Overview

Our take on the Definitive Technology CS-8080HD

The CS-8080HD has two 5-1/4" midranges flanking a 1" dome tweeter, for perfectly blended highs and mids. The pure aluminum dome tweeter has a silk surround, which helps it reveal lots of sonic detail without ever sounding harsh. And thanks to Definitive's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) drivers, your movie dialogue and special effects will sound clear, never muddy. The upward-firing woofer requires only one inch of clearance, so this powerful speaker works whether it's placed in the open or in an A/V cabinet.

Hear and feel the power of Definitive Technology's best center channel speaker

Treat your ears to the drama and intensity of home theater sound like they've never heard before. Unlike conventional center channel speakers, the CS-8080HD has a 5" x 10" subwoofer, reinforced by dual passive radiators and driven by a built-in 300-watt amplifier. It reproduces the vocal nuances of your favorite actors while ensuring that any special effects that are anchored to your screen have full bass impact. Get ready for dynamic performance and a huge, three-dimensional soundstage from all three of your front speakers.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. Center Channel Speaker Above The Rest

Michael from Mountain Lakes, NJ on 3/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I auditioned many center channel speakers with my home theater system and was left overly impressed with the DT CS-8080HD. I was amazed how much more dialogue and sound I picked up with the 8080 than with the other speakers I brought home to demo. I no longer need to use my hearing aids in order to enjoy my theater system. Its secret weapon is its built-in 300 watt subwoofer. The bass brings out the monster in this speaker. There does need to be some fine tuning via the help of the included volume control but once you've found that sweet spot you'll never want to listen to another center channel speaker again. The CS-8080HD is a must if you have the budget and space for it. I highly recommend purchasing it.

Pros: Crystal clear dialogue Subwoofer is a gamer changer Quality build Impressive looking speaker

Cons: Expensive Large footprint Heavy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is not an average or a common home theater center channel speaker. It's nothing like you've ever heard. Not even anything that you could dream of. ITS A MONSTER AND A BEAST. It's an awesome speaker that too good to be true, but rest assured. ITS ALL TRUE. It somehow sounds better than if an actual person stood in front of you and spoke. I know it sounds crazy but the dialogue on this puppy is to die for. The Active subwoofer makes a world of difference and is incomparable to most if the center channels out there. It is pricy but you get what you pay for. Im verry happy with the looks, size, quality, sound, sound and the SOUND. I also love the sound lol. I know I mentioned sound over and over but when you own one yourself, you won't blame me :) worth every penny.

Pros: Out Of This World Sound. Amazng built quality and sturdy. Beautiful to look at and crystal clear dialogue.

Cons: Regret not buying it sooner. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry :( lol

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned Def Technology products for 15 years now (BP10, BP8 and CLR2002). I love my BP10 and BP8 tower speakers and I'm still using them in my current set up today. Having said that, I have always been dissatisfied with my CLR2020 center channel due to lack of low end base and unnatural sound. When I saw that Def Tech released CS-8000 series with built-in powered subs, I was sold.. Replacing my CLR2002 with the CS-8080-HD made a HUGE improvement to my system. I don't have to switch to 2 Ch stereo mode anymore when playing music. This center channel is amazing, very natural blend between left and right speakers and you can push the volume to the limit.. I absolutely love this Center channel and is well worth the cost.. Very, very impressed with the CS-8080. I rarely give any product 5 starts due the fact I am very picky, but 5 stars is well deserved. Outstanding Job Definitive Technology!!!!

Pros: Excellent sounding Center Channel

Excellent CCS

Karlos from Austin, TX on 9/4/2014

Bought this Center Channel Speaker (CCS) 3 months ago and I wished I had purchased it much sooner. The clarity that is now from dialogue whether it be from watching regular television or a movie is great. I no longer have to turn it up so loud that my neighbors know what I am watching. I can keep low volumes and still hear everything. Bass can be overwhelming at loud volumes and I clearly learned what rattled I my home. Once, I found that sweat spot on the amp level it is remarkable. A must have CCS. Money well spent.

Nice Center Channel

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this with 8080 fronts and surrounds. Not only is dialog clear, but I now hear substantial bass information coming from center. This is placed on a low profile tempered glass entertainment center. Actually had to remove everything from the same shelf this was on because the bass would rattle everything. Was not expecting that from a center channel. Have had setup since April 2014, satisfied so far.

Def Tech CS-8080HD

ChuckG from Jacksonville, FL on 10/1/2013

The Def Tech CS-8080HD is very disappointing for as much as it costs and the reviews I read. First the sub-woofer has to be set low or the speaker vibrates on the shelf it is sitting on. If set to a higher volume a loud passage such as an explosion in a movie the speaker distorts. The dialog at low volume is hard to understand and my wife keeps turning to volume up on my Pioneer Elite SC-27 receiver so she can hear what is being said

Pros: Generally good sound overall

Cons: Overpriced, and would not recommend a center channel with a built in sub-woofer, its overkill.

Very Nice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Happy with my purchase the sound is strong and loud. No complaints sometimes it may sound a little muffled but that might also be my screen infront of it...not sure yet.

Pros: Great set with all 8080s

Cons: none

Features

Powered Subwoofer: The CS-8080HD features a 5x10-inch racetrack style subwoofer powered by the built in 300 watt amplifier. The active driver is pressure coupled to two 5x10-inch racetrack style passive radiators for a total bass radiating area larger than a 12-inch round woofer. The class D amplifier features an integrated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that equalizes the woofer system to extend and smooth the bass response. A Linkwitz-Riley crossover network maintains a smooth output around the crossover frequency. The upward-firing woofer requires 1" of clearance above the enclosure.

Midrange: The two midranges used in the CS-8080HD are 5-1/4" second generation BDSS (Balanced Double Surround System) drivers. The midrange cones are injection molded polymer composite with cast aluminum baskets. BDSS is Definitive's patented technology that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges allowing longer and more linear excursion for greater clarity and detail. The new Linear Response Waveguide (patent pending) smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wide area (the HD in the part number stands for High Dispersion).

Tweeter: The tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, heat-treated to relax the crystal structure, then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs.

Voice-Matched: The CS-8080HD is a full-range low-distortion center channel speaker, timbre-matched to blend perfectly with the Definitive Technology BP-8080ST SuperTower main speakers.

Binding Posts: The speaker terminals are gold-plated, 5-way binding posts and will accommodate spade connectors, single or dual banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Line Input: In addition to the speaker level inputs (which are required), if the connected receiver/amplifier has a center channel line level output, it can also be used to send signal to the powered subwoofer section of the CS-8080HD (this input should not be used with the receiver's LFE output).

Bass Level: A rotary knob on the back panel controls the output level (volume) of the powered subwoofer.

Auto Power: When a signal is delivered to the CS-8080HD the amplifier automatically turns on and the rear panel LED lights. Once the signal is removed the amplifier automatically turns off (after about an hour).

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I bought Definitive technology tower speakers (8060ST) and the price of the 8080 was so good I felt that it was worth the premium over the cs8060HD center channel. The reviews I've read also state that the cs8080 is a better performing speaker. I have listened to the speakers elsewhere and that is what really made me decide to go for it and purchase the cs8080. [ Christopher  Apr 20, 2016 ]
Great speaker [ The  Mar 30, 2016 ]
I love the DT brand. I currently have the CS-8060HD. I'm excited to hear the CS-8080HD larger speakers and higher capacity amp for its built-in subwoofer. [ M  Feb 22, 2016 ]
One of the BEST center channel speakers for home theater EVER. (My personal favorite:) [ Raymond  Jan 04, 2016 ]
Obviously the price is what caught my eye at first and then all the good reviews is what helped guide my decision for purchase. [ Steven  Jan 01, 2016 ]

1 question already asked

Well, the center channel speaker is part of a 7:2 home theater surround system. We're using an Epson ceiling mounted projector from a ~15' distance, against a ~117" diagonal wall mounted fabric screen. The speaker is located in a cabinet below the screen with the cable box, BluRay player, Denon receiver, and a Trip Lite UPS/surge protector. The speaker is on a shelf by itself, above the other components inside the cabinet. The cabinet is a wall to wall installation, much like kitchen cabinets, set firmly on the floor and bolted into the back wall. There is no point for the speaker vibrations to interfere with the video image, either at the projector, or at the BluRay player. [ Gary N.  Apr 18, 2016 ]
I have a very low media center. This center speaker is sitting in between two large amplifiers which weigh 100 lb and 60lb. So the entire media center is very heavily loaded. This could be one of the reason it does not vibrate. Other thing I have noticed is that the sub woofer in the center speaker is not as large as my two front speakers. And the speaker itself is a little bit heavy. This could be another reason it does not create any vibrations. So far I am very pleased with this speaker and I am glad I bought it. [ Kirit  Feb 08, 2016 ]
I really like this center speaker because of the larger front speakers more than the sub it self. I have a kick ass sub to go along with my system. So bass is no problem the cool Thing about this box is that you can control how much bass is put out because of the handy dandy knob on the back. The larger front speaker make the dialog of the tv. That much more enjoyable. I throughly enjoy this speaker set up. [ Robert  Feb 07, 2016 ]
I put shard this center channel a few months ago. I have not experienced any of the issues you have concerns about. I use it with a projector and 110 inch screen hanging on wall above the center channel. Works great. [ WILLIAM K  Feb 06, 2016 ]
I have no problems like that. I love them, and am listening to them now. I still need 4 speakers. Two surround, and two rear speakers. I will be getting two very soon now. I hope they work out for you. Remember, you can always turn the bass down a bit. Heaven forbid.LMAO. [ Margie  Feb 06, 2016 ]
You don't turn up the bass level too high. There is a knob behind the speaker to adjust bass level. No need for high bass from center. [ Raymond  Feb 06, 2016 ]
It doesn't. Just leave the dial at the twelve o'clock or so position [ Marcos G.  Feb 06, 2016 ]
never have had this speaker cause any issues and my Blue ray player is right next to speaker. love the speaker and the bass output. no vibration. sitting directly on wood shelf in my set up [ bryan  Feb 06, 2016 ]
I guess because of the weight (38 lbs.) it doesn't shake anything but your ear drums. It evens the sound, and believe me it's GREAT! [ Charles  Feb 06, 2016 ]
