The sound will surprise you, but it shouldn't — the ProMonitor 800 uses many of the same technologies as Definitive's larger, more expensive speakers.

High-tech driver design for warm, rich sound

The 4-1/2" woofer gets a big performance boost from the mid/bass radiator mounted in the top of the cabinet (see more photos). This clever design doubles the lower-midrange radiating area without increasing the size of the enclosure, and helps provide rich, lifelike sound. A 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter produces extended highs that reveal nuance and subtle detail without a trace of edginess.

Options for stereo or home theater sound

Use a pair of these speakers with any Definitive Technology powered subwoofer for full-range stereo sound. This speaker is voice-matched with Definitive's complete ProCinema series, and can be paired with any ProCinema center channel speaker. To create a high-performance ProCinema 800 system, combine four ProMonitor 800 satellites with Definitive's ProCenter 1000 and ProSub 800.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Product Research

Overview: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 800 loudspeaker utilizes state-of-the-art components (BDSS driver coupled with a pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiator, a pure aluminum dome tweeter, a uniphase crossover network, and a non-resonant PolyStone cabinet with low diffraction construction) in order to achieve the most lifelike sound possible in your listening room. The ProMonitor 800 loudspeaker may be used in a 2.0-channel system as a full-range driver, in a 2.1-channel system as a satellite speaker with a powered subwoofer, or as a satellite speaker in a home theater system.

Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The ProMonitor satellite provides clear, high-definition sound by pressure-coupling Definitive's exclusive BDSS technology driver to an equal-sized mid/bass radiator cleverly placed on the top of the satellite. This technique doubles the lower-midrange radiating area of the speaker without increasing the size of the enclosure. The result is a warm and life-like sound.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

  • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
  • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The ProMonitor 800 features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
  • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
  • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The voice coil is also lengthened to increase linearity and lower distortion.
  • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
  • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

Drivers: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 800 features a 4-1/2" BDSS driver coupled to a 4-1/2" pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiator, and a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter.

Break-In Period: The ProMonitor 800 loudspeakers will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Non-Resonant PolyStone Cabinet: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 800 uses a non-resonant PolyStone cabinet with low diffraction construction. The speaker cabinet is available in a high-gloss black or white finish. The speaker's cabinet features a removable cloth grille.

Connections

Binding Posts: The ProMonitor 800 is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Definitive Technology ProMonitor 800 loudspeakers may be placed on a stand or shelf, or mounted on the wall or ceiling. The ProMonitor 800 features a pedestal foot which allows it to fit securely and safely on a stand or shelf. The attached pedestal foot can be removed to mount the speaker to Definitive Technology's matching speaker stand (ProStand, sold separately) or to wall-mount the speaker. The ProMonitor 800 can be wall-mounted using the rear-panel keyhole slot. In addition, there is a 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the back of the speaker so you can use Definitive Technology's optional mounting bracket (ProMount 80, sold separately), or other manufacture bracket (sold separately) to hang the speaker on a wall or ceiling.

Note: There is a insert plug included which covers the hole in the bottom of the speaker which you will see after you remove the pedestal foot when wall-mounting the speaker.

Placement: When used as front speakers, the ProMonitor 800s should usually be placed 6 to 8 feet apart and kept away from the side walls and corners. When used as rear speakers, take care never to locate the speakers forward of the listeners. The ProMonitor 800s may be angled in towards the listening position or left parallel with the rear wall according to your personal listening taste. Normally, angling the speakers in so that they point directly at the listeners will result in more detail and greater clarity.

Customer Q&A

Q
I own a pair of these 800â??s and am wishing to make them Bluetooth accessible for via iTunes on myiPhone. Am I dreaming, or is there any adapter I can buy to power them in the living room from the amp/ receiver in the bedroom? How? Is there a newer Pro Master 800 that is active, or is there a compatible Bluetooth adapter? thanks! Steven

Steven - You will need the amplifier to have a speaker selection switch to go from powering the bedroom speakers to powering these speakers in the living room - but I assume running wires across the floor is not going to happen. Your amplifier (a receiver or integrated amp) would need an extra input for a Bluetooth adapter that can pickup the signal from your iphone. I own the AudioEngine B1 which is very nice but there are less expensive options like the Harmon Kardon BTA 10. You select the input for the Bluetooth adapter on the amplifier and then pair to your iphone.

No. It has standard binding posts. It does sound very good as the primary speaker in a second room.

I'm in a very small apartment and just want to upgrade my tv sound. I will be using an old top of the line Yamaha receiver to power the speakers. I doubt I would team them up with a subwoofer because of neighbors being in such close vicinity. Do you think these speakers will be adequate for my use?

I can understand your concerns, but...The PM 800 doesn't really have much bass at all. If it was me I would drop down. I can't remember what the names are ATM, but here is what I would do.Get the smallest PM speakers with a small Sub. There should be setting in your RV so the bass doesn't travel through the walls. Doing this in a small setting will open up the sound and when you know no one is open go ahead and crank it up. Remember to play Pink noise through the faced together and one out of Phase. In the end, even sub bass set to really low is better the just using these speakers to really on any bass at all. I hope this helps you.

Yes, those speakers are a good size and have great sound.

If you hoping for 5 channel surround sound, No. The speakers won't do it. But for high quality stereo sound I'm pretty happy. I think they are a good value. I use them for CD music on a medium priced stereo system. I use a sound bar on my television (on a different floor) and I happy with that too.

I use them in a 1500 s.f. fitness studio, so yes, they are definitely more than adequate!

I have a small den - 10x20 ft - and really like how the Pro Monitor 800's perform. They do a nice job as an upgrade for TV sound. I also use them for stereo listening and am very pleased. Due to their size, they are a little light on the bass response but a small boost on the amplifier bass remedies that. The speakers should be more than adequate for your use. Hope this helps.

Q
are these speakers good for a large room?
dan  Jan 09, 2014

A
Yes and may be. If youhave a A/V amplifier that runs dedicated 2ch stereo on each speaker, yes it will do with plenty of power. The maybe is related to how big is big and ultimately the function you are pursuing. I installed mine 5.1 on my basement which is about 900 sq.ft for my man cave (home theather+bar+pool table). I put about half+ volume and my wife could hear with clarity what was going on on our second floor. In a world of pesky neighbors and noise cancelation headphones, this speakers deliver a lot and you may well get complains from your next door friend if cranked to their full potential. I did research for quite a while and those are the only consistenly recommended by several A/V publications. My only recomendation is to buy the wall mounts. I use a shelf for the front ones and the speaker tends to bounce at high volume when harmonics makes the shelf and the speaker couple with their vibration. Still working to solve the problem.

Depending on the size of the large room. These are good quality, good sounding speakers but if you expect them to fill the room then will you may be disappointed. Either add a subwoofer to take some of the load off the smaller speakers or go with one of the larger bookshelf speakers in the DefTech line. Hope this helps guide you.

I returned those 800s without hooking them up to get 1000s because I was going to be buying stands anyway. I have no doubt 800s would have sufficed for my room as the 1000s are really filling my midsize room well.

Bought these for my son. He has them in his living room and is blown away by their quality of sound. His room is approx. 20 x 24 with 10 ft. ceilings. His wife was impressed and she was in the kitchen.

I have 4 of these in a surround set up. Living room is large and open floor plan with dinning room. The sound is much bigger than expected. I did up the sub to the 10" prosub and glad I did . Overall very pleased with the sound quality. Can turn up very loud without distortion.

Dan, It depends on what else (if anything) you plan to use with it. For use in a large room you would probably want to at least pair them with a subwoofer. By themselves they may be a little small for a large room and lack bass unless you plan to use them for background music. I currently use them as rear surround speakers combined with BP8 towers, SuperCube8000 and a ProCinema1000 center channel in a fairly large basement and have been very pleased with the result. Overall, Definitive speakers are outstanding and in my opinion some of the best on the market. I hope this has been helpful to you.
