Enjoy 3D sound from this slender, room-friendly sound bar

Definitive Technology's Mythos SSA-50 gives you surprisingly three-dimensional home theater sound when installing a complete five-speaker system isn't an option. Definitive's Spatial Array™ technology precisely controls which sounds are played by each of the nine drivers, creating the illusion that you are surrounded by five separate high-performance speakers. The result is a wide listening area with excellent performance to the sides, in which you can clearly pinpoint action happening to your left and to your right. The SSA-50 doesn't depend on bouncing sound off of your walls, unlike some sound bar speakers, so it works well in just about any room. And it's designed to perform equally as well with your favorite music as it does with your Hollywood blockbusters.

High-tech speaker design produces detailed surround-like effects

The SSA-50 houses nine total drivers — five for the front soundstage and four to handle the rear channels. Three of those drivers have a pure aluminum dome tweeter mounted in front of the speaker cone, for extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess. And Definitive's BDSS driver technology helps increase the tiny speakers' output without increasing the size of the enclosure. Connect it to a multi-channel receiver and you've got a simple, high-performance home theater solution that's sure to impress.

Gorgeous aircraft-grade aluminum cabinet

The slim enclosure is made of stunning black hand-polished aluminum, and is sized to matched TVs with screens measuring 50" or larger. The SSA-50 can be wall mounted using the supplied mounting bracket, or placed on a shelf in front of your TV.

Add Definitive's ProSub800 subwoofer to get full-range sound that reaches down to 20 Hz.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

This soundbar is used in my smaller media room and it is everything I wanted and more. Sound is detailed and I am surprised that the surround sound is as true as it is. It is driven by my older Rotel RSX-1057 along with a Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000. Needless to say I am more than impressed.

Pros: Great detailed sound! Same Def Tech sound I love grown to love through the years.

Cons: Nothing. I does everything I want it to.

Please watch out about the installation

First off, the sound is great (+5 stars). This only partially made up for the incredible hassle of setting the soundbar up (-3 stars), as some of the other reviews have mentioned.

A mounting bracket must be used whether you mount or stand the speaker The process of installing the mounting bracket onto the speaker is (in concept) pretty easy: Slide two screws on the back of the speaker onto the mount. The problem is that on the bracket the cutout for the speaker wires is ridiculously tiny. Ridiculous meaning that both the upper and lower speaker jacks were partially covered by the bracket! It took me a good half hour of cursing before I could get the speaker wire connected and the bracket attached.

Finally, since i was not mounting the soundbar to the wall, I had to connect an L bracket to the mounting bracket -- a foot then screwed into the L bracket. Connecting the two brackets required screwing in the screw onto a nut that was "welded" to the main bracket. This nut broke off almost immediately -- on both L brackets. As a result, both L brackets are only wobbly connected to the mounting bracket.

If the sound wasn't great, I would have returned this soundbar in a flash.

Pros: sound

Cons: extremely poor mount design and build

Pros: Crutchfield's legendary support & response, Great looks, Solid Construction.

Cons: Inadequate packaging, Average sound for price.

Mythos SSA-50 Sound bar

Written by: Jim from Plano,TX on August 12, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent 5.1 surround sound for a sound bar. One limitation encountered with my Onkyo TX-NR828 receiver is that I cannot take advantage of all of the Audessy features that include DSX and Dynamic Volume because Definitive Technology advises against using speaker setup applications such as Audessy EQ. Onkyo's implementaton of the Audessy features requires use of EQ in order to implement DSX and Dynamic Volume.

I bought the ssa5 and the sound quality sucks so after do research I bout the ssa-50 and the sound quality is better than I expected. It's being powered with a pioneer elite vsx-42 and a velodine 12 sub. All I can say the sound and surround spund I get is superb. Wall mounting is a little work but not to difficult

Pros: Spund quality , styling

Cons: Wall mount

Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 Installed in Cabinet

Written by: GeneM from Port St. Lucie, FL on May 23, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks good, sounds okay. I bought this unit because it is a perfect fit inside my gloss black Sony Style TV stand and matches the finish so well that you do not even notice that it is there. I looks like it is a part of the stand (I did have to devise a mounting method). It is powered by a Denon 1912 receiver which also feeds an older 90W, eight -inch cone subwoofer. This unit is located in a central common area in the house where appearance was a big factor. I have a separate dedicated home theater for more serious movie and TV watching.

Pros: Looks very nice in my installation. A+ for aesthetics. Sounds in mid-range are clear and distinct.

Cons: Sound is not nearly as full as almost any half-way decent tower speakers. Surround sound effects are minimal. Sound bars in general are a significant compromise if you are looking for home theater type surround sound.

Mythos on a Denon AVR1912

Written by: Josh from Sherwood, Oregon on May 4, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed the SSA5-50 in our family room, 16ft wide by 22ft wide, and it sounds wonderful. Clear and crisp sound on the five channel configuration from the Denon AVR-1912; 90-watt per channel discrete amplifier. I typically run the bar at about -35 to -40 db depending in the source and is more than enough to fill the room. Bass is significantly lacking as expected, but is complimented very nicely with the pro-sub 800.

During install I would recommend installing speaker wire to the binding posts first then attaching the mounting bracket. This will greatly ease installation due to the confined space around the binding posts.

Additionally, I have a 47" LCD sitting above the soundbar and the looks are aesthetically pleasing, so feel confident in going with this over the SSA-42 despite a less than 50" TV. You never know when you will go bigger, but you will never go smaller on the TV.

Pros: Compact size, power handling capability, quality construction, brand power.

Cons: Lack of room for installation at binding post, weight is significant, depth may cause issues for some.

Engineering Nightmare

Written by: Jim from Kensington, MD on August 1, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Someday someone at Def Tech will have to explain the engineering nightmare they've created with their stupid mounting bracket for this speaker. I didn't question the brand, quality of speaker, or price. I wanted it and I bought it. I was prepared for the nightmare as I had done my due diligence reading others opinions about the bracket. When I finally was ready to install it, on a shelf not wall, i took the bracket out to my garage and chopped it up with my recip saw. By doing so I was able to use banana plugs and didn't compromise the bracket at all, at least for a shelf application. One would assume the the engineers at Def Tech would have figured this out and resolved it by now. Speaker-GREAT, Hardware-TERRIBLE!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound, well made, provided best alternative to floor speaker system for our den. Flaw with design of wall bracket (only if used as stabilizing stand without attachment to wall): I choose to let soundbar sit below TV on shelf. The included wall bracket (attaches to back of speaker) should be used with included "feet" to stabilize speaker at desired angle. Unfortunately, if your speaker wire uses bannana cannot use the bracket...won't fit / won't work. Cut out for speaker wire not large enough in diameter to accomodate plugs. To utilize bracket, on shelf, you will need something besides straight banna plugs on speaker wire. Note, the space between speaker posts is extremely tight.

Very nice sound...all in all...nice speaker

Product Research

Overview: The Definitive Technology Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 (SSA-50) is a unique multichannel loudspeaker that provides a 5-channel surround sound experience from just one speaker. The Definitive Technology SSA-50 is the perfect surround audio solution when you are unable or unwilling to wire and place rear channel speakers in your room, but still want a home theater experience. The SSA-50 uses Definitive Technology's best drivers and tweeters for audiophile-grade sound quality so you can enjoy enveloping surround sound from a single speaker. The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 features five discrete channels to connect to your 5.1-channel Dolby Digital receiver, so you don't need to run wire to five separate speakers. The Mythos SSA-4 can be wall- or shelf-mounted using the supplied hardware.

Enclosure Design

Driver Technology

Spatial Array: The Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 incorporates Spatial Array, a unique patented technology that optimizes the spatial presentation of five-channels to create the illusion that you are surrounded by five separate high-performance speakers. Spatial Array Surround technology uses subtle, but complex directional cues to completely free the sound from the speaker enclosure and convince your ear/brain listening mechanism that you are surrounded multiple speakers. Since Spatial Array technology does not depend on bouncing sound off walls, it works in virtually any room and set-up configuration. The SSA-50 uses Spatial Array technology on the front left and right speakers as well as the surround channels, so that you get big three-dimensional imaging from both stereo and multi-channel sources.

BDSS Driver Technology: The Front left, Front right, and Center channel drivers of the SSA-50 utilize Definitive's exclusive and patent-pending Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) technology. Speaker cones usually have one support point at the circumference of the cone (called the surround), but BDSS drivers have two support points or surrounds. This design suppresses cone resonance and promotes a longer, more linear cone motion for higher output, lower distortion and more accurate frequency response. As a result you will enjoy perfectly natural and lifelike timbre with crystalline clarity on voices, musical instruments ,and movie sound effects, even at high-volume levels.

Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeter: The Definitive Technology SSA-50's tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, which has been heat-treated to relax the crystal structure and then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs. In order to keep the enclosure from being longer than popular sized video displays, Definitive engineers positioned the front channel tweeters in front of the drivers. While this is a commonly used space-saving technique, a tweeter placed in front of the driver usually interferes with the driver's sound waves. Using computer and physical modeling, Definitive engineers developed unique tweeter-housing geometry and venting that eliminates interference effects for audiophile-grade clarity, precision, and accuracy.

Drivers: The Definitive Technology Solo Surround Array 50 features three 4.5" BDSS drivers with axially-aligned 1.0" pure aluminum dome tweeters; two 4.5" BDSS high-output full-range drivers, and four 3.25" full-range high-output surround drivers.

Break-In Period: The Mythos SSA-50 will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Extruded Aluminum Enclosure: The SSA-50's enclosure is fabricated from aircraft-grade, hand-polished gloss black extruded aluminum, styled to perfectly match today's flat panel plasma and LCD TVs. Internal baffles and braces inside the enclosure eliminate interference effects between drivers and channels for true audiophile purity and maximum channel separation.

5-Way Binding Posts: The SSA-50  is equipped with 5 pairs (Front left, Front right, Center, Rear right, Rear left) of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your 5.1-channel home theater receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Placement: The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 is designed for horizontal use only. The 5-channel loudspeaker can be positioned below or above your flat-panel television. The SSA-50 matches perfectly with 50-inch an larger flat-panel televisions.

Mounting: The Definitive Technology SSA-50 comes with easy-to-install mounting hardware that allow it to mount on the wall above or below your television. The Mythos SSA-50 comes with a wall mount bracket that allows direct mounting to a wall. The SSA-50 can also be mounted directly to select flat-panel TV swing out arm-style wall mounts, so that the speaker angle changes with the TV angle. It also includes hardware that allows you to place the speaker on the TV, on a shelf , or on a table-top (surface must be at least 5-inches deep).

Angle Adjustment: The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 comes with two brackets and two feet which screw into the speaker's wall-mount bracket to stabilize the speaker and allows you to adjust the vertical angle when the system is placed on a flat horizontal surface. When you set the speaker down, the speaker will lean back and rest on these feet. By varying how far you screw in-and-out the feet, you can adjust the vertical angle of the speaker. It is recommended that you aim the center-speaker so that it aims directly towards the height of the listeners' ears.

No, this is not a receiver and it is unpowered and needs a separate receiver to function. The only inputs are the five audio channels and there are no outputs, therefore no video pass through of any kind. [ Grant  Dec 21, 2015 ]
This sounder has not inputs other than speaker terminals. Check Definitve Tech's website for more details specs. [ GUY L  Dec 21, 2015 ]
DT my this ssa-50 does not take up much room. Can mount below TV and sounds great. Have to connect it to a receiver or amp since it is a passive bar, no built in amplifier. Advantage is you can use your own sound processing. It is not hard to install. If u use the mounting bracket, run ur speaker wires through the bracket before connecting them to the binding posts; can't use banana plugs unless u place speaker on a shelf. [ manish  Jan 08, 2014 ]
It's a excellent sound bar great sound , I don't know how much room you have but everyone that comes to my house can't believe the sound quality but it might be overkill for a RV [ ROBERT  Jan 06, 2014 ]
