Our take on the Definitive Technology SuperCube® 6000

The SuperCube 6000 sub uses a new class of high-efficiency amplifier to bring 1,500 watts to bear. Its clean muscle is preceded by a 56-bit DSP pre-amp stage that kills distortion before it ever reaches the amp, let alone your ears. The SuperCube's 9" woofer is pressure-coupled to two 10" passive radiators. This driver array gives the 6000 the capability for far greater speed, musicality, and control than the typical large single-woofer sub. The ultra-stiff woofer is encased in an incredibly rigid basket engineered to hold the massive magnet structure and large voice coil in absolute alignment. The non-resonant front and back panels are nearly 2" thick and use multiple internal bracings to make sure that you hear clean bass without sound-muddying cabinet vibrations.

Concentrated bass — be amazed by this compact cube

Definitive's Technology's SuperCube 6000 subwoofer proves that powerful bass doesn't require a big box. The tried-and-true SuperCube formula features an active woofer and two similar-sized passive radiators, all driven by a brawny 1,500-watt amplifier. This sub will fill your room with sound while taking up just over a cubic foot of space.

Flexible inputs and advanced controls

Line-level and speaker-level inputs let you connect this sub to just about any audio system. The continuously variable low-pass crossover allows you to precisely control the frequencies that your subwoofer handles. And the disappearing display lets you monitor the 6000's settings while you adjust them with the included wireless remote.

DT SuperCube 6000

Andrew from ft wayne, IN on 3/27/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had Definitive Technologies BP20s w/ a center channel and small rear surround BP2s for maybe 20 years now and they've been excellent. We finally have a receiver that has a sub out (Denon) so when it came time for a sub my only consideration was DT. Officially, with my research, the 4000 would have been a 'perfect fit' for our room but through a lot of reading and thinking about a possibly larger room someday I opted for the 6000. In short, it lives up to all of the positive reviews. I've got nothing bad to say about this box. My business is designing and installing commercial AV systems and doing live production .so I am knowledgeable about subwoofers and crossovers and HPFs and LPFs...

Pros: Small in stature, shakes the whole house (and it's on a slab). Great upgrade to our already great DT speaker system. When Bilbo dropped the Ring on the floor yesterday, it was quite impressive and that's a subtle scene.

Cons: Really, nothing. Works as billed and well engineered. I do understand that there may be users asking for more than this box is designed to deliver but it's really great for the movies we've put through it.

Amazing Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to upgrade our home theatre subs to two Supercube 6000s and replace our two Supercube IIIs. I've been somewhat disappointed with the SC IIIs. I've replaced 3 boards but have to say, Definitive was very nice and responsive and never charged me for the boards even at the end of their warranty. It's a major reason I stuck with Def Tech for new subs. I have three Mythos Ten speakers surrounding a 70" TV along with rear ceiling mounted Def Tech UIW RCS II speakers for a 5.2 system. My receiver is a Denon AVR-3312CI. We primarily watch movies in the home theatre but there are times I get to crank it up (like when no one is home!) with some music. Our home theatre is 20' x 15' and open on one 20' side. The two units have absolutely no problem filling this space. In fact there is plenty of bass with one sub operating. Wow, what a difference. I'm not sure how the 6000s do it but they actually make the entire system from the musical lows to highs sound better! I've had them working for 24 hours and they sound great. Even my Wife stated how great they looked and sounded last night. Expensive yes, but so far I feel worth the price. I thought the remote control would be gimmicky. However I now feel this should be standard on all subs and love this feature. For those buying two, you can use one remote control for both. The broadcast range is narrow enough that I can control each individually by pointing right at the subwoofer.

Pros: Attractive Remote control Great sound Compact size Crutchfield/UPS free delivery in three days to California

Cons: None

My previous sub was taken out by lightening during a bad storm and had heard many good things about the DT subs so I decided to try this one. I was not disappointed. I love the remote, it makes it nice to sit in my listening position and hear the settings in real time. It really sounds good with my collection of SACD's.

Pros: Remote, solid bottom end.

Cons: None

Nice little unit, but not quite what I expected

pohlevj from New York on 8/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to like this sub! Now don't get me wrong, this is a nice little subwoofer. Its really nice looking, has a remote to make adjustments on the spot which is great, and it can certainly get loud. But I just expected more. I noticed after setting it up that it seemed like some of the mid-bass was weak. I also suspected that the claimed 14 hz frequency response was a little off as well. So I put on an audio clip of a 200-10 hz sweep. I noticed that there is a point in the middle of the sweep where the bass just drops right off. I also noticed that while it did play decently low, in no way did it play down to 14 hz. I have since tried moving it to other spots of the living room, running Audyssey setup about twenty times, messing with the crossover settings of both amp and sub, but its just not doing it for me. For spending a grand on a subwoofer I thought it would have given me more. I think this one is meant to look pretty and have a high WAF (wife acceptance factor) along with the neat feature of the remote, but the sound itself produced by this sub is just not what I was hoping for. Kind of disappointing as I really like Deftech speakers. I was considering returning this and getting the supercube 8000 instead, but its an extra 500 bucks. I KNOW I can find something better for the same price if not cheaper. I also know that when it comes to high end audio gear you can't expect TOO much for a grand, but I would think it should be more than this.

Pros: Great looking product; neat little remote to fine tune the sub on demand; high WAF; it CAN sound good when it wants to if put in the right place and tuned the right way

Cons: WAY too expensive for what you get; does not play down as low as it claims, I noticed missing mid-bass when doing a 200-10 hz sweep;

Cons: a little pricy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Owning a SuperCube II, I wanted to upgrade to 2 units for my 2 channel stereo with bookshelf speakers on stands. The DefTech Super Cube was and still is the only model, at any price, that I will ever consider owning. I liked the 6000 so much (thanks to the included IR remote) I bought another; now I have 2 SC6000's and have moved my original SuperCube II into the home theater. Compact, powerful, remote with EQ, LF crossover, volume, and phase all adjustable from my listening chair. DefTech SuperCube remain the best you can buy.

Pros: Everything.

Cons: Nothing.

sc6000 versus prosub 800 versus Bose acoustimass 10

HappyRC from us on 3/28/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sc6000 is 100 times better than the prosub 800 that I heard at a local retailer. Yes, it's unfair that I listened to a prosub 800 8inch but that's all there was at this retailer for me to try. Whereas the prosub 800 rattled, the sc6000 can shake my 17x15 feet family room with 10 foot ceiling that opens into the 17x10 foot kitchen, without loose rattles. What's impressive is that the bass is not just loud and low for explosions but it also has medium and high bass for doors closing and it can go to completely silent. The sc6000's bass range is phenomenal compared to my old Onkyo 8 inch 150 watts subwoofer. The bass is tight which makes the dialogue on the center speaker clear. Highly recommended ------------- As for BOSE, the tweeters are not clear and too bright. The loose subwoofer sounds like a cheap $100 box that doesn't sound very low because they're tiny dual 5.25 inch speakers.

Pros: Impressive bass range from low explosions to medium door thumps to high male voices

Cons: As great as the sc6000 is for a subwoofer, it doesn't come close to the super tight and clean bass from my real set of drums (with a pillow inside).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I moved to my new house at the beach I replaced all my audio/visual equipment except (1) my Definitive rear speakers and (2) My huge 15" Velodyne sub from the 1980s. These have served me well for three more years but finally the old Velodyne died. I put a limit on my replacement cost and in time found myself looking at the Definitive SuperCube 6000. I hoped - but was not confident - that this midget sub could replace my giant Velodyne without too much loss in quality bass sound. Wow. It did replace the Velodyne and instead of a loss I gained in quality bass sound. I don't know how they did it, but this is an awesome device. Not only does it put out excellent bass sound - much cleaner and crisper than the big Velodyne and also strong enough to rumble the floor and wake up my dog - but it sits there beautifully and unobtrusively in the corner. An excellent purchase - do not hesitate, just buy it. And again I don't know how Crutchfield does it - I ordered it and received it the next day - and I am located out at the beach. Simply amazing.

Pros: Sweet looking; big clear, crisp bass.

Cons: None.

One "BAD TO THE BONE SUB". I have a 25x25 great room and I am 100% satisfied. It is everything you need in a sub and I enjoy all the adjustments that can be made with the remote or manually. p.s. it replaced my 10 inch $3000.00 Velodyne and to me it is a way better sub.

I have a Denon DRA-697CI stereo Receiver with 2 AR-11 speakers. Since the AR-11's have 10 inch speakers and the super cube has 10 inch speakers, I was concerned whether the cube would be able to make much difference. I was amazed - it will add a whole new dimension to your sound. Sound so low you can almost feel it before you hear it. Since this product is so small I was able to position it perfectly in front of my television centered between the 2 AR-11 speakers. The remote control allows you to set the cross over frequency while sitting at your seat. This setting allows the cube to blend seamlessly into your existing speaker sound. I found 50hz worked best with the AR-11's. There are other settings as well that help optimize the sound quality. There are multiple ways to connect the cube. I used the "Line In" method since the DRA-697CI has a "Line Out" for a sub.

Pros: Size, Remote Control, Sound

Cons: none

Amazing Sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crazy loud, clean, deep, beautiful subwoofer. I have never heard anything this good in home theater systems before. For the price it is ridiculously wonderful. It loves music, I've tested it with Bass Mekanik and it hits everything nicely, feels like I have a butt kicker installed on my sofa. I have had it for a few weeks and it is opening up so much as it gets broke in, I only have the volume of the sub set at 25 out of 40, it seriously loud, and fills my 1800 sqft. house with bass. It is also great looking, only just over a cubic foot, piano black, and you can shut off the display, even put it in night mode to calm it down. My friends can't believe it, the one guy has a 15 inch Velodyne and two Polk Audio 10s and my one Def Tech is louder and hits harder, and is so much cleaner since it is a sealed enclosure. The radiators make a huge difference. Love it and recommend to all in the price range. My Denon even turn the sub level down to -12db when doing my set up with the mic. The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray was making the sub so much louder that I turned the sub down to 20. If you live close to neighbors they will hear you. Good Luck.

Pros: Crazy loud, low, and room filling

Cons: At times can be too loud, over powering the movies, but adjusting the volume is a easy fix. Neighbors within 50ft may hear it.

Definitive Technology SuperCube Powered Sub: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 is a compact, high-quality powered subwoofer intended for use in a music or home theater system. The SuperCube 6000 powered subwoofer allows for easy, seamless integration into almost any two-channel or multichannel speaker system; delivering true, accurate, & extremely deep bass in any room. The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 features a 1500-watt digital amplifier, 56-bit DSP, 9" woofer with dual 10" passive radiators, & an included wireless remote control. The SuperCube 6000 is finished in a piano-gloss black lacquer finish with a black non-removable cloth grille.

1500W Digital Tracking Amplifier: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 features a 1500-watt (RMS) digital tracking amplifier that is optimized for real world power demands to deliver low distortion & high output. As well as producing high continuous power to cleanly reproduce sustained bass (down to 14 Hz), this all-new Definitive Technology digital amp has a high crest factor to deliver considerably higher power during short, transient peaks such as bass drum kicks & on-screen artillery blasts. You'll enjoy high volume, high impact, & low distortion bass from your favorite action/adventure films & TV shows without sacrificing the smooth response & quick precision needed for music.

Note: As well as being powerful, the new Definitive Technology digital amp is environment-friendly. The amplifier goes into idle mode after less than 30 minutes of no audio signal. When in idle mode the amp draws a mere 1/2 Watt or less of current, meeting international standards for low energy consumption.

56-Bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP): The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 has an integrated 56-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that extends & improves the bass response. Multiband digital protection systems tightly monitor & control the woofer system to prevent distortion & woofer damage at ultra-high volume levels with a minimum of audible artifacts. In contrast to simpler one-band compression/limiting circuits used in competing subwoofer amp designs, the Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 features a Multiband Dynamic Range Optimizer (M-DRO) that divides the frequency range into multiple bands. If the DSP detects an overdrive condition in the upper bass range, it applies just the right amount of compression & to prevent distortion to just that range without compressing the low bass, thereby vastly reducing the audible compression artifacts. As a result, the SuperCube 6000's bass is always tight, highly detailed, & distortion free.

High Definition Drivers: The powerful, high-definition drivers used in the new SuperCubes were specifically engineered for their task: to deliver rock-solid low distortion bass, reaching down to the lowest frequencies (14-200Hz), with an outstanding quality of superior transient response ("tightness"). The special ultra-stiff cones are joined to specially formulated surrounds & long-throw voice coils & spiders. The incredibly rigid cast aluminum baskets are engineered to hold the massive magnet structures & large voice coils in absolute alignment. The high temperature voice coils are made of aluminum wound with triple insulated ultra-pure copper wire & baked in epoxy for superior power handling & reliability.

Passive Radiator Design: The SuperCube 6000 features an 9" subwoofer driver pressure coupled to two 10" Ultra Low Bass Radiators. The total piston area is greater than a 14" diameter woofer but with far greater speed, musicality, & control than a single large diameter woofer could ever deliver.

Non-Resonant Cabinet: The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Resonance & vibration can add unwanted distortion as well as drain away important acoustical energy from the system. Definitive's subwoofer enclosures have been specifically engineered to be totally inert & vibration free, to ensure you of absolutely pure sonic reproduction. The front and rear panels are nearly 2" thick & the cabinet incorporates multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity. The SuperCube 6000 is finished in piano-gloss black lacquer finish.

Ultra-Compact Design: The SuperCube 6000 measures only 12" (w) x 12.8125" (h) x 13.25" (d). Measurements include rubber-feet & cables.

Interchangeable Feet: The SuperCube 6000 comes with 4 rubber-feet & 4 spiked-feet for safe & secure placement of the powered subwoofer on your carpet or hardwood floors. The spiked feet add approximately 0.125" of height to the powered subwoofer.

Placement: There are some general guidelines that you should use when locating the powered subwoofer.

  • For best results, place the subwoofer on the same side of the room as your front speakers.
  • For maximum output, the subwoofer should be placed in a corner or against the wall, leaving approximately 2" to 4" clearance between the powered subwoofer and the wall(s).
  • Corner placement will increase the powered subwoofer's output.
  • An acoustic effect called "standing waves" or "room modes" may cause uneven bass at various locations throughout the room. This phenomenon is a function of the dimensions of the room and not due to the design of the powered subwoofer.

Protection Circuit: To prevent accidental damage to the subwoofer from overdriving the system, the SuperCube 6000 features an internal overload protection circuit, which will turn the subwoofer off or down when overdriven or overheated & will then resume normal operation after a few minutes.

Subwoofer Controls: A complete array of controls allow the SuperCube 6000 to be perfectly integrated with any stereo or multi-channel audio system, and tuned for optimum performance in any room.

Front-Panel LCD: A front-panel LCD alphanumeric character display (red) indicates control settings automatically & turns off when not in use. The front-panel LCD indicates Volume level, Crossover frequency, Phase, EQ mode, & Night mode.

Remote Control: In addition to the SuperCube 6000's rear-panel controls, the powered subwoofer comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation. The remote includes Power, Volume, Crossover, Phase, EQ, Night Mode, Mute, & Display controls.

Note: The remote operates off of a single 3V lithium battery (CR2025).

Volume Control: The SuperCube 6000 features a rear-mounted push-button volume control (0-40). This control is used to raise or lower the output level of the subwoofer in relation to the other speaker in your system.

Note: There is also a mute button on the remote control to zero the volume level quickly.

Variable Low-Pass Crossover: The Definitive Technology powered subwoofer features a continuous variable low-pass filter control on the back-panel. This filter is continuously variable between 40 and 150 Hz. It "rolls-off" (24dB/oct) the high-frequency response of your subwoofer so only low-frequencies below the desired setting will be heard. This low-pass filter control is used to obtain the optimum transition between the subwoofer and your main speakers.

Variable Phase Alignment: The powered subwoofer features a rear-panel push-button phase control (0/90/180/270-degrees). This control is used to perfectly blend the output of your subwoofer with your main speakers to compensate for any possible problems due to placement constraints.

EQ: You can toggle between 4 specific preset equalization settings to suit your music/movie soundtrack or preference.

  • EQ1: Maximizes deepest octave bass response at the sacrifice of maximum volume level (good choice for pipe organ & symphonic recordings). This setting should not be used a high volume levels.
  • EQ2: Raises relative level of mid-bass frequencies (good choice for hip-hop & rock music, or movie soundtracks with weak bass).
  • EQ3: Raises the level of mid- & ultra-low bass frequencies (a great setting for movies when not played at ultra-high volume levels).
  • EQ4: The best setting to use when achieving maximum volume levels with minimal distortion is more important than reproducing the lowest frequencies.

Night Mode: Night Mode applies dynamic range compression to the woofer so that the loudest bass in a movie doesn't get loud enough to wake the parents, kids, or spouse at night.

Auto Turn-On Circuit: The powered subwoofer has a special power circuit which automatically turns the powered subwoofer on when a signal is fed to the loudspeaker and turns it off when there is no signal present, so it does not require an on-off switch.

LED Indicator: The red LED on the back panel of the powered subwoofer will light up when a signal is sensed and the amplifier turns on. It will automatically turn off with the powered subwoofer, a little while after the signal is discontinued.

Line-Level & Speaker Level Connections: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 powered subwoofer has a complete range of inputs & outputs to allow easy and effective hookup to any system. Both (high) speaker level & low-level inputs are provided in case you do not have a subwoofer output. In addition, the SuperCube 6000 has a separate direct-in LFE low-level input (which bypasses the crossover network).

LFE Input: The LFE input on the SuperCube 6000 is a mono-RCA input which is not affected by the subwoofer's low-pass filter or low-pass crossover control. It is designed to connect the SuperCube 6000 to a receiver which features a dedicated subwoofer output which features its own low-pass crossover filter.

Low-Level Inputs: If your receiver does not feature a dedicated subwoofer output, but does feature stereo RCA outputs, you can use the SuperCube 6000's stereo RCA low-level inputs (which provide its own dedicated variable low-pass crossover circuit) to connect the subwoofer to your receiver,

Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level inputs (5-way binding posts) are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized.

Remote Connections: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 6000 features 12V trigger & IR remote inputs.

  • 12V Trigger Input: 3.5mm jack which connects to the 12V trigger output of an AV receiver for one-button system turn-on.
  • IR Input: 3.5mm jack used to connect an optional IR remote repeater (sold separately), when the powered subwoofer is hidden & cannot be operated from the included IR remote control.

Detachable AC Power Cord: The SuperCube 6000 includes a detachable 7' AC power cord. The SuperCube 6000 must be plugged into a 120V, 60Hz electrical socket (use an unswitched outlet if possible).

1 question already asked

I'm extremely pleased with this unit. I'm using a Sony STR-DN1040 AV receiver driving 2 Klipsch Forte IV towers, a Klipsch KG-2.2V center speaker and Boston Acoustic book shelf speakers. All of the speakers are roughly 25 years old and still kicking. I listen to mostly music while the wife and daughter use it more for movies. I use about 40% of the available volume on the SuperCube when I'm rocking out. Maybe 30% for general listening. I have the unit in the front corner of my room. The first time I had the volume at 50% I had dishes in the cupboards moving around. The kitchen and my family room are connected in an open room design wit 12 foot ceilings. I couldn't be happier with my choice of the SuperCube 6000. For a small foot print it sure delivers. Hope this is helpful... [ MICHAEL J  Jan 07, 2015 ]
The Super Cube 6000 I feel will give you everything that you are looking for and a whole lot more. When I listen to music I tend to keep it turned down around the lower 20's and when watching a movie or football game it gets turned up around 30. It is VERY powerfull, versatile and adjustable! "at 30 it is rocking a 25x25 great room just like being at the movies". Do not know if my earlier coment is in there but I had a $3K Velodyne Sub and there is no comparison! I mentioned adjustable earlier which is why I really enjoy the REMOTE, would not get one without it and to me better to have more POWER and not need it than to have less and wish I did. I am VERY satisfied with it and my choice of music is also jazz and contemporary rock. [ NICHOLAS A  Jan 03, 2015 ]
I was very unsatisfied with bass this sub delivered. I want to hear good thunder in a movie and by itself this mini cube was not up to the task. I ended up purchasing a dual sub receiver and am useing 2 mini cubes and that solved the problem. If your Sony is pushing good base already keep it and save your money unless you wish to update your system like I did with mine. [ GARY  Jan 03, 2015 ]
If you are looking for a clean, sharp bass, not too heavy at low mid volumes you should be very pleased at this price ,jump on it,you should have no regrets [ JAY  Jan 02, 2015 ]
Yes I love this sub! It has amazing deep bass. I use it for my home theater setup. [ Douglas  Jan 02, 2015 ]
You will not be disappointed with this sub woofer it is an excellent choice. It sounds good at all levels and is priced right for the quality you receive. [ DAVID  Jan 02, 2015 ]
This sub is really amazing. It provides plenty of tight low base from a tiny package. I replaced an old DT Powerfield 18 with this and was a little hesitant about going from an 18" driver to a 9" driver, but I also really wanted something that didn't take up an entire corner of the living room. It was well worth the money and I have been totally satisfied. [ MATTHEW L  Jan 02, 2015 ]
