Two subwoofers reduce standing wave room resonances and dead zones for more evenly distributed bass.
  • The subwoofers are perfectly integrated and blended with the mids and highs, eliminating the crossover and phase controls of a separate subwoofer.

Subwoofer Volume: The level of the subwoofer (relative to the other drivers) can be adjusted using the rotary dial on the back panel of the speaker. Once the bass level is set, the overall volume of the speaker system can be controlled by the receiver/amplifier.

Auto Power: The BP-8040ST has a special circuit that automatically turns on the amplifier when a signal is fed to the speaker. The LED on the back panel will glow when a signal is sensed and the amplifier turns on. After the signal ceases, it may take up to an hour for the amplifier to turn off. When first powering up after being unplugged, the LED will flash for about 30 seconds while the firmware is loading.

Stabilizer Feet: The speaker comes with four stabilizer feet which attach to the bottom of the cabinet, two per side, with the supplied self-tapping screws. Each foot has a threaded insert to allow you to screw in the supplied carpet spikes or smooth floor glides, depending upon the type of floor they're being placed upon. Four additional threaded inserts are provided on the bottom panel (along with 4 additional carpet spikes and floor glides) in case you decide not to use the stabilizer feet. The spikes and glides add approximately 1" to the overall height of the speaker.

Placement: The BP-8040ST Bipolar speakers have a lot of flexibility when it comes to placement and positioning. It is recommended that the speakers be placed at least 4" from a back wall, and at least 6" from a side wall. When used as left and right main speakers, you should set up the speakers and the listening position in an equilateral triangle, with the speaker cabinets turned slightly inward.

Binding Posts: The BP-8040ST is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts on the back of the cabinet to attach your receiver's speaker wire. The terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, single and dual banana plugs. Recommended amplifier power: 20 to 300 watts RMS.

LFE Input: For the powered subwoofer, the BP-8040ST has a single RCA LFE (low-frequency effects) input. Since you'll be using two speakers, you will need a Y-adapter to split the LFE output from your receiver to each subwoofer.

Wiring Options/Speaker Setup: You can connect the BP-8040ST in one of two ways, with or without the LFE connection. If you use only speaker wire, you should set the speaker setup on the receiver to "Large" and Sub to "No." If you connect the speaker with speaker wire and the LFE, the speaker setup should be "Large" and "Yes."

Note: It is recommended that you do not use the receiver's auto setup function, as it is often ineffective in setting up and adjusting speakers with built-in subwoofers.

AC Power: The speaker has an AC power input (IEC 2-prong type) on the back panel for plugging in the powered subwoofer. A 7' AC power cord is included.
