About the Definitive Technology Mythos Nine

Kristen Schaub

Mount this versatile speaker next to your TV and enjoy rich sound

Definitive Technology's sleek Mythos Nine looks right at home next to today's flat-panel TVs. Its versatile design means you can use a pair for your home theater's main left and right speakers, or use one as a center channel. It features many of the same technologies found in Definitive's Mythos floor-standing speakers to provide a wide soundstage, pinpoint imaging, and superb realism in a slim, wall-mountable speaker cabinet. The Mythos Nine is sized to match up as a front left/right speaker with 50" or larger flat-panel TVs, or it works well as a center channel underneath a 42" or larger set.

High-tech drivers for exceptionally detailed sound

At the center of the cabinet are two 4-1/2" midrange drivers surrounding a 1" dome tweeter. Definitive's Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) driver technology helps increase the tiny speakers' output without increasing the size of the enclosure. The pure aluminum dome tweeter produces extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess. Flanking the midranges are two 4-1/2" x 8" racetrack-shaped low bass radiators, which give the Mythos Nine better bass performance than you might expect from a slim, on-wall speaker.

Gorgeous aircraft-grade aluminum cabinet

The enclosure is made of black hand-polished aluminum for a sleek look that'll go well with most modern décors. Die-cast aluminum baskets, a resonance-free PolyStone baffle, and proprietary damping technologies built into the cabinet ensure clean sound.

Building a system

Put together a complete home theater system using Mythos on-wall speakers for your front three channels. Add on Definitive's Mythos Gem surround speakers for wraparound sound and SuperCube III subwoofer for high-impact bass. The Mythos Nine also makes a great center channel complement to Definitive's powerful Mythos STS SuperTower floor-standing speakers.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. Product Research

Overview: The Definitive Technology Mythos Nine loudspeaker offers maximum versatility for your home theater and flat-panel entertainment system; it can be used as an on-wall Front, Center, or Surround speaker, or as a shelf-mounted center speaker. The Mythos Nine features a high-gloss aircraft-grade extruded aluminum enclosure with proprietary damping technologies to ensure total rigidity and perfectly accurate sound. It also features two high-definition BDSS 4-1/2 inch drivers pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2 x 8-inch (racetrack-shaped) planar low-bass radiators, and a 1 inch (25mm) ceramic-coated pure aluminum dome tweeter with an acoustically contoured faceplate for excellent high frequency extension, detail and smoothness.

Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The Mythos Nine contains two high-definition Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) 4-1/2" drivers (patent pending) that are pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2" x 8" racetrack-shaped planar low-bass radiators for deep bass extension. The bass roll-off of the Mythos Nine is smooth and controlled, allowing it to seamlessly blend with a powered subwoofer, such as Definitive's SuperCubes, for audiophile-grade home theater power and precision.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

  • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
  • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The loudspeaker features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
  • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
  • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The voice coil is also lengthened to increase linearity and lower distortion.
  • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
  • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

Drivers: The two active 4-1/2" drivers surround a pure aluminum dome tweeter. The tweeter incorporates a newly designed voice coil, dome, and surround, as well as an acoustically contoured faceplate for unequaled high-frequency extension, detail, and smoothness.

Break-In Period: The Mythos Nine will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Extruded Aluminum Enclosure: The Mythos Nine enclosure is hand-polished gloss-black aircraft-grade extruded aluminum with proprietary damping technologies that ensure total rigidity. All components are mounted on a resonance-free PolyStone baffle. These construction technologies along with state-of-the-art drivers and tweeter serve to deliver high-quality sound with a wide soundstage, pinpoint imaging, high dynamic impact, and superb realism.

Connections

Binding Posts: The Mythos Nine is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Mythos Nine comes with easy-to-install mounting hardware that allows you to hang the speaker on the wall below, above, or beside your flat-panel television in a vertical or horizontal orientation. Using the included mounting bracket, the Mythos Nine is engineered to be placed flush with the wall and close to the edge of your television while delivering realistic sound that is accurate, with lifelike imaging and clarity. A supplied adjustable foot and two self-adhesive rubber feet permit easy shelf mounting when the speaker is used in the horizontal center-channel format.

Angle Adjustment: The Mythos Nine has a bracket with foot which screws into the speaker's wall-bracket to stabilize the speaker and allows you to adjust the vertical angle when the system is placed on a flat horizontal surface. When you set the speaker down, the speaker will lean back and rest on this foot. By varying how far you screw in-and-out the foot, you can adjust the vertical angle of the speaker. It is recommended that you aim the center-speaker so that it aims directly towards the height of the listeners' ears.

Q
A frequency response down to 38 Hz out of two 4-1/2" drivers? Are you sure this isn't Fake News?

Q
I have mythos 9 center now and seem to have to turn it up to match the sts speakers I have. Would a 10 be a better match?

Hey Ike. Answering your question is tough because we don't know what's driving your speakers(Mythos Nine and STS towers are a great set). The Mythos 9 center is the big dollar item in my set and does a great job of centralizing and separating my movie sounds, voice and just music. If you can, use your HTR's calibration mic. Makes a huuuge difference. If that's already done try looking carefully at your wire connections, just one strand at one terminal can jack the entire balance(personal experience with one of my SR-8040BPs). I don't think the 10 will fix your problem. Perhaps your towers are close to your center and are matched well enough that your center listening point has expanded further than desirable. Try moving your STS's a bit out some or backing down on their outputs. Even with the calibration though, sometimes manually balancing your system is necessary and can take time and multiple tests. I wouldn't think so - the Mythos 9 has 4-1/2" drivers which match the STS for even voicing- throwing in a 5" driver might be fine, but I would do what you are doing by adjusting the centers volume.
