Towering sound for movies and music

Don't just watch your favorite movies, live them with the BP-8080ST, the flagship speaker in Definitive's Bipolar SuperTowerT line. This innovative speaker uses a unique driver design with both front- and rear-firing speaker arrays to surround you with rich, lifelike sound. A potent powered subwoofer built into the bottom of the cabinet delivers intense bass. Even in large rooms, you'll experience a huge, three-dimensional soundstage that pulls you into your music concerts and movies as if you were there. Plus, this speaker has attractive high-gloss black top and bottom caps with a cloth grille-wrapped enclosure, making it a sophisticated addition to your home theater setup.

Bipolar speaker technology brings your favorite recordings to life

sound waves

Front and rear speaker arrays work together to create enveloping sound.

Here's how it works: direct sound from the front two midrange drivers and tweeter arrives at your ears first, to provide clear, focused imaging. That's followed by sound from the rear mid and tweeter, which is slightly delayed, to enhance spaciousness. The combination creates a lush, seamless soundstage that's more like the way we hear sounds in real life. And thanks to Definitive's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) drivers, your music and surround effects will sound incredibly clear, allowing you to pinpoint the soloist in a band or the direction of a jaguar's call in the jungle.

Powerful bass built right into the cabinet

At the base of the speaker is a 12" side-firing subwoofer coupled to two passive radiators. This trio creates a total surface area greater than that of a traditional 18" woofer, but with better bass control, speed, and detail than a single huge woofer could achieve. A built-in 455-watt amplifier powers the subwoofer, delivering hard-hitting bass that eliminates the need for an external sub. And because a subwoofer is built into the cabinet, bass output is already perfectly blended with the mids and the highs. All you have to do is set the bass volume to match your room and taste, then sit back and enjoy your music and movie soundtracks.

Build a complete Definitive Bipolar home theater system using perfectly matched centers (see the CS-8040HD, CS-8060HD, and CS-8080HD) and bipolar surrounds (see the SR-8040BP and SR-8080BP).

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered pair of 8080ST's with matching 8080 center and surrounds and an Onkyo TX-NR929 and Oppo 105. I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to these speakers. Room size is 15' W x 18' L. Stereo imaging is everything i'd hoped it would be. As others have said, although bass is substantial, it's not overwhelming, vocals can be clearly heard when listening to music in 2 channel stereo. Movie sound effects are great, nice having two built in subs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a very high expectation for these speakers given the glowing reviews on this site. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. I can't help but smile every time I turn them on.

I purchased these 8080ST towers along with a center channel and a pair of surrounds. The basic two channel music performance creates a sound stage that is truly impressive. I have them positioned roughly 12 inches from the back wall and approximately 15 feet from each other. As the product description states they truly wrap you in sound. The base is incredible. It's deep, full, and tight. It is not muddy or boomy and blends very well the mids and highs. It did take me a little time dial in the base level for my listening environment.

Home theater applications are even better. It brings a whole new level of enjoyment to movies you have seen multiple times. Sounds present with a crispness and warmth like never before. I find myself turning my head looking for the sudden explosion or being wrapped into the scene now that I hear sounds from the surround speakers I never heard before.

Whether or not speakers need a break-in period has been debated but I know that after 10 days of daily use, I feel that they sound smoother and better blended than when I first hooked them up.

Great tower I love the way these bump been very happy with them for the last 6 months

Pros: sound

Cons: none

More than I expected!

Written By Plainscraps, Atlanta on Saturday, May 25, 2013

I purchased these before the holidays of 2012 to "stand in" for my Magnepan speakers that were being factory refurbished. I simply wanted a fairly accurate speaker to listen to my 2 channel music while Magnepan's were getting a facelift. I bought these on a whim (not auditioned) and at the recommendation of an unknown sales associate who had no idea who I was ultimately going to purchase them from. Well, I never buy middle priced equipment without an audition. Only used. These were purchsed at an amazing price that included (2) surround dipoles and a center channel to go with them. I must say, when I first hooked them up and turned them on, I was just short of astonished. I was expecting a pair of speakers that would suit my needs for a month or so, when in all actuality, I would be honored to keep them as my primary 2 channel or my fronts in a 5.1 environment. They sound that good. As others have indicated, the bass is substantial, yet containable. The mids are wonderful as is the treble. Never harsh. I run all of my music with no tone loops enabled as not to color my music. Only the Maggies (and these) so far can provide that level of comfortable listening for me. I have used these with the following 2 channel equipment. A Classe' preamp, a NAD preamp, a Music Hall and Denon turntables. A Oppo Blu-Ray player with audioquest cablling. Amplification by 5 monoblock Outlaw amplifiers. In the 'round I use a Marantz processor. Buy them! Period!

Pros: Accuracte, non- colored speakers. Very fluid. Verrry easy on the ears. Very attractive.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Good Speakers

Very accurate speakers. The subs are smooth, with no boominess. They seem to translate very well. Still breaking in, so I expect they will only get better.

Absolutely Amazing Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'd waited nearly 30 years to get to the point where I could finally afford the HT system of my dreams - and have a room to place it in. That time arrived and I shopped carefully and listened to a lot of speakers. I'm an audio/video engineer by trade - so I knew the sound I wanted to have. My search narrowed in on Paradigm Studio 100's and their Studio series sub's. I loved the sound but the system was above my price max. I thought the best alternative where the Golden Ear Tritons - which sounded great next to the Paradigm's. Then I heard the Def Tech BP6060's in a Magnolia Store and fell in love. The 8080's were no where to be heard, so I trusted that they would sound the same as the 6060's but fill my bigger room better. I knew they would have plenty of bottom end - but I wanted the assurance of lows measured on the Richter scale - so I combined the 8080's with Paradigm's Studio 12 sub. I added the SR-8080 surrounds and matching center. I like all kinds of music - but classic and progressive rock are my favs. Live concert Blu-Ray's on this system are beyond belief - better then being there! At all power levels, the sonic quality and sound stage are beyond description. I placed the 8080's about 10 inches from the front walls and the rear firing reflected sound delivers a rich and live soundtage that not even the Paradigm Studio 100's could deliver. A well mixed 5.1 DTS HD live mixed concert - like Toto's "Falling In Between" are breathtaking! No regrets - buy them

Pros: Not enough starts to give! Impeccable sonic quality at all levels, quality construction, tremendous sound stage with reflected rear firing drivers, incredible bass without a sub if desired, good value - no need to spend more on "boutique" speakers

Cons: There - simply are none - this, in my mind, is a perfect system

Audio Extacy!!!

Written By Todd R., Senoia, GA on Thursday, March 08, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Can I have more stars to give please? I labeled this review Audio Extacy and I couldn't be any more accurate. I have been an audiophile since I was blowing up the speakers on my brothers stereo at 5 years old. I heard Definitive Technlogy first Super Towers 17 years ago, and was just waiting until I could pull the trigger on my own set. I finally have them and they bring tears to my eyes with how pure they are.

These beasts are Sonic Perfection if I can copy another reviewer, there is no better description. At low volumes they are perfectly clear, I hear parts of my music I have never heard before. At high volumes100-110+ db (I have childrens hearing I have to protect) they are STILL perfectly accurate. I tell my wife every week how much I love this system. Music and movies are all handled with ease. I can't imagine having to spend $10K a speaker to beat these.

If you can't decide if you should spend this kind of money ,if you consider yourself an audiophile on a budget and need music as much as you need air to live, drop the money and let these speakers enrichen you life more than the $3,000 ever could in any other way.

If you want the perfect system buy the 8080 Center and Surrounds and be absorbed by your new found nirvana. Don't buy them anywhere else, the BEST customer support is ONLY at CRUTCHFIELD.

Pros: Attractive design, musical purity. Soaring highs, perfectly matched midrange, and concrete cracking bass if you want. They take everything you can throw at them and just play and stir your soul doing it.

Cons: Heavy, but worth every pound for what they're capable of. Don't disappear in a room, but with the right entertainment system they compliment the decor and you can admire the visual.

Great speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great speakers, can handle almost anything you throw at them. Got the whole 8080 setup with free satellites. They have amazing clarity and the bass is overwhelming. I'm Running them at about 20% and the neighbors are probably not happy. Definitely no need for sub.

Pros: Sound quality. Took a while to break in though. Bass / radiators. Solid heavy built. Cat proof so far (I have three). Can change the sleeve easily if necessary. I'm not much of an audiophile but a friend that owns M0n!tor Audio Bronze said these are much better

Cons: Setup with Audigy can get complicated/inaccurate. Still not sure if and how I should hook-up the LFE. You have to run power cables for all three front speakers. Had to buy new ones as these are short (standard computer power cable). You need good room setup with a nice empty wall and plenty of room to put them in proper position to enjoy the bipolar soundstage Worth every bit of hassle though.

The finest Speakers I've ever heard

Written By Rome, Houston, TX on Wednesday, February 02, 2011

Delicate highs. Dead accurate midrange. Deep, powerful & effortless bass.
Simply stated, these are the finest speakers that have ever graced my living room. I have finally achieved sonic perfection. Most quality speakers perform well with movies or music but the BP-8080STs are equally adept at both. I have a very high quality pair of stand mounted monitors with European drivers. These speakers have received very favorable reviews. I thought if the Def Techs can produce 95% of the sound of my XLs but perform great with movies then, I'd be satisfied.
I'm here to tell you that satisfied is not a good enough word to describe the beautiful, cohesive, all of a whole sound that the BP-8080s produce.
They bring the performance 5th row center. You are magically transported to the venue. Be it intimate jazz club, Concert hall or even below deck in a creaky wooden war ship. The built-in subs obviate the need for separate powered subwoofers. This makes the speakers very easy to drive with modestly powered receivers but feed these babies plenty of clean power from a separate amp and they simply transform!

I find myself punching out at exactly 5:00pm and rushing home so that I can spend my evenings rediscovering my music collection.

I can't recommend them any more highly. If you have the means, then, by all means, Get Them!

Speaker Features

Speaker Features

Bipolar Design: The Definitive Technology BP-8080ST is a 3rd generation "SuperTower." This bipolar speaker contains drivers on the front and rear of the cabinet. The BP-8080ST uses a new patent-pending design called Forward Focused Bipolar Array. By radiating sound both forward and rearward, the speaker produces sound as it is in real life, with improved pinpoint localization of soloists, greater placement flexibility, and superior intelligibility.

Non-Resonant Tapered Cabinet: The BP-8080ST features a highly-engineered inert and resonance-free heavy MDF (medium-density fiberboard) cabinet to prevent coloring the sound. The front of the enclosure is tapered to make it appear slimmer. Wherever a driver is attached to the cabinet, a second layer of MDF is attached to prevent the drivers from causing vibration to the rest of the enclosure. The sealed midrange enclosures serve as braces for the side walls, while MDF cross braces near the woofer further stiffen the cabinet. The entire enclosure is wrapped in a cloth "grille sock", while the high-gloss polymer composite end-cap and bottom panel add a touch of elegance.

High-Definition Drivers: The BP-8080ST utilizes two cast-basket 5-1/4" high-definition polymer composite midrange drivers surrounding a 1" annealed Pure Aluminum dome tweeter in a D'Appolito front array. On the rear, there is a single identical 5-1/4" driver and the same 1" aluminum dome tweeter as used in the front array. The front and rear arrays are housed in separately sealed MDF enclosures to isolate the midranges from the influence of the subwoofer. The drivers feature Definitive Technology's patented 2nd-generation Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges, allowing longer, more linear excursion over a wider area. A new patent-pending Linear Response Waveguide smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wider area.

Built-in Powered Subwoofer: The BP-8080ST is equipped with a long-excursion, side-firing 12" subwoofer, driven by a 455-watt Class D amplifier with an integrated Digital Signal Processor. The subwoofer is pressure-coupled with two 12" Low Bass Radiators. The combination of the active subwoofer and two bass radiators gives you 33% more surface area than a single 18" woofer, but with better control, speed, and detail. The benefits of a built-in subwoofer include:

  • Eliminates the need for a separate subwoofer that takes up additional floor space.
  • More bass output from two subwoofers, compared to one.
  • Two subwoofers reduce standing wave room resonances and dead zones for more evenly distributed bass.
  • The subwoofers are perfectly integrated and blended with the mids and highs, eliminating the crossover and phase controls of a separate subwoofer.

Subwoofer Volume: The level of the subwoofer (relative to the other drivers) can be adjusted using the rotary dial on the back panel of the speaker. Once the bass level is set, the overall volume of the speaker system can be controlled by the receiver/amplifier.

Auto Power: The BP-8080ST has a special circuit that automatically turns on the amplifier when a signal is fed to the speaker. The LED on the back panel will glow when a signal is sensed and the amplifier turns on. After the signal ceases, it may take up to an hour for the amplifier to turn off. When first powering up after being unplugged, the LED will flash for about 30 seconds while the firmware is loading.

Stabilizer Feet: The speaker comes with four stabilizer feet which attach to the bottom of the cabinet, two per side, with the supplied self-tapping screws. Each foot has a threaded insert to allow you to screw in the supplied carpet spikes or smooth floor glides, depending upon the type of floor they're being placed upon. Four additional threaded inserts are provided on the bottom panel in case you decide not to use the stabilizer feet. The spikes and glides add approximately 1" to the overall height of the speaker.

Placement: The BP-8080ST Bipolar speakers have a lot of flexibility when it comes to placement and positioning. It is recommended that the speakers be placed at least 4" from a back wall, and at least 6" from a side wall. When used as left and right main speakers, you should set up the speakers and the listening position in an equilateral triangle, with the speaker cabinets turned slightly inward.

Binding Posts: The BP-8080ST is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts on the back of the cabinet to attach your receiver's speaker wire. The terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, single and dual banana plugs. Recommended amplifier power: 20 to 400 watts RMS.

LFE Input: For the powered subwoofer, the BP-8080ST has a single RCA LFE (low-frequency effects) input. Since you'll be using two speakers, you will need a Y-adapter to split the LFE output from your receiver to each subwoofer.

Wiring Options/Speaker Setup: You can connect the BP-8080ST in one of two ways, with or without the LFE connection. If you use only speaker wire, you should set the speaker setup on the receiver to "Large" and Sub to "No." If you connect the speaker with speaker wire and the LFE, the speaker setup should be "Large" and "Yes."

Note: It is recommended that you do not use the receiver's auto setup function, as it is often ineffective in setting up and adjusting speakers with built-in subwoofers.

AC Power: The speaker has an AC power input (IEC 2-prong type) on the back panel for plugging in the powered subwoofer. A 7' AC power cord is included.
