Excellent sonic accuracy from this compact, versatile speaker

The ProMonitor 1000 is the top-of-line satellite speaker in Definitive's ProCinema series. This versatile, easy-to-place speaker delivers spacious imaging and a smooth, lively sonic character that's equally enjoyable for music and home theater. The sound will surprise you, but it shouldn't — the ProMonitor 1000 uses many of the same technologies as Definitive's larger, more expensive speakers.

ProMonitor 1000

High-tech driver design for warm, rich sound

The 5-1/4" midrange gets a big performance boost from the mid/bass radiator mounted in the top of the cabinet. This clever design doubles the lower-midrange radiating area without increasing the size of the enclosure, and helps provide rich, lifelike sound. A 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter produces extended highs that reveal nuance and subtle detail without a trace of edginess.

Small size

Compact, easy-to-place speaker

You can place the ProMonitor 1000 on a shelf using the integrated tri-lobed base, or mount it on your wall and out of your way using the rear-panel keyhole slot. This speaker is voice-matched with Definitive's complete ProCinema series, and can be paired with any ProCinema center or subwoofer. To create a high-performance ProCinema 1000 system, combine four ProMonitor 1000 satellites with Definitive's ProCenter 1000 and ProSub 1000.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Great Buy

Written by: Matt from Providence, RI on January 4, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solidly built, incredible sound. Higher price point gets you higher quality -what else do you want?! Purchased as part of the DT ProCinema 1000/2000. Fills my large living room with rich, high quality sound for both movies and music. Needed to run the fine-tuning function on my Marantz AVR for them to really shine, but I couldn't be happier with the investment.

Excellent clear stylish speakers. I purchased 4 and don't have any regrets. A sub is definitely needed. Speakers don't necessarily fill the room but projects sound loud and clear. I recommend

Pros: Stylish, clarity, versatile

Nice as main speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got two of these as my main left and right for my small home theater system. Really good for music and movies alike. Really nice dynamic range and frequency response. Paired it with Procenter 2000 since I read somewhere that the Procenter 1000 is under powered when paired with Promonitor 1000. And paired with the 800 for the rear channels simply to save some money.

Pros: Really good dynamic range and sound

Cons: The triangle shape does take up some space

Amazing speakers - worth the investment

Written by: Jeff C. from Connecticut on October 17, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of these speakers in May of 2015 to replace my old Polk Bookshelf speakers. Granted, I did not replace them because they broke, but because our room just didn't have the space for speaker stands anymore. I needed a wall-mountable option and figured this was a good time to upgrade.

As I started my foray into Definitive Technology with these, my system all of a sudden had a huge emphasis on the surround channels (which is where the first pair went). I had to adjust my settings on my receiver to these because they sounded that much more amazing than the old fronts (also Polk speakers w/ an old Yamaha Sub).

Then for my birthday, my wife said "Spend what you want, but make these other (black) speakers like the new white ones you just bought.

So I decided time to replace the rest. I bought two more of these and use them as front speakers - also wall-mounted. My system has never sounded so good. These speakers work so well with each other. Crisp highs, thumpin mids, and with the Prosub, amazing bass. Granted I don't get to really crank it altogether with my wife and two daughters in the house frequently, it is nice to know when I do get that rare time alone, this system can go as loud as I want with little to no drop in quality.

Not to mention these speakers also look good in pretty much any room.

I am extremely happy with four of these speakers as part of my 5.1 system. They are worth the investment. Thanks Definitive!

Pros: - Looks great in any room - Great on their own, but better with a subwoofer. - Great as surrounds or as fronts. - Flexible positioning if used on a wall - keyhole or threaded options are available.

Good Choice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As front and rear speakers with a ProCenter 2000 and a SuperCube 2000 (5.1 setup), these are great speakers at a great price. They are clear, crisp, and full. They look good and work well on ProStand 1000s, although there is no cover for the speaker wires (which are rather obtrusive especially when using banana plugs).

Pros: Compact, clean, clear, crisp sound.

Cons: No cover for speaker wires (not an issue if placed on a bookshelf, but so if used with a ProStand 1000).

Perfect size, great sound

Written by: AbiRodri from Puerto Rico on June 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They really rock. Upgrading my Energy Classic 5.1 one item at a time, this is the second Definitive item (1st the center Procinema 2000). Mounting was very simple and the profile is perfect for my 12'x19' living room and 70" 4K TV. I''m running a Dennon AVR-1912 on 5.1 and this is the best option for my environment. I watch more movies and HD programs that listen to music on my living room and this Definitive line is an excellent choice. I did a lot of search and without breaking the 401k, this may be the best or one of the best options on speakers.

Pros: Detail high frequencies that were not present on the Energy 5.1. The profile is perfect: they are there but not in your face and for a typical living room, they seems to fit naturally. Construction is nice although not wood. but sound it getting better and more crispy and detail every day. Bass is nice although I have a sub woofer, which I always prefer. The AVR 1912 may be falling short of power but enough for movies and music.

Cons: none so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I honestly could not believe how good the speakers sound. I have always been a fan of big speakers, due to the big/full sound they produce, but when my wife purchased a massive entertainment center, for our living room, I know longer had room for my JBL stadium series towers. I purchased these lil babies due to there size, wattage, and the frequency response. I also have two Klipsch down firing woofers so the lowes were not a big concern, I just needed some nice mids and highs. These lil speakers far exceeded my expectations. I was expecting to loose some sound quality by loosing my towers but honestly, after some slight adjustments, it sounded clearer and more crisp than ever. The ProMonitors are a lil pricey but honestly they are so worth it. I mainly use these for movies but even music sounds outstanding. When I first bought these I hooked two of them up, to try them out, with one 10" woofer and I was rocking with just the 3 pieces. Even at high Db levels these speakers are clean and crisp with no distortion. I can't say enough good about these speakers; if your on the fence, by them and you'll see what I mean.

Pros: Frequency response, wattage, crisp sound, and small size

Cons: Lil pricey but worth every penny

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the ProCinema 1000 system and it sounds really good. I just got the system set up, and they sound pretty good already. I'm running a Pioneer SC-1222-K digital amp (120W per channel @ 8 ohms). There's a lot to learn with this system, and there's still some adjusting to do, but I'm really satisfied with the sonic reproduction so far. For the record, I've been completely hooked on the sound of my Denon PMA-777 and KEF 104/2 with Kube for 30 years and have never found anything that sounds as sweet, and that includes this system. That being said, this is one of the best sounding 5.1 speaker systems I've heard.

Pros: Sound great Look good

Cons: Inset wire posts make it hard to use bare wires, banana plugs are a must Shiny black finish collects dust (OK, that's more because I live in a rural setting, and everything's dusty!)

Too Bass-Heavy for Me

Written by: ogret from Idaho on March 8, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There is no question these are quality speakers--they provide a clean, distortion-free presentation. They are incredibly bass-rich. Speakers more than any component are a matter of personal preference, and my impression of this speaker (and the 2000 center channel) is they would be ideal for a very large room and for movie watchers who most want immersive, foundation-moving bass effects. For me, dialogue and musical highs were way too buried in a sea of bass to be satisfying. I even preferred the 800s, but ultimately went for the more balanced Klipsch Reference speakers.

Pros: Lots of clean bass.

Cons: Way too much bass.

These speakers replaced my Polk RTi6 speakers which I have had for quite a while, but wanted to replace with something with a smaller footprint. After doing some research I finally settled on a pair of the ProMonitor 1000's and I have been very happy with the sound. I have since added a pair of the ProMonitor 800's for my rear speakers and a ProCenter 2000. Overall I am very impressed with the sound quality of the Definitive Technology speakers and feel the sound quality is an improvement over my previous speakers. As usual Crutchfield service is top notch.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers can compete with much larger, pricier speakers. My "man cave" is a fairly small area and I'm using a 100 watt Yamaha receiver to power them. You just need to plan to purchase a subwoofer with these speakers. I also bought an inexpensive Polk sub a few days later and it made a huge difference. So, for the total, I've got some great sound and I really dont think my ears could have heard a difference if I had paid over $1000.

Pros: great sound from a small package

Cons: ya gotta buy a sub, trust me, but the most basic Polk sub will do the trick

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm one of those guys who is hard to satisfy. I try many different products until I am satisfied that I have found the very best that my budget will buy. Well, after trying probably seven different sound bars including a $2000 job I decided to go back to a receiver and separate speakers. This is the third set of separates I am trying and these will be my last. My previous set was the Polk Blackstone TL3's and they were very good. Nothing bad at all to say about them but I thought I could do better. These Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000's along with the ProCenter 1000, I believe are the best that I could get for the money and much more. The size is perfect for my set-up. For my ears these speakers WOW me whether it's music, movies or TV. I am so pleased and happy that I gave these speakers a try.

Pros: Great all around sound, voice/dialog clarity.

Cons: None

I purchased these speakers for use with my computer and not for surround sound.. I hate to say it but these speakers are terrible and I knew they would be without a sub, so I use a sub and now there pretty good. My computer is powered by a H/K receiver of 80 watts rms and a Fiio E7 dac. The music is Apple lossless files.

I probably would buy these again, they look great and are very well built.but if you are not going to use a sub keep looking.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 4 PM 1000's, a PC 2000, and a SC 4000 to upgrade from an Onkyo box theater system. I was a little hesitant to spend the money but I am glad I did, there is no comparison this is the best speaker set up I have ever owned. Before I purchased I contacted both Def Tech and Crutchfield with a few questions I had and the customer service I received was excellent. I am now a Def Tech and Crutchfield enthusiast and would recommend this set up to anyone looking for a great value for what you get.

Pros: Sleak, small design allows for mounting on wall or ceiling. I have 2 on the wall and 2 on the ceiling. Crisp, clear, warm sound. Even being pushed hard they maintain great quality sound. Great value (even though I thought the cost was a little much, after setup it was without a doubt worth every penny) Customer Service from Def Tech and Crutchfield, 10 out of 10.

Cons: Have not found any yet.

Really great small speakers, look as goo a they sound. I have a denon avr1912 and it pushes them very well with no distortion. Never had a speaker and receiver that was too loud, this is! Not as big of bass output as a big box bookshelf but enough to sound realistic. Really like them a lot.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These ProMonitor 1000 speakers are spectacular performers. Especially when you consider they're small enough to serve as computer speakers.

I don't have a room-sized stereo system anymore, so I wanted to create a near-audiophile set of computer speakers. These are the speakers I ended up with, and I could not be more pleased.

For the record, here's my setup. 1. A NuForce Icon uDAC2 Digital Audio Converter. 2. A Qinpu A-3 stereo amplifier. 3. This pair of Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 Bookshelf Speakers.

This makes for a pricy computer speaker system, but the sound is spectacular.

And if you want to push the envelope, I recommend the miniAmbio ambiophonic processor. If this topic is new to you, start by Googling "ambiophonics."

PS - One of these speakers failed mechanically (the diaphragm started flapping) a few weeks after I received it and Crutchfield replaced it immediately. We do love doing business with Crutchfield.

Pros: Amazing sound quality. Small enough to use on the desk as computer speakers. Bass better than one could hope for in speakers this small. (Despite what some other reviewer said, I can't imagine needing a sub woofer with these.)

Cons: None

TV and Movie dialog and sound is crystal clear. Music sounds very good! I compared these to the Pro800 series. I think it is worth the extra money to go for the 1000 series. I have them connected to the Denon AVR-1911. Thanks Crutchfield for answering all of my questions!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these to accompany a set of low -end wall speakers. We enjoy listing to music and wanted a more full -sound experience and defined base. We had a small space for the speakers where needed, therefore choices were limited. These speakers do a fine job of filling our needs and are very plesent for music and provide a full range of sound. Not quite as clear on voice as instruments, but very acceptable. Actually, they look more expensive than they were and a great fit for limited spaces. For the money, a very good choice. We would recommed these speakers to others who were looking for value and small music- listening speakers.

These are compact, beautiful, solidly constructed, speakers with a warm sound. For certain music types that don't require a lot of bass, they'll do very well on their own. However, for serious home theater or deep bass, you will want to pair these up with a subwoofer.

This is an awesome speaker and looks sharp too. I always see the rave reviews for Definitive Technology speakers in Home A/V magazines so I knew I was getting a great speaker. You won't find a better speaker in this price range. I have it paired with the ProCenter 2000 and I couldn't be happier. My receiver is only rated at 90 watts RMS and this speaker flat-out performs. Highly recommended!!!

Overview: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 loudspeaker utilizes state-of-the-art components (BDSS driver coupled with a pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiator, a pure aluminum dome tweeter, a uniphase crossover network, and a non-resonant PolyStone cabinet with low diffraction construction) in order to achieve the most lifelike sound possible in your listening room. The ProMonitor 1000 loudspeaker may be used in a 2.0-channel system as a full-range driver, in a 2.1-channel system as a satellite speaker with a powered subwoofer, or as a satellite speaker in multichannel system.

Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The ProMonitor satellite provides clear, high-definition sound by pressure-coupling Definitive's exclusive BDSS technology driver to an equal-sized mid/bass radiator cleverly placed on the top of the satellite. This technique doubles the lower-midrange radiating area of the speaker without increasing the size of the enclosure. The result is a warm and life-like sound.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) drivers offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

  • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
  • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The ProMonitor features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
  • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
  • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The Lengthened voice coil also offers increased linearity and lower distortion.
  • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
  • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

Drivers: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 features a 5-1/4" BDSS driver coupled to a 5-1/4" pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiator, and a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter.

Break-In Period: The ProMonitor 1000 loudspeakers will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Non-Resonant PolyStone Cabinet: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 uses a non-resonant PolyStone cabinet with low diffraction construction. The speaker cabinet is available in a high-gloss black or white finish. The speaker's cabinet feature a removable cloth grille.

Binding Posts: The ProMonitor 1000 is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000 loudspeakers may be placed on a stand or shelf, or mounted on the wall or ceiling. The ProMonitor 1000 features a pedestal foot which allows it to fit securely and safe on a stand or shelf. The attached pedestal foot can be removed to mount the speaker to Definitive Technology's matching speaker stand (ProStand, sold separately) or to wall-mount the speaker. The ProMonitor 1000 can also be wall-mounted using the rear-panel keyhole slot. In addition, there is a 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the back of the speaker so you can use an optional articulating bracket (sold separately) to hang the speaker on a wall or ceiling.

Note: There is a insert plug included which covers the hole in the bottom of the speaker which you will see after you remove the pedestal foot when wall-mounting the speaker.

Placement: When used as front speakers, the ProMonitor 1000s should usually be placed 6 to 8 feet apart and kept away from the side walls and corners. When used as rear speakers, take care never to locate the speakers forward of the listeners. The ProMonitor 1000s may be angled in towards the listening position or left parallel with the rear wall according to your personal listening taste. Normally, angling the speakers in so that they point directly at the listeners will result in more detail and greater clarity.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Chose these as front speakers, on bookshelf, for 7.2 home theater system, replacing the smaller 800 model which as now side surrounds. Really came down to the wife - she was agreeable because of the glossy finish and shapely enclosures look nice on in the display cabinet. [ James  Jan 29, 2016 ]
I wanted a high definition audio speaker for my kitchen. The small white speakers will replace blown white Radio Shack speakers and will handle much more power yet be invisible. [ Jeffrey  Jan 04, 2016 ]

I only have them at the front L/R & have smaller speakers at rear, probably don't need this quality of speaker in rear. [ Brian  Feb 02, 2016 ]
i am very happy with the speakers. I have them as my front speakers with smaller speakers in the rear but î don't see any issues with what you are doing.great sound in a compact, attractive package. [ ROBERT A  Feb 01, 2016 ]
I added these in as my front-height speakers. They are positioned above my older Def Tech BP-7002's. As such they do not get pushed very often or very hard but when they do chime in they sound fine. For what I'm used to they'd probably be a little under-sized to accomplish what I'm after as a main front or rear; but that is purely subjective. I've never tried them as main front or rear. I've been very happy with my other DT products. Center, left-right mains and these as height in front. I used their support once (for my 7002's) and they came through for me (quickly and for free) with a fuse holder when the one I took out was broken. [ Kim  Feb 01, 2016 ]
This will be a great combination. They perform well for me. [ WAYNE  Feb 01, 2016 ]
Im not an expert but I believe so. The wonderful thing about Crutchfield is there wonderful customer service. You can always return. I'm just not sure if being in the side will give the expected sound quality. Mine are upright in glass shelves made for each. Good luck [ MARCIA  Feb 06, 2016 ]
I do not think you can place it on its side as it will roll around. If you could make up a rubber support of some kind it may work, but that would take a bit of time to do. [ Randy  Oct 06, 2015 ]
No. The sides are not flat. The sides are curved. [ James  Oct 01, 2015 ]
The speakers were designed for optimal efficiency to be stood up or mounted on a wall . The speakers are curved., so trying ly them on the side could be an issue, as they will not sit right. . They are not a square box , most likely will need a bookshelf speaker that is square to sit them the way you like. These are really good sounding reference speakers. Good luck. Hope this helped [ Taryn  Sep 28, 2015 ]
I can't see why not I don't think you will have any issues with sound quality and they should stay stable on their sides. [ eric  Sep 28, 2015 ]
You can, but notice that sides are angled, so unless you want the speaker tilted up, you will need to put some foam under the speaker to level it out. BTW, these are awesome sounding speakers. [ James  Sep 28, 2015 ]
Absolutely yes, I did it and it works fine Ron [ Ronald S.  Sep 28, 2015 ]
no don't think that works....they're not square so might not be stable. [ TROY  Sep 28, 2015 ]
Yes [ Peter  Sep 28, 2015 ]
The sides of the speakers are tapered to the back and have no feet on the sides. [ WAYNE  Sep 28, 2015 ]
They do not come with the mounting hardware. If you click on accessory's on the Crutchfield page it should list a compatible mount. [ TIM  Sep 03, 2015 ]
Yes, you can mount them on the wall. I purchased the mounts separately, however, the guy that installed the speakers, did not use them. [ DENISE  Sep 02, 2015 ]
I have mine mounted on the wall. My installer was able to sort through his options and find a fit. Im sorry I don't know the model number [ STEPHEN T  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yes you can mount these, but the bracket must be purchased separately. I purchased the mounts that Def Tech sells -- Pro-Mount 90 [ Derek  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yes we have them mounted on the wall. We purchased heavy duty mounting brackets from local retailer. [ PATRICIA  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Hello Joaquin. I used the ProMount 90 product to mount my PM1000's. I have a 5.1 surround system and hung all 4 of my PM1000's from the ceiling. I have black, so of course I ordered black mounts, but these mounts are also available in white to compliment your set-up. I purchased these directly from Def Tech and they run $50.00 for a pair. I don't think Crutchfield carries these mounts, but check with them first since they typically come in cheaper than other retailers. Keep this in mind on your mounts though, be sure you're mounting to a stud due to the weight of the speaker. Toggles will be questionable on sheet rock walls. Since I hung mine from the ceiling, I actually secured 2x4 studs in the attic to bolt the speakers on. Don't pay attention to the reviews on these mounts. I have had zero issues with them and they are nice and secure. I've had them installed now for about 3 years. I have them tilted down and firing toward the listening area. The only thing about hanging them from the ceiling, which makes no difference in sound quality, is that I had to hang them upside down due to the position of the bolt hole placed on the end of the speaker. I didn't have enough clearance form the ceiling to hang them right side up. However, if you're hanging them from the wall on each side of your TV, then you can hang them correctly. Try not to exceed about 6 feet on the wall if you can. These speakers are not omni directional, so they need to be firing more in line with the listener. Omni directional it doesn't matter where you sit. The sound envelopes the room and all positions are the sweet spot. I'm very pleased with the PM1000's. They can handle a heavy load. I run them off an Onkyo 727 with an SVS 10" sub and a PM 2000 center. I listen to movies at level 70. Never distorts or overheats. Good luck with your set-up! [ Ed  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yws, I have them mounted on the wall. The mounts must be purchased separayrly. [ Benjamin  Sep 01, 2015 ]
What you want to use is exactly what I have in my living room. All the speakers have the same size drivers so the transition will be seamless when the sound goes from center to side speakers and back again. Def Tech speakers are amazing for the price and will get as loud as you want them to. I feel that movies are their specialty not music but the difference is slight. I use a Martin Logan powered sub but I can't wire rear speakers now; old house, no attic. I will figure out a way in the future and will add Def Tech's for the rears. I am very happy with my Def Techs, you should be very happy with them. Don't be mislead by the small size, these speakers are amazing. I picked these over Bowers/Wilkins and couldn't be happier. [ PETER  Jan 23, 2014 ]
I have def 800's front and back with the sub in a room comparable to your dimensions, with an archway midroom leading to dining area/kitchen. I bought 2 additional 800's for 7 channel system mated to denon 1913 receiver, I couldn't be happier. if I had it to do again, I would have bought the pro cinema 800 system (pro center 1000), and 2 additional pro 1000 speakers, and used the 1000's up front. I can't say anything about onkyo, but you are on right track with speakers. I recommend you get the definitive speaker stands for the front channels. works so well (in my case stands for the 800's make sure you get stands for 1000's up front)) I am thinking of investing in another pair for the rear surrounds, and leaving the side channels (speakers #6 and 7) on bookcase shelves. I have no experience with onkyo recievers (I do have an onkyo cd player which is great) but I can tell you the definitive's sound great with the denon out of the box, and even better after a break in period. I previously owned Jbl speakers (crap). then acoustic research (pretty good, deep base) and then a bose 3-2-1 system which I have moved to my bedroom (ok,not great). the definitive surround suite is by far the best I have ever owned and I would buy it again. I may pop for a pair of 1000's with stands for the front, and move the 800 stands to the rear. IMO you can't go wrong, tho again I can't vouch for the onkyo. have you considered Denon? [ EDGAR A  Jan 08, 2014 ]
My system consists of the following: AV Amplifier: Sony STRDN 1040 7.2 1155 watt system Center Channel: (3) Definitive Technology Pro-Center 2000 Left & Right Front: (1 & 2) Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 55 (bookshelf) Center Surround: (4 & 5) Definitive Technology UIW64/A Round In-Ceiling Speakers Rear Surround: (6 & 7) Definitive Technology UIW64/A Round In-Ceiling Speakers Sub-woofer: (8) Polk Audio PSW125 (BK) 12" 150 Watt Powered Subwoofer My room is fairly large: 12 foot ceiling. It is open ended on one side. The room is 15 x 20. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx --- 1 3 2 X ^ X | X | X 4 5 X 20 feet There is no wall x separating the x | A/V area 6 7 x | from the rest of X | the house X | x | 8 x v xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ___ ?----------------- 15 feet --------------? I am very happy with the performance of the entire system. I never need to crank the volume up. There is very little, if any, distortion and the sound is crisp and clear for TV and movies. Sound is true for music as well. I know we do not have exactly the same equipment, but I am very happy with the definitive technology line of product and I suspect that you can compare the specs oof what I have versus what you are considering and be comfortable with making a decision. By the way crutchfield has also been a great supplier and source of information. sincerely, Ron [ RON  Jan 07, 2014 ]
Thanks to everyone for the responses to my question. I ordered a pair of 1000's and stands today and hope to have them on Wednesday. [ Frank  Jan 07, 2014 ]
I use the ProMonitor 800s as front speakers in a 5.1 setup in a 12'x21' room with an 8' ceiling. They sound terrific and fill the room perfectly. These speakers replaced a pair of Bose 501s and totally blow the Bose away both in clarity and mid bass. The 800s are driven buy a Denon AVR 3313CI and I plan on adding 4 more 800s, a ProCenter 1000, and 2 ProSub 800s for a 7.2 setup [ PAUL D  Jan 07, 2014 ]
The Pro Monitor 1000 is being used as a center channel at my son's house and the 2000 I have is a center channel in our bedroom. As for the 2000, it was a tremendous improvement over the older Bose Center Channel that formerly was used in the bedroom. Both center channels give a bright sound as center channels and make dialogue easy to hear and understand. Both are driven with a Denon AVR-1913 receiver. The end port assists in providing a rounded sound. Most of the experience we have with these is watching movies or television and not with music. The 2000 is in a room comparable to your 14x20 with 11' ceilings cascading up to ~16'. Still have great audio from the 2000. Son is happy with the 1000 as a center channel, but can't comment on using such as front surrounds. [ MARVIN  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I have a room that is 14 x 15 with 8 foot ceilings and i have the definitive tech 600 system. which fills the room well. I would expect that system to do well in your size room. [ DONALD R  Jan 06, 2014 ]
Frank I have the 1000's up front and the 2000 in the middle. I have not yet upgraded the rears but was planning on the 800's. My room is 14x14. I can only speak to my room size but am happy with what I have. I will be happier when I get the 800's in the rear location. It may be overkill but I am also considering putting towers in the front and moving the 1000's to the rear. Need to get that one past the spouse. [ MICHAEL  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I use the Promonitor 800s for my surrounds - they sound fantastic. My room size is comparable to yours. I have them mounted about 7.5 ft from the ground. They sound great and look great. I do not like bookshelf speakers for fronts - especially with my room size - so I Use the Def Tech BP6Bs - which rock! Hope this helps. Pete [ PETE  Jan 06, 2014 ]
Yes make sure they are ear height. The 1000's are great speakers I have them all the way around my 7.1 setup with a 2000 center, I don't see why the 800 wouldn't be a great product but if you have the cash I recommend the 1000's all around with a 2000 center very satisfied =) [ KELSEY  Jan 06, 2014 ]
